Choosing a nursery furniture set for your baby

The benefits of getting a nursery furniture set
There are many benefits to buying your nursery furniture in a set. First of all, buying items together often equals better value for money. Manufacturers and retailers will often offer a more competitive price for items bought together rather than individually – so, if you need all of the items anyway, it is a more financially savvy way to do baby-business.
Buying matching items can also be aesthetically beneficial, bringing a room together and creating the ‘finished look’.
Another major reason for buying your items as a set is the amount of time it will save! Researching and buying baby items is a time-consuming task — so if there is an opportunity to safely cut a few corners here and there, we say go for it! Anything to make life a little easier during pregnancy…
What nursery furniture do I need?
Nursery furniture can come in sets of varying sizes, including two, three and four-piece collections, or in some cases more. Additional items might include a glider chair, toy box or mattress.
The main baby nursery items needed are typically:
- Cot or cot bed
- Chest of drawers/changer
- Wardrobe
Additional items might include:
- Ottoman chest/ toy chest
- Rocking chair or glider chair
- Under-cot drawer
- Footstool
- Mattress
- Changing cot top
- Changing mat
- Nursery shelf
How much should I spend on my nursery furniture set?
Whilst buying baby furniture in a set can offer value for money, the cost between sets can vary dramatically, depending upon the number of pieces in a set and other factors such as the materials used (is it solid wood or veneer?), the brand, and any additional features. Sets of nursery furniture typically range from around £300 (for a two-piece set) to upwards of £1,000. The best thing to do when buying a set of nursery furniture is to set yourself a realistic/affordable budget and try to stick to it – or as close to as possible.
If you are looking for a cheap baby furniture set (or as we prefer to say, inexpensive or a bargain), there are plenty of great deals to be found — so always shop around, and keep your eyes open for a sale where you can take advantage of sizeable reductions.
When should I buy my baby nursery furniture set?
You can begin to get an idea of the type of furniture you would like and your nursery decor as soon as you like, although many parents like to wait until the second or even third trimester to make the final purchase and set it all up. The first few months of pregnancy is a great time to do all of your research, measure up (to avoid costly mistakes) and find the best price.
Should I buy a nursery furniture set online?
Like with many items, there are obvious pros and cons to buying goods online – but there are likely to be some great deals to be found as online traders compete for your business. When buying baby furniture there are a few things you can do to ensure the best experience:
- Measure your nursery space to ensure items will fit. Ensure there will be enough room to move around and open doors and cupboards with space to spare.
- If possible, visit a store that stocks the furniture you like — to ensure you are happy with the quality
- Read reviews — If you can't physically have a look at the furniture, get tucked into some reviews. There is a lot of information to be gleaned from reading about other parents’ experiences and any pitfalls to avoid!
- Shop around — always compare prices and have a look online to find the best deals
- Check the returns info — Some furniture stores may allow you to return items within a specified time and in the original packaging. However, you may be charged return postage and/or a restocking fee.
- Made to order furniture is not likely to be refundable unless it is faulty.
Do I need a baby changing unit?
A baby changing unit can be a really handy addition to a furniture set, allowing you to change your baby at a comfortable height and with plenty of handy storage underneath. Many chest-changers will also cleverly convert into a regular chest-of-drawers when the changing top is no longer needed, offering great value for money. If space is limited, you may instead opt for a cot-top changer; a changing platform which slots onto the cot bed rails and can be removed easily when needed. Don’t worry if you don’t have room though, as a changing mat on the floor is also a great option!
What type of storage should I look to get?
When it comes to storage, we’re not sure you can ever have enough when it comes to babies and all their clobber! That said, you also want to ensure that the room does not feel cluttered, with too much furniture packed in and little space to move around or play. As well as a wardrobe, and changing chest, some furniture sets also offer under-cot storage which tucks away neatly in an otherwise unutilised space.
Other storage options to consider include an ottoman or toy box as well as storage baskets which can sit inside a wardrobe or even on top of it to help keep your nursery organised and clutter-free. Wall space can also be utilised with shelving for storage as well as displaying decorative items and keepsakes.
Finally, over-cot organisers, which are hung safely on the outside of the cot bed are great storage solutions. These are usually made from fabric and have various pouches and pockets which are perfect for small items such as wipes, nappies and changing products or even toys and books. Similar caddies can also be attached to changing tables, bedroom doors or nursery walls.
Should I buy a cot bed?
A cot bed can save money as it will last your baby longer than a standard cot. When your little one is ready (around two-years old) a cot bed will convert into a toddler bed which will serve them until around the age of four, or even longer in some cases! Some models offer a third configuration, morphing into a bedroom sofa or daybed. Very clever.
