As a society, people determined that hearts were not necessary, causing too many emotions and people to lose focus. A solution was created to regulate and alleviate the physical and emotional pain of the human experience. But artistic June is the only one who has kept her heart, and she's so alone. I really appreciate graphic novels that play around with colors to tell a story and Wilson does just that. Those without a heart art colorless, but June is not.
I gave it four stars because I feel like June made a very rash decision over a boy too quickly! But other than that, it was a good read.

I just got the warm fuzzies knowing that this book is so inclusive and open about gender, identity, protecting nature, and in general being a decent being. The story is very cozy, so the arc isn't super exciting, but sometimes that is a nice thing. The illustrations are very cute and imaginative and really perfect for the story! This is a great book for middle grades and young adults alike.

Zeus is determined to make an example of Persephone after the massacre that occurred in the mortal realm. Hades, on the other hand, has taken Persephone under his wing and will not give her up to his brother. Needless to say, that the relationship between Persephone and Hades heats up while more and more people are questioning Zeus' stand.
Another great Volume to a wonderful series. The illustrations really bring to life the feelings throughout the story making them feel more vivid while reading it. I just love how Smythe has brought these characters to life, and into the 21st century, with sly humor and wit! I personally felt this in the virtual meeting scene! Grab this one and devour it just like the rest!

It is a pretty quick read and the text that Fred Fordham included comes straight from the novel. His illustrations are realistic and very well done. He gets the tone perfectly. I understand why people are assigned this to read in school. There are so many heavy themes to discuss. This book did its job for me. I am not interested in reading the novel, even though I am a librarian. *gasp*

Gah! It finally happened! Persephone and Hades admit their feelings towards one another. This is really all I could asked for but the twists and turns of this volume made me pretty sad that the next one isn't out for a couple more months. I need to know what will happen next.

They are both confronting their growing, and obvious, emotions in very real world ways. While constantly rooting for the couple I am totally invested in the personal growth that each are pursuing. I am quite enjoying the evolution of Hades' emotions and thoughts toward Persephone in particular. Can Persephone please get some better friends though? I mean really, everyone is doing something to slow her down it seems. A great addition to the series.

A photo has surfaced of Persephone and Hades leaving the party from volume one, fueling rumors that they are more than friends. As a result more characters enter the mix in volume two, all of which try their best to interfere with Persephone and Hades getting closer. I was still getting used to the world in this volume while also making sure I had all of the characters straight. This gives you a good understanding of the relationship that is blossoming while also providing the back story as to why others don't want them to get together. Again, the illustrations are stunning and add to the vibe of the entire story.

I love the direction this book took and am now completely rooting for Hades and Persephone to profess their love for one another. The tension that builds during this book is good and only adds to the anticipation of the two characters every time they interact. Who else would like an Eros in their life? Me too! The friendship that grows between Eros and Persephone is vitally important and the discussion about consent is invaluable to anyone reading. When I finished this volume, I immediately wanted to get volume four. So good.

I struggle with some graphic novels because I feel like I'm missing something, the story moves too quickly, or there's just too much happening for the storytelling medium. I appreciate that the focus of this book was rather narrow - Jade struggling with her art because she's struggling with her friend's attempted suicide. I like how throughout the book art is used as a way to deal with emotions and the characters even discuss using art to deal with mental health. A solid read, but not if you're looking for something uplifting.

It appears that there are not human inhabitants left on the planet, which has seen it's own destruction from meteors. As the girl explores she discovers images from the past that juxtapose pretty clearly with what she sees in the present. You are guessing up to the last page as to whether there are actually any humans remaining and whether our space explorer with find a human connection for herself. The illustrators are masters at storytelling without words and paint a compelling future for the human race. Really delightful!

I wouldn't say that I am very knowledgeable about Greek mythology, so this book was a great guide for me. I was able to visually track each god while begin to understand their roles. The illustrations are gorgeous and really being the book to life. I plan to continue with the rest of the series as it is so captivating.

It definitely was not a happy read, but I think it's an important portrayal of some of the issues that young girls deal with frequently. However, I did not appreciate the end and how it glossed over the fact that recovering from an eating disorder takes time. Also, I really did not like the mom!

Growing up, Maia always struggled with eir gender identity, feeling eir gender couldn't be defined within "normal" standards. This is eir story of discovery, through some difficult and defining experiences. I love that this book exists. It is soo important that Maia's experience and challenges are out there for others to discover. There are so many individuals who could relate to Maia's experiences. Reading about them in a book can help another person feel more comfortable in their skin, feeling more loved and accepted in our challenging world.

It's a graphic memoir about Kindra's experience during a school shooting and the years after dealing with the trauma. It does touch on attempted suicide and the PTSD of experiencing a horrific event. But also, it shows Kindra's journey of cooping through art, finding new friends, and telling her story. This was a selection for a teen book club, and the participants brought up the great fact that the colors used in the art really reflect the emotions of that scene. Keep an eye out for that! A great quick--but impactful--read.
