I love learning how a book is made from the very beginning (in which the author/artist starts with an idea) to the very end (when the book reaches the hands of a child). I knew some of the process, but this simple book does an excellent job at explaining all of the stops and people who help along the way.
If you're a book lover, this is a fun and appealing book to have in your library. I found this one at my local thrift shop for only a dollar, so it was truly worth my money. Great for reading and exploring with a child, as well. ...more

I liked the first book in this series, but not much more. This one had more going for it in one way - the lovely descriptions of the bookstore, tasty meals and warm kitchen and bedroom details BUT it was absolutely balanced out (in a negative way) by the rest of the book.
It'd be great if I could give part of the book 4...more

Mix a book-peddling "Professor", a much over-worked sister, and a rickety book cart to brighten your day. It's taken me a long time to finally read this book (which has been on my shelf for at least 2 years), but I'm so glad I did.
The description of Parnassus with steady and reliable Peg(asus) the Horse and Bock the dog as guardian are lovely. I could imagine every tiny part of the charming bookshop on wheels in my mind and I would jump at the chance for a weekend trip sleeping between the racks of books.
Roger Mifflin's Traveling Parnassus poem is almost my favorite part of the whole book...besides the cozy descriptions of the inside of the much-loved book cart.
Roger Mifflin and Helen McGill are a wonderful team and it was a joy to read about them in Parnassus on Wheels! If you're interested in books and old-timey adventures, you will surely enjoy this small novel.
It's not my favorite book-about-books, but I really liked it. (P.S. Also, Helen's brother Andrew, is a cranky and ungrateful old bore and I did not like him.)...more

I originally borrowed this from the library and started to read it, but I ended up getting an audio book version so I could listen while I walked and did chores around the house and garden.
What a joy to listen to! This novel is written in a way that is authentic and extremely relatable. You almost forget that the book is contemporary and not written in the late 1930s. The narrator is wonderful and I highly recommend this version if you like audio books.
I adored all of the characters (especially Grace, Mr. Evans and George), even the unlikable ones, and I felt extremely sad when the book ended. I wanted to know more about Grace’s life after this story.
This novel has everything I love reading about: books, bookstores, friendship, love, family, and the domestic situations during war time.
There were also tons of book mentions throughout the book. I kept an ongoing list of the ones I hadn’t read yet, including The Count of Monte Cristo.
So happy that I came across this book! Highly recommended!!...more
Absolutely 5 Stars! Maybe 10 Stars! I loved this book so much that it was one of the few books that I wanted to start again right after finishing it. Absolutely 5 Stars! Maybe 10 Stars! I loved this book so much that it was one of the few books that I wanted to start again right after finishing it. The story touched me so deeply. The characters are so well-developed that you truly feel as if you've known them as friends. I can't say enough about this book and I hope that Ms. Albus writes another book very soon!!
I smiled, I cringed, I laughed, and I cried. I may just re-read this again in December (I don't want to spoil anything and give my reasons why...) and it will be a book I'm going to recommend to everyone who loves middle grade books and books during the interwar years. It was just SO GOOD!
I don't have a huge list of books I hug when I'm done reading, but A Place To Hang the Moon is going on that list. A story full of kindness, compassion, patience and friendship that should be shared with the whole world.
P.S. I especially loved the book list at the end and can't wait to work my way through it!...more

The difficulty I had with this book was that it wasn’t (for me) easily readable. I didn’t feel compelled to pick up the book as I walked by. It took me much longer to read Steeped in Stories, even though it’s a slim volume.
I was also surprised at the level of religious context and bible quotes in every chapter. I wish I had known it was a book about children’s’ books, but with a strong overtone of organized religion.
This book wasn’t for me, but I was grateful for the knowledge and some of the insights that I received from it....more
