It's not everyday I read cozy mystery set in ROMANCE NOVEL bookstore, since bookstore that I visit in the books usually sell many genres. Death of a Red-Hot Rancher is the first book of Love is Murder Mystery written by Mimi Granger. While this author seems like a new author, actually Mimi Granger is one of many pen names of Connie Laux and I already read her other pen names books when she write under the name Lucy Ness (her books is Haunted Mansion series). I don't know why the reason behind so many pen names. Maybe to differs genre of the book she writes? I did notice since Lucy Ness write supernatural cozy mysteries, while Mimi Granger write a romcom cozy mysteries.
True to the book description, the story is quirky. The citizens of Tinker Creeks love to gossips. The opening is over the top since I don't get the hotness that the most eligible bachelor in the town, Brody Pierce, has that make many ladies swoon. Yes, I get that he's the small town hero since he also star in the truck commercials but decide to get back home to own a bison ranch. But really, is he that hot to trot? Lel, not likely and I think this is just the way of Granger poke fun to the western kind of hero. Brody is not the hero tho, he's the victim. It's up to our heroine, Lizzie Hale, the owner of the sole romance novel bookstore in Tinker Creeks named Love under the Covers, to solve the mystery of Brody murder since she also want to protect her aunt, Charmaine, because Brody was seen last time with Charmaine.
I did like Lizzie Hale. This book is told entirely from Lizzie's first PoV and I liked that despite her sleuthing, she have some flaws. Sure she love romance novel and ready to defend said genres from book snobs such as the town local librarian that prefer literature over fiction. But in the real life romance, Lizzie is not sure and her reaction when she fumbling and loss at words while talk with handsome men is kinda adorable. I get it since I once like that, lol. Lizzie is also not tough cookie or badass, she just determined to prove that her aunt is not the culprit. Actually, this part is also the weakness of this book because Granger seems to prolonged with the way Lizzie tip toed around Charmaine. Is Charmaine really have relationship with Brody despite Brody is a ladies man? What Brody did in Charmaine house at night and why they seems so cozy to each other? This is the part that drive me nuts since I want Lizzie just to ask since Charmaine herself also didn't seems like that shocked when knowing news about Brody's death.
Anyway, despite the book have your standard cozy when its come to romance department in which usually the heroine get entangled with the hero whom is part of law enforcement, I like the dynamic between Lizzie and her love interest, Max Alvarez. Usually, in cozy I read, the police/detective/etc will shoo away the heroine of their sleuthing, to mind her own business and stop their investigating. Max is different. He welcome Lizzie's help in investigation. Maybe because while Max is a ranger, he's also outsider and the local cop that happen to be Lizzie cousin is also busy. I liked that Max and Lizzie go together in their investigation and enjoy their interactions. That's why even in the last Max still ask Lizzie to go away, I still can accept it since Max rarely antagonize Lizzie while investigating and he also accept her helps.
The mystery is solid and the culprit is can be predicted though the whydunnit is still belieavable. Aside of the mystery, I liked that this book have so many bookish elements and I recognize some of author names. Even the authors is the old ones such as Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Georgette Heyer and some recents ones like Julia Quinn and Tessa Dare. The romance theme ofc will not complete without one or two paragraph mention Pride and Prejudice, lol. I have a blast reading Death of Red-Hot Rancher because Mimi Granger can balanced the mystery, romance, humor and the dynamic of the small town citizens.
Also, the doggo, Violet is freakin adorable! ...more
Berasa makan snack, enak buat camilan, light, tapi ya udah gitu aja.
Bagian tentang Dresden cukup lucu, karena gue jadi inget bahasan kami dulu soal buku - buku Karl May.
Baca DTBkTB sedikit banyak mengingatkan gue sama salah satu mimpi anak- anak BBI dulu mau bikin buku tentang Literatourism, gabungan literasi dan jalan - jalan.

I rarely read young adult novels, mostly because the characters often irked me since I read them from my 30-ish PoV and apparently I forgot that I once was teenager myself, lol. Also, love triangle used to drive me nuts. But, I already smitten by the cover of Sorcery of Thorn, the sophomore novel by Margaret Rogerson. Plus, it's a book about books, especially library. A dream made book, for sure. However, before I read this, I read my mutual reviews and decide to lower my expectation when finally decide to read the book.
I'm glad that I end up liked it. Not a lot of course, and not too blow my socks off. Like I said, I usually avoid young adult titles because reasons I mention above. But, I find that right now I don't really mind since my reading taste always evolved. Sure that this book have a slow beginning, but honestly I enjoy read it from the start to the end. The strength of this book is its simplicity. The book set in a vaguely Britain Island setting or you can say it as alternate universe of England. It's also happen to set in 19th century although I don't feel the vibes, one of this book's weakness for sure.
The story pretty much straightforward. It's about Elizabeth Scrinever, an apprentice in the Summershall Great Library whom soon find herself become a key witness to the sabotage event in the library and must save the world from an egomaniac wizard. In this world, people live harmoniously with sorcerer. Yet, Elizabeth constantly reminded that magic is evil. Since Great Library also a home to many dark and malicious grimoires that the sorcerer or Magister used its spell. Although with the story unfold, not all grimoires are evil because some of them are harmless especially class 1 to 4. Elizabeth that act prejudiced toward sorcerer, magic and their demon cohort, in the end become entangled with one, Magister Nathaniel Thorn and his demon companion, Silas. Turn out that Nathaniel and Silas are the only people that Elizabeth can trust when everything fundamental about libraries that she knows are turn upside down.
Sorcery of Thorns are pretty much stand alone and perfect if you want to read a fantasy with romantic element without the fuss to follow so many books in one series. Yes, the story is straightforward, the world building is simple and easy to understand, the characters while seems mundane enough and maybe not that memorable, I find them to be okay. I'm surprised to see that Elizabeth didn't annoyed me and trust me, I'm easily annoyed by wishy-washy heroines especially in the young adult titles. Elizabeth sure act prejudiced at first, but I like that bit by bit she release all her prejudice and act accordingly to what her heart tell. I like that she's soft, and I realize that reading so many hard-edge heroine can be exhausting. Elizabeth have skill with sword, but often I see that she's so emphatic to people who dear for her and in this case, Nathaniel and Silas. I like her relationship with Nathaniel and Silas, how she slowly warmed toward them and didn't hesitate to save them when they are in the great peril. From all the characters, I liked Silas the most, maybe because it's nice to see the demon who believe himself devoid of emotion and compassion yet in the end he evolve to something much better. The romance between Elizabeth and Nathaniel is okay and for me, it's believable. I liked when Nathaniel admit that he falling first to Elizabeth and fall harder day by day. Also, Rogerson write him as a bi and Elizabeth is totally okay with that.
The strength of this book lay in the final act and my favorite scene is when the grimoire takes stand to the world-end problems. Rogerson write that the grimoire is not only book, but they also have a soul, they can feel despite their malicious upbringing. I also like the way Rogerson put her insight, how women's voice constantly unheard of. Some of ironic part happen when Elizabeth declared insane and hysteric because apparently she read so many novels! While this is pretty amusing, I remember that reading so many novels apparently considered as an ailment and must be treated accordingly. How rude! Some of the characters have surname with bookish content, like Elizabeth's surname (Scrivener) and her friend Katrien, her surname is Quillworthy. I guess, this book can't be more bookish with its library setting and grimoires, but seems that I'm wrong!
Sorcery of Thorn is one of those good young adult title I had read and I'm also glad that there's no unnecessary love triangle or a heroine with so many potential love suitor flock to her. This book is perfect to read in a cozy setting but with some internal conflict and high stakes as well. I will recommend this if you want to read a fantasy romance YA stand alone with library as its setting and characters that you will end up love. ...more

Walau judul terjemahannya "Kisah Hidup A.J.
Selain tentang A.J, buku ini menceritakan orang - orang lain di sekitar A.J.
Membaca kisah hidup A.J dan orang sekitarnya terasa seperti membaca kisah teman lama.
Kelemahannya mungkin terjemahannya agak kurang luwes.
A.J berpikir betapa serupanya semua terlihat di bagian genre kriminalitas. Mengapa satu buku berbeda dari buku lainnya? A.J memutuskan, mereka berbeda karena memang berbeda.
Lha kok iso?
Apakah Vlad the Impaler memang seorang vampir?
We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
"Semua anak memitoskan kelahirannya sendiri. Itu karakteristik umum. Kau ingin mengenal seseorang?
Sama lucunya dengan predecessornya, Weird Things Customer Say in Bookshops.
:))...more

Makasih sekali lagi pula buat Jen karena sukses bikin mood baca saia balik lagi setelah kemaren sempat bete gara - gara the book with black cover that not worthy of the drama.
Bikin saia sadar, konsumen emang raja, tapi mereka tetap manusia biasa. Tetap bisa berlaku aneh :)).
I will wait for your next book, Jen! Keep entertain us! ;D
Beberapa bagian favorit :)) :
CUSTOMER: Do you sell reading books? BOOKSELLER: Errr . . . CUSTOMER: You know, books you can read? BOOKSELLER: Did you have anything in mind? Fiction? Biography? Any other subject? CUSTOMER: Just reading. BOOKSELLER: Oh, sorry, do you mean books on learning how to read? My mistake. Yes, I can show you . . . CUSTOMER (interrupts): NO! I JUST WANT A BOOK TO READ! BOOKSELLER: ...
CUSTOMER: Do you have any of those books where you can change the names of the main character to the name of the person you’re giving the book to? Do you have Alice in Wonderland, but not Alice, I’d like Sarah in Wonderland. BOOKSELLER: I’m afraid you have to buy those from the publisher, as they’re a print on demand service. CUSTOMER: Yeah, I don’t really have time to do that. Do you have a copy of Alice? Then I can buy some Tipp-ex or something, and edit it.
