Rebel Without Sel
Social and Emotional competence is the ability to understand, manage, and express the social and emotional aspects of ones life.. In other words, its crucial for kids to be exposed to SEL in order to cope with life. Researchers point to 5 competency areas: selfawareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These are basic to negotiating school, work, and life tasks effectively.
Schools that proactively promote SEL will look different. It will require advocacy and enthusiasm. Everyone must be on board and involved. It must be advertised and integrative. Activities should be built into curriculum areas such as Social Studies and Literature. Discussion groups must be organized and time allotted for weekly meetings. Counselors need to be involved in these groups as well as the implementing of other activities such as guest speakers. Goals must be set and be clear. The results will be worth the efforts!
