About the Piyut!
This is a Piyut for the Sabbath day which has gained very widespread recognition. In the Ashkenazi
tradition it is sung during the Sabbath meal, in the Jewish community of Khaleb it is sung during the
baqashot prayers, and amongst North African Jews it is sung during the Sabbath as a traditional song. The
authors name is eternalized in the acronym made up by the first word of each verse (it reads Yitzchak
Luria Chazak). The Sabbath day is described here as a comfort and a source of light to all who observe her
commandments, given at Mount Sinai. It follows that the redemption of the people of Israel, promised to

English Translation!
This day is light and joy for Israel!
Sabbath of rest!
You commanded the appointed ones at Sinai!
To keep Sabbaths and festivals every year!
To set festive meals before me!
Sabbath of rest!
The desire of the nations broken hearts!
For hurting souls an additional spirit !
Sighing will be removed from pained souls!
Sabbath of rest!
You have sanctified and blessed it above all other days!
In six [days] You completed the creation of the world!
On it the grieved find calm and security!
Sabbath of rest!
The Awesome One commanded us forbidding work!
I will attain the splendor of kingship if I keep the Sabbath!
I will offer gifts to the feared One, a fragrant flour offering!
Sabbath of rest!
I will arrange a song for You with pleasant accompaniment!
Before Your great splendor my soul yearns for You!
Keep Your promise to the perfect treasure!
Sabbath of rest!
Accept my prayer as the offering of Nahshon!
And my day of rest with joy and gladness!
Beloved as the pupil of an eye with great success!
Sabbath of rest!
