Lesson 2 - Math

The lesson teaches students to measure objects using meters and centimeters. Students will first measure the distance between two pieces of tape with their workbook and string. They will then measure various classroom objects with a meter stick or centimeter ruler, deciding which unit is most appropriate. Formative assessments during the lesson and workbook pages will check understanding. Students can work in groups if needed and show understanding in multiple ways. The goal is for students to accurately measure objects in both centimeters and meters and compare the measurements.

College of Education
Lesson Plan Format
Reflection from prior lesson:
The previous lesson went very well. The students did a measuring lesson on the promethean
board. They were very excited about using the virtual ruler and getting to write their addition and
subtraction problems on the board. The Promethean Board lesson took a little longer than
expected, so we had very little time for discussion after the worksheets. Many of the students
understood right away that drawing a diagram AND doing the addition or subtraction can help
you check your answers. As a result, grades on the 9.4 worksheets where very good.

Lesson Goal(s)/Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1
Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers,
yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.2
Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two
measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

Objectives:
Using a meter sick and a ruler, students will measure the lengths of objects in both centimeters
and meters with 100% accuracy.
After measuring the lengths on the objects, students will compare and contrast the meter and
centimeter measurements.
After the lesson, Students will be able to correctly identify the proper unit of measure to use to
measure certain objects with 5 out of 5 times.

Materials Needed:
Centimeter ruler, meter stick, masking tape, student workbook, Chapter 9 Lesson 5 introduction
video, String

Contextual factors/Learner Characteristics:

There are 9 students in the class, 5 girls and 4 boys. There is a promethean board in the
classroom and students have daily work books that contain several worksheets for each math
lesson. The majority of the students are visual, hands on learners. They are highly engaged in
active learning opportunities.
A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (15 minutes)

Getting Attention/Relating to Past Experience: First, go through the number of

the day. Ask students to write each answer on a white board, review the
answers. Next, show the introduction video that comes with the text book. The
video is approximately 5 minutes long. It relates the lesson to previous
lessons, introduces the lesson, and gives examples of problems in the section.
(10 minutes)

Sharing Objectives/Need to Know: Ask the students, If you knew that a piece
of yarn is 30 cm long, could you use it to measure the length of a table? How?
Think for a minute, what are some things that you would measure in
centimeters, what are some things you would measure in meters? (5 minutes)

2. Content Delivery (40 minutes)

Masking Tape Measure: Place one piece of tape on floor. Place another piece
of tape on about 1 meter away for the first piece. Instruct the students to use
their math workbook to measure the distance between the two pieces of tape.
Once they measure, have the students write the measurement on the
correlating page of the worksheet. Once all students have measured the
distance with the book, instruct them to measure the same distance with the
piece of string and write the measurement on the sheet. (10 minutes)

Worksheets: Finish the masking tape worksheet as a class. Allow the students
some time to look at the questions then complete it as a class. Discuss the
answers and possible solutions (math talk). Once everyone is finished with the
first worksheet, tell them to complete the next pages on their own. The
following pages have the students measure different classroom objects with
either a meter stick or a centimeter ruler. The students will have to decide
which unit that is the most appropriate for the items. The students will be
participating in an inquiry lesson, guided by their worksheets. While they
measure, the teacher will circulate the room observing the students and
answering questions. (30 minutes)

3. Closure: (5 minutes)

Ask students which unit they used the most. Discuss what the difference
between a meter stick and a centimeter ruler is. How many centimeters are
on the centimeter ruler? How many are on the Meter stick? About how many
centimeter rulers fit in one meter stick? (2 minutes)

Exit Ticket: Have the students answer the following questions on their white
boards. What would I use to measure the length of this wall? What would I
use to measure my pen? What would I use to measure the length of the
Promethean Board? What would I use to measure the top of your desk?
Discuss student answers. (3 minutes)

B. Assessments Used: The main assessment will be formative. The teacher will observe the

students during the masking tape measurement, class discussions, worksheet

measurements, and during the exit slip to check for understanding. The workbook pages
will be used as a quantitative assessment to check for understanding and will show need
for review/re-teaching.

C. Differentiated Instruction: Students will be able to ask the class/teacher questions if

they need assistance during the lesson. If needed, students can work in groups to
complete the lesson and worksheets. Lastly, students will be able to show their
understanding in several different ways through observations, discussions, and
worksheets.
