Cefuroxime

Cefuroxime is an antibiotic used to treat cellulitis that works by binding to the bacterial cell wall membrane and causing cell death. It should not be used by those with hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or during pregnancy and lactation. Common side effects include thrombophlebitis, diarrhea, nausea, rash, pruritus, urticaria, and possible seizure or increased liver enzymes. Nurses should check for allergies, monitor IV sites for signs of phlebitis, and watch for changes in bowel habits or fluid balance.
