Course Description:
This course is an extension of the Math I course. Students expand on their prior knowledge of Algebra with
further investigation of functions such as quadratic functions. Students will analyze, interpret, build, transform, and
model quadratics. In addition, students explore similarities, right triangle trigonometry, and geometric proofs. An
emphasis on integrating geometric concepts with algebraic skills is reinforced throughout the year. Lastly,
students will extend the number system beyond their prior knowledge of non-real solutions and students will
analyze applications of probability. Students apply learned skills via real-world applications and approach problem
solving both logically and creatively. Overall, we want our students to leave our course with a strong sense of
problem solving while understanding that mistakes are part of the problem solving process.
Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Apply mathematics as a language to simplify and analyze the world around them.
Develop their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Effectively communicate their mathematical understandings.
Instructional Materials:
This class will not have a primary textbook. We will use a variety of supplemental materials including games,
activities, handouts, and excerpts from a variety of textbooks. Students will receive supplemental materials on a
regular basis and are responsible for reading and organizing them. To further assist any parent/student in help, I
provided a list of resources below.
Resources:

Also, there will be a webpage
There are tons of great applications for mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.
Remind 101
As a communication tool, I will be using Remind 101 (now known as Remind). Remind is a one-way texting tool
that allows the teacher to send a reminder to do an assignment or just to reminder of anything. I will send out
more information via e-mail about how to set it up. For more information: https://www.remind.com/

Grading:
The following is a breakdown of school wide grading categories and weighting:
Class activities, Homework, and Participation 15%
Quizzes 20%
Unit Exams 30%
GRASPS 20%
Semester Final Exam 15%
Final Exam (15%) At the end of each semester students will be given a cumulative final exam.
Performance Assessments (70%) Performance assessments will include unit exams, projects, and quizzes.
Exams or final projects (GRASPS) will be given at the end of every unit and will be worth 30% of your
grade. If you miss an exam, you must contact Ms. Adler within 1 week of the original exam date to
schedule a make-up in order to receive any credit on the exam.
FINAL ASSESSMENT RETAKE POLICY: All Students may opt to complete exam corrections within one
week of return date and receive no more than 50% credit. These corrections are limited to 1 per
semester, per course. The same option applies to GRASPS. Students must complete a reflection form
prior to resubmitting corrections. Late GRASPS will receive a letter grade deduction each day (50%
maximum) and must be submitted prior to the end of the quarter in which the assessment was assigned.
Quizzes and smaller projects will be given frequently and will be worth 40% of your grade. Quizzes can
be corrected one time for up to 50% credit. Corrections can only be made during the course of the unit in
question.
Homework and In-class Assignments (15%) Homework will be assigned and collected almost every class.
Students must show ALL your work in order to earn full credit. Late homework/in class assignments will require a
late work reflection form to be completed and attached to the work when handing it. Based upon your reflection
sheet, you may receive half credit for homework submitted late. No late homework will be accepted from any
unit once the next unit has started.
Absences: Students are responsible for obtaining material and homework assigned on class days when they are
absent. Students must get the notes from a friend, check the homework calendar, check the Edmodo or
TeacherEase, or check with the teacher. Missing assignments in the case of an excused absence are due
the class period after your return to class.
Students are expected to submit assignments on a regular basis, adhere to deadlines, and have an approved
excuse for missing class. Missing assignments in the case of an excused absence must be submitted on
the day you return to class. It is your responsibility to contact or email your teacher for assignments
when absent.
SCHOOL-WIDE RETAKE POLICY:
All Students may opt to complete test corrections within one week of return date and receive no more than 50%
credit. These corrections are limited to 1 per semester, per course. The same option applies to
GRASPS. Students must complete a reflection form prior to resubmitting corrections. Retaking/correction of
quizzes is at the discretion of the individual classroom teacher. Late GRASPS will receive a letter
grade deduction each day (50% maximum) and must be submitted prior to the end of the quarter in which the
assessment was assigned. Late homework/in class assignments will require a late work reflection form to be
completed and attached to the work when handing it. It is up to the teacher's discretion to accept the late work
based on the student's reflection.

4
Semester One Scope and Sequence:
The semester will be divided into 4 units. The themes are as follows:
Unit Name Focus/Topics/EQs
Extending the Number System
How do relationships between concepts, such as a power and a root, help
us solve equations/ problems?
Why can we use the same rules in new contexts?
Is there a best way of describing the patterns that you see?
How can a number not be real?
Quadratic Functions:
Graphing and Modeling
What can the graph of a function tell us?
How do you create an appropriate function to model data and what is the
advantage of having such a model?
Quadratic Functions:
Analyzing and Manipulating
Why doesnt changing the form of an expression change the essential
meaning of the expression?
What does it mean to make strategic choices?
Probability
What tools do we have to predict what will happen in the future?
Are there advantages to having a fixed set of outcomes when youre trying
something new?
