LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEM II,
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA
PROJECT PERIOD
OCT 1991 TO DEC 1995
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Structural Design development for the 22 km long
elevated part of the Light Rail Transit System II in
Kuala Lumpur city. including design development and
detailed designs for the superstructure, sub-structure
and foundations. Standard spans of various
configurations and special crossings over major
highways and other obstacles constitute the elevated
structure. Factory-made precast box girder segments
are used for the superstructure in conjunction with
"dry" joints and external prestressing tendons.

covering a total length of

245km. The plan is to be
implemented in four
phases by 2021. The first
phase, comprising 66km
length, was completed at
the end of 2005. The
second phase is presently
underway.
An important characteristic
of the project is fast track
construction utilizing as
little space as possible on

inconvenience to traffic
and people. Aesthetics
was given the highest
consideration considering
the structure is always
going to be in the public
consciousness and for this
reason construction too
was carried out in an

manner.

DMRC LINE 1 AND LINE 3 OF PHASE- I
Standard Spans: Major Portion of Viaduct
The Elevated Viaduct of the Shahadara-Rithala Line, has typical standard spans varying between 21.6m and 29.1m determined mainly by the site
constraints at ground level for the placement of foundations and piers. All precasting was done at a centralised casting yard. The alignment is
characterized by sometimes-tight curvatures as it snakes through some of the most crowded areas of the city. It has several breaks at the location
of stations. A comparison of Line 1 and Line 3 viaducts is shown below as Artists Impression:
The change in conception from using Box Girder in Line 1 to using U-Girder in Line 3 was an improvement from the points of view of:
As in all jobs heavily dependent on large scale precast segments, standardization of formwork was the key feature of planning. The span lengths
were fixed so that they differed always by multiples of 2.5m, which represented the length of the typical segment. A set of moulds for one span was
designed to be used for all the standard spans

STATIONS
PROJECT PERIOD:
AUG 1999 TO DEC 2000
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The structures consist of a station building and two
parallel bridge structures to support two rail tracks. The
length of the station building as well as the bridges in
the current scope of work is approximately 200m.
The total width of island platform plus adjacent bridge
structures on either side, is about 22m. Both the island
platform as well as the bridges are raised above the
present ground by about 7m to 8m. There is likely to be
a general filling of upto 3.0m over the site to make up
the required plinth level. As per present contemplation,
the station structure (Platform and Roof) is supported
over the piers of the bridge structures, which are located
at approximately 15m spacing. The maximum column
loads are estimated to go up to 600 tons. In association

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The project is situated on the 8-lane Barakhamba Road, which is an
arterial road of Connaught Place with prestigious and high-rise
commercial establishments on either side. Careful planning was
required in the execution of work to ensure that at least four lanes were
available to existing traffic at all times. The project consists of a double
track underground station (250 m long, 30 m wide) with rectangular
tunnel on either side. Total length of project is 645 m constructed by cut-
and-cover method with top down approach with maximum depth of
excavation as 18 m. Diaphragm wall was preferred over other methods
such as sheet piling, soldier piles etc. to avoid excessive noise as well
as to minimize the effect of construction on buildings in the vicinity.

IN PHASE-1A OF THE PROJECT
Client: Metro link Express For Gandhinagar and
Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Limited
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
MEGA aims to create a landmark metro rail project not only for the state of Gujarat but also for the whole country. Seamless connectivity, minimum
land acquisition, world class state- of- art infrastructure, fastest implementation, least construction cost are some of the key features of the project.
The proposed Metro cum Regional Rail Transit System (MRRTS) for Gandhinagar- Ahmedabad connects the administrative capital of State
Gandhinagar with Ahmedabad city. Apart from intercity connectivity, it also connects eastern & western part of Ahmedabad city and Ahmedabad
International Airport.
Proposed length is approximately 83 km with 53 stations. 19 km stretch in this length is proposed to be underground while remaining
will be elevated.
Phase 1A of the project is 29.5 km long elevated stretch from AEC to Akshardham. Standard spans of 25 m (Max) are proposed on
monopiles. The structural form chosen for viaduct structure is single pier supporting two precast pretensioned open profile girders
(one for each track). Open profile girder has been selected to have rail level at minimum level possible. At crossover locations, precast
pretensioned I girder with cast-in-situ deck slab are proposed.

UNDERPASS AT ROTARY NEAR DOMESTIC AIRPORT ALONG
ROAD CONNECTING TO DWARKA
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Presently there is a heavy traffic congestion at the Rotary near the Domestic Airport, Delhi, especially during the
morning and evening peak hours. It was found that majorly of the congestion was due to the large traffic volume
from Delhi & Gurgaon going to Dwarka. Hence, it was decided to make a one way underpass from
Delhi (Dhaula Kuan) & Gurgaon to Dwarka, below the existing Rotary.
A combination of Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) and Retaining Wall is being made to find an optimum of construction
time and cost and yet find a feasible construction. At certain places, underlying rock is comparatively shallow,
though still below the base slab of the underpass. A specialized construction detailing has been prepared
to tackle such locations.
