SABBATH SCHOOL LESSONS

SENIOR DIVISION

Second Quarter of 1955.

The BOOK of
REVELATION

"Blessed is he that keepeth the· sayings

of the prophecy of this book."
FOREWORD
The Sabbath School lessons for this Second Quarter of
1955, covering Chapters 18-22 of Revelation, will conclude
the stuely ot the book of Revelation. We trust that you
will have gained a better unders·tanding of the important
truths contained in this last book of the' Holy Bible. and that
you, together with the believers throughout the world, are
truly thankful for this opportunity to know the truths just
necessary for the time in which we are living today.
There is much more that could be studied from this pro-
phetic book and more yet to be understood as God reveals
it. However, a faithful adherence to the truths found. herein
will make us recipients of the following promise as given
us by the Spirit of Prophecy.
"New light will ever be revealed on the word of God
to him who is in livng connection with the Sun of Righteous-
ness. Let no one come to the conclusion that there is no
more truth to be revealed. The diligent, prayerful seeker
for truth will find precious rays of light yet to shine forth
from the word of God. Many gems are yet scattered that are
to be gathered together to become the property of the rem-
nant people of God. But light is not given simply to be a
strength to the church, but to be shed upon those who are
in darkness. The people of God are to show forth the praises
of Him who hath called them out of darkness into His marvel-
lous light. Christ has said of His people, 'Ye are the light
oft the world: and it is the mission of light to shine out and
illuminate the darkness." Counsels on Sabbath School Work,
p. 34.
NOTICE
The great interest revealed by many in the prophecies
of the Bible bookS'" Daniel and Revelation, has greatly
served to encourage us in preparing material for publishing
a book, "Daniel and Revelation;" explaining these timely
prophecies.
Since the task is a great one, we want to share with
you the burden of compiling the necessary material for its
publication. We would appreciate receivng from you any
additional documents or evidence that you may have ac-
cumulated from the Bible, Testimonies or uthet reliable
sources relative to the subject matter of these two books
which has not been covered in the Sabbath School lessons.
Be sure that proper source references is given in support of
the evidence that you produce. Address your letters to the
address of the publishing house given below. We thank you
lor your co-operative interest.

THE FOURTH ANGEL AND THE

LAODICEAN MESSAGE
(Introduction: To God's professed people, Revelation 18 con-
veys truths of utmost importance. The truths portrayed to
us in the Iirst part of the chap'ter have a dual application, and
may be divided into (a) Application to the Church in the
Laodicean Message, and (b) Application to the World in the
Final Warning. This lesson deals with the application to the
church-The Laodicean Message, and the following lesson
No. 2 deals with the application to the World-The Final
Warning).
Questions
1. !What significance is to be placed upon the mission of
the angel in Revelation 18:1?
NOTE: Uriah Smith, a pioneer of the Advent Movement
says: "Some movement of mighty power is symbolized in
these verses." Daniel and Revelation p. 715.
games Whiie, in his editorial "Th~ Loud Voice of the
Third Angel", gives some idea of his conception of the mag-
nitude of the work to be accomplished in future years (see
quotation given in note to que5tion 2.)
John the Revelator in describing the consumation of the
gospel reveals the light and the glory attending this mighty
angel by saying, "and, the earth waf?! lightened with his glory.
2. To which time did the pioneers of the Advent Movement
look for the fulfillment of this message?
NOTE: "We are now in the time of the third message, and
the preparatory work for the loud cry of this message is
going on... The work of the 'angel of chapter 18, is future, for
it is a message to escape the last plagues, and will introduce
the loud cry of the third message. With this view we get
an exalted idea of the e"Xtent and power of the closing work
of the message.. '... " "The Loud Voice of the Th;ird Angel,"

5. How does the Spirit of Prophecy describe that the mes-
sage of the fourth angel will
swell into a loud voice?

NOTE: "The third angel's message is to be given with power.

The power of the proclamation of the first and sec~s
sages is to be intens'ified in the third. In the Revelation fohn
says of the heavenly messenger who unites with the third
angel, 'I saw another angel come down from heaven, having
great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
And he cried mightily with a strong voice.' Rev. 18:1,2."
Testimonies, Vol. 6, p. 60.
6. What danger was foreseen by the Spirit of Prophecy in
regard to the final warning?
NOTE: "We are in danger of giving the third angel's mes··
sage in so indefinite a mann~hat it does not impress the
people." Testimonies, Vol. rp. 60.
7. How can we compare the burden which Paul felt for
the Ephesian church with the responsibility resting upon
those who are entrusted to proclaim the third angel's
message~. ,Acts 20:26,27./ -r>"r~ u~
~/--V-~~<{. ~~~.
NOTE: "The message that we nave to bear is not one that
we need cringe to declare. Its' advocates ~ot to seek 12
cow .il~conceal....its origin and purpose. As those who
have made solemn vo.;;;s GeforeC;a, andwho have been com·
missioned as the messengers of Christ, as stewards of the
mysteries of grace, we are under obligation to declare faith-
fully the whole counsel of God." Gospel Workers, p. 288.
8. What chanhel does the Lord use to diHuse the increas-
ing light to the world?
NOTE: "God has mad~ church o!J-,the earth a channel
of light, and through it e communicates His purposes and
His will? Acts of Apostles, p. 163.
9. What fundamental truth has every member of thel church
to understand, that he may not ~e deceived?

NOTE: "He (God) does not give to one of His servants an

experience independent of and contrary to the experience of
the church itsell. Neither does He give one man a know-
ledge of His w.m for the _entire church, while the church-
-Christ's body- is left in darkness. In His providence, He
places His servants in close connection with His church in
order that they may have less- confidence in themselves, ~nd
greater confidence in others whom He is leading out to ad-
vance His wbrk." Acts of Apostles, p. 163.
10. ,When and why did the Spirit of Prophecy begin to apply
the messag'e of Laodicea to the Adventist Church?
NOTE: "As I have oll late looked around to fin~ the humble
followers of 'the meek and lowly Jesus, my mind has- been
much exercised. Many who profess to be looking for the
speedy coming of Christ are becoming conformed, to this
world, and seek more earnestly t pplause of os-e ar d
th n the .a . n 0 God. They are cold an formal
like the nomin TC11es from which they but a short time
since separated. The words addressed to the Laodicean
Church describe their present condition perfectly. See Rev.
3: 14·20. They are neither cold nor hot," but lukewarm."
And unless they heed the counsel of the "faithful and -true
'Mitness," and zealously repent, and obtain "gold tried in
the fire," "white raiment," and "eyesalve: He will spue them
out of His mouth." Eearly Writings, p. 107, from the R & B-
June 10, 1852.
Until this time the message of Laodicea was not ap-
plied to the faithful remnant from Philadelphia, but was ap-
plied to those- who - -the
rejected - -
three -~
angel's messages. How-
ever, the condition of God's people gradually changed to
a "lukewarm" state, and consequently the message to Lao-
dicea was applicable to them also. In 1~ steven ~s
later, the following message was given: '
"I was shown that the testimony to the Laodiceans ap-
plies to God"s people at the present time, and the reason it
has not accomplished a greater work is becauso of the hard-
ness of their hearts. But God has given the mes-sage time
lo do its' work. The heart must be purified from sinS' which
have so long shut out Jesus. This' fearful message will do
its work:" Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 186.
n. What impression was made 'upon the believers, when
the message of Laodicea was applied to the church at
ihat time?
5
NOTE:"Nearly all believed that this message would end in
the loud cry of the third angel. But as they failed to see
the powerful work: accomplished in a short time, many lost
the effect of the message. I saw that this message would
not com lish its work: in few short months. It is designed
to arouse the people of God, to discover to them their pack-
slidings', and to lead to zealous repentance, ·that they may
be favoured with the presence of Jesus, allS!. be fitted for the
loud cry of the thi'rd angelJ' Testimonies', Vol. I, p. 186.

12. What does the Lord permit to come into the church to
awaken the believers from their slumbering state?
NOTE: "God wm arouse His people; if other means fail,
.peresi s will come in among them, which will sift them, sep-
arating the chaff from 1 e w eat. he Lord calls upon all who
believe His word to awaken out of sleep. Precious light
has come, appropriate for this time. It is' Bible truth, showing
the perils that are right upon us. ThJs light should lead us
to a diligent study of the Scriptures, and a most critical exam-
ination of the pOf.itions which we hold." Gospel Workers,
p. 299.

13. ·What opposition was foretold would result when the

message of Laodicea would be applied to the professed
people of God) in our time?
NOTE: "I asked the meaning of the s ~ I had seen
and was shown that it would be cai:i'8'e'1r'1i¥:straight testi-
mony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the
Laodiceans. This will halve its effect upon the hea>rt of the
receliver. and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour
fprth the straight truth. Some will not bear this straight
testimony. They will rise up against ,it, and this is what
will cause a shaking among God's people." Early Wrtings,
page 270.
14. What preparation must be made by God's professed
people, before they can present the final message of
. warning to the world?
NOTE: "Unless .divine "pOWer is brought into the experience
of the people of C;od, false theories and erronevus ideas will
take minds captive, Christ .and His' riqhteousness will be
dropped out of the experience of m(my,~6nd their faith will
6
be without power or life. Such will not have a daily living
experience of the love of God in the heart; and if they do
not zealously repent, they will be among those who are rep-
.esented by the Laodiceans, who will be spued out of the
mouth of God." R & H September 3, 1889.
"r saw that the teshmony of the True Witness has not
been half heeded. The solemn testimony upon which the
aestiny of the church hangs has. been lig,btJy ~steemed, !!.Jwt
entirey disregarded. This testimony must work deep repent-
ance; all who truly receive it will obey it and be purified."
Early Writings p. 270.
These above statements clearly foretell that a shaking
or separation in the Adventist Church is inelVitable. because
,the majority of the members will oppose the tedtimony of the
True Witness, and they are not willing to separate from the
world. Therefore the faithful ones who accept the message
to Laodicea, or a reform message, are compelled to separate
from their company, in ozier to maint' eir fidelity to Go

THE FOURTH ANGEL AND THE FINAL
WARNING TO THE WORLD
Questions
1. What applica~ion was made by the pioneers of the
Ad'ven:t Mbvement regarding the three angels with their
messages in Revelation 14:6-121
NOTE: "These angels are evidently symbolic. for the work
assigned them is that of preaching the everlasting gospel
to the people. But the preaching of the gospel has not been
entrusted to 1iteral angels: it has been committed to men who
are responsible for this sacred trust placed in their hands.
Each of these three angels, therefbre, symbolizes those who
are commissioned to make known to their fellow .men the
spec'ial truths which constitute the burden of these messages."
Daniel and Revelation, p. 629.
2. Is the angel described in Revelation 18:1 also a sym-
bolic messenger as were the previous three angels in
Revelation 14:6-121 Mal. 2:7.
NOTE: The work of preaching the gospel has not been com-
7
mitted to angels, but has been intrusted to men Holy angels-
have been employed in directing this work, they have in
charge the great movements for the salvation of men; but the
actual proclamation of the gospel is performed by the ser-
vants of Christ upon the earth." Great Controversy p. 312.
3. What work is symbolized by this angel and to what
extent does it reach? .
NOTE: "Hence the movement symbolized by the angel com-
ing down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory,
and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins'
of Babylon." Great Cont.rowersy, p. 604.
"The first angel's message is said to go with a 'loud
voice.' The same is also said of the third message, but thiS'
angel, intsead of simply flying 'in the midst of heaven' like
the others, is said to 'come down from heaven.' He com.es
with 0: message more' pointed and direct. He has 'great
power: ond the earth is 'lightened with his glory.' No such.
description of a message from heaven to man is elsewhere-
to be found in all the Bible. This is the last, and aSJ is meet,
it comes w',ith surpassing glory ond unwonted power." Dan-
iel and Revelation, p. 724.
4, Has this phase of the work of the fourth angel toward
the world as described in Revelation 18 already begun,
01' is it a work yet futu:re?

NOTE: "Th;'is scripture points forward to a time when the'

announcement of the fall of Babylon as made by the second
angel of Revelatiorl, 14, is to be rep~ated, with the additional
mention of the corruptions which have been entering the
the various organizations that constitute Babylc.n, since that
message was first given, in the summer of 1844. A terrible-
condition of the religious world is here described." G.c.p. 603.
5. 'What is the sign of the litercrl fulfillment of the fall of
,Babylon. as foretold- by the second angel's message?
NOTE: "Not until this condition shall be reached, and the
union of the church with the world shall be fully accomplished
throughout Christendom, will the fall of Babylon be complete.
The change is a progressive one, and the perfect fulfillment
of Revelation 14:8 is yet future." Great Controversy, p. 390.
6. 'Does Revelation 18:1-4 constitute a special message to
the chuTch and the world?
8
NOTE: "Those who come up to every point, and stand every
-test. nnd overcome, be the price what it may, have heeded
t'he couns'el of the True Witness, and they will receive the
latter rain and thus be fitted for translation." Testimonies,
Vol. 1, PP: 187-188.
"Only those who have withstood and overcome temptation
in the strength of the Mighty One will be permitted to act
a part in proclaiming this message when it shall have swelled
into the loud cry." Reveiw and Herald, Nov. 19, 1908.
"This is the message g'iven by God to be sounded forth
in the loud cry of the third angel." Testimonies Vol. 8, p. 118.
This message of Revelation 18:1-4 has a ·wofold appli-
cation-first, to the church, that she may be prepared for her
work in, proclaiming the loud cry. and second, to the world,
announcing the fall of Babylon and the imminent destruction
of the present civil'ization. Many who are not thoroughly ac-
quainted with the prophecies of Revelation, make a wrong
application of this v:ital message of Revelation 18. They refer
to the future phase of this mes'sage to the world, rather
than concentrating upon the present application of it to the
church of God, that she may be fitted for proclaiming the
loud cry to the world, and for translation.
7. 'How wil~ the warning against the beast and his image
be received by the united Protestant churches? What
prophecy
, wijll then be literally fulfilled?
NOTE: "Revelation 18 points to the time when. CIS the result
of rejecting the threefold warning of Rev. 14:6-12. the church
will have fully renched the condition foretold by the second
angel, and the people of God still lin Babylon will be called
upon to separate from: her communion. This message is the
last that will ever be qiven to the world; nnd it will ac-
complish 'its work." Great ,Controversy, p. 390.
8. What will bring about the climax of the universal
apostasy of Christendom?
NOTE: "As the controversy extends into new fields, and
-the minds of the peol?le are called to God's down-trodden law,
Satan 'is astir. The power attending the message will only
madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth al-
most superhuman efforts to shut away the light, lest it should
:shine upon their flocks. By every menns nt their command
9
they will endeavour to suppress the discuss·ion of these vital
questions. The church appeals' to the strong arm of civil
power, and in this work, papists and Protestants unite. As
the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold
and dedded, the law will be invoked against commandment
keepers." Great Controversy. p. 607.
9. What significance will the uniting of Protestantism and
Catholicism have to the people of God? W'hat event
:immediately foUows? '
NOTE: "As the approach of the Roman armies was a sign
to the disciples of the impending destruction of Jerusalem
so may this apostasy be a sign to us that the limit of God's
forbearance is reached, that the measure of our nation's'
iniquity is full and that the angel of mercy is about to take her
fright, never to return. The people of God will then be
plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress' which
prophets have described as the time of Jacob's trouble." Testi-
monies. Vol. 5, p. 451.
10. By what means will the work of the Lord be completed
and cut short in righteousness? Zech. 4:6.
NOTE:' "From a worldly point of view, money is power; but
from the Christian standpoint, love is power." Test., Vol. 4, p.
138..
"It is not numerous institutions, large buildings, or great
display that God requires, but the harmonious act-ion of a
peculiar people. a people chosen by God and precious. Every
man is to stand in his lot and place, thinking, speaking, and
acting in harmony with the Spirit of God. Then, and not till
then, will the w'ork be a complete, symmetrical whole." Testi-
monies, Vol. 6, p. 293.
It is impossible for the work of God to be finished with
human devising and machinery, or by a mighty army of workers
and missionaries, which symbolize might; or as stated in the
above quotation, by power symbolizing money and riches.
The work of God w:iIl only be finished through men and
women who have beeri sanctified by the present truth they
proclaim, and who are covered with' the robe of Christ's
righteousness.
11. When only does apostle Peter say wiD the refresh~CJ
ftom· the presence of the Lord. or the latter rain, be re-
10
celved? Acts 3:19-21.
NOTE: "The work of the investigative judgment and the
blotting out of sins is to be accomplished before the second
advent of the Lord. Since the dead are to be judged out
of the things wr.itten in the books, it is impossible that the sins
,of men should be blotted out until after the judgment at
which their cases are to be investigated. But the apostle
Peter distinctly states .that the sins of believers will be
blotted out 'when the times of refreshing shall come from
the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus Christ.'
When the investigative judgment closes, Chri!>t will come,
and His reward will be with Him to give to every man as
his work shall be." Great' Controversy, p. 485.
.12. After the justification of the saints has beon completed,
and they have received the latter rain, what event takes
place?
NOTE: "I saw that God had children who do not see .and
keep the Sabbath. They have not rejected the light upon it.
And at the commencement of the time of trouble,' we were
filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed
the Sabbath more fully. ThIs enraged the churches and
nominal Adventists, as they could not refute the Sabbath
truth. And at this time God's chosen all saw clearly that
we had the truth, and they came out and endured the perse-
cution with us. I saw the sword, Vamine, pestilence, and
great confusion in the land. The wicked thought that we
had. brought the judgments upon them. and they rose up
and took counsel to rid the earth of us, thinking that then
the evil would be stayed.." Early Writings, p. 33.
:13. How does the prophet Isaiah describe these evonts
prrior to the seven last plagues? For what class of 'people
will the door of mercy be .closed, but for which class
will it yet be open? Isaiah 26:9.
'NOTE: ,'0 that the people might know the time of their
visitationl There are many who have not yet heard the test-
ing truth for this time. There are many with whom the Spirit
of God is striving. The time of God's destructive judgments
'is the time of mercy for those who have had no opportunity
to Learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them.
"His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out
11
to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter.'"
Testimonies, Vol. 9, p. 97.
According to this description those who have had the'
opportunity to hear the final war;ing and neglected to heed
the council of the True Witness will no longer have the privi-
lege to enter, because the... door 01 mercy is closed lor them.
However, those sincere people 01 other churches who have·
not heard these messages" will now have the last opportunity
to hear and obey the call.

BABYLON THE GREAT IS FALLEN
Questions
1. What ~nnouncement is made in the message of Reve-·
lation 18:2?
2. What similar announcement of the fall of Babylon was
p,'reviously given? . Rev. 14:8.
3. What is the signijicance of the word "Babylon"? Where·
was its origin?
NOTE: The word "Babylon" means "a. place or scene of
noise and confusion", .according to Webster's International
Dictionary. This word carne into existence alter the flood
as result of man's rejection of the divine assurance of God.
=d his reliance upon his own power to build a tower to-
protect himself, in the event another flood would corne upon
the earth. This plan ended 'in confusion. So in the New
Testament language, John the Revelator portrayed the present
confusion of Christendom by the spiritual term of "Babylon".
This applies to a great 1 system of religion which leads the-
world into open rebellion against the Lord.
4. What .consti~ulles "Babylon"? "Rev. 17:1-5.
5. Why is "Babylon'· said to be "the mother of harlots"?'
NOTE: "Babylon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By
her daughte\l's must be symbolized churches that cling to her
doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacri-
ficing the truth and tha approval of God, in order to form an
unlawful alliance"with the world." Great ContrClVersy p. 382-3 ..

6. To wnich churches were the message' of the second
angel applicable in 1844?
:NOTE: The message of Revelation 14, announcing the fall
of Babylon, must apply to religious bodies that were once
pure and have become corrupt. Since J this message follows
the warning of the judgmenf, it must be given in the last
days; therefore it cannot refer to the Roman Church alone,
for that church has been in a fallen condition for many cen-
turies."
"Many of the Protestant churches are following Rome's
example of iniquitous connection with 'the kings of the earth'
-the state churches, by their relation to secular governments;
and other denominations, by seeking the favor of the world.
And the term "Babylon"-confusion-may be applied to these
bodies, all professing to derive their doctrines from the Bible,
yet divided into almost innumerable sects, witl". widely con-
flicting creeds and theories." Great Controve~sy, p. :::m:.~~
7. What further fall of Babylon is announced in ReveJationl8?
NOTE: "The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by
the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention
of the corruptions which have been entering the churches
since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time
to join in the last great work of the third angel's message as
it swells to a loud cry. And the people of God are thus pre-
pared to stand in the hour of temptation, which they are
soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and
they united to fearlessly proclaim the third angel's message."
Early Writings, p. 277.
8. Why is it necessary for the cry about the fall of Babylon
to be repeated by this mighty angel?
NOTE: "Of Babylon, at the time brought to view in this
'prophecy, it is declared 'Her sins have reached unto heaven,
and God hath remembered her iniquities: She has filled
'up the measure of her guilt, and destruction is about to fall
upon her. But God still has a people in Babylon; and' before
·the visitation of His judgments, these faithful ones must be
called out, that th\3Y ~partake not of her sins, and receive
.not of her plagues:" Great Controversy, p. E04.
9. How will the people of God be enabled to give this mes-
sage of the fall of Babylon without fear?
13
NOTE: "But the Spirit of God came upon them as it came
upon Elijah, moving him. to rebuke the sins of a wicked king
and an apostate people; they could not refrain from preach-
ing the plain utterances 0f the Bible,-doctrines which they
had been reluctant to present. They were impelled to zeal-
ously declare the jruth, and the danger which threatened
souls. The words which the Lord gave them they ullered,
fearless of consequences, and the people were compelled
to hear the warning." Great Controversy, p. 606.
10. What description is given of Babylon and her inhabi-
tants? ·Rev. 18:2 (last part)
NOTE: "It is our individual duty to walk humbly with God.
We are not to seek any strange, new mellsage. We are not
to think thai the chosen ~nes of God who are trying to walk
in the light, compose Babylon. The fallen denominational
churches are Babylon. Babylon has been fostering poison-
ous doctrineS', the wine of error. This wine of error is made·
up of false doctrines, such as the natural immortality of the
soul, the eternal torment of the wicked, the denial of the·
preexistence of Christ prior to His birth in Bethlehem, and
advocating and exalting the first day of the week above-
God's holy and sanctified day." Testimonies to Ministers, p. 61.
11. To what extent has the influence of Babylon reClched1'
Rev. 18:3.
NOTE: "These and kindred errors are presented to the world
by the various churches, and thus the Scriptures are fulfilled'
that say, 'For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath.
of her fornication, they are stirred with anger against those·
who will not come into harmony with the fals~ and satanic
heresies which exalt the false sabbath, and lead men to--
trample underfoot God's mSlmorial." Test. to Min. pp. 61-62.

12. What other prophecy ,will be literally fulfilled at the time·

'when this universal confederacy is completed? Rev. 12:17.
NOTE: "The revelator, looking down the ages to the close
of time, has declared, 'The dragon was wroth with the woman,
and went to make war with the remnant- of her seed, which
keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of
Tesus Christ;' Some who to-day are living on the earth will
see these words fulfilled. The same spirit that in' ages past
14
led men to persecute the true church, will in the future lead
to the pursuance of a similar course toward those who main-
tain their loyalty to God. Even now preparations are being
made for this last great conflict." Prophets and Kings, p. 605.

13. What great disappointment will those have who have

followed their leaders rather than a "thus saith the Lord"?
Jeremiah 17:5.
NOTE: "At that )ime the gold will be separ<!led from the
dross. True godliness will be clearly distinguished from the
appearance and tinsel of it. Many a star that we have ad-
mired for its brilliance will then go out in darkness. Those
who have assumed the ornaments of the sanctuary, but are
not clothed with Christ's righteousness, will then appear in
the shame of their own nakedness." ·Prophets & Kinglr, p. 188.

THE LOUD CRY AND THE LATTER RAIN

Questions

1. What other agency will attend the message of Reve-

lationI8:1? Rev. 18:4. (first part)

NOTE: "The voice coming from heaven denotes that it is

a message of power attended with heavenly glory. How
marked becomes the interposition of Heaven, and how the
agents for the accomplishment of God's work multiply, as
the great crisis approaches! This voice from heuven is called
'another' voice, showing that a new agency is here introduced.
We now have five celestial messengers expressly mentioned
as engaged in this last religiouS! reformation. These are the
first, second, and third angels of Revelation 14; fourth, ~the

, angel of verse I of this chapter; and fifth, the agency indi-

cated by the 'voice' of verse 4, now before us. Three of these
are already In operation. The second angel has joined the
first, and the third has joined them. The 'first and second
have not ceased. All three are now united 'in proclaiming
a threefold message. The angel of' verse I here enters upon
his mission, as conditions call for his work. The divine call
from heaven to come out of Babylon takes place in con-
nection with his work." Daniel and Revelation, p. 724.
15

)
2. What is foretold of the extent of the message of the an-
gel 'of Revelation 18?
NOTE: "The angel who unites in the proclamation of the
third angel's message. is to lighten the whole earth with
his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted power
is here foretold, The Advent Movement of 1840-44 was a glori-
ous manifestation of the power of God; the first angel's mes-
sage was carried to every missionary station in the world,
and in some c01!lntries there was the greatest religious Inter-
est which has been witnessed in any land since the Reform-
ation of the sixteenth century; but thes'e are to be exceeded
by the mighty movement under the last warning of the third
angel." Great Controversy, p. 611.
In the 1886 edition of Great Controversy, p. 429, the last
clause reads: "but these are to be far exceeded by the mighty
movement under the loud cry of the third message,"
3. What comparison did the prophet of old use in showing
the remClTkable events attending the beginning and con-
summation 01 the gospel dispensation? Deut. 11 :14.
NOTE: "The work will be similar to that of the day of Pente-
cost. As the 'former rain: was given in the outpouring of
the Holy Spirit at the opening of the' gospel, to cause the
upspringing of the precious seed, so the 'latter rain' will be
given at its close, for the ripening of the harvest." G, C. p. 611.
4. What false hope are some cherishing in their expect-
ation of the refreshing of the Latter Rain?
NOTE: "I saw that many were neglecting the preparation
so needful and were looking to the time of 'refreshing' and
the 'latter rain' to fit them to stand in the day of the Lord
and to live in His sight. Oh, how many 1 saw in the lime
01 trouble without a shelter! They had neglected the needful
preparation; therefore they could not receive the refreshing
that all must have to fit them to live in the sight of a holy
God," Early Writings, p, 71.
5. What provision has the Lord provided for His church
to' develop her character. and so be fitted to receive the
Latter Rain?
,NOTE: "The Latter rain, ripening earth's harvest, represents
the spiritual grace that prepares the church for the coming-
16
of the Son of man. But unless' the former rain has fallen,
there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Un-
less the early showers have done their work, the latter rain
can bring no seed to perfection." Testimonies to Min. p. 506.
6. What can we understand by the "former rain"?
NOTE: "But there must be no neglect of the grace repre-
sented by the former rain. Only those .who are living up to
the light they have will receive greater light. Unless _we
are daily advancing in the exemplification of the active
Christian virtues, we shall not recognize the manifestations
of the Holy Spirit in the latter rain. It may be falling on
hearts all around us, but we shall not discern or receive it."
Testimonies to Ministers, p. 507.
7. What should be understood by "the voice from heaven"?
Matt. 3:17, Matt. 17:5; John 12:28.
NOTE: Just as God acknowledged Jesus as His Son before
the people, so He will acknowledge His people before the
whole world. In a remarkable manner, the Spirit of God
rested upon Jesus at His baptism so at the commencement
of the loud cry, the Spirit of God 'will come in a remarkable
manner from His throne, by the order of the sanctuary, to
crown His people, recognizing them as His before the whole
universe.
8. To which class of people is this final call extended?
Rev. 18:4. (last part). Do the words. "Come out of her,
my people" refer to those who know the present truth
and yet are seeldn,9 the favor of the world?

NOTE: "There are many who have not yet heard the testing
truth for this time. . .. Tenderly will the Lord lo.:.k upon them.
His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out
to save, while the door is closed to those who would not
enter." Testimonies, Vol. 9, p. 97.
"The light that was shed upon the waiting ones pene-
trated everywhere, and those in the churches who had any
light, who had not heard and rejected the three messages.
obeyed the call, and left the fallen churches. Many had
come to years of accountability since these messages had
been given and the light shone upon them, and they were
privileged to choose life or death. Some chose life, and
17
took their stand with those who were looking for their Lord,
and keeping all His commandments." Early Writings, p. 278.
According to these testimonies, those who had the opport-
unity to hear the third angel's message and professed to
believe it, and yet neglected .to prepare for the coming events
and were not sanctified by the present truth, wi!! at that time
have no opportunlly, for the door of mercy is closed to them.
The loud cry is extended only to those who have not had
any previous opportunity to hear the testing truths of the
last warning. Now is the time for those who know and pro-
fess to believe in the present truth to be sanctified by it.

9. What decided position will those take who heed the call?

NOTE: "The state of corruption and apostasy that in the last

days would exist in the religious world, was presented to the
prophet John, in the vision of Babylon, 'that great city, which
reigneth over the kings of' th~ earth.' Before its destruction
the call is to be given from heaven, 'Come out of her, my
people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye
receive not of her plagues.' As in the days of Noah and Lot,
there must be a marked separation from sin and sinners."
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 167,.
10. What condition will be repeated among the remnanf
people of God at that time. and what effect will this
have upon those sincere souls who are still in the apot-
atized churches?
NOTE: "Notwithstanding the wide-spread declension of faith
and piety, there are true follow'ers of Christ in these churche.s
Before the final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth,
there will 'be, among the people of the Lord, such a revival
of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since apos-
tolic times. The Spirit =d power of God will be poured
out upon His children. At that time many will separate them-
selves from those churches in which the love of this world
has supplanted love for God and His word." G. C. p. 464.
11. What remarkable signs will attend this mighty move-
ment of the fourth angel?
NOTE: "In visions of the night representations passed before
me of a great reformatory movement among God's people.
Many were praising God. The sick were healed, and other
18
miracles were wrought. A spirit of intercession was seen,
even as was manifested before the great day of Pentecost.
Hundreds and thousands were seen visiting families, and
opening before them the word of God. Hearts were con-
victed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and 'a spirit of genuine
conversion was manifest. On every side doors were thrown
open to the proclamation of the truth. The world seem~d
to be lightened with the heavenly influence. Great blessings
were received by the true and humble people of God. I
heard voices of thanksgiving cmd praise, and there seemed
to be a reformation such as we witnessed in 1844." Testi-
monies, Vol. 9, p. 126.

12. What count~rfeit display will Satan. make among the

apostatized churches before the final can to come out
will be given? II Thess. 2:11.

NOTE: "The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work;

and before the time for' such a movement shall come he will
endeavour to prevent it, by introducing a counterfeit. In
those churches which he can bring under his deceptive pow'er,
he will
make it appear that God's special blessing is poured
out; there will be manifest what is thought to be great re-
ligious interest.. Multitudes will exult that God is working
marvelously for them, when the work is that of another spirit.
Under a religiotls guise, Satan will seek to extend his in-
fluence over the Christian world." Great Controversy, p. 464.

13. What position will be taken by thOse who have re-

jected the final warning message? What will the people
of God then know?

NOTE: "As the controversy extends into knew fields, and

the minds of the people are called to God's down-trodden
law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will
only madden those who oppose it." Great Contrc..versy, p. 607.
"By the decree of enforcing the institution of the papacy
in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect
herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall
stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the. hand of the
Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp
hands with Spiritualism, when, under the influence of this
threefold union, our country shall repucUate every principle
or its constitution as a Protestant and' Repub!lcan govern-
19
ment and shall make provision for the propagation of papal
falsehoods and delus'ions, then we may know that the time
has come for the mar.velous working of Satan, and that the
end is near." Testi~onies, Vol. 4, p. 451.

THE CLOSE OF PROBATION AND THE IMMrnENT

DOOM OF BABYLON .
Questions
1. What sign at the close of probation has been predicted
by the prophets of old? Isa. 13:9,l0: Joel 3:15,16.
NOTE: "A darkness will cover 'the inhabitants of the earth
when Jesus moves out of the heavenly sanctuary such as
enveloped the earth at 'the time of the crucifixion. This will
be an evidence to those who have known the truth that pro-
bation's hours are past, and the eternal destiny of every s'oul
is sealed beyond recall." Ellen G. White in Review and
Herald, June, 1884.
"When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the in-
habitantS' of the earth. In that fearful time the r:ghteous must
live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor." Great
Controversy, p. 614.
2. What message of comfo;rt has the Lord given to His
people that they may endure through this :time? Isa.
26:20,21.
3. Mil the inhabitants of the world realize that the time
of probation is closed?
NOTE: "The righteous and the wicked will s!ill 'be living
uIDon the earth in their mortal state,~men will be planting
and building, eating and drinking, all unconscious that the
final, irrevocable decision has been pronounced in the sanctu-
ary above.... Silently, unnoticed as the' midnight thief, will
come the decisive hour which marks the fixing of every man's
des1iny, the final withdrawal of mercy's offer to guilty man."
Great Controversy, p. 491.
4. Wbat specific recOll'ds are kept in heaven, and at what
time will God's mercy cease? Rev. 18':5.
NOTE: "God keeps a reckoning with the natiC'ns. Through
~1\ter:Y cenlury
01 this world's history, evil workers have been
treasuring up wrath against the day 01 wrat};; and when
the time lully comes that iniquity shall have reached 'the
stated boundary 01 Gods mercy, his forebear=ce will cease.
When the accumulated figures in heaven's record books shall
mark the. sum 01 transgression complete, wrath will corne,
unmixed with mercy, and then it will be seen what a tre-
mendou's thing it is to have worn out the divine patience.
This crisis will be reached when the nations shall unite in
making void God's law." Testimonies Vol. 5, p. 524.
5. What words of Christ regarding justice will have their
literal fulfUlment at this time? Matt. 7:1.2.
6. What calamity now befal1s the great Babylon, who
dreamed to be p queen forever? Rev. 18:6,7.
NOTE: The apostatized system 01 religion known as Roman
Catholicism has been tolerated by the Lord lor many cen-
turies. From time to time God permitted various nations
to arise to punish her wickedness, but when her sins will
have reached the limit, and the cries 01 the martyrs and
persecuted ones will have risen to heaven, the Lord will
reward and measure out her punishment upon her without
mercy. Spiritually. Babylon has fallen centuries ago, and
the verses here foretell her material fall. "They shall have
judgment without mercy that have showed no mercy." (James
2:13.) •
"Not long hence' they will stand belore the Judge of all
the earth, to render an account lor the pain they have caused
to the bodies and souls of His heritage. They may now In-
dulge in lalse accusations', they may deride those whom God
has appointed to do His work, they may consign His believing
ones to prison, to the chain gang, to banishment, to death; but
lor every pang of anguish every tear shed, they must ans-
wer. God will reward them double lor their sins. Con-
cerning Babylon, the' symbol 01 the apostate church, He says
to His ministers 01 judgment, 'Her sins have reached unto
heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities: Reward
her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double
according to her' works: in the cup which she hath filled fill
to her double. Revelation 18:5,6." Christ's Object Lesso/1s p. 179
7. When is it that the Lord will punish this wicked Babylon?
Rev. 18:7·10.
21
NO'r~: "Such qre thre judg:ments that fall upon Babylon In
the day of the visitation of God's wrath. She has filled
up the measure 01 her iniquity; her time has come; she is
ripe for destructio~:' Great Conrtoversy, p. 653.
8. What lamentations will be made by those who have
had relationship With this harlot? Rev. 18:11·19.
9. What message is given to the inhabitants o~ the heaven
and the faithful on.es of all ages? Rev. 18:21.
10. What assurance is given that the wickedness of Babylon
Will surely be punished and she be destl'oyed? Rev. 18:21.
11. Who is made tesponsible for the wickedness of the earth.
and how complete will her destruction be? Re•. 18:22·24.
NOTE: From all this description we can see that there is
only one Babylon called the greet! city, composed of all the
false religion, with one exception of a' small remnant people
who have remained faithful to God. Before the final des-
truction, the Lord extends a message, a last call, to those
yet in Babylon to cGlme out, that they might not partake of
her punishment. There are many souls who are true seekers
of God's will and light held captive in the great Babylon
of Christ, endom, and they will heed the call before the close
of probc;xtion.

THE TRIUM~H OF THE CHURCH OF G9D

Questions

1. What was revealed to John after the destruction of the

wicked Babylon? Rev. 19:1.
2. What testimony ~s qiYen of the judgments of God upon
Babylon by the redeemed? Rev. 19:2-3-
3. What homage is given by the twenty·four elders and
four beasts, as they see the human family united before
the throne? Rev. 19:4,5. '
4. Whcit honor does the redeemed multitude give to the
Lord? Rev. 19:6.
22
NotE: The words ment19ned by the sqved ones, "lor the
Lord God omnipotent reigneth," should be understood rIghtly.
~t thi~ event the Lord's reignin9 does not commence at
this event, for throughout the world's hif;tory, Be has reigned,
bl\l with mercy. At this time, when th~ wicked are punish~a
and the righteous: redeemed, the theme of prqise and ador-
ation will be the expression 01 loyalty of His subjects.

5. What other work was completed at the end of the investi-

. gative judgment, other than the judging' of the people?
NOTE: "I saw that while Jesus was in the most holy place
He would be married to the New Jerusalem; and aller His
work should be accomplished in the hollest, He would descend
to the earth in kingly power and take to Himself the precious
ones who had patiently wailed His return? E. W. p. 251.
"The marriage represents the reception 01 Christ 01 His
kingdom. The holy city, the New Jerusalem which is the
capital and representative of the kingdom,' is called 'the
bride, the Lamb's wile.''' Great Contro~ersy, p: 426.
6. What long awaited event is now to tgke pla<;e In the
family of God? Rev. 19:7.
7. What words of Christ are now fulfilled? John 14:1-3.

8. In this in.tsqnc~, who constitute the guests?· Luke 12:~ a~

NOTE: "Clearly, then, the bride represents the holy city,
and the virgins that go out to meet the bridegroom are a
symbol of the church. In the Revelation the people of God
are said to be the guests at the marriage supper." G. C. p. 427.
In both the Old and New Testaments, the relation of God
to His people is symbolized by the marriage relation. How-
ever, the exception is made in this instance, when the New
Jerusalem is considered as ."tl;1e br.ide." The marriage of
Christ with the holy city was accomp, lished at the close 01
the investigative jud~ment. During this time, we were called
to participate in the supper 01 the gospel, but then comes
the time whIm the redeemed are called to participate in the
marri!=lge supper 01 the Lamb, which takes place when they
are received into the New Jerusalem.
9. What can be unde"stood by the expression Uto her was
granted that she should be arrayed In fiJ?e linen? Rev. 19:8.
23
NO'I'B: :New lerusalem -is- not In need of this garment tor
it is a holy city, newly built, perfect and uninhabited. ' But
here this expression is applicable to the guests, the church
of God, who need this robe of justification. They must be
justified by the righteousness of Christ. that they may have
right 10 enter into the holy city and dwell therein. In refer-
ence to this we read:
"By the wedding garment in the parable is represented
the pure, spotless character which Christ's true followe~s
will possess. . To the church it i~ given 'that she should be
arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: 'not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing.' Rev. 19:8. The line linen, says
the Scripture, 'is the righteousness of saints.' Eph. 5:27. It
is the righteousness of Christ, His own unblemished char-
dcter, that through faith is imparted to all who receive Him
as their personal Saviour." Christ's' Object Lessons p. 310.
10. What blessing is pronounced upon those who heed the
gospel invitation? Rev. 19:9.
11. After this great vision was given him, what did Jobin
want to do? What was the advice given him? Rev. 19:10.
NOTE: The phrase "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of
prophecy" declares the manifestation of the Spirit of God
in His servants, the prophets, of whom John was one. The
BGIme expression "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of
prophecy" can be applied to the gift of prophecy manifested
at the beginning of the Advent Movemeni through Ellen G.
White.

THE END OF CMLIZATION

Questions
1. To what event Is John brought back in the vision, and
: what,is presented 'before him? Rev.. 19:11.
NOTE: "With verse 11 a new scene is introduced. We are
here' carried back to the second corning of Christ, this time
under the symbol of a wardor going forth to war, to meet
'the kings of the earth and their armies: and this w.ould be
th'~ 0111: ~;,ofer c:~arq:ct~r in whic~ to represent Him on such
a mission. . Damel and Revelalion p. 735.
24
2. . What further description is given. that this personality
might be clearly identified? Rev. 19:12.
3. What is said of his garments and what name is given
to Him? . Rev. 19:13.
4. What further scene was presented to John? Rev. 19:14·15.
NOTE: By this description of the army in heaven riding
upon horses', John is given a representation of the movement
of the angels of God and their destructive work, which will
be inflicted upon the rebellious world. In olden times, It was
customary for the nations to use horses in their battles. The
white horse shows that a royal family leads the army to meet
the kings of the earth. The Lord has called the nations to
choose the gospel message of faith for their strength, but
they rejected' it, and chose iron and steel instead. Therefore,
it is depicted here that the King of Kings allowed them to
follow thetr own way until finally He would rule them with
the weapons which they have chosen themselves.
5., What name and title did the leader of the heavenly army
bear? Rev. 19:16.
NOTE: "The battle of Armageddon is 'soon to be fought. He
on whose vesture is written the name, King of kings, and Lord
of lords, is soon to lead forth the armies "of heaven." Testi-
monies, VoL 6, p. 406.
6. W'hat announcement is now made by the angel standing
in !<he sun to the fowls of heavsm.? Rev. 19:17·18.
NOTE: Here the Lord presented' to John what He had pre-
pared for the fowls of "the ·earth. As it is their character to
feed upon flesh, they are now to have a "final supper." While
preparation is made in heaven for the reception of the saints
at the marriage supper, so the Lord has prepared for the
fowls a supper of the bodies of the mighty army which re-
belled against Him. This reperesentalion can be taken
literally, and also other prophets state that the bodies of the
wicked will be lying upon the earth unburied.
7. Against whom is the battle o'l rebellious ciV'ilization
directed? Rev. 19:19. •
8. What is stated about those followers of Christ who are
upon the earth during the time of this battle? Rev. 17:14•
.25
§. What wiil be tp.e end of the beast and false prophet
who brought the whole civilization into rebeUion agaijnsf
God? Rev. 19:20.
NOTE: The beast herein mentioned is not only a repre-
sehtdtioh of the pope as the head of the Catholic religion
and Christendom, but also a representation of this whole
system 6f religioh which will fall into disgrace before the
d~ceiv~d world, and which will be utterly destroyed by the
worla in its wrath for being deceived. The false prophet, the
tme who performs miracles, and is identified in Rev. 13:11-14
as p'rotestant America, will finally have the same end be-
cause he deceived the whole world to worship the beast and
receive his image.
10. What will happen to the rest of the wicked who have /n~
perished until this time? Rev. 19:21; II Thess. 1:6-10.
NOTE: "At the coming of Christ the wicked are blotted from
the face of the whole earth,-consumed with thG spirit of His
mouth, ahd destroyed by the brightness of His glory." Great
Controversy, p. 657.
11. What solemn wa.rning is to be brought to the lead~9'
meh of the nations today? Isaiah 34:1-4.

Lesson No. a-Sabbath. 'May 21, 1955.

THE MILLENNIUM
QUE1stions
1. After the destruction of the wicked. what did John see?
What was his mission? Rev. 20:1.2.
NOTE: "In like manner, when the work of atonement In the
hemenly sanctuary has been completed, then in the presence
of God and heavenly angels, and the host of the redeemed,
the sins of God's people will be placed upon Satan; he will
be declared guilty of all the evil which he has caused them
to commit. And as the scapegoat was sent away Into a
land not inhabited, so Satan will be banished to the desolate
earth. an uninhabited and dreary wilderness." G. C. p. 658.
"It ~annoi be supposed that the key and the chain are
literal; they are rather used merely as symbols of the power
and authority with which this angel is clothed on this oc-
<:asion for the accomplishment of his misson." D. & R. p. 742.
2. Where was Satan cast? Rev. 20:3.
NOTE: "That the expression 'bottomless pit' represents the
.earth in a state of confusion and darkness, Is evident from
other scriptures." Great Controversy, p. 658.
3. Why is it said that Satan is bound? Isa. 14:17-20.
NOTE: "Here is to be the home of Satan with r.:S· evil angels
for a thousand years. Limited to the earth, he will not have
access to other worlds, to tempt and annoy th)se who have
never fallen.. It is in this sense that he is bound: there are
none remaining upon whom he can exercise his power. He
ia wholly cut off from the work of deception and ruin which for
.so many centuries has been his sole delight." G. C. p. 660.
4. When is the millelU1ium to commence? What alU1ounce-
ment was made at the outpouring of the seventh plague?
Rev. 16:17.
NOTE: "Then commenced the jubilee. when thE" land should
rest. I saw the pious slave rise in victory and triumph, and
shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master
was in confusion and knew not what to do; for the wicked
<could not understand the words of the voice of God." .E. W. 286.
4. What law was given in Old Testametnt times through
Moses to demonstrate ',clearly the outlined plan of God
to bring the conflict between truth and error to an e/l1d?
Lev. 25:8-10.

S. With what words did Paul refer to the eternal purpose

of God' for a rest for His people? Heb. 4:3.4.

"NOTE: The Tewish people felt that they were "at rest" in
'Palestine, and that they 'had reached the real fufilment of
the purpose of God for His people. Paul revealed that the
.eternal purpose of God was not fulfilled with .heir entrance
:into Palestine, since they had not rested from transgression
·and sin. He revealed the everlasting rest meant by God
would be that rest in the kingdom of God, free from sin and
;sinners.
S. How did Peter reveal the set time of God to bring to a
. 27
completion the salvation of mankind? II Peter 8:8.
What explanation is given of this by the Spirit of Phophecy?

NOTE; "For six thousand years, Satan's work of rebellion

has 'made the earth to tremble.' He has 'made the world as
a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof.' And 'h8"
opened not the house of his' prisoners.' For six thousand
years his prison-house has received Gd's people and he
would have held them captive forever, but Christ h:Xs broken
his bonds, and set the prisoners free." Great Con'versy p. 659.
"For six thousand years the great controvelsy has been
in progress; the Son of God and His heavenly messengers
hcrve been in conflict with the power of the evil one, to warn,
enlighten, and save the children of men." G. C. p. 656.
"Satan's work of ruin is forever ended. For six thousand
years he has wrought his will, filling the earth with woe, and
causing grief throughout the universe. The whole creation
has groaned and travailed together in pain. Now God's
creatures are forever delivered from his presence and temp-
tations. 'The whols earth is at rest, and is quiet: they (the
righteous) break forth into singing.' Isa. 14:7." G. C. p. 673.
"The revelator foretells the banishment o! Satan, and
the condition of chaos and desolation to which the eerrth is'
to be reduced; and he declerres that this condition will exist
for a thousand yeerrs." Great Controversy p. 658.
God labored six days In creating the earth and Its In-
tlabitants, and rested the seventh day, likewise the activity
of this eerrth continues for 6,000 years and then it reshJ for
the last thousand years of its history.
7. What wordB of Christ to the c1iBciples are literally ful-
llilled at this time? MatL 19:28.
NOTE: "At this time the righteous rei'gn as kings and priests
unto God.... In union with Christ they judge the wicked
comparing their acts with the statute-book, the Bible, and
deciding every case according to the deeds done in the body.
Then the portion which the wicked must suffer is meted out,
according to their works; and It Is recorded against their
names in the book of death." Great Controversy, p. 661.

8. What does the apostle Johln write regarding the state-

of the wicked ones from all the ages during the mUlen-
nium? Rev. 20:4,5 (first part): Je4I": 4:23-2&
28
'NOTE: The millennium is not a time when a second chance
is given to the wicked, for there will be none there to preach
'righteousness to them, nor will Christ be in the sanctuary
to mediate for them. There will not even be· one single soul
of the wicked alive upon the earth, as the righteous saved
ones, including the 144,000 are in heaven.
That "judgment was given unto them" is to be under-
.stood that the'righteous received both position and authority
to judge the wicked.
9. To which class of people does John refer as having a
part in t'h e first' resulll'ection? Rev. 20:5 (last part),6.
NOTE: "Whatever may be said to the contrary, no language
could more plainly prove two resurrections. The first is a
resurrection of the righteous at the beginning of the thousand
years. The second is that of the wicked at the end of the
millennium." Daniel and Revelation, p. 747.
10. What does the Bibre teach about the setttng of time
for the coming of the Lord? What ctl:e we told regarding
"secret things?" Matt. 24:26: Deut. 29:29.
NOTE: Many in the past have' set dates for the coming of
Tesus, which was not in harmony with the Bible rule. God
has not entrusted man to set the day and hour ('f the coming
of the Lord. This is left entirely for the Father: to reveal to
the saints during the time' of Tacob's trouble.
"The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the
day and hour of Tesus' coming, and delivering the ever-
lasting covenant to His people.': G:r:eat Controversy, p. 640.

THE RESURRECTION OF THE WICKED

Questions
1. What event does John describe will take place after
the 1,000 years? Rev. 20:\ (first part) "5'
NOTE: "At the close of the thousand years, Christ again
.Teturns to the earth, He is accompanied by thE. host of the
.redeemed, and attended by a -retinue of angels. As He des-
<::ends in terrific majesty, He bids the wicked dead arise to

29
receive their doom. They come forth, a mighty host, number-
less as the sand's of the sea. What, a contrast to those who
are raised at the first resurrection I The righteous were
clothed with immortal youth and beauty. The wicked bear
the traces of disease and death." Great Controversy, p. 662.
:iI. What does Apostle Pet~ expla~n about the state of
Satan at present and during the millennium? 'n Peter 2:4.
3. After the resurrection of the wicked. what work does
Satan begin doing? Rev. 20:7. (first part)
NOTE: "Now Salan prepares for a last mighty struggle for
the supremacy. While deprived of his power, and cut off from
his work of deception, the prince of evil was miserable and
dejected; but as the wicked dead are raised and he sees
the vast multitudes upon his side, his hopes ~e>vive, and he
determines not to yield the great controversy." G. C. p. 663.
4. What did Christ say about the resurrecHO\n when He
was upon this earth? How did He show a separation
between the righteous and the wicked? John 5:28.29.
5. .....hat event takes place at the time when the wicked
are resurrected? -ta= 21 :2. --R4.V
NOTE: "As the New Jerusalem, in its dazzling splendor.
comes down out of heaven, It rest3 upon the place purified
and made ready to receive it, and Christ, with His people
and the angels, enters the holy city." Great Controversy p. 663.

6. How does the prophet Zechar, iah in the Old Testament

de.crib. this event? Zech. 14:4.5.
NOTE: "With Jesus at our head we all descended from the
city down to this earth, on a great and mighty mountain.
which could not bear fesus up, and it parted asunder, and
there was a mighty: plain. Then we looked up and saw the
great city, with twelve foundations and twelve gales on
each Side, and an angel at each gate. We all cried oul,
'The city, the great city, it's coming down from God out of
heaven: and it came and s'ettled on the place where we
stood." Early Writings, p. 17,18.
7. What will be the state of the wicked from the time of
their resurrecti01n until they are destroyed? Isa. 65:20.
30
NOTE: "As the wicked went into their graves, so they comet
forth, with the same enmity to Christ, and the Eame spirit of
rebellion." Great ContrdVersy, p. 662.
The state of the wicked is portrayed in prophetical vision
In Isaiah 65 where he speaks of the new heaven and earth.
Although the prophet could not clearly see to which event
the vision extends, yet he describes what takes place when
the wicked are resurrected and the new Jerusalem comes·
down. The young child living 100 years and BUll is a child
shows that there will be no change or develooment during
the time between the resurrection and their destruction. The'
old man will be accursed for during the period of 100 years;
he will make no improvement or development. Not one wilf
die in this period set by God, until due punishment comes
upon them.
8. 'What does the ;Lord permit SatClln to do now that th&
wicked are resul'Tected? Rev. 20:8.

NOTE: ,"They are to have no new probation in which to

remedy the defects of their past lives. Nothing would be
gained by this. A lifetime of transgres'sion has not softened
their hearts. A second probation, Were it given them would
be occupied as was the first, in evading the requirements-·
of God and exciting rebellion against Him...
"He will marshall alJ the armies of the host under his
banner, and through them endeavor to execute his plans.
The wicked are Satan's captives. In rejecting Christ they
have accepted the rule of the rebel lead'er. They are ready
to receive his suggestions and to do his bidding.... He
proposes to lead them against the camp of the saints, and
to take possessdon of the city of Go~. With fiendish exult-
ation he points to the unnumbered' millions who have been
raised from the dead, and declares that as their leader he
is well able' to overthrow the city, and regain his throne and
his kingdom:" Great Controversy, p. 662,663.

9. What word's of Christ will now have their fulfilment?

Matt. 25:31-34.

NOTE: The whole. human family is now alive, and is divided

into two classes by the two resurre'etions. The one class will
be within the city, and the other class will be scattered
outside throughout the earth.
31
10. What last desperate attempt will Satan. his angels and
'the wicked make? Verse 9, (first part)

NOTE: "At last the order to advance is given, cnd the count-
less host moves on,-an army such as w'as never summoned
by earthly conquerors such as the combined forces of all
ages since war bega~ on earth could never equal. Satan,
the mightiest of warriors, leads the van, and his angels
unite their forces for this final struggle. Kings and warriors
are in his train. and the multitudes follow in vast companies,
each under its appointed leader, With military precision, the
serried ranks advance over the earth's broken and uneven
surface to, the city of God, By command of Jesus, the gates
of the New Jerusalem are closed, and the armies of Satan
surround the city, and make ready for the onset." G, C. p, 664,

11. To whom now will all the inhabitants of the earth pay
homage? Zech. 14:9.

NOTE: "In the presence of the assembled inhabitants of

earth and heaven the final coronaton of the Son of God takes
place." Great Controversy, p, 666,

12. After Chirist receives recog;nHion as the supreme ruler,

what scene does John describe as taking place? Rev.
20:11-15.
NOTE: And now, invested with supreme majesty and power,
the King of kings pronounces sentence upon the rebels against
His government, and executes justice upon these who have
transgres~d His law and oppressed His people." G. C, p. 666.
Verses 11-15 follow in succession the events of Chapter
20:9 first part, before the last portion of the verse when fire
com'es down to devour,
13. W;hat final punishment now befalls Satan and his fol-
lowers, together with all wicked humanity? 'Vell'se ,..g.
J4ttst Jlad) 10... Il-> '-O! 9 (~fvJ' ) 10.
14. How do the prophets Zechariah and Malachi describe
this punishment of the wicked? Zech. 14:12: Mal. 4:1.

NOTE: "The wicked receive their recompese in the earth.

Th"y 'shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn
them up, saith thp. Lord of hosts.: Some are destroyed as in
32
a moment, while others suffer many days. All are punished
'according to their deeds.' The sins of the righteous having
been transferred to Satan, he is made to suffer not only for
his own rebellion, but for all the sins which he has caused
God's people to commit. His punishment is to be far greater
than that of those whom he had deceived. Jljter all have
perished who fell by his deceptions, he is still to live and
suffer on. In the cleansing flames the wicke<1 are at last
destroyed, root and branch,-Satan the root, his followers
the branches. The full penalty of the law has been visited;
the demands of justice have been met; and heaven and
earth,. beholding, declare the righteousness of Jehovah." Great
Controversy, p. 673.
The prophet Malachi gives a defnition of the words "for-
ever and ever" because he says that the fire will burn until
root and branches will be consumed. It was stated by
Jeremiah also that the doors of old Jerusalem would burn
forever and ever in the time of the Chaldeans, but this w~
not tru&-, since they merely burned until they WE-re consumed.
Thus also, the wicked will burn until their punishment will
be met. While the fire consumes sin and sinners, it also
Cleanses the earth, and it is restored to its original state.

THE NEW JERUSALEM

Questions
1. IWhat promise did the Lord give to the Israelites? Ex. 3:8.
NOTE: This promise of God was implanted in the minds
of the Iewish people who accepted the call made to go out
from Egypt.
2. What does apostlie Paul state about the features of this
promise? How far did the promise extend? Gal. 4:25.
3. How did he explain to the believers in the New dispen-
sation the reason for iailure of the Jews to obtain the
real rest? Heb. 4:1-4.
4. What Burer promises did Christ and apostle Paul give
to the New Testament beUevers? Luke 22:29-30: Gal. 4:2.6
NOrrE: Among' all the gifts and promises which God has
33
made for the salvation of mankind, the New Jerusalem was
also gi'ven, which will be the home of the saved. By ac-
ceptance of this promise by faith, we are' considered as
children of Jerusalem, and we long one day to return to our
mother, by the grace of God, which will be the eternal home
for the snved.
5. After describing the closing scenes of earth'j# sinful
history and the end of the great controversy, what new
era now begins? Rev. 21 :2,3.

'S. What blessed promise is given to those who today are

suffering for the sake of Christ and His truth? Rev. 21:4.

'7. What ,invitation does John now receive from one of the
seven. angels? Rev. 21 :9-10.
11. How does John describe the great city, which is the
capital of the new ecwth? Rev. ,21:11-13.
'9. Whaf does John mention about the foundation of the
New Jerusalem, and what is written thereon? Rev. 21 :14.

NOTE: John reveals that the new Jerusalem is not a Mosaic

promise 9iven in the Old Testament conditions, but is a New
'Testament promise, given to the converted Jews and Christ-
ians. Therefore the names of the twelve disciples who are
Jews by nature' but true Israelites and Christians by spirit.
are written on the foundations. The JeWish dispensation is
honored by having the names 01 the twelve tribes of Israel
written upon the gates, meaning that we are all descendents
of Abraham,
10. iWhat further description does John give of the foundation
and gates of the city? Rev. 21:15·21.

NOTE: It is clearly stated to John that the circumference oi

the city is 12,000 furlongs. Taking eight furlongs per mile,
we find that the city measures 1,500 miles, each stde 375
miles in length. In reference to the wall about Jerusalem,
many ideas are given about it. but none are certain as to
its exact measurement. The following quotation gives us
<In idea of the magnitude of the walls:
"Jesus and all the angelic host and all the saints, with
the glittering crowns upon their heads, ascend to the top of
34
the wall of the city." Early Writings, p. 293.
It can therefore be understood that the height of the wall
will be in proportion to the length and breadth of the city.
It is impossible' for the human mind to fully describe the
~lory of the new city Terusalem, built by God the Father.
I Cor. 2:9.
11. What did John notice was not within the city?
NOTE: It is tme that the temple is not in the city, nor is it
necessary, for it is no longer needed. God and the Lamb
are the objects of glory and honor. The New Terusalem rests
upon the mount of Olives and the temple is upon Mo.unt
Zion, as the following stat~ment reads:
"Mount Zion was just before us, and on the mount was a
glorious temple, and about it were other mountains, on which
grew rnses and lilies." Early Writings P. 19.
12. What does John explain about the light of the city?
Rev. 21 :23. What comment is given by the Old Testa-
ment prophet? Isa. 30:26.
NOTE: The presence of God and Christ and their glory will
so far supercede the perfect liqht of the sun, that it will not
be needed in the city.
1~ What further d'escdp'ion does the apostle John giV&
about the everlasting life of the redeemed? Rev. 21:24-27.

35
Writings, p, 34.
3. How does the prophet Jeremiah describe the condition
~f the earth after the wrath of God is poured out? Jer.

and a .oyal diadem in the hand of thy God.' 'Her light was
like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone,
clear as crystal.' "The nations· of them which are saved
shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do
bring their glory and honor into it.' Saith the Lord, 'I will
rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people.' 'The tabernacle
of God' is with men, and' He will dwell with them, and they
36
shall be His people, and God himself shall be with them,
and be their God.''' Great Controversy, p. 676.
12. What will" the redeemed do from one new moon to an-
other and from one sabbath to another? Isa. 66:23.
NOTE: "'0 tow'er of the flock, the stronghold of the daughter
of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion.'
The time has come, to which holy men have looked with
longing since the flaming sword barred the first paIr from
Eden,-the time for "the redemption of the purchased pos-
session.' The earth originally given to man as his kingdom,
betrayed by him into the hands of Satan; and so long held
by the mighty foe, has been brought' back by the great plan
of redemption. All that was lost by sin has been restored.
'Thus saith the Lord. . . . that formed the earth and made
it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He
for-med it to be inhabited.' God's original purpose in the
creation of the earth is fulfilled as it is made the eternal
abode of the redeemed. 'The righteous shall inherit the
land, and dwell therein forever.''' Great Controversy, p. 674.

THE EVERLASTING DOMINION

Questions
1. What particular thing drew the attention of apostle John
as he conllinued to describe the New City? Rev. 22:1.
2. Wlhat desca?ption was given of the ,iver by the prophet
Ezekiel and from where d'oes it spring forth? Eze. 47:1.
NOTE: John states that the water proceeds from out of the
throne, and Ezekiel writes that it proceeds from the house
of the Lord, and out of ,the sanctuary (see verse 12).
3. Where is the tree of life planted, about which we hear
so much? Rev. 22:2.
4. What testimony was given by the prophet Ezekiel re-
garding the tree of lif~? Ezekiel 47:12.
5. How is it that Johl1; sees the tree of life in heaven, when
we read in Genesis that it was originally in the Garden
of Eden upon the earth?
37
NOTE: "After the entrance of sin, the heavenly Husbandman
-transplanted the treQ of life to the paradise above; but its
branches hang over the wall to the lower world. Through
1he redemption purchased by the blood of Christ, we may
still eat of its life-giving fruit." Testimonies, Vol. 8, p. 288.
"When the tide of iniquity overspread the world, and the
wickedness of men determined their destruction by a flood
.of w'aters, the hand that had planted Eden withdrew it from
the earth. But in the final restitution when there shall be
'a new heaven and a new earth,f it is to be restored more
gloriously adorned than at the beginning." Patriarch and
Prophets, p. 62.

6. What power was invested by the Creator in this tree

of life?
NOTE: "The fruit of the tree of life in the garden of Eden
possessed supernatural virtue. To eat of it was to live forever.
1ts fruit was the antidote of death. Its leaves were for the
:sustaining of life and immortality. But through man's dis-
.obedience, death entered the world. Adam ate of the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil, the fruit of which he had
been forbidden to touch. His transgression opened the flood-
gates of w'oe upon our race.'" Testimonies, Vol. 8, p. 288.

7. What should be understood by "the leaf thereof for

medicine:' and "the leaves of the tree were for the heal-
ing of the nation.su~ when there will not be any sickness
or shadow of death in heaven?

NOTE: "We all are to feast upon the word of God. The re-
lation of the word to the believer is a vital matter. Appro-
priating the word to our spiritual necessities is the healing
of the nations. Study' the word, anel: practice the word, for it
:is your life." Counsels on Sabbath School Work, p. 44.
"So with all the promises of God's word. In them He
is speaking to us individually, speaking as directly as if
"We could listen to His voice. It is in these promises that
'Christ communicates to us His grace and power. They are
leaves from that tree which; is 'for the healing of the nations."
Ministry of Healing, p. 122.
A similar explanation is given by Zechariah 4, in which
1he Old and New Testaments' are compared to the two olive
'trees from which flows the oil into the bowls of the candle-
38
stick with seven branches in the sanctuary.
"In the beginning, man was created in the likeness of
God: not only in character, but in form and feature. Sin de-
faced and almost obliterated the divine image; but Christ
carne to restbre that which had been lost. He will ch=ge
our vile bodies, and fashion them like unto His glorious body.
The mortal, corruptible torm. devoid of comeliness, once
polluted with sin, beco!Jles perfect; beautiful, =d immortal.
All blemishes and deformities are left in the grave. Re-
:stored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed
will 'grow up' to the full stature of the race in its primeval
glory. The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be
removed, and Christ's faithful ones' will .appear 'in the beauty
of the Lord our God: in mind and soul and body reflecting
the peifect image of their Lord. Oh wonderful redemption'
long talked of, long hoped for, conte~plated with eager an-
ticipation, but never fully understood." G. C. p. 645.
:8. Why is it thatl the Lord will not redeem a wicked person?
Isa. 26:10.
NOTE: "'They are the children of the wicked one, who was
the first rebel against God.'s law. To admit them into heaven
would aiJain bring in the elements of discord and rebeillon,
and imperil the w'ell-being of the universe. No man who wi!-
1ully disregardS one principle of the law shall enter the king-
- .dom of heaven." Desire of Ages. p. 309.
9. Where is the throne of the Lord and the Lamb? Rev.
22:3: Eze. 48:35.
10. What close relationship between the Lord and His re-
deemed ones will exist? Rev. 22:4: J John ,3:2: J Cor.
13:12.
NOTE: "The true object of education is to 'restere the image
of God in the soul. In the beginning, God created man in
his own likeness. He endowed him with noble qualities.
His mind was w'ell balanced, and all the powers of his being
were harmonious. But the lall of its effects have perverted
these gilts. Sin has marred and well-nigh obliterated the
image of God in man. It was to reatore this that the pl=
of salvation was devised, and a life of probation was gr='ted
to man. To bring him back to the perfection in which he
was first created, is the great object of lile,-the object that
39
underlies every other." Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 595.
II. What does John again repeat in regard to the lightin!1'
of' the city and the- division 01 day and night? Rev. 22:5.
12. What assurance is given by the Lord to all who read
this book?, Roev. 22:6. 6
