9. How did Sister White see the fulfilment of' this
prophecy?
ANSWER: "I was shown the inhabitants of the earth
in the utmost confusion. War, bloodshed. privation, want,
famine, and pestilence were abroad in the land. As these
things surrounded God's people, they began to press to-
gether, and to cast aside their little difficulties. Self-
dignity no longer controlled them; deep humility took its
place. Suffering, perplexity, and privation caused reason
to resume its thron€, and the passionate and unreasonable
man became sane, and acted with discretion and wisdom.
"My attention was then called from the scene. There
seemed to be a little time of peace. Once more. the inhabi-
tants of the earth were presented before me; and again
everything was in the utmost confusion. Strife, war, and
bloodshed, with famine and pestilence, raged everywhere.
Other nations were engaged in this war and confusion.
War caused famine. Want and bloodshed caused pestilence.
And then men's hearts failed them for fear, 'and for look··

5. Is it possible for Satan to read our thoughts?
ANSWER: "We can not always hinder the thoughts

not permitted to read the thoughts of men, but he is a keen
observer, and' he marks the words and actions. and skil-
fully adapts his temptations accordingly. If all would
1abor to repress sinful thoughts and feelings, giving them

for he would not know how to prepare his specious tempta-
tions to meet their cases."-"Historical Sketches," p. 146.
6. Do the angels of God know our thoughts?

NOTE: The following testimony will explain the sin
against the Holy Ghost. "Brother P., you ask if you have
committed the sin which has no forgiveness in this life or'
in the life to come. I answer, I do not see the slightest
evidence that this is the case. What constitutes the sin
against the Holy Ghost?-It is wilfully attributing to-
Satan the work of the Holy Spirit. For example, sup_·
pose that one is a witness of the special work 0'1 the Spirit
of God. He has convincing evidence the work is in har-
mon with the Scd tures and the SpIrit witnesses with his.
spirIt t at It is of Go. Afterward, however, he falls under
temptation; ride, self-sufficiency, or some other evil trait,
controls him; and reJectIng all the evidence of its divine'
character, he declares that that whIch he had before ac-
knowledged to be the power of the Holy Spirit was the
power of Satan. It is through the medium of His Spirit
that God works upon the human heart; and when men wil-·
lingly reject the Spirit, and declare it to be from Satan,
they cut off the channel by which God can communicate
with them."-VoI. 5, p. 634.
