CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

Education is one of the greatest inheritance that numerous children

can only acquire from their families. It serves as a powerful weapon in
reaching the student’s dreams and goals in life. The world is constantly
changing and the education system goes along with it. Last May 15, 2013,
the former President Benigno Aquino III signed the Republic Act 10533 or
known as Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 that intends to widen the
10-year basic education cycle to 12 years. The Department of Education
(DepEd) is the one who implements and manages the K-12 education
from 10 years of Basic Education − six years in Elementary and four years
for High School−from 1945 to 2011, the implementation of the K to 12
program of DepEd and subsequent ratification of the Enhanced Basic
Education Act of 2013 has become the indication for Basic Education to
become twelve years in the country. Six years for Elementary, four years
for Junior High School and two years for Senior High School (SHS), for
the students whose age range five to seventeen years old. According to
DepEd, this change in the education program in the Philippines has
undergone a thorough study.

It is said that one of the benefits it brings is the opportunity for students
to rely on different areas of specialization. The program also aims to
provide enough time for students to better learn and improve the concepts
and skills required for college as well as employment and
entrepreneurship. This program aims to develop every ability and
characteristics of students based on their track and strand. Under this
education system, there are four tracks, Academic, Arts and Design,
Sports, and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL). The Academic track is
for students with a plan to pursue college studies and consists of four
strands, Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM), Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) , Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS) and General Academic Strand (GAS) for
students who have doubts about the track. Arts and Design are intended
for students who wish to improve their interests in various fields related to
design, visual and media arts, performances and other forms of art. The
Sports track is for students who want to cultivate their passion for physical
activities. Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) is for students whose
goal is to work immediately. There are four strands under it, Agri-Fishery
Arts, Home Economics, Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) and Industrial Arts.

The K to 12 program is a government-sponsored solution for young

people to be prepared to keep pace not in the country only but also
throughout the world. Whether they pursue their college education or
work, they immediately qualify as one of the purposes of the program. It is
also a desire to raise the standards and quality of education in the
Philippines. In its rapid implementation, many graduates of tenth grade still
find it hard to decide which track and strand they will take in Senior High
School. Just like the students in San Jose National High School.

This research aims to determine the factors affecting the decision of

tenth-grade students in choosing their track and strand for Senior High
School. This research also explains the most primary things they consider
in choosing a track and strand. It can reveal if it is the Personality,
Influence of people around (peer), and Job opportunities mostly put up
first by the students before they decide what course to take.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Philippines is one of the three remaining countries that still have
the 10-year curriculum alongside with Djibouti and Angola until 2013.
Since 1945, the country uses this type of education system. From a 10-
year curriculum, Philippines embrace change in the said matter because
of the implementation of the K to 12 program last May 2013.

Although a lot of people were against the idea of the new system, they
still continue the implementation of it. Some people were arguing that it
should be postponed because the government is not ready to handle the
said program. From the lack of schools and universities offering Senior
High School, the deficient facilities and insufficiency of skilled teachers to
properly educate the students, they suggested to postponed it considering
the students’ welfare.

Choosing track and strand can have consequences. The results of

what you have chosen can either help you or hinder you in the future. In
choosing track and strand for Senior High School, many Grade 10
students are still confused and undecided on what is the most suited track
and strand for them.

In the K-12 Conference happened last January 2017, Department of

Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones said that the implementation
of the new curriculum was more than just keeping up with our regional
neighbors or with the global community. “We are doing K-12 for ourselves
and for Philippine education. We are doing this to be able to compete in
our own country so that we can equip our learners with appropriate skills,
creativity, and intelligence to cope with the changing world,” Briones said.
 There are a lot of factors that the students consider in deciding on
what track and strand they should take. According to Boyer (1987), “in
taking a course, one of life’s major decision is being made. A lot of time,
money, and effort will be involved. The shape and excellence of the
student’s life may rest on the result.”

Parents have been seen as the most influential people in shaping the
aspirations of the students because they provide the opportunities,
encouragement, and support for their children (Garg et al., 2002). For
students who have aspirations and expectations for their future, they
should have perseverance and determination in pursuing their studies.

The people surrounding the students can also influence their decision.
In particular, peer can be one of their many considerations before
selecting their courses due to wanting acceptance and wanting to
experience multiple activities together.

A student should choose a course which he or she will be love

studying throughout his or her college years, and decision-making should
take part and should not take for granted. The decision of which course to
take is one of the farthest decisions for a student especially those who are
graduating High school students. Moreover, Students should consider if
their dream is realistic. They should reality check if they afford the tuition
and other expenses of their chosen career because if not, it can lead to
confusion and other difficulties.

Students are having a hard time deciding what to choose their track
and strand for Senior High School because according to Cynthia Measom,
a writer, and an editor, they are afraid of failure. They fear that they won't
be good at it. Furthermore, they are still unaware of skills they possess,
values and what poke their interests.

Students’ career success can attain if proper guidance is there in

choosing the right course that suited to every students’ personality, ability,
and intellect.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

With the change in the education system today, this study helps the
following people and institutions to further expand their knowledge on the
new program implemented by the government and increase everyone's
understanding regarding the said matter. This study is helpful to the
following:

To Students

This study might be helpful for the students because they have the
opportunity to learn something new in terms of the K to 12 program. They
will become more prepared because of the information that they will get
and can possibly help them when they reach Senior High School. For
those students who are in grade 10 level, this study is a great helping
hand for them to have knowledge in terms of the basis in choosing the
right track and strand for themselves.

To Teachers

This study is important to every teacher in such a way that they will
gain new knowledge when it comes to their students and teach them
conveniently with new strategies that will work to every student. They will
understand how the students come up to their decision why they choose
that certain strand. Furthermore, it can also help them to be motivated to
have a stronger relationship between them and the students.

To Parents

This research can be helpful to all the parents because, in this study, their
mind will be up for new ideas on how the decision-making of their children
works in choosing track and strand in Senior High School. And also, they
will understand the things that they should provide for their children to help
them end up in the right track and strand for their better future ahead.

Schools and Universities

This study is also important to every institution such as schools and
universities since the study can answer the most chosen track and strand
by the students in 10th grade that can serve as their basis on what track
and strand they should obtain at their school and university. They will also
know what things they need to prepare, what facilities they need to
provide that can persuade students to enroll at their school and the
different perspectives of students in choosing track and strand in Senior
High School.

Future Researchers
This research is ready for innovation, development, and revision of
other researchers.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study focuses on the perceptions of the students in 10th grade

and will answer a survey prepared by the researchers about the things
they are considering in selecting a track and strand in Senior High School.
It limits the study to a secondary school which is San Jose National High
School. This study covers the acquisition of views and other topics related.
The study was further limited by taking 15 respondents using convenience
sampling from the students in the 10th grade of San Jose National High
School.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study seeks to investigate the perception of Grade 10 students in
choosing their track and strand in Senior High School and it intends to
answer the following:

1. What are the perceptions of the students in choosing their track and
strand when it comes to:

A. Personality

B. Influence of people around (peer)

C. Job Opportunities

2. Is the perceptions of students in choosing their course relevant?

3. What are the recommendations of the students to their co-students who
are struggling in choosing track and strand in Senior High School?
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Perception - a belief or opinion, often held by many people and based

on how things seem.

- the quality of being aware of things through the physical

senses, especially sight.

K to 12 Program - Program of the government that adds two years in

secondary education. It aims to make the students be prepared to
opportunities in and out of the country.

Senior High School - This is the term used for schools and universities
offering education for students who are in eleventh and twelve years of
High School.

Track - is a concept covered by the DepEd K-12 program where it will

serve as an option by the students and later on choose one to pursue in
Senior High School. There are three tracks that can be selected by Senior
High School students, these are Academic, Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood, Sports, and Arts.

Strand - is a concept covered by the DepEd K-12 program where it will

serve as an option by the students and later on choose one to pursue in
Senior High School. The strand is the specialization covered by a track.
Examples of strands under Academic Strand:

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

ABM - Accountancy, Business and Management

HUMSS - Humanities and Social Sciences

GAS - General Academic Strand

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

The implementation of the K to 12 Program, many Grade 10 students

are still confused and having a hard time choosing their course. In
choosing a track and strand is one of the hardest decision that they will
encounter in their lives. The decision that they're going to make has a
huge impact because their future depends on it. The following studies and
literature are the things that support the research:

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to the theory of the Psychologist, John Holland (1994), he

proposed that as an individual you can nurture yourself and find happiness
if your profession is aligned to your personality. He also stated that people
have the possibility to choose their own career based on their
characteristics. He suggests that if an individual has a job that is aligned to
his or her characteristics, they will feel genuine happiness and there is a
high possibility of success. It is also known as Holland Codes or RIASEC.
Based on this theory, each person has six kinds of personality: Realistic,
Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional.

Realistic - Refers to physical activities that require skill, strength, and

coordination. Examples of professions include are architects, farmers, and
engineers.
Investigative - Preferably work on things related to theory and information.
Their qualities mostly revolve on thinking, organizing, and understanding.
Examples include professors and lawyers.

Artistic - Someone who prefers creativity, originality, and non-systematic

activity that allows creative expression. Examples include musicians and
artists.

Social - Choices of activities related to helping, healing, or improving

others. Examples include teachers, doctors, and counselors.

Enterprising - Chooses the environment with competition, leadership,

influence, and sales. For example, company workers.

Conventional - Preferably work in detail and follow the given instructions to

him. They are quiet, careful, responsible and organize. These include
accountants and managers.

Frank Parsons also known as the "Father of Career Counseling”,

developed the idea that your chosen career must be aligned to your
talents, skills, and personality as an individual. Relatedly, he proposed that
as an individual your job must suit your ability, for them to become
productive. In his book titled "Choosing a Vocation", Parsons said that
personal advice is extremely important in choosing a career.

Another theory proposed by Albert Bandura (1977), a professor in a

well-known University of Stanford in California. His Social Cognitive
Theory is a study based on the ideas that the people learn through
observation to others and the process on how people think is very
significant in understanding their personality. It encompasses attention,
memory, and motivation. You have to pay attention to learn new
knowledge. You must maintain and remember what caught your attention.
It should remain and always be ready to remember what you give your
attention to.

John Krumboltz (1983) a popular American-based theorist in choosing

a career and psychologist. Krumboltz's Social Learning Theory shows how
an individual makes a decision about choosing a career that also gives
importance to behavior and cognition. In relation to it, there are four main
factors to understand why people choose the work they do as well as
other job-related decisions.

Genetic Endowment

The aspects an individual inherited rather than learned. Some people

are born with special skills in art, writing, music and more.

Environmental Conditions and Events

The factors that are beyond the control of individual: social, cultural,
political, and economics.

Social Factors

Social changes have a huge impact on career choices.

Educational Conditions

Having education is influenced by both social and personal factors.

The school system is also important and the effect of teachers in choosing
a career.

Occupational Conditions
 Least control to the number of work opportunities.

Learning Experiences

Helped: Work in the environment and make a difference.

Connects: Connections to the cognitive and emotional side.

Vicarious: A type of connective study.

Task approach skills

Standards, work habits, and mindset.

According to Pafili and Mylonakis (2011), the selection of course by

the students are influenced by some factors from the social environment,
primarily parents as an immediate family that plays an active role in
choosing the right education for their children.

Laguador (2013), as a sign of respect to Filipino parents and cultures,

children have to consult their parents or elders first because they will be
the supporters for the financial needs of college entry.

Pafili and Mylonakis (2011) said that when it comes to the right
decision of what profession to take, students can properly utilize their skills
and knowledge to gain a proper experience that can contribute to their
development as individual and social development.

Taylor (2004) also shared that parental support and encouragement

are one of the factors that influence the selection of course. Children might
choose what their parents want so that they can make them happy.
 According to Dr. Casey (2008), friends have a huge influence on the
the decision-making of young people.

According to Laitsch (2006), friends can influence the behavior of a

student in a negative or positive way.

According to Frenzel, Goets, Pekrun, and Watt (2010), friends may

influence an individual in choosing a career. Individual interests may be
affected by friends in the desire to be with them in the pursuit of goals or in
a course. The role of classmates is also crucial to the success of a
student.

According to Dr. Melissa Venable (2011), an American-based writer,

events happening in life can affect course choices and can be used by
students to educate their chosen course. Changes in the economy and
employment opportunities are also one of the factors that can influence
the choice of students.

Based on personal observations of Steve Pavlina (2007), an American-

based author, if a person made a mistake, just like picking a career, the
only thing to do is to continue and forgive himself. They should not stay in
the situation but learn from it and gradually, their decision-making will be
improved. Therefore, they have difficulty deciding because they are afraid
of failure.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Peralta, Andaya, and Tuguinayo Jr. (2014), Everything in

this world must think wisely. Even the person who does not choose or
decides or interferes with something or situation still chooses an action:
the one who will not choose or the one who will not interfere at all.
Because a person is free and has the capacity to choose, he/she is
expected to be responsible for the choice he/she chose and be happy for
it whatever the outcome may be.

Bautista (1968), stated that the biggest barrier to students performing

their own career choice decision was the lack of profound knowledge in
the selected career. In addition, depth knowledge is required to make a
proper and appropriate career. He further said that elementary school
provides the foundation for formal education. As students go to secondary
school, they begin to feel exactly what course they really wanted.

Castillo (1963) mentions that it is important to guide Junior High

School students because this is the stage where they are building their
abilities and decisions.

According to Dizon and Ramirez (2014), students who have graduated

Junior High School have no concrete decision on where they are going to
study or what their possible track and strand in Senior High School. They
plan to enter the two years of secondary education without a clear idea of
what course they will take.

According to former education secretary Jesli Lapus, it is not necessary

to follow the result of National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE), it
will greatly help the students to provide them a bunch of options and help
them filter and later on end up with the most suited course for them.

To help students make good decisions on their careers and help them
solve problems of unemployed jobs and practices, the Department of
Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Region VI has conducted an orientation
titled "Career Guide for High School Students and Employment Guide for
College Students and Jobseekers". Labor and Employment Secretary
Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said the importance of launching orientations
at various secondary schools across the country.

Based on Cruz's article (2018), take every opportunity to learn. Ask

your family, friends, colleagues, even your former teachers what strand
they consider suitable for you. Sometimes, this is a process to discover
yourselves.

According to an article published by Isaiah Emmanuel Suguitan (2018),

When choosing such things as choosing strands, always consider what
your heart dictates. Also, be true to yourself if you really love what you are
doing. It's also worth considering your hobbies, skills, and talent as a
course selection.

FOREIGN STUDY

According to the research of Darren Fizer (2013), titled "Factors

Affecting Career Choices of College Students Enrolled in Agriculture", the
most influential to the participants are their families followed by the
personality.

In the research conducted by Kimberli Burdett (2013), entitled "How

Students Choose a College: Understanding the Role of Internet-Based
Resources in the College Choice Process" appears to be the most
important factor they are considering is their families. Some students have
had a good deal, support, and family influence. Others have the first family
member to attend college, and others need to know it on their own.

Based on the research of Ruth Kallio (1995), titled "Factors Influencing

the College Choice Decisions of Graduate Students", the main
consideration of study participants is the financial need. Next is the
reputation of the school they will attend.

Regarding to the research conducted by Jill Edmonds (2012), entitled

"Factors Influencing Choice of College Major: What Really Makes a
Difference?", Subject matter interest is their primary consideration and
second is the financial cost of the school.

LOCAL STUDY

According to Vizarra's research (2015) titled "Factors Affecting

Selecting ABM Courses of Students at Our Lady of Fatima University",
shows that the students often bases his or her chosen course to personal
interest.

Based on the research by Vitug (2017) titled "An Inquiry to the

Influence of Choosing the Strands among the Students", the most
important thing that a student consider in choosing a track is their personal
preference because for them when they choose a track they are interested
in, they will perform better to achieve a good performance in the field of
their choice.

Based on the study by Renan Limjuco (2018) titled "Career Choice of

Students: Basis for Curricular Offering of Senior High Schools in Region
XI", the main reason of the participants of the study in choosing their
career is their different personalities.

Regarding to the research conducted by Valenzuela (2018), a student

of the University of the Philippines, titled "Should I Stay Or Should I Go? A
Study on the Impact of K-12 on the Perspectives and Future Plans of
Grade 12 Students upon Graduation from Senior High in Selected Schools
in Cubao, Quezon City ", had caused job demand to be the basis of the
participants of the study in choosing a course.

According to Martin's research (2010), a registered psychometric,

entitled "The Factors that Affect Students' Decision in Choosing their
College Courses" most students, are motivating themselves to take a
course through their trust in themselves and their family members as it is r
really possible to achieve it. Furthermore, this trust is an inspiration as
they build the foundation of their future. Hence, family members' advice
has been helpful for participants to take their course.

SYNTHESIS

The following literature and studies are the ones who supported this
study. According to the theory of John Holland, an individual can truly be
happy when he or she chooses a career that is aligned to his or her
personality. He suggested that there are six personalities. Suguitan also
suggests choosing what you really want and the importance of personality
as a basis. Frank Parsons, “Father of Career Counseling”, mentioned that
in choosing a course, it should be connected to your talents, skills, and
personality. Albert Bandura asserts that observation is needed to acquire
new knowledge. John Krumboltz also studied how individuals decide that
focuses on action and cognition. Also, Pafili and Mylonakis, Taylor,
Laguador believed that as an immediate people in your life, the family is
one of the factors affecting the choice of the students, Pafili and Mylonakis
further studied on how skills and knowledge serve as one of the factors
that can shape individuals. Frenzel, Goets, Pekrun and Wat, Dr. Casey,
and Laitsch further explained how friends affect the choice of course of the
students. Venable argues how the current happenings serve as a factor.
Bautista and Castillo explained how students should have guidance
starting high school regarding the appropriate selecting of course. In the
study of Cruz, family, peers, and colleagues tend to be a great factor that
many students consider. The result of the individual study by Fizer and
Martin and Burdett, the family appears to be influential. Kallio’s and
Edmonds’ study resulted that financial needs are also being considered.
Vizarra, Vitug, and Limjuco individual study appears to have the same
result which is the decision came from themselves analyzing their
personality. Valenzuela’s study answer that in-demand jobs can also be
the most influential to students.
 Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents Research Design, Sampling Technique,

Research Instrument, and Data Gathering Procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In this study, researchers applied Descriptive Design to find out the

views and opinions of respondents about the aforementioned goals and
problems. The focus of this research is the productivity to gather
information, comment and the attitudes needed from the respondents.

The type of research used is Qualitative because it aims to answer the

perceptions of students in tenth grade regarding the factors that they
primary considered and not held as extremely important to their track and
strand when they reach Senior High School.

POPULATION AND SAMPLE TECHNIQUE

In this research, the researchers choose the convenience sampling by

which researchers can identify the different views of students in tenth
grade of San Jose National High School and what factors they considered
and not considered before choosing their track and strand. This research
use 15 respondents to answer the prepared survey questionnaire
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

In this study, the researchers will execute their research by giving a

piece of questions by the means of survey questionnaire for the
respondents. The survey questionnaire was prepared by the researchers
that aim to gather data to know what are the perception of the students in
choosing their course when they turn Senior High School.

The researchers will also conduct activities to gather reliable information

on different books and some information from the internet.

DATA GATHERING PROCESS

These are the following steps that researchers used to make this study
possible:

1. When the researchers finished their research instrument which is a

survey questionnaire, they are now ready to give it to their respondents for
them to answer it.

2. After this, they went to the place where their 15 respondents are located
for them to answer the given survey questionnaire.

3. Before the researchers gave the survey questionnaire to the

respondents, they explained the instruction first up to the last and also
answer the respondents' questions when they can't understand something
related to the questionnaires and they want to clarify it.

4. The survey takes two days to finished, the researchers do it every

dismissal of their class but also, researchers encountered some difficulties
because of the different dismissal time of the researchers and their
respondents.
5. After that, the researchers collected all the information and they are
going to analyze, explained and interpret it.

considered the primary factor that most influence you before choosing
your course? Explain.

Student 1: “This is how to make importance for something you want or

something that is important to your life”.

Student 2: “Because family is the one that always at my side in every

problem that I face in life and I know that until the end they are always with
me”.

Student 3: “Because I found everything in my family because of them I

know what true love is and they are the one who helps me to make my
dreams come true”.

Student 4: “In my opinion, my family knows what is best for me”.

Student 5: “Because all of us have different talents and attitude”.

Student 6: “Talent and Interest because I will lose interest in studying if I
don't like the strand I chose ”.

Student 7: “Family because they are important to me”.

Student 8: “Because Family is the most important”.

Student 9: “Through this, you will identify what strand you really love the
most. Because if you are not interested in that strand you will not enjoy the
strand or the course you’re going to choose”.

Student 10: “Family because they are one of the reasons why I'm living in
this world”.

Student 11: “Because it is easy for me to get and use the track that I have
chosen if it is connected to my talent or interest”.

Student 12: “Talent/Interest are the most important because if you like
what you are doing you will not suffer”.

Student 13: “It’s because they are the reason for all that I have right now
they are the reason why I still fighting”.

Student 14: “Because this is what I need to be a successful one. A family

who support and make discipline to me”.

Student 15: “Family because family is the one who bold my personality
and I do believe that family is the basic unit of the society”.
 Base on the analyzation of the researchers, Family is the most primary
factor that Students consider before choosing their courses in Senior High
school.

The following studies of Pafili at Mylonakis (2011) prove the result of

the first question. According to Pafili and Mylonakis (2011), the selection
of course by the students are influenced by some factors from the social
environment, primarily parents as an immediate family that plays an active
role in choosing the right education for their children.

Laguador (2013), as a sign of respect to Filipino parents and cultures,

children have to consult their parents or elders first because they will be
the supporters for the financial needs of college entry.

Taylor (2004) also shared that parental support and encouragement

are one of the factors that influence the selection of course. Children might
choose what their parents want so that they can make them happy.

The family appears to be related to the factors that students in tenth

grade considered before selecting a track and strand in Senior High
School because it is in the Filipino culture to listen to the parents or elders'
advice. Additionally, they also serve as the basis since they are always
there to support and guide the students.

Student 1: “ It is least important”.

Student 2: “Because friends, they will leave you behind and be lost in your
life and if they are true, I have trust in them that's why I put them last”.

Student 3: “Because it’s easy to find a job if you have the right decision
you will achieve this with the help of God”.

Student 4: “Because I don't really need the opinion of my friends and it

doesn't match mine”.

Student 5: “Because it helps us with our self”.

Student 6: “Friends because you don't have the same hobby”.

Student 7: “Because I don't have any interest in others”.

Student 8: “Because it’s not really important for me”.

Student 9: “They can't help me in choosing a strand”.

Student 10: “Because for me, in-demand job can wait”.

Student 11: “Because we don't have the same choice of track”.

Student 12: “Friends, because you are the only one that has the right to
choose the strand for yourself”.

Student 13: “This is just my hobby and I rarely doing it so I didn't pay much
attention to it”.

Student 14: “If I have a talent/interest, it will be easy for me to find an in-
demand work”.
Student 15: “For me, as long as you're enjoying your interest that is
enough. You don't need an in-demand job if you’re not enjoying it”.

student in a negative or positive way.

According to Frenzel, Goets, Pekrun, and Watt (2010), friends may

influence an individual in choosing a career. Individual interests may be
affected by friends in the desire to be with them in the pursuit of goals or in
a course. The role of classmates is also crucial to the success of a
student.

This study shows that Friends is not mostly considered by the students
in choosing their courses in Senior High school for the reason that they
trust their parents more than their friends. Furthermore, they have different
fields that are based on their hobbies, interests, and talents that they want
to pursue.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM 3: What are the recommendations of

the students to their co-students who are struggling in choosing track and
strand in Senior High School?
3. What is your advice to your co-students who still find it hard to choose
the right track and strand in Senior High School?

Student 1: "You should have a final decision for your track and strand so
at the end you'll not regret anything."

Student 2: "Assess yourself. You must consider your passion than your
strength because if you want to achieve your dreams you will make a way
to pursue it. Then you can turn your weakness into a strength."

Student 3: "You must first know what you really are and what you really
want."

Student 4: "They must know what is their interest before choosing a

strand."

Student 5: "Choose the strand that is aligned to your talent and the strand
that comes from your heart."

Student 6: "Choose what you want or choose the strand that suits you.
Think carefully."

Student 7: "You must follow your desired course in order for you to choose
the compatible strand."

Student 8: "You must choose the strand you really like so you will not
waste so much money."

Student 9: "You must know the course you really like. Don't listen what
others want you to be."

Student 10: "Choose what you want. But it depends if you are good
enough to the strand you chose."
Student 11: "Think carefully and choose the strand that you really like."

Student 12: "Follow what you desire and always pray for the sake of what
strand is for you”.

Student 13: "Always think before doing something. Ask advice or help
from your family and don't forget to pray because God will give you the
wisdom to choose the right path."

Student 14: "My advice to them, they should first find out and discover
their talents or skills they have and also they should ask for advice from
they're family because they are the one knows you very well”.

Student 15: "You must know your priority first for you to not encounter
hardships."

Base on the advice gathered from the students, the most similar
suggestion is to know yourself well first. Also, find out your hobbies,
interest, and talents before you make a decision about choosing your
course. Moreover, they give a suggestion that they should think thoroughly
before deciding what course they will pursue because there are numerous
things at stake.

The following study proves the result of the third question. According
to an article published by Isaiah Emmanuel Suguitan (2018), When
choosing such things as choosing strands, always consider what your
heart dictates. Also, be true to yourself if you really love what you are
doing. It's also worth considering your hobbies, skills, and talent as a
course selection.
 It appears that the frequent advice of students to their co-students who
still have difficulties in choosing track and strand in Senior High School is
related to personality and knowing your true self because this decision
should focus on the student only. If your chosen course is appropriate for
you, you will find the activities easy, it will not be overwhelming and you
will be truly happy.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY

With the vast changes in the curriculum in the country, many students
are confused about what course they should take in Senior High School.
The purpose of this research is to identify the relevance of Personality,
Influence of the people around (peer), and Job Opportunities as the basis
of the students in choosing their courses. This research will answer the
different perspectives and advice of students to their fellow students. This
study is valuable to students, parents, teachers, schools and universities,
and lastly, for future researchers. It focuses on the students in the tenth
grade of San Jose National High School, which limits the study into 15
respondents using "convenience sampling".

The theories and the studies of various foreign and local writers
support this research. It uses Descriptive research design and the
instrument used to gather information is through a survey questionnaire. It
appears that the family is the primary consideration of the students in
choosing track and strand in Senior High School. It follows talent and
interest. The most irrelevant factor based on the gathered information is
the friend, followed by an in-demand job. Regarding what the participants’
advice to their fellow students, the most common ones are the suggestion
to evaluate yourself first as well as your interests and talents before
making a decision on what course you will choose. Furthermore, they also
suggested that it would be better to figure out their decision thoroughly
because there are many things at stake.

Based on the data, the perspectives of the researchers are relevant to the
topics mentioned in the course selection. It also says that the most
influential thing to refer to is the family and on the other hand, the friend is
the least considered factor. The recommendations that researchers give is
as much as possible, before choosing a course to take, you should first
assess yourself, ask for opinions on people you can trust, ask for support
among the people around you, prepare for the finances to support the
students learning and participate in orientations and seminars that aims to
help students choose the right course.

CONCLUSION

The study shows that Personality, Influence of the people around

(peer) and Job Opportunities are the few factors that students consider
prior to choosing their track and strand but they differ in their answer on
what they chose as the factors they primarily considered and disregarded.

The emerging factor that is most regarded by the students in the tenth
grade of San Jose National High School is their Families.

Based on the researchers’ analysis, the factors that are not widely
considered by the students in selecting a course is their friends.

When it comes to the advice, they have provided suggestions for their
fellow students who still have difficulties in selecting track and strand.
Many of them respond to think about their decision well and acknowledge
their true selves. Also, they advise to find out their passions, interests, and
talents first before making a decision since it is a great help in order for
them to not regret it someday because it corresponds to much bigger
responsibilities and many things depend on this decision.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following suggestions are the chosen recommendations of the

researchers to improve the decision-making of the students.

1. In the result of the study, the family appears to be the main

consideration of the students in choosing their course. The researchers
suggest having a good and sturdy relationship with each member of the
family so that they will not be ashamed to come and ask for advice.
Moreover, they are the ones who guide them and support the students’
financial needs.

2. Based on the outcome of the study, Friends is the least considered

factor by students in choosing their course. Researchers want to give a
suggestion that friends should not always be together just because they
do not want to get away from each other. As an individual, it is a must to
have your own decision that focused on yourself and not to others.

3. Based on the following advice, choose the track and strand that suits
your personality and that also includes your passion, interest, and talent. It
is important to follow your own decision because you are the only one who
will experience the result of your decision and aside from that, choose a
career where you are going to be happy and grow as an individual.

4. You can possibly conduct a seminar or orientation that aims to help

students for choosing the right track and strand suitable for them. It is a
huge help if they can execute Career Guidance and Career Assessment
seminar or orientation all around the country.

5. You can ask for opinions from important and trusted people around you
so that you have options to choose from. Ask them what course they think
is fit for you and eventually, you will come up to the right decision.
