1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1 Function
The fuel gas system delivers the fuel gas supplied by the gas supply system
(referred to in the following simply as "gas") to the EV and the SEV burners.
The flow rate corresponds to the demanded power output of the gas turboset.
The system has been integrated into the overall plant protection system, i.e.,
the trip valve immediately interrupts the supply of fuel to the burners,
whenever an emergency trip is initiated.

GT13E2 System Description

1.3 Principle of Operation

1.3.1 General
Fuel gas supply system MBP01 supplies and measures the flowrate and the
total consumption of the fuel gas to MBP31 at the required pressure. A twin
filter MBP01 AT001 ensures that the incoming fuel gas will be sufficiently
cleaned.
Main shutoff valve MBP31 AA001 and relief valve MBP31 AA002 are motor-
operated but each also has a hand wheel.
Dirt trap MBP31 AT001 downstream of the main shutoff valve prevents
particulate matter from damaging the fuel gas control valves.
Fuel gas control by power oil
Trip shutoff valve MBP40 AA001, gas control valves MBP41 AA001, MBP42
AA001, MBP43 AA001, and gas relief valve MBP50 AA001 are grouped
together in the control valve block.
The strokes of control valves MBP41 AA001, MBP42 AA001 and MBP43
AA001 and therefore the gas flows in the three supply lines to the EV burners
and lances are set by electro-hydraulic servomotors MBP41 AU001, MBP42
AU001 and MBP43 AU001.
Trip valve MBP40 AA001 and relief valve MBP50 AA001 have servomotors.
Power oil system MBX40 operates the servomotors.
Combustion gases entering the turbine (MBA30)
The combustion gases entering the turbine from the combustor MBM30 flow
through the five turbine vanes and blade rows. At the entrance of the turbine
or at the discharge of the combustor, the turbine inlet temperature (TIT) is
calculated by the EGATROL, using the turbine outlet temperatures (TAT) and
a formula. Protection against excessive TIT is as follows:
• If the TIT exceeds a preset value an alarm is generated
• If the TIT exceeds a higher preset value, a protective load shedding
(PLS) is performed
• If the TIT exceeds a maximum allowable preset value a trip is initiated
Combustion gases leaving the turbine (MBA30)
The combustion gases leaving the turbine, first enter the exhaust diffuser,
then the exhaust housing which are both part of the gas turboset. This
operation and the protection against excessive turbine outlet temperatures

(TAT) measured by MBA30 CT011 to CT103 are described in document

HTCT 690 571.

1.3.2 Standstill
During standstill, main shutoff valve MBP31 AA001, trip valve MBP40 AA001,
control valves MBP41 AA001, MBP42 AA001 and MBP43 AA001 are closed.
Relief valves MBP31 AA002 and MBP50 AA001 are open.
There is no pressure in the lines between the main shutoff valve and the
burners and lances.

1.3.3 Startup (igniters supplied with propane)

During startup and below a preset percentage of base load operation only 3/4
of the burners are in operation. These burners have pilot gas burning
capability.
Once "Automatic Start, Gas" has been selected, a startup is initiated. Relief
valves MBP31 AA002 and MBP50 AA001 close, main shutoff valve MBP31
AA001 opens. Gas flows as far as trip valve MBP40 AA001, which is still
closed. The feedback messages, "Main shutoff valve open and relief valves
closed" enable continuation of the starting program.
When ignition speed is reached, trip valve MBP40 AA001 opens. When it
leaves the closed position, the three flame monitors MBM31 CR001, CR002
and CR003 are unblocked. Ignition gas (propane) MBQ30 is started manually
and igniters MBM31 AV213 and AV613 are activated (not shown in drawings
HTCT 690 934 Z1061, -Z2061).
In the combustor, propane is lit by igniters MBM31 AV213 and AV613. When
the temperature at the igniters exceeds the preset temperature difference
within a preset time, the enable signal for continuation of the starting program
is generated.
Control air unit MBX35 AA001 supplies air for the combustion of propane in
the igniters.
The main ignition sequence is unblocked. Control valve MBP43 AA001 opens
to the ignition position (ignition gas flow). The gas required for ignition flows
through fuel gas system MBP43 (pilot) and to the 54 EV burners, which have
pilot gas burning capabilities. The pilot gas stream flows through the EV
burner cones where the combustion air is also inserted. The gas burns when
entering the annular space of combustor MBM30, initially with the help of
ignition from the flames of igniters MBM11 AV211 and AV631.

en HTCT 690 934 V0061

(7)
GT13E2 System Description

When two monitors detect flames within a preset time delay after unblocking,
the enable signal for continuation of the starting program is then generated.
Ignition gas MBQ30 is manually switched off and vented to the open.
Fuel gas system MBP41 starts to supply fuel gas to the cones in each EV
burner in which premixing with the combustion air takes place, entering the
cones tangentially. This gas / air mixture burns as soon as it enters the
annular space of MBM30. The fuel lances of the 54 EV burners continue to be
supplied with pilot gas by control MBP43. Control valves MBP41 AA001 and
MBP43 AA001 open further, slowly. The fuel flow increases and the gas
turboset is brought up to nominal speed. Then the gas turboset is connected
to the grid.

1.3.4 Startup (igniters supplied with natural gas)

Once "Automatic Start" has been selected a startup is initiated.
Relief valves MBP31 AA002 and MBP50 AA001 close, main shutoff valve
MBP31 AA001 opens. Gas flows as far as trip valve MBP40 AA001, which is
still closed. The feedback messages, "Main shutoff valve open and relief
valves closed" enable continuation of the starting program.
When ignition speed is reached, trip valve MBP40 AA001 opens.
When it leaves the closed position, the three flame monitors MBM31 CR001,
CR002 and CR003 are unblocked.
Ignition gas unit MBP60 AA001 (not shown on drawing HTCT 318 994) is put
into operation and igniters MBM31 AV213 and AV613 are activated.
Relief valve MBP60 AA030 closes. Then shutoff valves MBP60 AA010 and
AA020 open, the natural gas, supplied by fuel gas system MBP40, flows
through ignition system MBP60 to the combustor.
Igniters MBM31 AV213 and AV613 light the ignition fuel. When the
temperature measured at one igniter exceeds the preset temperature
difference within a preset time, the enable signal for continuation of the
starting program is generated (independent whether cold or hot starts take
place).
The control air unit MBX35 AA001 supplies air for the combustion of natural
gas in the igniters.
The main ignition sequence is unblocked. Control valve MBP43 AA001 opens
to the ignition position (ignition gas flow). The gas required for ignition flows
through fuel gas control MBP43 to the 54 EV burners in the combustor.

8 HTCT 690 934 V0061 en

(8)
GT13E2 System Description

There the flames of igniters MBM31 AV213 and AV613 ignite the gas.
When two monitors detect the flame within a preset time delay after
unblocking, the enable signal for continuation of the starting program is then
generated.
The ignition gas unit is shut off by the valves, turning to their "at rest" position:
first shutoff valves MBP60 AA010 and AA020 close and then relief valve
MBP60 AA030 opens to relief the line between the shutoff valves over the
roof.
Fuel gas system MBP41 starts to supply part of the EV-burners. The
headstages of the EV-burners are supplied further by fuel gas control MBP43.
Control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP43 AA001 open slowly.
As the fuel flow increases the gas turboset is brought up to nominal speed.
Then the gas turboset is connected to the grid.

1.3.5 Operation
Up to a preset percentage of base load only 3/4 of the EV burners are in
operation. They are supplied by fuel gas MBP41 and MBP43. At this preset
load the pilot gas supply is switched off (control valve MBP43 AA001 closes).
Fuel gas MBP41 remains in operation and fuel gas MBP42 is put into
operation (control valve MBP42 AA001 opens). The remaining 18 EV burners,
that have no lances, discharge fuels gas into the annular space of combustor
MBM30 and are lit by the flames of the burners already in operation at this
time.
Throughout the switchover, the control valves are controlled in such a way,
that the sum of the gas supplied maintains a constant loading gradient of the
gas turboset. Control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42 AA001 open
according to the load required.
The required power output controls the operation, but with limiting set points,
such as the maximum turbine inlet temperature.

1.3.6 Shutdown
During a normal shutdown of the gas turboset, the load is removed by slowly
closing control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42 AA001.
When the load drops below the preset percentage of base load, fuel gas
MBP42 and with it the 18 burners, which have no lances for pilot gas, switch
off (control valve MBP42 AA001 closes) and the fuel lances in the 54 EV
burners are started (control valve MBP43 AA001 opens). Throughout the

GT13E2 System Description

changeover, the control valves are controlled in such a way, that the sum of
the gas supplied maintains a constant deloading gradient of the gas turboset.
After deloading, the machine is disconnected from the grid. To reduce thermal
shock to the turbine blading, the gas turboset is idling for a preset amount of
time. Then the gas turboset is shut off and runs down.
Trip valve MBP40 AA001 and the control valves close. Relief valve MBP50
AA001 opens, thereby relieving the pressure in the line between the trip valve
and the control valves.
Then the main shutoff valve closes and relief valve MBP31 AA002 opens,
thereby relieving the pressure in the line between the main shutoff valve and
the trip valve.

1.3.7 Protective Load Shedding

During a protective load shedding (PLS), the load is removed according to the
load shedding gradient, by closing control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42
AA001.
When the load drops below a preset percentage of base load, fuel gas
system MBP42 and with it the 18 burners switch off (valve MBP42 AA001
closes) and the fuel lances of the other 54 burners are put in operation (valve
MBP43 AA001 opens).
Throughout the changeover, the control valves are controlled in such a way,
that the sum of the gas supplied maintains a constant deloading gradient of
the gas turboset. After deloading, the machine is disconnected from the grid
and remains idling.

1.3.8 Load Rejection

During load rejection, gas control valve MBP42 AA001 closes immediately
and switches off the 18 EV burners. Control valve MBP41 AA001 closes and
MBP43 AA001 opens to the ignition position.
Trip valve MBP40 AA001 and gas shutoff valve MBP31 AA001 remain open.
The turboset is held at its rated speed (idling) by the control system.

1.3.9 Trip
If an emergency trip occurs, trip valve MBP40 AA001, control valves MBP41
AA001, MBP42 AA002 and MBP43 AA001 close immediately (flames out).
Relief valve MBP50 AA001 opens and relieves the system.

1.4 Safety and Monitoring Equipment

MBM30 AX010 Pulsation measurement

The measurement measures the pulsations in the annular combustor
MBM30. If the pulsations are above the maximum allowable value,
an alarm is initiated in the control room. If the value increases further,
a protective load shedding (PLS) or a trip occurs, depending on
the frequency range and the period of time during which these
pulsations take place.

MBM31 AX001, AX002 and AX003 Sight glasses 1, 2, 3.

By removing the front (pressureless) part of a flame monitor, the
operator can look through the lenses of the flame monitors to observe
the flames with the naked eye.

MBM31 CR001, CR002 and CR003 Flame monitors 1, 2, 3

The three flame monitors monitor the flames in the combustor. When
the trip valve leaves the closed position, the three flame monitors
MBM31 CR001, CR002 and CR003 are activated.
Startup: If two monitors detect flames within the preset time
delay after unblocking, startup continues and the
ignition system is stopped. Otherwise the gas turboset
is tripped.
Operation: If two monitors detect flames operation continues.
If two monitors do not detect any flames, the gas
turboset is tripped.
Startup, Operation: If one monitor does not detect the flames, an
alarm is initiated in the control room.
The time delay for the flame monitor trip is programmed at the
factory, taking into account the particular fuel specifications.

MBM31 CT001 and CT002 Measurements of temperature.

The measurements monitor the temperatures at the igniters.
When the temperatures exceed a preset temperature difference
within a preset time, the enable signal for continuation of the
starting program is generated.
When the temperatures do not exceed the preset temperature
difference within the preset time, an alarm is initiated in the control

MBP01 CP011 Measurement of fuel gas pressure

MBP01 CT010 Measurement of fuel gas temperature

The measurements are located upstream of main shutoff valve

MBP31 AA001 and the gas heater. They monitor the gas flow to the
EV combustor.
The data from the flow meter, the temperature from MBP01 CT010
and the pressure from MBP01 CP011 are transmitted to flow
calculator MBP01 CF002 installed in a local cabinet, where the
computer calculates the gas flow rate and the total gas consumed,
taking into account the necessary corrections for measured
temperature and pressure values.

MBP01 CF002 Fuel gas flow rate and total fuel consumed
MBP01 CF002 calculates, displays and records the data in the
control room and indicates it locally.

MBP01 CP001 Measurement of pressure

The measurement monitors the pressure upstream of main shutoff
valve MBP31 AA001
- Startup: It prevents further progress of the startup program
until the pressure has reached the preset minimum level
- Startup: It prevents further progress of the startup program
until the pressure has reached the preset minimum level.
- Operation: If the pressure drops below a preset level during
operation an alarm is initiated in the control room.

MBP31 AA001-S01 and -S02 Limit switches of main shutoff valve MBP31
AA001
The limit switches monitor the valve settings "Open" (-S01) and
"Closed" (-S02) and stop the valve spindle at the limits of its travel.
If the valve fails to close completely, limit switch "Closed" initiates an
alarm in the control room.

The limit switches monitor the valve settings "Open" (-S01) and
"Closed" (-S02) and stop the valve spindle at the limits of its travel.
- Startup: If the valve fails to close completely during startup, limit
switch "Closed" initiates an alarm in the control room.
- Operation: If the valve moves out of the closed setting during
operation limit switch "Closed" initiates an alarm in the control
room
- Shutdown: Limit switch "Open" initiates an alarm in the control
room if the valve fails to open completely after a shutdown.

MBP31 AA002-S05, -S06 and -S09: Torquemeter switches and thermostat

The electric motor that operates relief valve MBP31 AA002 is
monitored by torquemeter -S05 for the valve setting "Closed", -S06
for the valve setting "Open", and the thermostat -S09.
The torquemeters stop the electric motor drive if the maximum
allowable torque to operate the valve spindle is exceeded. They
then initiate an alarm in the control room.
