DEFINITION OF TERMS

Below are some terms that you will encounter in this lesson. Be familiar with their
definition to fully understand the concepts being taught.

Polynomial – a finite sum of terms each of which is a real number or the product
of a numerical factor and one or more variable factors raised ta a whole
number power.
Factoring – the process of finding the factors of an expression, which is the
reverse process of multiplication.
Factors – these are numbers or quantities that when multiplied produces a given
number or expression.
Prime number – is a number greater than 1 which has only two positive factors: 1
and itself.
Greatest Common Monomial Factor (GCMF) — the greatest factor contained in
every term of an algebraic expression.
Prime Factor – is the factor of the number/expression which is a prime number.
Area – the amount of surface contained in figure expressed in square units.
Pattern – constitutes a set of numbers or objects in which all the numbers are
related with each other by specific rule.
Cube of a Number – is the number multiplied by itself three times. For example,
23 ( 2 )( 2 ) ( 2 )=8.

Perfect Square – is a result of multiplying an expression by itself two times. For

example, 25 is theresult of (5)2 as ( 5 ) (5 )
Perfect Square Trinomial – is the result of squaring a binomial. It has first and last
terms which are perfect squares and a middle term which is twice the
product of the square root of the first and last terms.
Perimeter – is the distance around a polygon
Volume – the measure of space occupied by a solid figure.

DISCUSSION
Lesson 1: TAKE ME OUT! Factoring Using Greatest Common Monomial factor
Recall multiplying a monomial by a polynomial using distributive property.

4
First Column Last Column
1. a (b+c ) a (b)+ a( c) ab+ ac
2. x (2 x +3 y ) x (2 x )+ x (3 y) 2 x ²−3 xy
3. 3 x (2 xy −3 xy ²) (3 x)(2 xy )+(3 x)(−3 xy ²) 6 x 2 y −9 x2 y 2
4. 2 x ² y ( 4 xy +5) (2 x ² y )(4 xy)+(2 x ² y)(5) 8 x ³ y ²+10 x ² y
5. 3 a(ab+bc +6) (3 a)(ab)+(3 a)(bc)+(3 a)(6) 3 a ² b+ 3 abc+18 a

The entries first column in the given above are called the factors (these the
numbers being multiplied) while the entries in the last column are called the products
(the result of multiplying the factors).

But let us reverse the process wherein the given is the product and we are going
to get the factors. This process is called factoring.

Let have this sample problem. One of the useful

problems appropriate in factoring is finding the
dimension of a polygon given its area. Look at the
problem below.

On the right is the picture of the new

CSNHS – Liboton Campus. The green field is
the open area being used for the conduct of
the Flag Rituals and other meaningful events.
Supposed that the area of that open field is
(5 x ² +25 x) square meters, what are the
dimensions of that open area?

When we say dimension, we refer to the length

and width of a figure. Therefore, the problem above intends to look for the length and
width of the green field in meters. Thus, this is similar to finding the two polynomials
multiplied together to find the product (5 x ² +25 x).

To find the two factors, you have to look for the Greatest Common Factor or
(GCF) of the given. Since we are referring for a polynomial, we have to call it as greatest
common monomial factor or GCMF. When we say GCMF, this is the highest factor
(composed of a number, a letter, and a letter with an exponent, or a combination of
those) that can be divided to every term of the algebraic expression. In the given above,
the CMF is 5 x . Therefore, 5 x is a factor. To find the other factor, divide 5 x to every
5 x ² 25 x
term in the given expression. That is, + =x +5. Therefore, the factors are 5 x
5x 5x
and ( x +5). To answer the problem, we can say that the green field is 5 x meters long
and ( x +5) meters wide.
To simplify:
Product GCMF Process Factors

5
5 x ² 25 x
5 x ²+ 25 x 5x + =( x +5) 5 x (x+5)
5x 5x

Other examples:

.
2 3 x 15 xy
− =(1+5 y)
3 x−15 xy 3x 3x 3x 3 x ( 1+5 y )
.
3 2 xy ² 8 y x 2
− =( y−4 x)
2 x y 2−8 yx ² 2 xy 2 xy 2 xy 2 xy ( y−4 x)
.
4 4 x ³ y ³ 9x ² y ³
+ =(4 x +9)
4 x3 y 3 +9 x ² y ³ x² y³ x² y³ x² y³ x ² y ³(4 x+ 9)

6 y 5 18 y 3 9 y 4 3 y ³(2 y ²−6+3 y)
5 − +
3 y ³ 3 y3 3 y ³
6 y 5−18 y 3 +9 y ⁴ 3 y³
.
= 2 y ²−6+ 3 y
There are some cases that the given polynomials do not have a
common monomial factor except 1. This polynomial is called prime.
Example, 3 ab+2 cd does not have a common monomial factor which
means, we cannot divide any factor to the two terms except 1.
Therefore, 3 ab+2 cd is prime.

For Science, Technology and Engineering Students (STES)

The concept of finding the common monomial factor can be associated with
factoring by grouping. Let’s look at the examples below.
Example No. 1. Factor out ac +bc +ad +bd .

The process used above is called factoring by grouping.

ASSESSMENT. This is to check your understanding.

Use the pattern above to find the factors of the following algebraic expressions.
If the given is not factorable, write the word “prime”.

1. 10 ab−2 a 4. −8 a ²+ 16 a ² b−40 a ² c
2. 6 x ² y−15 x ³ 5. −15 xy ² z −12 x ³ y ²

Write the factored form of the following polynomials. If the given is not
factorable, write the word “prime”.
1. 6 abc−15 a ² bc 4. 8 a ² bc−8 ab ² c +8 abc ²
2. 2 x ² y−2 x ³ z 5. ax +2 y +5 ay

7
3. 12 x ³ y ³+ 4 x ² y
For STE students:
6. 2 ac+ 8 ad−3 bc−12 bd 7. 16 x−4 xy−3 y +12

DISCUSSION
Lesson 2: The Plus and Minus Technique: Factoring Difference of Two Squares
Recall multiplying sum and difference of a binomial.

First Column Last Column

1. ( x + y )( x− y) ( x)²−( y) ² x ²− y ²
2. (2 a+3)(2 a−3) (2 a)²−(3)² 4 a ²−9
3. ( x−2 y )( x+2 y ) ( x)²−(2 y ) ² x ²−4 y ²
4. ( 4 a−5 y)( 4 a+5 y ) ( 4 a) ²−(5 y) ² 16 a ²−25 y ²

8
5. (2 x ²−5 y)( 2 x ²+5 y) (2 x ²)²−(5 y ²) ² 4 x ⁴−25 y ⁴

The entries in the first column in the given above are called the factors (these
the numbers being multiplied) while the entries in the last column are called the
products (the result of multiplying the factors). Notice that the entries in the first
column are actually binomials that differ only in the operation, one is addition the other
is subtraction. This type of given is called sum and difference of a binomial. The shortest
solution in multiplying this type of given is simply squaring the first and second terms
and the middle operation is always subtraction (recheck this using the FOIL Method).
The resulting product is called the difference of two squares.

But let us reverse the process wherein the given is the difference of two squares
and we are going to get the sum and difference of two squares.

Sample Problem:

The picture of Mayon Volcano is enclosed

in a square figure frame made up of bamboo.
The area of the picture of Mayon Volcano is 16
square units and the area of the square picture
frame made up of bamboo is x 2 square units.
Write a polynomial in factored form to
represent the difference between the area of
the bamboo frame and the picture of the
Mayon Volcano.

The problem intends to look for the length and width

of the picture frame. The difference between the areas of
the picture frame and the area of the picture of Mayon Volcano can be expressed as
( x ²−16) square units. Therefore, we only have to look for the factors of ( x 2−16 ) .

To find the two factors, we only have to look for the principal square root of the
first term and the second term. That is √ x ² ¿ x and √ 16 ¿ 4 . Then get their sum and
difference; that is x 2−16=( x +4 )( x−4 )
To simplify:
Product Process Factors
√ x² ¿ x
x 2−16 ( x +4 )( x−4)
√ 16 ¿ 4
Therefore, the picture frame is ( x +4 ) units long and ( x−4) units wide.
To sum up,

Steps in Factoring Difference of Two Squares

1. Get the principal square root of the first and second term of the given
polynomial.
2. Write the product as sum and difference of two binomials.

For Science, Technology and Engineering Students (STES)

Other problems in factoring difference of two square may appear like this.

1. Factor out (2 x−3)2−( y +2 )2 .

Solution:
Let 2 x−3=a and y +2=b
Therefore, (2 x−3)2−( y +2 )2 is the same as a 2−b2
Then, a 2−b2= ( a+b ) ( a−b )

10
Since, 2 x−3=a and y +2=b
Therefore, ( 2 x−3 )2−( y +2 )2= [( 2 x−3 ) + ( y +2 ) ][ ( 2 x−3 )−( y +2 ) ]
And simplify. ( 2 x−3 )2−( y +2 )2=(2 x+ y −1)(2 x− y −5)

ASSESSMENT. This is to check your understanding.

Use the pattern above to find the factors of the following algebraic expressions.
If the given is not factorable, write the word “prime”.

1. 25 a2 −1 4. −144 x 4 +25 y 6

Lesson 3: THE PLUS AND MINUS TECHNIQUES 2:
Factoring Sum and Difference of Two Cubes
Recall multiplying a special binomial and a trinomial below.
First Column Second Column
( x + y )( x2−xy + y ²) 3
1. x +y³
2. (a+ 3)( a2−3 a+ 9) a 3+27
3. ( x−2 y )(x2 +2 xy +4 y ²) x ³−8 y ³
4. ( 4 a−5 y)(16 a 2+20 ay +2 5 y ²) 6 4 a ³−1 25 y ³
5. (2 x ²−5 y)(4 x 4 +10 x 2 y +25 y ²) 4 x ⁴−25 y ⁴

The entries in the first column called factors are special binomial and trinomial
while the entries while the entries in the second column are their products called sum
or difference of cubes. To find these products, we simply used the FOIL Method or the

11
technique is to simply get the cube of the first and second terms of the binomials in the
given factors. Just like in the, first example ( x + y )( x2−xy + y ²), the binomial factor is
( x + y ). In using the shortcut, just find the cube of the first term and the cube of the
second term and the operation depends on the operation used in the binomial factor.
That is,

( x + y ) ( x 2−xy + y2 )

( x )3=x 3 and ( y )3= y ³, then ( x + y ) ( x 2−xy + y2 ) = x 3+ y ³
