The Effectiveness of Drama method to improve speaking and communication skills of Libyan EFL

students in high school

CHAPTER 1
Introduction
1.1 Introduction

Speaking skill is one of the productive skills of English language.  " speaking
skill has been viewed as the most challenging of the four language skills "
( Bailey and Savage 1994) . In other words,  speaking skill requires practicing
English as in real life.  After many years of English learning and teaching
students don't get the confidence of using English in and outside of the class .
Despite of that teachers need to create  creative activities  , that can simulate
the real life situations which include emotions, feelings and expressions. They
need to organize communication activities in order to let the learners get
involved  and practice more in the classroom. Some students in classrooms
face many struggles in speaking.  They tend to use their native language more
than target language. Also, they do the speaking exercises only to get the
mark . However, some of them  shy and don't have the confidence to speak
front of the class , because  they have lack of vocabularies and expressions
that can be used during of the activities . So one the English practicing process
is drama method.  Drama is a appliance in communicative language learning
and it is a creative form of learning.  Drama method can develop the speaking
skill of EFL students. Also, it is a process that both teachers and students are
working in and out of role . It can develop the stages of speaking skill with an
enjoyable atmosphere in the classroom.  " Drama is concerned with the world
of " let's pretend; It asks the learner to project himself imaginatively into
another situations, outside the classroom , or into the skin of another person "
( Holden 1982 :1) . Although the drama method simulates  real communicative
situations . It provides students the confidence to speak front of the class also
improves their vocabulary by learning new words with different situations. 
Furthermore,  it can fix the pronunciation issues by teacher's monitoring
during the drama activities. 

1.2 The Statement of the problem :


Students face a lot of speaking difficulties during the classroom.  Some of
them don't have the confidence to speak in or out the class . Others have lack
of vocabularies and expressions that can be used in real life.  Teachers tend to
use drama method to make students involve and overcome their fairness of
speaking . It plays an important role in classrooms that can build up their
speaking skills and make them more confident.  Despite of that , there are
many studies in this field that investigate the role of drama method in English
speaking.

1.3 The research questions:


1. How can drama method improve and effect student 's speaking?
2. What kind of activities that can be used in drama method to improve
speaking skill ?
3. Is there an noticeable change or development before and after using drama
method in English speaking?

1.4 The objective of the study:

1. To equip students with several of new words and expressions, and boost
their speaking confidence and pronunciation .
2. To show many types of activities that can be used in drama method to
improve speaking skill in and out the class .
3. To show evidence of the improvement and the effectiveness before and
after using this method.

1.5 Significance of the study:

The result of this study will boost student's confidence in speaking and it will
be valuable to them to know how to overcome speaking struggles by using
this method.
Also, will provide teachers with a lot of activities that can be used during this
method. However,  it will provide high schools the way of working to develop
student's speaking skills.
