Hello there! How are you? Do you miss being in school? I do.
Don’t worry you will soon see your friends and teachers in school.

Now before we will proceed with our first lesson for this school year, let us have a warm up activity.

Mario found some empty bins where he put used cans for recycling. He put 23 empty cans in the first bin, 32 empty
cans in the second bin, 41 empty cans in the third bin, and 50 empty cans in the fourth bin.

Can you guess how many cans would be the 5th and the 6th bin?

Complete the table below:

BIN Empty Cans
First 23
Second 32
Third 41
Fourth 50
Fifth
Sixth

From the table of values , what have you noticed to the correspondence between the counting numbers and the
number of empty cans?

Yes very good...As you can observe to obtain the 5 th and 6th bin, Mario added 9 cans Score Description
to the 5th and 6th bin, therefore the 5th bin has 59 cans and the 6th bin has 68 cans 13 - 15 Excellent

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson ( Pag-uugnay ng mga halimbawa sa bagong aralin)
The ordered list numbers, such as
Triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15,…
Square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, …
Pentagonal numbers: 1, 5, 12, 22, 35, …

are called sequences of numbers. A sequence may be generated from shapes, patterns, or rules. In the above
example, the number of dots generates the sequences of the figurate numbers. Each number in sequence is called a
term. Each term is identified by its position in the ordered list. The terms are usually
denoted by a 1 , a2 , a3 , … . For the sequence of triangular numbers: 1, 3,, 6, 10, Score Description

1. Find a5, a6, a7 of the sequence described by F(n) = {4, 7, 10, 13, a5, a6, a7 }
Solution: In the given sequence

a term is obtained by adding +3 to the previous term.

a5 = 13 + 3 = 16
a6 = 16 + 3 = 19
a7 = 19 + 3 = 22

Will you try this: Given a sequence defined by f(n) = {15, 7, -1, -9, a 5 , a6 } , find a5, and a6
You should get a5 = -17 and a6 = -25

If not, I am sorry but you have to go back to example number 1 and try all over again.

2. Find a5, a6, a7 of the sequence described by H(n) = {7, 14, 28, 56, a 5, a6, a7 }
Solution: In the given sequence

a term is obtained by multiplying 2 to the previous term.

a5 = 56 x 2 = 112
a6 = 112 x 2 = 224
a7 = 224 x 2 = 448

Will you try this: Given a sequence defined by f(n) = {3, 9, 27, 81, a5 , a6 } , find a5, and a6
You should get a5 = 243 and a6 = 729

If not, I am sorry but you have to go back to example number 1 and try all over again.

3. Write the next three terms of the sequence described by G(n) = {1, 4, 9, 16, a5, a6, a7 }
Solution: In the given sequence

a term is obtained by adding odd numbers starting at 3 to the previous term.

a5 = 16 + 9 = 25
a6 = 25 + 11 = 36
a7 = 36 + 13 = 49

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2 (Pagtalakay ng bagong konsepto at paglalahad ng bagong
kasanayan #2

Let us derive the rule for generating sequence.

Let us discover the equation of the sequence by looking at the pattern
1. 7, 10, 13, 16, …
Solution: We want to know the equation of these sequence. First, let us make a table, on the first row are the
terms and on the 2nd row are numbers.

The pattern in the sequence is by adding 3 to the previous term. Suppose we are looking for the 100 th term of the
sequence.
What is the fastest way of adding 3 to get the 100th term? --- that is by multiplying by 3.
So the formula will begin with n ×3 , because we keep repeating adding 3.

So let us try it on the first term --- n ×3

1 ×3=3, but we want 7

Now let us try it on the 2nd term --- n ×3

2 ×3=6, but we want 10

Now, think of a number that if we will add or subtract it by 3 will get 7 and if we add or subtract it by 6 we will have 10.
a 1=1× 3=3 --------- to get 7 we have to add 4
a 1=1× 3=3+ 4=7

a 2=2× 3=6 --------- to get 10 we have to add 4

a 2=2× 3=6 +4=10

Therefore, our equation is n ×3+ 4 or 3 n+ 4

Lets try it on the 4th term a 4=3 n+ 4

a 4=3 ( 4 ) + 4=16

We derive with the equation: a n=3 n+ 4

2. Determine the rule that govern in the given sequence: 3, 8, 13, ….

The pattern in the sequence is by adding 5 to the previous term. What is the fastest way of adding 5?
By multiplying 5 ------ So the formula will begin with n ×5 , because we keep repeating adding 5.

So let us try it on the first term --- n ×5

1 ×5=5, but we want 3

Now let us try it on the 2nd term --- n ×5

2 ×5=10, but we want 8
Now, think of a number that if we will add or subtract it by 5 will get 3 and if we add or subtract it by 10 we will have 8.
a 1=1× 5=5 --------- to get 3 we have to subtract 2
a 1=1× 5=5−2=3

6
a 2=2× 5=10 --------- to get 8 we have to subtract 2
a 2=2× 5=10−2=8

Therefore, our equation is n ×5−2 or 5 n−2

Will you try this: determine the equation of the sequence by looking at the pattern: 3, 10, 17, ….
You should get a n=n ×7−4∨an=7 n−4

3. Determine the equation of the sequence by looking at the pattern: 2, 4, 6, …

The pattern in the sequence is by adding 2 to the previous term. What is the fastest way of adding 2?
By multiplying 2 ------ So the formula will begin with n ×2 , because we keep repeating adding 5.

So let us try it on the first term --- n ×2

1 ×2=2 ,

Now let us try it on the 2nd term --- n ×2

2 ×2=4 ,
As you can see we don’t have to add or subtract any number because got the right value for each term

Therefore, our equation is n ×2 or 2 n

Activity 4: Write the first 4 terms of these sequence described by each equation.
1. 5 , 9 , 13 ,17 , . .

Patterns are important because they offer visual clues to an underlying order. If you can unlock a pattern, then
you have the ability to alter or shape it in order to achieve some effect. Patterns can also be used as a template that will
enable one to quickly analyze a situation and understand how it works.

Can you think a situation on how to applied patterns in your daily life?

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson (Paglalahat ng aralin)

As for our summary, in generating patterns

1. Sequence is a succession of numbers

2. A sequence may be generated from shapes, patterns, or rules. Each number in sequence is called a
term.
3. To obtain the next term of the sequence, we have to identify the pattern.
4. To determine the unknown terms described by the equation, substitute the number for n.
5. To determine the rule that govern in the given sequence, identify first the pattern then think of number that
will satisfy your sequence.
