WELLNESS VS. WELL-BEING
CJ: Okay. Have some water first, right on the table.
AYESSA: Thanks. In the recent days, I feel like I’m not myself. But I did seem to be lost when it comes
to my other stuffs in life.
CJ: I see that there is something bothering you. Tell me about it.
AYESSA: Yesterday, I had a surprise party from my colleagues after work but instead of rejoicing I cried
because I really don’t know what to feel. Don’t get me wrong Doc I always try to be fit despite my
schedule
CJ: Maybe there’s something inside you that is needing to get out. In our life, we have wellness and well-
being. Well-being is often confused with wellness, although they share common concepts, well-being is
referred as a state rather than actions.
AYESSA: What about it, Doc?
CJ: So what is the clear difference between the 2? So, wellness is a quality of being healthy which
consists of choices we make in order to achieve and optimal life. According to the Global Wellness
Institute in 2010, they stated that wellness is “the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that
lead to a state of holistic health. Basically, wellness is the set of actions that we take to achieve our certain
health goals.
On the other hand, we have well-being. Well-being is the state of being healthy, happy, and
successful. This considers the entirety of an individual both body and soul. According to the Global
Wellness Institute last 2010, they defined Well-being as a “perception of a state of being”.
We can relate well-being simply on a question about “how we are doing as a person, community,
or as a country.
I have here a table for you to identify the distinct similarities and differences between the two.
Wellness and Well-being are both subjective, personal, and multidimensional that may vary from culture
and history. We can see here that wellness relates to intention, action, and activities and on the other hand
well-being is the overall contentment, health, and happiness. Next is, wellness may be mainly about the
physical dimension because these are observable actions while well-being is prominent in terms of mental
and emotional dimension because it is our perception about the things we do from well-being. Wellness,
is our healthy lifestyle choices that we choose to religiously follow everyday while well-being is the
result from these actions and here we can feel satisfaction. Lastly, we have wellness as being common in
the private or business sector such as wellness establishments that offers us on how we can further
improve our actions like gym for exercise. Unlike wellness, well-being is usually in policy or
government, an example of this is the well-being budget that focuses on the living standards to be pursued
by a nation.
AYESSA: Oooooh okay, Doc. But how does Wellness affect Well-being in our lives?
HOW DOES WELLNESS AFFECT WELL-BEING
CJ: Good question. Here’s how wellness have an impact to our well-being. It is the way we execute our
actions of wellness determines our quality of well-being.
Let’s put for example when you plant a seed of an apple, how you treat it will determine its taste
and quality but not all people who eats apple has the same definition on what is a perfect apple because
we all have different taste buds yet the process of growing an apple has a standard procedure which
makes it edible for everyone and it’s up for the farmers on how they will add steps in its growth to give it
more quality
Same as with the steps we take in wellness, it will determine our quality of well-being but not
everyone has the same perspective on what well-being looks like because some may say that it is
happiness and health others might say that it is financial stability and good relationships. But as we
achieve our well-being there will be a pattern of wellness towards this and it is up to us on how we will
customize it for our own good.
AYESSA: Thanks, Doc. Now, I know the clear difference between the 2.
CJ: Now at this point let’s try to go further with well-being.
AYESSA: I have knowledge about that because I was once a teacher about health.
CJ: Nice! Tell me about it.
ASPECTS OF WELL-BEING
AYESSA: There are many aspects of well-being but most of the time here are the common 5 that we
relate to it. We have the physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual.
First is the physical, it is our ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get the
most out of our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress or our body’s general
condition. We can simply define it as our capacity to perform activities without hindrances of
physical limitations or body pain. Our physical well-being is achieved through healthy living and
good exercise habits.

Next, we have Psychological Well-being, it may be sometimes referred as “Mental Well-being”

and this is our ability to process and understand information and experiences. It includes the
ability to maintain a sense of autonomy, self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life and
self-esteem.

We also have, social well-being. This well-being is our ability to communicate and develop
meaningful relationships. It may portray our feeling of the sense of belongingness and social
inclusion in which we can maintain a support network. We can include here our management of
relationships and positive interaction with others.

Aside from those, we also have spiritual well-being. This is the one that relates to life’s meaning
and purpose. It portrays our connection to something bigger than us, the sense of inner peace and
purpose, and does not directly means that is related to religion. Here we can also include our
relationship to culture, community, religiosity, ethics, and our beliefs.

Lastly, we have emotional well-being that refers to our awareness and management of our
emotions. It includes how we express our feelings and emotions appropriately in certain
situations and experiences.
CJ: That’s great. I’m glad to know that you know our aspects of our well-being. Just a reminder all of
these aspects should be balance because they work together in order to give us a well-rounded life. In
order to balance that, we should know ourselves first.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
LEIGH: So you’ve said that you are having confusions about what to feel or react?
JOELY: Yes. I feel so lost lately.
LEIGH: Tell me about it.
JOELY: There was this scene yesterday that concerns me because that wasn’t me.
LEIGH: What do you mean it wasn’t you?
JOELY: Well, I am a very calm person. But yesterday it felt like something inside me was about to come
out, like some monster. I was afraid I might hurt anyone.
LEIGH: Okay I can see that you are very upset with it. So I’m going to show you some pictures and tell
me how what emotions does the following convey to you. Is it okay with you?
JOELY: Yeah, sounds good. Let me see
LEIGH: I know that you are a Nationalian. So, here’s the first picture. What does this manifest to your
emotions?

JOELY: Well, that will make me extremely happy!

LEIGH: Good for you. How about this?

JOELY: I’ve watch those shows. I’ll definitely be angry too.

LEIGH: Okay. How about this 3rd one?
JOELY: That scene was devastating I’ll be so sad while I’m crying too.
LEIGH: Let me see how you will react to this.

JOELY: Well, that may be funny to some but for me that pictures shows fear.
LEIGH: Very nice. Let’s proceed with the 4th one. What emotions does this make you feel?

JOELY: That’s pretty funny too. But that picture shows the emotion of disgust.
LEIGH: Very good. How about this last picture?

JOELY: I know that, that was from a meme. I can say that photo has the emotion of surprise.
LEIGH: Excellent! You got a 6/6, I guess you know your emotions very well. With that, you have said
that something is confusing inside you am I right? What is it about?
JOELY: I know that it wasn’t from school because our finals ended last week. I can’t really point it out
for now.
LEIGH: I understand. So you’ve said that something inside you is off or not quite right. In life we have
different well-beings that help us to get through different challenges we face. And when we talk about
health and wellbeing, majority of us may conclude that is about our bodies and our physical health.
Nothing is wrong with having a fit and healthy body because it is essential but there is an equally vital
part to our optimal health, it is our emotional well-being
Before we proceed with emotional well-being, let’s define what emotions are first. Emotions are
often confused with feelings and moods. Emotions are event-driven and according to the
American Psychological Association or APA, they’ve defined emotions as “a complex reaction
pattern, involving experiential, behavioral and physiological elements” Complex, because those
can be combined with each other to form new emotions. Awhile, we had a very simple test and
that resulted for us to identify the 6 basic emotions that we have which are happy, anger, sadness,
disgust, surprise, and fear. I have a very simple chart on how emotions can be overlapping with
each other, although it only manifest the 6 basic emotions that we have. This characters were
from the movie Inside Out by Pixar Animation Studios and the chart was from Vox.
Next is we have mood. Moods are the short-lived state that is usually in small intensity. Then
feelings, which are made dues to emotional experience which a person experience consciously
and are learned unlike emotions which are event driven.
Now that we know the difference between the 3. We can now focus on Emotional Well-being.
Emotional well-being includes a positive balance of pleasant to unpleasant affect and a cognitive
appraisal of satisfaction with life in general. It portrays on how we express our feelings and
emotions appropriately in certain situations and experiences.
It is seen as a component of positive mental health and positive emotions results an increase in
emotional well-being because positive emotions broaden people’s attention, thinking, and
thought-action repertoires.
This well-being is basically our regulation of emotions towards the better good.
It is also believed that Emotional Well-being has resilience as one of its foundation because it
allows us to navigate the challenges we face in life because resilience helps us to learn our
emotions in every situation we encounter.
RESILIENCE AS A FOUNDATION
LEIGH: So how can resilience be the foundation to our Emotional Well-being? Here’s how,
Resilience grows when we recognize those that triggers our emotions and we manage to express
them properly to others and ourselves. So as we focus on learning our emotions through
resilience we can receive and offer feedback with a healthy perspective and have discussions and
difficult conversations with anyone because we are now more open and knowledgeable to our
emotions. Lastly, it establish stronger relationships for we are able to know what triggers us, we
can now avoid the events that may affect our emotional well-being and be a cause to have a
misunderstanding among other people.
For example, when you are in a group of friends and a certain narration or topic triggers your
anger. There you know when to excuse yourself in order to avoid an argument between them. Or
to transform that adversity, begin by observing and managing your thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors. It you helps determine the actions you take and completely changes the way you
handle stressful situations and make decisions.*
As our resilience increases, our emotional well-being increases to, and add up to our level of
understanding, empathy, humor, and compassion increases. You view yourself and others with
less judgment.
JOELY: Oh. I now understand why I am feeling confused lately. It’s because I just need to organize my
thoughts, then organize my emotions so that I know what and when to react in situations that I may find
difficult to approach.
LEIGH: It’s great to know that you are now having realizations in our today’s session. So for now,
would you mind enlightening me on what is the importance our emotional well-being?
IMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
JOELY: Yes. No problem. With its definition and resilience as its foundation I have found that it is very
vital for our effective learning
Effective learning because emotions has a substantial influence on the cognitive processes in
humans, including perception, attention, learning, memory, reasoning, and problem solving.
LEIGH: Yes. That is based on an actual study which according to Amin et.al. on their research entitled
“The Influences of Emotion on Learning and Memory”. They said that is has a specific impact with
attention and emotions motivates our behaviour. So the better we handle our emotions, the better our
attention, and motivation. Thus, improving our learning performance and knowledge about relevant
information. You may proceed, sorry for the interruption, very great realization by the way.
JOELY: Thank you. Next I have thought that the better we manage our emotions we also increase
productivity.
Productivity for it somewhat related to learning. Having our emotions managed will help us to
emphasize the activities that matter to us more. Therefore, increasing our work rate without
putting ourselves at risk of exhaustion.
Then, emotional well-being can also be vital in our creativity because there are times that when
we cannot express our emotions through words, we make it through the form of art and literature.
When we are aware of our emotional well-being we can form more healthy relationships because
we are now aware on how to regulate emotions which makes use aware of understanding other
people too and have a stronger bond with them. Our emotional well-being makes use
compassionate and empathetic
Having a good emotional well-being can also have a positive impact to our health because we are
now knowledgeable of our stressors, making it easier for us to trim down the events that
overwhelms us. Making our sleep and eating habits better
When we are able to handle our emotional well-being we also have good health. As result, we
have more years to look forward in the near future because we have lesser risk in many diseases.

HOW TO IMPROVE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
LEIGH: In order to keep up with further improving your emotional well-being. Here are some advice
that I can offer.
First is take your time to pause and reflect when you get overwhelmed during a stressful day or
situation. Being aware of what events triggers your different emotions can help you better
regulate them
Although stress makes some people motivated, make sure to manage it in order to avoid the
bombardment of emotional burden from it. Find an outlet or something that you can vent your
stress out such as massage, writing journals, watching your favourite shows, or anything that may
help you relax.
When exposed to a situation that triggers your anger, take time to count from 1-10 to alleviate
aggression. This can also be in the form of meditation because it can improve one’s awareness
and express it constructively.
Accept your mistakes and know that imperfections are normal. Talk to someone if it is too heavy
for you to carry in order to lessen the emotional baggage.

Get quality sleep if you can. Lacking sleep does not only affect your judgement and decision
making skills, it also increase your aggression motivated by anger. So make sure to count your
hours of sleep.

Learning, one thing that can do wonders for our well-being is learning something that you can
continually improve. Practicing a new hobby that you can use to improve your skills may help
you discover more activities that can help you on managing stress. Ideally, try to do something
that has tangible milestones.

If you feel that sorting your emotions are difficult, do not hesitate to talk to someone regarding
this or to a professional to help you be more mindful of it.
For our session for today. As a learning reflection, let me ask you how does negative emotions help you?
HOW NEGATIVE EMOTIONS HELP US?
JOELY: Well, for me. Negative emotions will help us in terms of awareness
Awareness because
It can also provide clues when something is wrong. It is very likely to help our survival as well.
Bad feelings can be important clues that a health problem, relationship, or other important issue
requires attention.
So instead of avoiding negative emotions, we should accept them. Acknowledge how we feel
without rushing to change your emotional state. It is impossible to completely avoid negative
emotions, because living means experiencing setbacks and conflicts. Learning to deal with these
emotions is key.
That may be all, Doc.
EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AND HUMAN HEALTH
LEIGH: I’m very glad you are beginning to sort things out inside you. Before we end our session let’s
relate how our emotional well-being and our health relates.
Health affects well-being and well-being itself affects health. First, how does health affect our
emotional well-being when our health is poor this will impact how we handle our emotions. For
example it may lead us to become extremely sad or may be angry because of the stress of having
illness or injury. On the other hand, when we do not regulate our emotions this may lead us to
being overwhelmed in situation that may have an impact to our health. For example, if you are in
range or in deep sadness it may lead you to staying more hours at night and having less sleep that
may make you weaken your immune system and be vulnerable to different diseases.
