Critical Disruptive Voltage

• The potential gradient at which a dielectric
disrupts fully is called as dielectric
strength.
• For air,
• g= 30 kV(max)/cm at NTP
• g = 21.1 kV(rms)/cm at NTP
• The voltage at which maximum electric
field equals the dielectric strength of air
surrounding the conductor is called Critical
Disruptive Voltage.

Corona Loss
• The power lost in the form of light and
sound due to Corona Phenomenon is called
as Corona Loss.
Factors of Corona Loss
• Supply Frequency

• Spacing of Conductors

• Atmospheric Conditions

• Dust, Rain and Snow

Factors of Corona Loss
• Conductor Radius

• Surface Conditions

• Profile
Advantages & Disadvantages
• It dissipates energy of surges and reduces high voltages and steep frontend
waveform

• The effective diameter of conductor is increased so capacitance is increased.

• Third Harmonic Currents are induced.

• Interference with Communication Lines and Wireless Signals

Methods of Reduction
• Large Diameter Conductors

• Hollow Conductors

• Bundled Conductors
The corona loss on a particular system at 50Hz is
1kW/km/phase. The corona loss at 60 Hz would be?
Increasing diameter of conductor increases
Corona Loss.
Corona Loss is 0 for HVDC System.
