P020D-FUEL INJECTOR 4 PERFORMANCE

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.

Theory of Operation

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can detect when unintended fuel injection occurs by monitoring fuel rail pressure
and engine speed. If this condition occurs, the engine will typically die and not start. There will be exhaust smoke during
cranking and no fuel rail pressure will be developed during cranking. This DTC will be active during cranking if this
condition exists. Progressive cylinder damage may occur if the engine is operated for an extended period of time with this
condition. This fault code is logged when the PCM determines that unintended fuel injection has occurred.

Theory of Operation

• When Monitored:

While the engine is running.

• Set Condition:

When the PCM determines that unintended fuel injection has occurred.

Possible Causes

LOOSE VALVE COVER HARNESS WIRES ON THE FUEL INJECTOR TERMINALS

FUEL INJECTOR

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based
Diagnostics/MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

1. ACTIVE DTC

NOTE: If DTCs P0192, P0193, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305,
or P0306 are present, repair those DTCs before proceeding with this one.
1. Turn the ignition on.
2. With the scan tool check for active DTCs.

Is the DTC active?

Yes • Go To 2

No • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITOIN diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/

MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

2. CHECKING FOR A LEAKING FUEL INJECTOR

1. Turn the ignition off.

1
2. Remove the valve cover and check for loose valve cover harness wires at the injector terminals for the injector
experiencing the DTC

NOTE: The injector terminal nuts should be torqued to 8.8 in-lbs.

Were any of the injector terminal nuts loose?

Yes • Torque the loose injector terminal nuts to 8.8 in-lbs.

• Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/
MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

No • Go To 3

3. CHECKING FOR A LEAKING FUEL INJECTOR

1. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
2. With scan tool, verify fuel level is above 15%. If not, add fuel, go to 3.
3. Start engine and operate vehicle until coolant temperature is above 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

NOTE: It is important that the conditions in steps 2 and 3 are met for the test to function properly.
4. Operate vehicle at 50 mph and perform a zero fueling event (decel condition for 10 seconds, with foot off of
accelerator pedal). Repeat 3-5 times.
5. With the scan tool, check for DTCs.

Did the injector performance DTC return for the suspect injector and high pressure connector?

Yes • Replace the fuel injector and high pressure connector in accordance with the Service Information.(Refer to 14
- Fuel System/Fuel Inspection/INJECTOR(S), Fuel/Removal)
• Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/
MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).

No • Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITOIN diagnostic procedure. (Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/

MODULE, Powertrain Control (PCM) - Standard Procedure).
