1. (i) Air at 1 bar and 298.15 K (25°C) is compressed to 5 bar and 298.15 K by two different
mechanically reversible processes:.

(a) Cooling at constant pressure followed by heating at constant volume.

Calculate the heat and work requirements and ΔU and ΔH of the air for each path. The following
heat capacities for air may be assumed independent of temperature:

Cv=20.78 J mol-1 K-1 and Cp=29.10 J mol-1 K-1

Assume also for air that PV/T is a constant, regardless of the changes it undergoes. At 298.15 K and 1
bar the molar volume of air is 0.02479 m 3 mol-1. (3)

(ii) For steady flow through a heat exchanger at approximately atmospheric pressure, what is the
final temperature when heat in the amount of 800KJ is added to 10 mol of ethylene initially at
200°C? (7)

(iii) Calculate the standard heat of the following reaction at 25°C:

4NH3(g) + 5O2(g) 4NO(g) + 6H2O(g) (2)

2. (i) Differentiate reversible and irreversible process. (any 2 points) (2)

(ii) Derive the expression of the Sensible-Heat Integral. (4)

(iv) “Work done depend on the nature of the process. It is path dependent”. Justify the statement
graphically. (2)

(iii) When a system is taken from a to b along path acb, 100 J of heat flows into the system and the
system does 40 J of work.

C b

P d

a e

(a) How much heat flows into the system along path aeb if the work done by the system is 20 J?
(b) The system returns from b to a along path bda. If the work done on the system is 30 J, does
the system absorb or liberate heat? How much? (4)

3. (i) If reversible process is an imaginary process than why we give so much importance to this
process? (2)

(ii) When liquid water in equilibrium with a mixture of water vapour and nitrogen, calculate the
degree of freedom of the system? (2)

(III) The gas stream from a sulfur burner consists of 15 mol% SO 2, 20 mol% O2, and 65 mol% N2. The
gas stream at atmospheric pressure and 400°C enters a catalytic converter where 86% of the SO 2 is
further oxidized to SO3. On the basis of 1mol of gas entering, how much heat must be removed from
the converter so that the product gasesleave at 500°C? (8)
