Emphasize that there are times that the information is not clearly stated. Writers often
tell you more than they say directly. They give you hints or clues that help you “read
between the lines.”
B. Springboard/ Motivation Engage students with the topic by telling them the following story (or consider
creating one of your own!):
I'm reading a great mystery book and was talking to a friend last night and she
accidentally told me the ending!!!
Ask students to guess how you felt about this situation.
Ask them to support their guesses with evidence.
Discuss this 'inferring' process and tell them they are drawing conclusions, a
super-smart reading strategy.
