Solving Quadratic Equation by Extracting the
Square Root
Introductory Message!

For the facilitator:

Welcome to Mathematics 9 Self Learning Module on Solving Quadratic Equation by

Extracting the Square Root!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
self-learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning
module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Solving

Quadratic Equation by Extracting the Square Root!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace
and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while
being an active learner.

This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

EXPECTATIONS

1. Solve quadratic equation by extracting square roots.

2. Apply square root method in solving problems.

PRETEST

BEFORE LESSON RESPONSE: Can the equations below be solved by square root
method? Write YES or NO. Write your answer inside the box.

1. 3h² = 0
2. m² + 5m + 6 = 0

3. 5y² = 25

4. z² − 4z + 1 = 0

5. 2n² − 12n = 0

6. 5(x − 2)2 = 20

7. (p + 13)2 = 81

8. t² + 4t = 9

9. −2w² = −32

10. (x + 2)2 − 9 = 0
RECAP

Will you identify which are rational and

which are irrational numbers in the
following: √25, √2, 3.1416…, ½, √8, 3, 0.75

RATIONAL NUMBERS: A rational number is a number that can be written in the

form p/q where p and q are integers and q is not equal to zero.
1
EXAMPLES: 3, , √25 , 0.75
2

IRRATIONAL NUMBERS: Numbers that cannot be written as simple fraction, not a

perfect square and decimals that goes on forever without repeating.

EXAMPLES: √2, 𝜋=3.1416… , √8

LESSON

If a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 has no bx term, you can solve the equation,
by isolating x² on one side, to obtain 𝑥² = 𝑑 and taking the square roots of each
side. This process is called Extracting the Square Root.

PROBLEM: A square tile has an area of 144 cm². How long is each side of the tile?

EQUATION: Area = s²

144 = s²

Solution: s² = 144

√𝑠² = ±√144 Find the square root of 144

s = ± 12 Simplify
s = 12 and s = −12 Split ± into + or –

The solutions are 12 or -12 but we take only the positive root since it involves
length of the sides of a tile.
EXAMPLE 2 : Solve 2x² = 8

2x² = 8
1 1
( 2 ) 2x 2 = 8 ( 2 ) Apply multiplication property of
equality.
𝑥² = 4

Find the square root of 4

√x 2 = ±√4
x = ±2 Split into + or –

The roots are x = 2 and x = −2

EXAMPLE 3: Solve 3(x − 4)2 = 21

3(x − 4)2 = 21
1 1
( ) 3(x − 4)2 = 21 ( )
3 3 Apply multiplication property of equality
2
(x − 4) = 7
√(x − 4)2 = ±√7 Find the square root each side of the
x − 4 = ±√7 equation
𝑥 − 4 + 4 = 4 ± √7 Add 4 on both sides
𝑥 = 4 ± √7
Split the + and -
𝑥 = 4 + √7 or 𝑥 = 4 − √7

The roots are irrational

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1: PRACTICE
A. Directions: Solve the given problem carefully equations using the square root
method. Write your complete solution using the square root method.

1. 11x² + 14 = 47 Solution ____________________________

____________________________

2. (x − 5)2 − 4 = 0 Solution ____________________________

___________________________

3. (x + 1)2 = 6 Solution _____________________________

Keep Practicing
Direction: Use square root method to solve the equations in column A. Match the
equation with its roots in column B and DECODE the corresponding letters to
answer the trivia.

TRIVIA: It is a square grids with a special arrangement of numbers in

them. These numbers are special because every row, column and diagonal
adds up to the same number. They were also used by Arab astrologers in
the 9th century to help work out horoscopes.

A B
• GI 1,13
1. 5 − x2 = 4 1
2. (x − 7)² = 36 • CSQ ±2
3. 4x 2 + 10 = 11 • RES ±√7
4. 2(x − 2)² = 18 • UA -1,5
5. x2 − 6 = 1 • MA ±1

ANSWER:____________________________

Can you tell what is the “magic number” in the magic square above?
ASSESSMENT: TEST YOURSELF
A. Direction: Solve and check. Use the square root method in your solution.

1. Adriel is making a square game board. He cut the game board from a
square piece of wood, as shown. The area of the game board is 64
square inches. What is the area of the original piece of wood?

x in. Solution:

5 in.
x in.

WRAP UP

The Square Root Principle

Any quadratic equation of the form 𝑥² = 𝑐 , where 𝑐 ≥ 0, has 𝑥 = √𝑐 or 𝑥 = −√𝑐 .

It is important to indicate the plus and minus sign when getting square roots.

PERFORMANCE TASK: Use a 100 square inches of cardboard material. Create

your own Magic Square.
VALUING

Journal Writing:

If the equation is in the form (𝑎𝑥)2 = 𝑑, the simplest way to solve it is by square
root method. Solutions are not always rational, because when number on the left
side is not a perfect square the roots become irrational. How is life similar to
rational and irrational roots? Are you an irrational thinker or rational thinker?
