Product of a Binomial and a Trinomial
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Product of a

Binomial and a Trinomial!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed

by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-in-
Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in
partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma.
Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using
the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional
resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Product of a

Binomial and a Trinomial!

PRETEST

Directions: Read each of the following carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. How many terms is the product of (x + 2) (x2 - 2x + 4)?
A. 6 terms B. 5 terms C. 4 terms D. 2 terms

2. Multiply the expressions (x + 1) (x2 - x + 1). What is the result?

A. x3 + x + 1 B. x3 + 1 C. x3 - x + 1 D. x3 – 1

3. Which of the factors give the product of (a3 + 125)?

A. (a2 – 5a + 25) and (a + 5)
B. (a2 + 5a + 25) and (a + 5)
C. (a2 – 5a + 25) and (a - 5)
D. (a2 + 5a + 25) and (a – 5)

4. Expressions (2x + 4) and (4x2 - 8x + 16) is multiplied by using distributive

property, what is the product?
A. 8x3 – 64 C. 8x3 –32x2 – 64x + 64
B. 8x + 64
3 D. 8 x3 +32x2 + 64x + 64

5. What should be multiplied to (x - 3) to get (x3 – 27).

A. (x2 + 3x - 9) C. (x2 - 3x + 9)
B. (x2 +3x + 9) D. (x2 - 3x - 9)

RECAP

Before we continue learning how to multiply polynomials, let’s find out how much you
have learned so far. Find the product of each of the following:
1. (x2 + 2x - 3) (x – 3) =
2. (y – 3)3 =
Remember:
When you multiply two polynomials, distribute each term of one polynomial to
each term of the other polynomial.
We can multiply polynomials in a vertical format just like we are multiplying
two numbers.
Solutions:
1. (x2 + 2x - 3)
X (x – 3)__ Multiply each term.
-3x2 - 6x + 9
x3 + 2X2 - 3x_____ Add the partial product.
𝐱 𝟑 − 𝐱 𝟐 − 𝟗𝐱 + 𝟗

2. (y – 3)3 = (𝑦)3 + 3(𝑦)2 (-3) + 3𝑦(−3)2 + (−3)3

= 𝐲 𝟑 - 9y2 + 27y - 27
Solution:
a. Find the cube of each term.
(𝑦)3 = 𝑦 3 , (−3)3 = -27

b. The second term is three times the product of the square of the first term
and the second term.
3(𝑦)2 (-3) = 3(y2) (-3)
= (3y2) (-3)
= -9y2

c. The third term is three times the product of the square of the second term
and the first term.
3𝑦(−3)2 = 3( y )(-3)(-3)
= 3y(9)
= 27y

Therefore, (y – 3)3 = 𝐲 𝟑 - 9y2 + 27y - 27

LESSON

We learned in the previous lesson that multiplying a trinomial by a binomial

gave a resulting product of having four terms. Observe the product of a binomial and
a trinomial if it will always give a product of four terms.
Examples:

1. Find the product of (𝑥 + 2) (𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 4).

Solution:
Use Distributive Property, multiply each term of a binomial by each term of a
trinomial to get the product.

simplify

(x + 2) (x 2 − 2x + 4) = x(x 2 ) + x(−2x) + x(4) 𝐱 𝟑 − 𝟐𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟒𝐱

= + 2 (x 2 ) + 2(−2x) + 2(4) 𝟐𝐱 𝟐 − 𝟒𝐱 + 𝟖

𝐱 𝟑 + 𝟎𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟎𝐱 + 𝟖
Answer: 𝐱𝟑 + 𝟖

2. Multiply (2x − 3) by (4x 2 + 6x + 9).

Solution:

(2x − 3) (4x 2 + 6x + 9) = 2x(4x 2 ) + 2x(6x) + 2x(9) 8𝐱 𝟑 + 𝟏𝟐𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟏𝟖𝐱

= − 3 (4x 2 ) − 3(6x) − 3(9) − 𝟏𝟐𝐱 𝟐 − 𝟏𝟖𝐱 − 𝟐𝟕

-
𝟖𝒙𝟑 + 𝟎𝒙𝟐 + 𝟎𝒙 − 𝟐𝟕

Answer: 𝟖𝒙𝟑 − 𝟐𝟕

3. What trinomial should be multiplied by ( x – 3) to get x 3 − 27.

Solution:

x 3 − 27 = ( x – 3) (x 2 + 3x + 9)

Answer: (𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟑𝐱 + 𝟗)

Can you see the pattern on how to get the product of a binomial and a trinomial.

Now, it’s your turn to try and answer some activities.
