IV. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it: 5 X 1 = 05
Propaganda is a systematic effort to influence people’s opinions. Propaganda is not concerned
with what is good or bad, true or false. Propagandists simply want people to believe the messages. The
word ‘propaganda’ may seem relevant only in political arena. But this can be applied in advertising too.
Every day we see slogans, commercials, trademarks etc., in newspapers, magazines, on television etc.,
Studies tell us that on an average, each of us is exposed to over five hundred different advertisements in
a day. Card stacking is one method of propaganda. Here propagandists may tell half-truths, distort
evidence or divert attention from one issue to another. Advertisers use ‘weasel words.’ These are small
words. They usually slip right past us. But it makes a lot of difference between reality and illusion. The
best example of shampoos – ‘Helps control Dandruff’. But audience interprets this as ‘stops’ dandruff.

Rivers have played an important and life-sustaining role in human societies for thousands of
years. Many of the world's great cities lie on the banks of a great river. We love our rivers and we abuse
them also. We use them as a source of water, for food, for transportation, for recreation, as defences, as
a source of power to drive machinery, and as a means of disposing waste. Rivers continue to be a very
important source of food for societies around the world. Apart from being a rich source of fish, rivers
indirectly support agriculture with the supply of water for crops. Rivers carry water and nutrients around
the Earth. River deltas shelter many different species of wildlife. Insects, mammals and birds use the
delta for their homes and for food.
