Question 1 – 7 Marks

Question 2 – 6 Marks

Question 3 – 5 Marks

Question 4 – 8 Marks

Question 5 – 6 Marks

pg. 1
Answer One Question
1. Explain individually how biological productivity, dilution and preservation of organic matter
contribute to source rock formation and its quality (6 Marks)

OR

2. With respect to the Guyana-Suriname Basin, Identify and briefly discuss the following:
a) Name, age, geochemical properties and maturity trend of the main suspected source rock (4
Marks)
b) The main reason for the shift in sand dominated sediment supply to the basin in the Tertiary
to being clay dominated and the impacts on the carbonate platforms (2 Marks)

pg. 2
SECTION B

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. Part a. Label the zones of the marine environment identified by the arrows in the diagram
below. List the features associated with Zone 2 and Zone 4 (3 Marks)

Cross section of the marine depositional environment

Part b. The outcrop below depicts a sedimentary package where boulders are interbedded with
sands and muds.

I. Comment briefly on the degree of sorting in this strata and on the degree of rounding of
the larger grains. [2 Marks]
II. In which continental depositional environment was this sedimentary package likely
deposited? Give reasons to support your choice. [2 Marks]

pg. 3
2. You are required to conduct an assessment of play potential using the cross section below.
(6 Marks Total)

Print or redraw the diagram and identify the following

a) Potential source rock/s (0.5 Mark)

b) Identify a possible seal and explain its required properties (1.5 Mark)
c) Two stratigraphic traps (1 Mark)
d) Two different types of structural traps – (1 Mark)
e) Migration pathway – explain the possible migration pathways – (2 Marks)

3. Given the seismic response section below, calculate the depth to the base of Layer 3
showing all workings. (5 marks)

pg. 4
4. Use the logs below to answer the following questions. Note that log AT 90 is deep resistivity,
AT60 is intermediate/transition zone and AT10 is shallow resistivity.

a) Identify from the log and explain at which depth is there likely to be a washout in the well.
Give one reason why such a washout may occur (2 Marks)
b) Determine the average shale volume of the formation at depth 764m (2 Marks)
c) Identify and justify (using at least 3 logs) the depth range in which the reservoir is likely to
be found. Calculate the average porosity using the bulk density log. (4 Marks)

pg. 5
5. The Map below represents the top structure map of a reservoir showing its elevation over
the field. The highest elevation of the structure is 138m TVDSS. The trap is filled to spill with
oil at 200m TVDSS. The reservoir is 90m thick. Calculate the STOIIP volume of the
hydrocarbon bearing section of the reservoir given the following information: (6 Marks)

a. Area of 140m contour = 0.3km2

b. Area of 160m contour = 2km2
c. Area of 180m contour = 4km2
d. Area of 200m contour = 10km2
