Dr Vince’s Physics Advanced level Test: Grade 12, Chapter 1 (24_01_01)
Time allowed: 86 min; Answer ALL Questions: Pass ≥ 86 %, Distinction ≥ 95 %
1. Fill in the blanks. [10 marks]
(i) The ________ force changes the speed of a rotating body.
(ii) The _______ force makes a body to be moving in a circle.
(iii) The direction of the change in velocity of a body in uniform circular motion is ________ of the circle.
(iv) The direction of the acceleration of a body in uniform circular motion is ________ of the circle.
(v) If the speed of a point 1 cm from the centre of the rotating body is 1 m s-1, then the speed of a point 2
cm from the centre is _______.
(vi) If the angular speed of a point 1 cm from the centre of the rotating body is 1 rad s-1, then the speed of a
point 2 cm from the centre is _______.
(vii) The direction of the net force acting on a body in uniform circular motion is ___________.
(viii) The angular acceleration of a body in uniform circular motion is _________.
(ix) The tangential acceleration of a body in uniform circular motion is _________.
(x) The ___________ acceleration is present in both uniform and non-uniform circular motion.
2. Are the following statements True (or) False? [10 marks]
(i) The rotation of the earth about its own axis is circular motion.
(ii) The distance between two points on an elastic body is always the same.
(iii) All the particles of a rotating rigid body undergo circular motion about a common axis.
(iv) The angular speed of a rotating body is changed by the tangential speed.
(v) To start a body to rotate, a torque is required.
(vi) To start a body to rotate, a tangential force is required.
(vii) To decrease the speed of a rotating body, a tangential force is required.
(viii) Angular velocity is the rate of change of angular displacement with respect to time.
(ix) An object revolving in a circle is continuously accelerating, even when the speed remains constant.
(x) The direction of the net force acting on a body in non-uniform circular motion is toward the centre.
3. (i) In circular motion, how is a tangential acceleration produced? Is tangential acceleration always occur?
Explain. (ii) A boy steps on a merry-go-round which has a radius of 4 m and is at rest. It starts accelerating at
a constant rate up to an angular velocity of 8 rad s-1 in 20 s. What is the distance traversed by the boy? What is
the angular acceleration? Is there tangential acceleration? [10 marks]
4. (i) Under what condition the angular acceleration of a rotating object is equal to zero? Are there angular velocity,
tangential velocity, and tangential acceleration if the angular acceleration of the rotating body is zero? (ii) A ball is
whirled with constant angular acceleration. Starting from rest, it attains an angular velocity of 25 rad s-1 after
traversing an angular displacement of 50 rad. What is the angular acceleration of the ball? What is the time taken? If
the radius of the circle is 50 cm, find the tangential acceleration. [10 marks]
5. (i) Why is the centripetal acceleration produced in a circular motion? What type of motion has centripetal
acceleration? What type of motion has radial acceleration? What is the angle between radial acceleration and
tangential acceleration? (ii) A centrifuge has a radius of 20 cm, and decelerates from a maximum rotational rate
of 5400 rpm to rest in 10 s under a constant angular acceleration. It is rotating counter clockwise. What is the
resultant acceleration of a point at the tip of the centrifuge at 5 s? [10 marks]
