1. SCOPE :
This procedure covers the work method for lowering in of pipe section from ROW Welding position to
trench bottom.
2. REFERENCE :
3. LOWERING RESPONSIBILITY :
During lowering of welded and PE coated pipeline, the site in charge shall supervise the lower in operation
fully and the surveyor shall check pipeline cover as per PJPL (India) specification& VCS specification.
4. METHOD :
a) All work shall be carried out as per VCS Lowering shall start only after completing all joint coating
and obtaining approval from PJPL/ VCS in part A of pipe book. Pipe book part A shall be submitted
to PJPL/ VCS in advance for approval for lowering operation.
b) In all cases where rock is encountered in the bottom of the trench, at least 300mm sand/ soil padding
shall be done.
c) The thickness of the compacted padding shall not be less than 150mm. In those areas that are to be
padded, the trench shall be at least 150mm deeper than otherwise required, and evenly and
sufficiently padded to keep the pipe, when in place, at least 150mm above bottom of Excavated
trench.
d) After satisfactory completion of trench bottom, the level shall be checked to get the required
minimum cover. If require further dressing of the trench shall be done to get the desired cover.
Minimum cover of 1.2 Mtrs. shall be meeting specified requirement as per PJPL;/VCS specification.
e) Trench shall be wider particularly at the bend, to avoid tension in pipe section during lowering. After
lowering in the pipeline shall be completely stress free in the trench.
f) Where water is present, no lowering shall be permitted. However, water shall be drain out to the
extent to make visual inspection possible of the bed on which the pipeline is to be rest. Following such
inspection, the presence of water is permitted which cannot be removed provided floating of pipeline
will not take place.
g) Standard pipe cradle can be used and a demonstration shall be carried out that pipe coating is not
damaged. Alternatively nonabrasive pipe belt (with 60mm width) to be used and care must be taken
while removing the belt. Wire rope slings or other material which may damage the PE coating shall
not be permitted to the lift the pipes. No slings shall be put around the field coated joints.
h) Before lowering in, a complete check by calibrated full circle holiday detector for pipe coating ( PE
coating ) and for field joint coating shall be carried out at 25 KVA, the Damages if any observed
during the examination shall be repaired as per the approved procedure and re-holiday check shall
be carried out in presence of PJPL/VCS.
i) Before lowering in, short completed sections of the pipeline shall be cleaned with compressed air
driven cup Pig or Foam pig in order to remove all dirt, etc. from the inside of pipe sections. In case
such cleaning is proposed by Contractor after lowering, the Contractor shall obtain approval from
the Company.
j) Pipe layer crane is required minimum 03 Nos Pipe layer shall be used for holding the pipeline in
gentle curve maintaining the minimum elastic bending radius as specified in the job standard. The
pipeline must be laid without interruption of whole section length available. Contractor has to submit
calculation notes for lowering of pipeline section.
k) Immediately after lowering level of pipe to be checked with leveling instruments, same to be
recorded for as-built.
l) End caps to be provided at the end of the open ends of the lowered pipe section. Whenever the pipe
sections are left open at intervals to be tied in at a later date under road, rail roads, marshy locations
etc shall be capped with a securely closed metal caps to prevent entry of dirt, water or any foreign
matter into the pipe section.
