Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Trigonometric Ratios (SOHCAHTOA)

I. Objectives

At the end of the discussion, the students will be able to:

a. Identify the hypotenuse, adjacent side, and opposite side of an acute angle in
a right triangle;
b. determine the trigonometric ratios for a given angle in a right triangle;
c. solve problems involving trigonometric ratios of right triangle.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Trigonometric Ratios: Sine, Cosine, Tangent (SOHCAHTOA)

Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9. First Edition 2014.

Materials: Whiteboard, eraser, marker, laptop, and power point presentation.

III. Lesson Proper/ Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary activities
I. Prayer
Good Morning class! Good Morning Sir!

Before anything else, kindly bow

your heads and feel the presence of
the Lord. Student A, will you please (Student A will lead the prayer)
lead the prayer.

II. Class Management

Before we start kindly pick up the
pieces of paper under your chairs (The students will arrange their chairs
and arrange your chairs properly.
properly.)

Yes, Sir.
Done?

III. Checking of Attendance

Student B, is there any absentee for
today? None, Sir.
That’s good.

IV. Review of the Past Lesson

Before we start our new topic, let us
test if you really understand our
past lesson. This activity called
“Fill Me Up” and I will tell short
description of each word, now your
task is to guess or identify the word
that being describe.
1. It is a polygon with three
corners and three sides. Answer: Triangle
2. A triangle in which one of the
interior angles is 90 degree. Answer: Right Triangle
3. It is the side of a right triangle Answer: Hypotenuse
opposite the right angle. It is the
longest side of any such
triangle. Answer: Adjacent Side
4. It is a side that is next to or
shares a vertex with another
side. Answer: Ratio
5. It is a comparison of two
quantities using division.
None Sir
Very good! Now class, do you have
any question or clarification
regarding our last topic?
B. Presentation/Lesson Proper

1) Motivation
Now that we are done with Recap, I
want you to observed this Picture.

What did you observe class? A ladder that form a Right Triangle.

Very Good! This picture represent a

right triangle.

2) Discussion

(The students will do the “Capture It”

activity as instructed.)

Yes, Sir we did!

B. Presentation/Lesson Proper

1) Motivation Sir I think our lesson for today has

Now that we are done with something to do with triangles.
Recap, I want you to observed
this Picture.

What did you observe class?

Very Good! This picture

represent a right triangle.

Very good!

Our lesson for today will deal with

triangles specifically with right Sir I think this is used to measure triangles.
triangles. We are going to talk
about the three main
functions/ratios of trigonometry.
But let us define first what is
trigonometry. Who has an idea what
trigonometry means? Yes, Student
D.

Thank you very much.

Trigonometry came from the Greek
word trigonon meaning “triangle”
plus the word metron which means
measure so, trigonometry simply
means the measurement of the
triangle. Now let us have the three
main functions or ratios of
trigonometry. But before that let us
identify first the parts or sides of a
right triangle which we are going to
use when we have the trigonometric
ratios.

This given is a right triangle having

an angle at one point. Let us
identify what is the opposite side,
adjacent side to the angle given and
the hypotenuse.
A
Ɵ

C Ɵ B
If the given angle is in point B what
side is the opposite to the angle?
Yes, Student E.
Sir I think the side AC.
Very good! The opposite of the
angle B is the side AC. How about
when we say adjacent? What do
you think is the side wherein it is
adjacent to the angle? Yes, Student
F.
Sir the side CB.

Very Good. Now it is pretty

obvious that the remaining part is
the hypotenuse of the triangle.
Don’t forget that hypotenuse is the
longest side of a triangle.

Yes, sir

Now since you already know how

to identify the opposite, adjacent
and hypotenuse of the right triangle
let us proceed to the three main Yes, sir!
trigonometric functions which are
the Sine, Cosine and Tangent.

Sine of an angle is equal to

opposite side over hypotenuse.
Cosine of an angle is equal to
adjacent side over the hypotenuse.
And the tangent of an angle is
equal to opposite side over the
adjacent side.

For you to easily remember these

we have the acronym
SOHCAHTOA.
Yes sir!
Is it clear class?

Very good!

Okay let us try to solve for the sine,

cosine and tangent of the given
triangle.
Example #1:
A

8
2

C Ɵ B
4

Let us identify first the measures of

the given right triangle. What will
be the measure of our opposite side Sir it is 2.
of the given angle? Yes, Student
G?

Very good! How about the adjacent Sir it is 4.

side? Yes, Student H?

And the value of hypotenuse is? It is 8 sir.

Yes, Student I?

Well said. Since we know now the

measures of the three parts let us
now use the SOHCAHTOA in
order to get the value of the three
functions.

Let us solve first for the sine. It is opposite over hypotenuse sir.
Again, what is the ratio in getting
the sine? Yes, Student J?

Very good! So to get the sine we

will use the measure of our
opposite side which is 2 and the
measure of our hypotenuse which
is 8. So in numerical terms we will
get 2/8 then simplify it and it will Yes, sir.
be 1/4 .

Did you get that class?

The ratio to solve the cosine is adjacent
Very good! Now any volunteer to over hypotenuse. The measure of our
solve for the cosine? Yes ,Student adjacent side is 4 and the measure of the
K. hypotenuse is 8. So if you are going to put
these two together the result will be 1/2.
Very well said. And for the last
one, the tangent. Any volunteer? The ratio in solving for the tangent is
Yes, Student L. opposite over adjacent. The measure of
our opposite side is 2 and the value of the
adjacent side is 4 so if you put the two
together you will have ½.

Very Good! So do you have any

question regarding this topic?
None sir!
If you don’t have any question let
us have an activity which will serve
as your quiz or evaluation.. Yes sir!

3) Generalization

(The teacher will ask few questions and the student will sum it up to know if the students
really understand the lesson and provide alternatives if not.)
