SECTION A (64 MARKS)

Answer all the questions.


1. Diagram 1 shows a sector OPR with centre O. QR is the tangent to the circle at point R and
OPQ is a straight line.

(a) ∠POR in radian, [4]
(b) the area of the shaded region. [2]

2. Diagram 2 shows a straight line ST which meets the straight line AB at the point E. Point S
lies on the y-axis.

(a) Write down the equation of AB in the form of intercepts. [1]

(b) Given that 2AE = EB, find the coordinates of E. [2]

(c) Given that ST is perpendicular to AB, find the y-intercept of ST. [3]
3. A quadratic equation 𝑥 2 + 4(3𝑥 + 𝑘) = 0, where k is a constant has roots p and 2p, p ≠ 0.
(a) Find the value of p and of k. [4]
(b) Hence, form the quadratic equation which has roots 𝑘 + 1 and 𝑘 − 6. [2]

4. (a) Given that log 3 𝐾 − log 9 𝐿 = 2,express K in terms of L. [3]

(b) The area of a rectangle is (8 + √10) cm2. One of its sides has a length of (√5 + √2) cm.
Determine the length of the other side in the form of (𝑎√5 + 𝑏√2) cm. Hence, state the
values of a and b. [4]

7. (a) Diagram 3 shows the shaded region bounded by the curve 𝑦 = 4 − 𝑥 2 , straight line
𝑦 = 𝑘, x-axis and y-axis. When the shaded region is revolved through 360o at the y-axis,
the volume generated is 6𝜋 units3. Calculate the value of k. [4]

8. Given that …, −23, x, −11…. are three consecutive terms of an arithmetic progression.
(a) Find
(i) the value of x, [2]
(ii) common difference of the progression. [1]
(b) Hence, if x is the 18th term of the progression, find the first term of the progression. [2]

9. (a) Diagram 4 shows the diameter of baking cans produced by a manufacturer are normally
distributed with a mean of 23 cm and a standard deviation of 0.45cm. Given that the area
of the shaded region if 0.2473, find the value of m. [3]

10. It is given that 𝑓: 𝑥 → 2𝑥 − 3 and 𝑔−1 : 𝑥 → 𝑥 − 4 , 𝑥 ≠ 4. Find

(a) the value of p if 𝑔−1 (𝑝) = 𝑓(−3). [2]


(b) the value if x 𝑓𝑔(𝑥) = 9. [4]

12. (a) By using the trigonometric rations of special angles, find the value of

(b) Find all the angle between 0 and 2𝜋 that satisfy the equation

(c) Given f(x) = P sin Qx + R for 0𝑜 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 360𝑜 . The amplitude of the graph is 4, its period

13. It is given that 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 𝑘 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 1 − ℎ𝑥, where h and k are constants.

(a) Find the value of h and of k if 𝑔(5) = −14 and 𝑔𝑓(𝑥) = 10 − 6𝑥. [3]

(b) Find the values of m if 𝑓𝑓 −1 (𝑚 − 2) = 𝑚 , 𝑚 ≠ 0. [2]

(c) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = ⌈𝑔𝑓(𝑥)⌉ for −1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3. [3]

14. In Diagram 5, the straight lines AB and CD intersect at point M. The equations of the straight
lines AB and CD are 𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 7 = 0 and 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 2 = 0. The point 𝑁(0, −3) divides the
line segment PQ in the ratio 2 : 1. The coordinates of point P are (−4, −6).
