Ready to Launch!

This self-learning package will introduce you to the concept of scientific attitudes and
basic science process skills. This will enable you to demonstrate the different scientific atti-
tudes and basic science process skills that will help you meet the basic human needs and im-
prove living standards.
Scientific attitude can be defined as, “open-mindedness, a desire for accurate
knowledge, confidence in procedures for seeking knowledge and the expectation that the so-
lution of the problem will come through the use of verified knowledge”.
Scientific attitudes are the most important outcomes of science teaching. Though some
people view the scientific attitude as the by-product of teaching science, yet a majority of the
people consider them as equally important as the knowledge aspect. Science should be taught
directly and systematically because developing scientific attitude has several characteristic fea-
tures that distinguish it from other attitudes. This includes curiosity, intellectual honesty, criti-
cal mindedness, open-mindedness, skepticism, objectivity, perseverance. This self-learning
package will help you explore the different scientific attitudes and recognize its importance in
understanding Research.

Aim at the Target!

This section will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you are expected to
learn .
SELF-LEARNING PACKAGE IN This self-learning package generally aims to:

RESEARCH 7
Recognize and show scientific attitudes (SSP-RS7SA-Ia-c-1)
Furthermore, it specifically aims to:
1.Identify scientific attitudes in a given situation;
2.Show scientific attitudes in a given situation;

IMPORTANCE OF SCIENTIFIC Try This!

ATTITUDES AND BASIC SCIENCE This part includes an activity that aims to check what you already know about the les-
son to take.
PROCESS SKILLS RECOGNITION Instruction: The following are the list of attitudes that a scientist must possess. Come
and discover by arranging the scrambled letters to form the magic word.

In this portion, a new lesson will be introduced to you in various ways such as an activity, a
situation, PowerPoint presentations, and videos.
4. Alexander Graham failed on his attempt to send
Activity sound through wire in his first two years of experiment.
Direction: Click the link for the slides about “The Scientific Attitude.” His failures did not stop him in pursuing his goal. He
quoted, “The only difference between success and failure
is the ability to take action.”

5. Before Gregor Mendel, theories for a hereditary

mechanism were based largely on logic and speculation,
not on experimentation. Mendel’s success can be at-
tributed in part to his classic experimental approach.
He chose his experimental organism well and performed many controlled experiments to col-
lect data. From his results, he developed brilliant explanatory hypotheses and went on to test
these hypotheses experimentally. Mendel’s methodology established a prototype for genetics
that is still used today for gene discovery and understanding the genetic properties of inher-
itance.

Abstraction and Generalization

Perseverance • A good Scientist should not give up.
Self- Confidence • A scientist is confident and ready to depend his work, especially if he
knows that he is right.
Scientific Intuition • Scientist should have a gut feeling to intuitively predict that something will
happen such as a disaster. • This intuition is based on scientific training and understanding of
scientific principles, unlike a fortune teller’s prediction based on tarot cards.
Aptitude for Serendipity • Most scientific breakthroughs came out of serendipity. Serendipity
means unexpectedly discovering or finding things.

Application
This section provides an activity that will help you transfer your new knowledge or skill
in real-life situations or concerns.

Direction: Read and understand the situation below. Write your answers on the space pro-
vided after the question. Reinforcement & Enrichment

You are asked an errand by your mother to go to the store nearby. What will be the
best thing for you to do? Identify the scientific attitude that you will show.

Assess Your Learning

This is a task which aims to evaluate your level of mastery in achieving the learning competency

Direction: Identify the characteristics of the scientist / researcher in the following situations. Type
your answer on the blank provided after every question. Choose your answer from the options given.

_____1. When Dr. Ramon Gustilo, a Filipino orthopedics surgeon, got expose to orthopedics, he felt
the need to improve the facilities and treatments used. He came up with inventions that revolutionized
the way bones, hips, and joints are replaced.
Critical thinking Perseverance Open-mindedness Creativity
_____2. Dr. Julian Banson, a Filipino scientist dedicated most of his life by doing several researches on
local materials, particularly the coconut, as an alternative source of fuels. He worked hard so that he
could devise a means of extracting residual coconut oil by chemical process.
Intellectual Honesty Curiosity Perseverance Objectivity
_____3. When Thomas Alva Edison was young, his mother could not find him for days. Later, he was
found shivering in the barn while sitting on the basket with unhatched eggs. When he was asked why he
was doing it he said, “If hen can hatch eggs by sitting on them for days, maybe I can also do it.”
Curiosity Skepticism Perseverance Open-mindedness
_____4. When a researcher provides explanation based on facts, what scientific attitude is being prac-
ticed by her?
Innovative Critical Thinker Serendipity Objectivity
_____5. When a researcher does not claim the works of others as his own. He is showing what kind
of scientific attitude.
Intellectual Honesty Scientific Intuition Suspending Judgment Self-confidence
