How to do review of a journal

article
What are different types of articles
in a medical journal
• original research article
• Reviews (Scientific, meta-analysis)
• Short (Rapid) Communications
• Case Reports
• Clinical photographs
• Letters to the Editor
Standard Structure of Journal
Article
• Most articles in medical journals follow
“IMRAD” structure which is as follows
• I=Introduction(& Abstract)
• M=Methods
• R=Results
• D=Discussion(& Conclusion)
• List of references quoted in text of article
is always given at end.
Abstract
Provides a Summary of the key points of
the article.
Contents are
Research question addressed, the design
and methods employed, the results
obtained and some interpretation of them
(a conclusion)
Introduction
A survey of the relevant background for a
study, a context for the study, and the
hypothesis, usually contains a review of
prior studies related to the same topic.
Methods
• This section provides detailed information
about the research instrument used,
subjects, procedures and the approach to
data analysis.
• As a general rule, enough information should
be provided to allow another group of
investigators replicate the study.
Results
• Data is summarized in this section,
and relationships among variables
and/ or differences among groups
are reported.
Discussion
The ways in which the study’s results
coincide with the hypothesis and
previous studies is discussed, as well
as suggestions for the need for further
studies on the topic.
Discussion (con.)
• Usually starts with mention of the most
important finding(s) of this study
• It also states whether findings are
consistent/ inconsistent with previous work
(cited). If inconsistent, this may be due to
errors or shortcomings of previous work or
use of a different set of assumptions within
which to interpret findings in the current
study.
Discussion (con.)
• It also mentions Strengths of study design,
Weaknesses of the current study
• Finally it states implications of study
findings for current practice

Objectives or Hypotheses and Study Population

• What are the objectives of the study or the questions
to be answered, or the hypotheses to be tested?
• Objectives/Hypotheses/Study Population should
be clearly stated

Methods section should clearly state

• Study design(depends upon research question)
• study sample,sampling methods(how study sample was
selected),description of control groups(if they are
needed according to study design)
• Sample size
• Method of data collection

• Ethical considerations(specifically issue of consent from study

subjects and whether it is appropriately dealt with)

Results section
Presentation of Findings
findings should be presented clearly, objectively,
and in sufficient detail to enable the reader to
judge them for himself

findings should be internally consistent,

i.e., the numbers should add up properly

Analysis

• methods of statistical analysis should be

appropriate to the source and nature of the
data
• the analysis should be correctly interpreted

Conclusions
• conclusions should be justified by the
findings

• They should be relevant to the questions

or hypotheses posed by the investigators
Tips for Reading a Journal article

• Start with the Abstract for an overview.

• Read the first paragraph of the Introduction to get a
sense of the issue. Go to the last paragraph to read the
hypothesis.
• Skim the Discussion to see how the study turned out.
• Now, read the Methods section carefully and plan to
reread it, even a couple of times to digest it all.
• Then, read the Results section. You may want to turn to
the Discussion section for clarification of what the
reported statistics demonstrate. Try to get a good idea of
how the hypotheses were tested.
