What do we need
copyreading for?
Also known as copyediting, copyreading refers
to multiple readings of a copy to correct errors
in spelling, mechanics, grammar and usage. As
copyreader (or copy editor). You also need to
make sure that the copy conforms to your
school publication’s established style. (in the
absence of your own stylebook, it is preferred
that you consult AP Stylebook.)
Content editing is what copyreaders can do that
proofreaders cannot. Proofreaders can indicate
corrections regarding spelling, mechanics, grammar,
usage and style, but they are restricted to such. Thus, it
is the solitary role of the copyreader to check for
consistency of the content and to look out for untrue
and offensive statements.
How do we copyread or
copyedit?

Before actually starting with copyreading

process, you need to consider certain things
first.
• Read through the
copy before
making your
marks.
• Put slug line on the
upper right-hand corner
of the sheet.
• Indicate the order of
paragraphs by putting a
number on the left side of
each
• The end mark # or 30
signifies that the edit
is done.
• Numbers 1-9 are spelled out while numbers 10
and above are written in figures.

Examples
Seven dolls
2000 participants
EXCEPTIONS
• Dates and addresses are always in figures.
Example: Blk 2, Lot 4, Carlos St.
• Proper nouns
Example: 7 Up, 3D
• If a sentence begins with numbers spell it out.
Example: Two hundred and twenty-five
students signed the petition.
• Events: 1st-9th are allowed.
• Look for misspelled words.

Here in the Philippines, American

English variation is used not British.

Not advisable: colour, favourable,

programme
Commonly used: color, favorable, program
• Capitalization
Capitalized titles before names. Use
lowercase for titles or positions after the name.
Examples:
DepEd Sec. Armin Luistro
Armin Luistro, DepEd secretary
• Abbreviation
- Spell out Dept., gov’t and other
abbreviations
-Abbreviations Jr. and Sr. are allowed in
names.
Examples:
Engr. Manuel Lopez
Engineer Lopez
12 Lopez St.,
Lopez Street
• Acronyms
- Acronyms with four characters are usually
capitalized. Those with five or more follow sentence
case pattern.

Example: DSWD, Comelec, Pagasa

-When an acronym appears for the first in an
article, it is written after the meaning and is enclosed in
parentheses.

FUNCTIONS OF
HEADLINE
• to attract readers;
• To tell the story (in summary);
• To add variety of type, and to break the
monotony in a sea of type; and,
• to grade the news—big type is used for more
important news while small type is used for less
important.
TIPS IN HEADLINING
• First, read the story for general
meaning.
• Clues to the headline are usually
found in the lead.
What happened?
Who did it?
How did it happened?
• Use the shortest words possible
cop- policeman
nab- arrest
mishap- accident
up- increase
down- decrease
thief- robber
• Have a subject and a verb. Avoid stating verb.
The headline might sound as if it were giving
order.
• Use the present tense and active voice of the
verb.

Wrong: Dela Cruz topped bar exam

Correct: Dela Cruz tops bar exam
• Omit helping verb. If the verb is in the
passive voice, use only the past participle.

Wrong: Drug pushers are nabbed

Correct: Drug pushers nabbed
• Do not use period at the end of the headline.
• Omit article (a, an, the)
• Use comma “,” instead of “and”.
• Use semicolon “;” to separate sentences.
• Use single quotation ‘’
• Always give the source of a quote. A dash or a
colon may be used if quotations are not
necessary.
PNOY: No to corruption
‘No to corruption’- PNOY
• Use down-style. Only the first word and
the proper nouns are capitalized. People
are used to reading in a sentence way;
hence, this is more readable

COE dean retires in October 2013

• Be positive. Do not use negatives in headlines.
They weaken not only your headline but also
the article.

ways.

3/25/1 (max of 30 units) or /3/1/30

“3” refers to the number of columns the headline occupies

in the paper, “25” to the font size used for headlining, and
