WHAT IS Non-ionizing radiation?

Non-ionizing (or non-ionising) radiation refers to any type of

electromagnetic radiation  that does not carry enough energy per quantum (
photon energy less than 12.4 eV) to ionize atoms or molecules—that is, to
completely remove an electron from an atom or molecule.
The usual definitions have suggested that radiation with particle or photon
energies less than 10 electronvolts (eV) be considered non-ionizing.
Non-ionizing radiation differs from ionizing radiation in the way it acts on
materials like air, water, and living tissue.
Unlike x-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation, non-ionizing radiation
does not have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and
molecules. Non-ionizing radiation can heat substances.
Nonionizing radiation has many uses but can be a health hazard, exposure
to it can cause burns, radiation sickness, cancer and genetic damage.
SOURCES
Natural origin(such as
sunlight or lightning
discharges etc)
Man-made
(eg: Radiofrequency (RF)
radiation used in many
broadcast, wireless
communication ,infrared
radiation in heat lamp ,
microwave and etc).
Types of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation
1. Near ultraviolet
radiation
2. Visible light
3. Infrared (IR) light
4. Microwave
5. Radio waves
6. Very low frequency
(VLF)
7. Extremely low
frequency (ELF)
8. Thermal radiation
9. Black-body
radiation

IS NON-IONIZING USEFUL?
Some of the medical applications may be:
Radio frequency:
1.MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
2. Supra-ventricular arrhythmia treatment
3.OSA (obstructive sleep apnea treatment)
Microwaves:
1.Tumor detection
2.BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) treatment
3.Supra-ventricular arrhythmia treatment
4.Dental caries prevention
Infrared:
1.Medical infrared thermography(MIT)
2.Tissue regeneration (especially Far IR)
3.Pain treatment
4.Fluorescence tomographic imaging (Near IR)
 Visible light
1.Optic fiber used in endoscopy
2.Dosimetry
3.Laser applications (several)
UV:
1.Psoriasis and vitiligio treatment, bilirubin removal
(especially on newborns and children). Other use can be
ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI), though this is not fully
accepted by the medical community worldwide.
Our useful devices are:
 Microwave ovens

Global positioning systems,

Cell phones,
Television stations,

FM radio

 Baby monitors

Cordless phones

garage-door openers
CB radios, and

AM radio.

Extremely low-frequency (ELF) waves that are

produced by electrical power lines and wiring.
IS NONIONIZING RADIATION
HARMFUL?
 Although considered
less dangerous than ionizing radiation,
overexposure to non-ionizing radiation
can cause health issues.
Non-ionising radiation does not penetrate deep
into the tissues but increases the risk of damage to
the skin and eyes.
Non-ionizing radiation can produce
non-mutagenic effects such as inciting thermal
energy in biological tissue that can lead to burns.
 Radiofrequency waves can cause tissue heating at
high energies and with high intensities.
Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (including
microwave and millimeter waves) to their list of
things which are possibly carcinogenic to humans.
PRINCIPLES OF RADIATION
SAFETY
The principles of radiation protection for NIR are
the same as those for ionizing radiation.
1. time,
2. distance, and
3. shielding.

The maximum exposure time during any interval

when the field intensity exceeds the guideline limit
is given by
Where,
= frequency-dependent averaging time,
F=measured field intensity, either electric or
magnetic, or power density, and
L=limiting exposure
The exact degree of attenuation s determined by the
electrical properties of the shielding material, the shield
thickness, and the frequency of the radiation.
A =3.34
Where,
A =attenuation, dB,
t =shield thickness, inches,
μ =relative (to copper) permeability,
σ =relative (to copper) conductivity, and
f =frequency, Hz.

Frequency Shielding Materials
HOW TO PROTECT RADIATION IN
OUR DALIY LIFE?
The use of protective clothing and
sunblocking creams is effective in
preventing skin damage.
Sunglasses that absorb UV light are
effective in preventing eye injury.
Radiation safety measures include
minimizing exposure time, maximizing
distance from the source, and interposing
shielding when necessary.
 Eat antioxidant-rich foods of every color,
especially cherries, blueberries,
pomegranates, yams, and sweet potatoes.
Drink six to eight 8-ounce glasses of
filtered water every day to flush and
hydrate your system.
