방향감각은 자신의 위치를 알고 길찾기를 수행하는 능력이다.[1][2] 인지지도, 공간인식, 공간인식과 관련이 있다.[3] 방향 감각은 지형적인 방향 감각 상실과 같은 뇌 손상에 의해 손상될 수 있다.

인간은 어딘가에 갈 때마다 공간지도를 만든다. 해마 내부의 세포라고 불리는 뉴런은 사람이 환경을 통과하는 동안 개별적으로 발화한다. 이것은 해마의 뉴런이 기록되었을 때 쥐에게서 처음 발견되었다. 특정 뉴런은 쥐가 환경의 특정 영역에 있을 때마다 발사된다. 이 뉴런들은 모두 같은 평면에 모이면 격자를 형성한다.

산타바바라 방향감각 스케일

방향 감각은 2002년에 고안된 자가 평가된 정신 측정 시험인 산타 [4]바바라 방향 감각 척도로 측정할 수 있다.[5] 이 척도는 운전과 같은 많은 맥락에서 방향 감각을 연구하는데 사용되어 왔다.[6]
