Glassmanor Summary
Glassmanor is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 8,919 at the 2010 census.
History
Glassmanor was originally part of the larger community of Marlow Heights, which was established in the 1950s. In the late 1960s, the area was annexed by the City of District Heights, and the name Glassmanor was adopted in the early 1970s. The name is derived from the glass factory that was located in the area.
Geography
Glassmanor is located at 38°51'17" North, 76°55'45" West (38.854722, -76.929167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Glassmanor is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of government offices, including the Prince George’s County Police Department and the Prince George’s County Fire and Rescue Department.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,919 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,845.3 people per square mile (2,639.2/km2). There were 3,323 housing units at an average density of 2,521.3/sq mi (972.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 11.45% White, 79.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.17% from other races, and 2.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.90% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 28.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.45.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
