Lansdowne Summary
Lansdowne is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,541 at the 2010 census.
History
Lansdowne was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The area was originally known as “Quaker Bottom” and was part of Baltimore County. In 1845, the area was renamed “Lansdowne” after the Earl of Lansdowne, a British statesman.
The area was largely rural until the early 20th century, when it began to be developed as a suburb of Baltimore. The first subdivision was built in 1910, and the area was incorporated as a town in 1915. The town was annexed by Baltimore County in 1918.
Geography
Lansdowne is located at 39°14′N 76°37′W (39.23, -76.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Lansdowne is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Baltimore for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 11,541 people, 4,717 households, and 3,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,741.3 people per square mile (1,058.2/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 1,179.2 per square mile (455.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
