Rosedale is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is located just east of the city of Baltimore and is part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The population of Rosedale was 22,072 at the 2010 census.
History
Rosedale was first settled in the early 19th century by German and Irish immigrants. The area was originally known as "Franklinville" and was part of Baltimore County. In 1868, the area was renamed "Rosedale" after the rose bushes that grew in the area. The area was largely rural until the 1950s when it began to be developed as a suburb of Baltimore.
Geography
Rosedale is located at 39°19'45"N 76°30'45"W (39.329167, -76.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), all land.
Economy
Rosedale is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses. The largest employer in the area is the U.S. Postal Service, which has a large distribution center in Rosedale.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 22,072 people, 8,845 households, and 5,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,093.3 people per square mile (1,967.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 2,213.3 per square mile (854.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.2% White, 24.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
