History
The area around Leonardtown was first settled in the early 17th century by English colonists. The town was founded in 1708 and named after Leonard Calvert, the first colonial governor of Maryland. The town was laid out in a grid pattern, with a central square, and was the first town in Maryland to be incorporated by the colonial legislature.
In the late 18th century, Leonardtown was a major port of entry for tobacco and other goods. It was also a center of trade for slaves. During the War of 1812, the town was the site of a major battle between the British and American forces.

There were 845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.17.
