The muddy chest is a locked chest located in the centre of the Lava Maze. It can only be opened with the muddy key. Opening the muddy chest grants a variety of rewards, which always include 5000 coins. As it is located in the Wilderness, players who have PvP toggled on from Vala should beware of player killers while looting and running back from the chest. Players who have low combat levels or less experience should be wary of aggressive Ripper Demons roaming near the path to the chest on members worlds.

Although the chest rewards items from the Wilderness shared loot table, they do not count towards the Wilderness slayer log.

Loot[edit | edit source]

The muddy chest yields different rewards when opened on free-to-play worlds as opposed to members' worlds. Besides the rewards listed below, the muddy chest also has a chance to access the Wilderness shared loot table.

Wilderness shared loot table[edit | edit source]

This chest has access to the Wilderness shared loot table, which is a tertiary drop.
Luck-enhancing items are not required to access the table, but do increase the chance of doing so, as does doing higher-level content.

    Update history[edit | edit source]

This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included – see here for how to help out!
    • patch 3 April 2023 (Update):
      • Adjusted the location of the Muddy Chest found in the Lava Maze to make the Ripper Demons more avoidable.
    • update 1 August 2022 (Update):
      • Many monsters are added to the wilderness. As a result ripper demons now spawn relatively close to the chest, making the activity much more difficult.
    • patch 15 August 2016 (Update):
      • Free players no longer receive members' objects from looting the muddy chest.

    Trivia[edit | edit source]

    • Following the Wilderness Reborn update, players had to beware of aggressive Ripper Demons roaming near the chest on members worlds. However, Jagex had said it would address the issue following complaints.[1] A patch a few months later reduced the danger, though it's still possible for Ripper Demons to attack the player when looting the chest.
