1. Kita punya kekuatan untuk mengendalikan suasana hati kita sendiri.
2. Tertawa selalu jadi solusi hebat dalam mengubah suasana hati yang buruk.
3. Setiap suasana hati yang buruk hanya bersifat sementara.
Ada 17 jenis suasana hati yang dibahas oleh buku ini.
1. Marah.
Kita mungkin termasuk orang yang pemarah jika setiap membicarakan sesuatu, kita selalu berdebat dengan teman atau keluarga. Seringkali kita merasa frustrasi dan tidak terkontrol. Kita juga merasa nggak ada seorang pun yang bisa memahami kita. Kita juga merasa kecewa dengan diri sendiri yang tidak sesuai ekspektasi.
"Marah itu mudah; setiap orang bisa melakukannya. Hanya saja masalahnya, tidak semua orang bisa marah pada orang yang tepat, dalam situasi yang tepat, pada waktu yang tepat, dan juga untuk tujuan yang tepat dengan cara yang benar."

Salah satu penyebab terbesar dari rasa marah adalah kegagalan orang lain dalam memahami apa yang kamu mau. Namun, orang lain tidak selalu dengan sengaja ingin membuat marah atau menyakiti perasaan kita. Adakalanya mereka hanya tidak sengaja melakukannya. Ketika mereka tidak memenuhi harapan kita, bisa jadi memang ada alasannya. Misal, ketika ayah kita batal melihat pertandingan penting kita, mungkin sebenarnya dia sedang kerja lembur karena atasannya terlalu tergantung padanya untuk menyelesaikan situasi kritis. Jadi, bukan karena sang ayah tidak benar-benar tertarik untuk menonton pertandingan kita.
Selain marah pada orang lain, kita juga bisa marah pada diri sendiri dan ini adalah jenis marah yang paling merusak. Jika kita marah pada seseorang, kita bisa menumpahkannya pada orang lain. Tapi jika kita marah pada diri sendiri, siapa yang bisa kita lawan?
Ketika kita marah, pikirkan: apakah kita sudah mengungkapkan kemarahan dengan benar?. Buku ini mengatakan bahwa bertengkar tidak selamanya harus berakhir jadi sesuatu yang buruk. Ternyata ada cara bertengkar dengan benar. Membicarakan sesuatu bahkan ketika pembicaraan memanas adalah cara terbaik untuk membuka diri dan mudah-mudahan bisa memecahkan kebuntuan.
Cara marah yang benar adalah:
- Menyingkirkan masalah jauh-jauh, daripada membiarkan kemarahan semakin membakar emosi. (Tapi apa maksudnya ini???)
- Memahami bahwa ada dua sisi yang berbeda dalam satu cerita yang sama.
- Berusaha untuk tetap terbuka, jujur, tenang, dan terkendali setiap kita menjelaskan alasan kekecewaannya.
- Hanya mengarahkan kemarahan pada masalah yang sedang dihadapi.
- Berusaha fokus pada akar persoalan, tanpa menyerang orang yang bersangkutan secara pribadi.
- Tidak memperburuk situasi dan membuat masalahnya jadi semakin besar.
Sedangkan cara marah yang salah adalah:
- Membiarkan diri terus marah sehingga rasa sebal menumpuk hingga akhirnya meledak.
- Memulai pertengkaran dengan menyerang secara verbal dan menyalahkan orang lain.
- Mengacuhkan kata-kata dan perasaan orang lain, dan hanya fokus pada hal yang membuatnya marah.
- Membawa-bawa persoalan masa lalu yang tidak ada hubungannya dengan masalah yang dihadapi saat ini.
- Menggunakan kata-kata seperti "selalu", dan "tidak pernah" ketika menggambarkan tingkah laku orang lain.
Kita perlu tetap berusaha mencegah amarah berubah jadi kemarahan yang berbahaya. Ini 10 caranya:
1. Bernapas. Ambil napas yang dalam dan pelan sambil menghitung sampai sepuluh. Terus lakukan sampai kita rileks.
2. Bayangkan diri sedang berada di tempat yang penuh kedamaian.
3. Berolahraga.
4. Menonton film yang bisa membuat kita tertawa.
5. Menangis.
6. Pakai headphone, pasang lagu favorit, dan menari.
7. Menulis di buku harian.
8. Hubungi teman yang dipercaya dan obrolkan masalah dengannya.
Catatan penulis saat menyambut kelahiran keponakan perempuannya. Saat ditanya petugas apakah hukuman yang diterimanya sudah membuatnya sadar akan kejahatannya, ia menjawab, "Dulu aku hanyalah seorang anak muda yang tak punya banyak pertimbangan dan melakukan sebuah kesalahan besar. Andai aku bisa bertemu dengan orang muda itu dan membujuknya agar tidak melakukannya. Namun, aku tak bisa...."
Jawaban itu yang membuat pembebasan bersyaratnya disetujui. Penulis lalu berkata bahwa anugerah Tuhan membuat kita mampu menyadari kesalahan yang kita lakukan di masa lalu tidak harus membuat hidup kita berantakan di masa kini.
