Aku kasih bintang tiga purely karena terjemahannya mulus banget. Aku pernah baca buku Bagus Dwi Hananto yang Napas Mayat, tapi ini pertama kalinya aku baca hasil terjemahan beliau. So smooth. Meski ada beberapa kata tak lazim yang membuatku harus membuka kamus seperti bingkas dan malis (lainnya tak ingat, haha).
Sama seperti ketika aku membaca karya Yoko Ogawa yang lain, Memory Police, aku kesulitan menangkap makna cerita ini. Setidaknya mungkin Memory Police masih bisa diduga-duga bahwa maksudnya mungkin simbolisasi pemerintahan yang otoriter dan rakyat yang tak berkutik sehingga akhirnya kehilangan segalanya termasuk diri mereka sendiri.
Tapi Asrama??? I dunno. Mengapa si sepupu menghilang? Apa maksudnya sarang lebah di akhir cerita itu? Aku sama sekali tidak mengerti. Untung saja novelet ini sangat singkat dan hanya terdiri dari 70 halaman dan diterjemahkan dengan sangat mulus.
Tokoh utamanya adalah seorang istri yang menjalani long-distance marriage dengan suaminya yang kini di Swedia. Cara ia menghabiskan waktu dalam kesendirian biasanya adalah menjahit selimut perca. Suatu ketika ia dimintai tolong oleh sepupunya yang jarak usianya jauh dengannya untuk mencari sebuah asrama murah karena ia akan segera kuliah di Tokyo. Sepupunya minta ditunjukkan ke asrama tempat sang tokoh utama dulu pernah tinggal di masa mudanya. Namun, kini ternyata asrama itu sudah berubah. Fasilitasnya tak lagi sebaik dulu, dan sepi sekali di sana. Hanya sepupunyalah satu-satunya penyewa yang digambarkan dalam cerita di linimasa kini.
Penjaga asrama itu (Kanrinin) adalah seorang lelaki tua yang tak punya dua tangan dan satu kaki akibat kecelakaan. Dari cerita si penjaga asrama ini, kita jadi tahu bahwa penyebab sepinya asrama itu adalah sebuah rumor yang timbul akibat menghilangnya salah satu penyewa kamar bertahun-tahun yang lalu. Tapi meski sudah tahu begitu, tokoh utama ini tetap membiarkan sepupunya tinggal di sana. Siapa sangka bahwa kemudian sepupunya akan mengalami hal yang serupa?
Penjaga asrama ini sebenarnya juga unik. Dia sangat tertarik dengan anatomi tubuh manusia dan bisa mengetahui kelebihan serta kondisi badan orang lain meski ia baru bertemu dengannya. Katanya ketertarikannya itu disebabkan karena tubuhnya sendiri yang tak lengkap. Penjaga asrama ini sudah dalam kondisi tak sehat ketika ditemui si aku dan sepupunya. Katanya tulang rusuknya bengkok dan nyaris menusuk jantungnya sendiri akibat dia selama ini hanya menggunakan otot dada dan tulang belikat karena tak memiliki tangan. I wonder if this kind of issues really happens to the disableds out there.
Satu dialog yang kusukai dari novel ini:
"Aku penasaran bagaimana rasanya hidup sendiri," kata sepupuku, bicara dengan dirinya sendiri.
"Apa kau cemas?" tanyaku.
"Sama sekali tidak," ia menggelengkan kepala. "Hanya sedikit gugup, seperti biasanya manakala aku meski menyesuaikan diri dengan keadaan yang berubah. Sebagaimana saat Ayah meninggal, atau ketika seorang gadis yang kusukai pindah sekolah tiba-tiba --pun waktu ayam peliharaanku dimakan kucing liar."
"Yah, rasanya hidup sendirian itu seperti kehilangan sesuatu." Aku mencermatinya. Raut mukanya ditimpa bayang awan saat ia melayangkan pandang ke kejauhan. Serta merta terpikir olehku bahwa semuda dirinya, ia sudah kehilangan begitu banyak hal penting: ayam, gadis yang disukai, serta ayahnya. "Walau demikian, sendirian bukan berarti kau menderita. Dalam artian tertentu hal itu beda dengan kehilangan akan sesuatu. Kau masih punya dirimu sendiri, sekalipun bila kau kehilangan segalanya. Kau mesti yakin pada diri sendiri dan tak berputus asa hanya karena dirimu sendirian."
Sungguh menegangkan. Rasanya seperti menonton film action saat membaca para tokohnya berusaha meloloskan diri "kejaran" api di hutan yang terbakar. InSungguh menegangkan. Ini adalah kisah tentang kemiskinan, kemarau, perusakan alam, dan keserakahan manusia. Aku pun bertanya-tanya terhadap tingginya standar Lomba Novela Basabasi 2022. Kalau Juara Harapan 3-nya saja sudah sebagus ini, juara-juara di atasnya sebagus apa coba?
Tokoh utamanya adalah Tempal dari kampung Ghorejeg. Keluarganya hanyalah satu dari banyak keluarga miskin di Pulau Bawean. Bapaknya sudah tiada. Ia hanya tinggal bersama ibunya dan Obek, adiknya yang masih SMA. Musim kemarau di Pulau Bawean digambarkan sangat berat. Penduduk kesusahan mendapatkan air. Untuk memperoleh air mereka harus berjalan menuju sumber air yang letaknya sangat jauh di kaki gunung. Saking keringnya, mandi digambarkan sebagai kemewahan.
Untuk menambah pemasukan keluarga, Tempal memaksa adiknya untuk ikut mendaki Gunung Tatorjek demi mencari umbi gadung. Umbi goddung papan ukurannya besar, mudah diolah, rasanya juga lebih empuk, manis, renyah, untuk dibuat menjadi keripik. Sekarung umbi goddung papan bisa bernilai hingga ratusan ribu.
Namun, sial bagi kedua saudara itu, di tengah pencariannya, mereka berhadapan dengan kebakaran hutan yang sangat ganas. Mereka pun harus lari demi menyelamatkan diri agar tidak hangus terpanggang. Namun, Tempal dengan keras kepala terus berusaha mempertahankan karung-karung umbi gadungnya sampai Obek jengkel. Di saat genting, dua karung itu hanya menjadi penghalang. Namun, rupanya Tempal punya alasan yang bisa dibilang sangat membuat terenyuh mengapa ia bersikeras tetap membawa karung-karung itu. Obek pun marah dan keduanya berkelahi sementara kobaran api semakin mendekat.
Sebagai pembaca, perasaan kita mungkin bercampur aduk antara kasihan atau jengkel melihat kekeraskepalaan Tempal dalam mempertahankan karung umbi gadung yang sering menjadi penghambat jalannya dan Obek dalam menyelamatkan diri. Masa tidak sayang nyawa? Tapi begitu alasan sesungguhnya Tempal dibuka, kita akan langsung terenyuh. Betapa kemiskinan begitu menghimpit orang-orang seperti Tempal.
Novel ini didominasi oleh adegan Tempal dan Obek bersusah payah berlari menghindari kejaran api. Penulis tampaknya punya 1001 cara untuk membuat adegan-adegan tersebut tidak terasa berulang dan monoton. Detail jenis tetumbuhan di hutan Gunung Tatorjek dijabarkan dengan sangat terperinci. Andai saja novel ini dilengkapi dengan ilustrasi yang bisa menambah pemahaman pembaca akan ragam flora dan fauna hutan Pulau Bawean. Yang menarik, kedua saudara itu digambarkan makan daun bolorok dan minum embun di daun-daun demi mengatasi rasa dahaga mereka.
Ketika malam menjelang, mereka bertemu dengan Pak Moddin, salah satu tetangga mereka yang ternyata dipekerjakan untuk menebang pohon-pohon di hutan. Dari Pak Moddinlah kedua kakak beradik itu tahu bahwa kebakaran hutan itu disengaja. Dan anak buah majikan Pak Moddin, Karto dan Bogem kini sedang memburunya untuk menghabisi nyawanya. Makin gawat saja konflik dalam novel ini.
Ada satu bagian yang membuatku langsung gemas bukan kepalang. Tempal, Obek, dan Pak Moddin akhirnya hampir mencapai jalan raya. Namun, jalannya terlalu menurun sehingga mereka pun jatuh terguling-guling ke bawah. Pak Moddin luka parah. Saat itulah mereka berdua melihat dari kejauhan ada mobil pick up milik Karto dan Bogem. Keduanya berusaha mengalihkan perhatian dua orang itu agar tak tahu bahwa orang yang mereka buru ada di dekat situ. Namun, sialnya saat mereka sudah mau pergi, Pak Moddin malah memanggil-manggil mereka, minta agar tak ditinggal. Bajiguuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuur! Kesalnya aku. Bagaimana kelanjutannya? Silakan baca sendiri novelnya.
Novel ini sukses bikin aku penasaran dengan Pulau Bawean sekaligus mengkhawatirkan insiden kebakaran hutan yang sering berulang di sana. Kata "Rabok" yang menjadi judul novel ini berarti "api" dalam bahasa Pulau Bawean.
Sayangnya ending dari novel ini rasanya masih kurang paripurna. Meski ada satu tokoh yang kemudian bisa dibilang bertobat dan berganti pihak, rasanya tak mungkin dia bisa lolos dari jeratan hukum begitu saja, karena komplotan pembakar hutan itu pasti tidak akan tinggal diam dan akan "bernyanyi" ketika diinterogasi polisi nanti. Hal ini tidak diperlihatkan dalam novelnya. Lalu sang mastermind alias bos dari para penebang dan pembakar hutan ini tidak diperlihatkan batang hidungnya. Yang menjadi lawan bagi Tempal, Obek, dan Pak Moddin hanyalah para kroco Karto dan Bogem. Di film Petualangan Sherina saja yang menjadi lawan sang tokoh utama tidak hanya minion tapi juga bos besarnya.
Kubayangkan novel ini bisa ditutup dengan ending yang sangat getir tapi juga menggambarkan realita di Indonesia: sang bos besar ditangkap polisi, tapi berhasil bebas karena menyogok petugas. Andai endingnya dibuat lebih paripurna, bagian akhir novel ini tentu sedahsyat bagian pembuka dan tengahnya. Tapi tak apalah. Sangat menghibur. Aku bisa menghabiskan buku ini dalam waktu sehari semalam saja. Selain karena tipis, juga karena ceritanya sangat memikat dan membuat penasaran dari awal sampai akhir.
Ini kedua kalinya aku membaca novel Pak Arul yang setingnya berada di Pulau Bawean. Yang pertama adalah Pemburu Rembulan. Tampaknya Pak Arul memang menjadikan pulau tempat lahirnya ini sebagai muse alias sumber inspirasi dalam tulisan-tulisannya. Idenya lumayan menarik. Tentang Eren Enomoto, gadis bertampang suram yang suka bermain catur manusia di sekolahnya. Dia jago mengobservasi orang dan tak ragu ikut campur untuk membereskan konflik para murid yang ada di sekolahnya. Hanya satu murid populer yang juga tak punya teman, Kiriya Tezuka, yang tahu soal hobi anehnya.
Namun, inti ceritanya rupanya bukan di situ. Tezuka Kiriya bahkan hanya karakter figuran yang terkesan tempelan saja. Kisah ini sebenarnya terpusat pada kehidupan asli Eren sebagai Erena, seorang top model commercial yang sedang berjuang untuk meraih penghargaan Diamond Youth Prize atau DYP ke-17, sebuah penghargaan bagi model commercial di usia 15-18 tahun, yang hanya diadakan empat tahun sekali. Artinya seorang model hanya punya kesempatan ikut serta dan memenangkan penghargaan ini sekali dalam seumur hidupnya. Selain itu, hubungan Eren dengan kekasihnya, Reiga Braxton, seorang CEO Moon TV juga jadi sorotan utama. So, bye bye Tezuka.
Keinginan kuat Eren dalam meraih DYP ternyata ada hubungannya dengan masa lalunya yang kelam terkait seorang model ternama yang dulu menghilang padahal sudah jadi nominator DYP, Masuda Rumi.
Novel ini memperlihatkan bahwa menjadi model foto untuk majalah atau produk itu sama sekali tak mudah. Tak cuma bermodal tampang cantik dan senyam-senyum doang. Namun ada kutipan dari narasi tentang Y, teman minum dan teman bisbol sang narator, ini membuatku terhenyak dalam perenungan.
Orang yang berpikiran mulia tidak mengesampingkan orang lain untuk membuat jalan mereka di dunia. Tapi, kemudian mereka sendiri pada akhirnya disingkirkan oleh gelombang yang semakin mendekat. (halaman 36)
Y adalah seorang editor produksi. Dia sangat workaholic sampai akhirnya kena kanker usus besar. Namun, segera setelah meninggalkan rumah sakit, dia langsung bekerja kembali. Saking sibuknya, Y tidak sempat lagi menulis puisi untuk diterbitkan di majalah. Padahal, bagi Y, dia adalah penyair yang bakatnya layak dihormati.

Ceritanya sebenarnya sederhana. Tentang sepasang suami istri yang menjalin ikatan dengan kucing tetangga yang suka bertamu di rumah sewaan mereka. Kucing itu mereka sebut dengan nama Chibi. Sang istri tadinya tak menyukai Chibi, tapi lama-lama hatinya luluh juga.
Pernah ada kejadian ketika sang istri ngambek gara-gara dicakar Chibi. Dia langsung membereskan kotak kardus dan tempat makan Chibi, serta menutup lubang pintu tempat Chibi biasa menyelinap. Namun, istrinya kembali luluh.
Sayangnya nasib Chibi digambarkan mengenaskan di pertengahan cerita dan buatku itu cukup mengagetkan. Peristiwanya kebetulan bertepatan dengan meninggalnya suami pemilik rumah. Rumah sewaan itu pun akan dijual demi menghindari pajak untuk benda warisan yang baru dibagikan kepada keluarga setelah pemiliknya meninggal. Otomatis sang suami istri penyewa rumah pun harus bersiap untuk pindah. Lalu kemudian mereka mendapati beberapa kucing datang untuk menggantikan keberadaan Chibi. Tetap saja, Chibi tak bisa hilang sepenuhnya dari benak mereka.

Organ tubuh yang mempersepsi, menerjemahkan, serta mempertahankan konsep menarik adalah otak. Otak manusia sangat penting karena di sanalah bermula hal-hal yang dipercaya tentang diri sendiri, cara bersikap, bagaimana hendak bertindak, berkata, bercerita, menyentuh, menggoda, dan berbuat sesuka hati. Dari otak segala sesuatu yang menarik dapat bermula. Dari otak pula sikap banyak berharap, pencemburu, pemarah, sensitif, terlalu perhatian, tidak mengerti cara bertindak, berkata, dan menggoda malah menjauhkan diri dari orang yang sedang didekati. Otak adalah sumber masalah sekaligus potensi manusia.
Hal yang paling membatasi dengan apa yang ingin kita capai dan raih adalah belenggu mental. Jika kita percaya kita punya sifat penakut, pemalu, minder, bodoh, lemah, jelek, atau miskin maka keadaannya akan jadi demikian. Sebaliknya jika selalu merasa percaya diri, menarik, pandai, menyenangkan, maka alam semesta dan diri sendiri akan bekerja sama mencapai apa yang dipercayai.
Hipnosis adalah cara yang cukup sederhana untuk melakukan perubahan pikiran. Salah satu cara hipnosis paling sederhana adalah self-talk atau berbicara dengan diri sendiri, entah itu disadari atau tidak. Bran Less dan Jacky Owens dalam The Handbook of Contemporary Clinical Hypnosis; Theory and Practice (2012) menyatakan bahwa sesuai dengan apa yang kita katakan pada diri sendiri, kitalah yang menjadikan diri sendiri percaya diri, menarik, pandai, dan menyenangkan. Sebaliknya kita juga yang menjadikan diri minder, bodoh, jelek, lemah, bahkan miskin.
Karena itu kita harus lebih menyadari setiap pikiran yang muncul di dalam otak tentang diri kita. Mulai perkataan-perkataan yang memuji, membanggakan, mendukung, mendorong, dan menguatkan. Jika ada self-talk yang buruk, segera sadari dan hentikan. Katakan hal-hal ini di depan kaca setiap hari secara terus-menerus dan rasakan perbedaannya pada tubuh dan perasaan kita. Lakukan self-talk sampai kita mempercayai kata-kata berikut ini:
1. Saya adalah orang yang menarik. Semua orang menyukai saya.
2. Saya orang yang pandai. Saya mampu memulai topik yang menyenangkan.
3. Saya orang yang kuat. Saya mampu tetap bahagia bagaimanapun kondisinya.
4. Saya orang yang cantik/ganteng yang membuat orang-orang tergila-gila.
5. Saya orang yang kaya. Saya menemukan banyak hal berharga di dalam diri saya.
6. Saya adalah orang yang unik dan tidak ada duanya.
Apa yang kita percaya akan menular dan orang lain juga akan merasakannya.

Karisma adalah sesuatu yang terpancar dari alam bawah sadar dan ditangkap oleh lawan bicara bahwa kita adalah sosok yang kuat, berwibawa, dan menarik. Karisma dimunculkan dengan membangkitkan potensi bawah sadar sehingga kekuatan kita terpancar kuat dan tertangkap oleh orang-orang di sekitar kita. Karisma adalah masalah kualitas dari dalam diri yang terpancar kuat. Karisma sering tidak muncul karena kita sendiri yang menguburnya. Penyebabnya adalah karena kita tidak percaya kalau memiliki kualitas yang sedemikian baik.
Di dalam diri orang yang berkarisma terdapat beberapa kepercayaan dasar yang disebut sebagai presuposisi. Kepercayaan dasar ini bukan hanya berhenti di tataran pikiran, melainkan harus dimaknai di dalam hati, pikiran, perasaan, serta perilaku. Siapa yang ingin memiliki presuposisi harus berlatih untuk memikirkan, merasakan, serta melakukan segala sesuatu sesuai kepercayaan dasarnya. Jika ada satu komponen yang tidak serasi maka wajar jika hal itu hanya berhenti dalam tatanan pikiran dan bukan merupakan kepercayaan atau presuposisi. Latihan harus dilakukan secara konsisten.
Berikut adalah beberapa presuposisi yang akan membantu kita memunculkan karisma yang perlu dilatih setiap hari:
Presuposisi pertama. Your map is not your territory. Persepsi tidak sama dengan kenyataan. Istilah yang diciptakan oleh Alfred Korzybski.
A. Mencoret-coret peta tidak akan mengubah wilayah. Mengubah persepsi tidak akan mengubah kenyataan. Objek yang dituju tidak akan berubah hanya dengan membayangkannya. Misal, kita tidak akan mendapatkan nomor telepon seseorang hanya dengan bermodal yakin dan percaya orang itu akan memberikannya begitu saja. Tapi kalau kita punya koneksi kenalan yang merupakan teman orang itu, kemungkinan untuk mendapatkannya jadi bertambah.
B. Peta adalah objek yg terpisah dari wilayah, dan peta adalah objek yang ada dalam wilayah itu. Bukan hanya kita yang jadi alasan sesuatu terjadi. Hal-hal yang terjadi juga membuat kita seperti sekarang.
Contoh yang kutangkap dari buku ini adalah, jangan halu dengan menganggap bahwa keindahan pasangan atau calon pasangan itu tercipta untuk kita nikmati. Karena dia sudah seperti itu sejak lahir dan sebelum kita mengenalnya.
Presuposisi kedua: Anda adalah orang yang menarik. Bayangkan kriteria ideal orang yang menarik itu seperti apa. Tulis, lalu investasikan uang dan waktu untuk mewujudkan kriteria itu dalam diri sendiri.
Presuposisi ketiga: Anda adalah orang yang bahagia. Mampu membuat bahagia diri sendiri dan berbagi kebahagiaan dengan orang lain. Tapi bukan kebahagiaan yang didapat dari menginjak, merampas, dan curang. Lalu ini bagian yang menarik, sekaligus paling rumitnya: Kebahagiaan yang benar lahir dari dalam hati, penerimaan akan rasa sakit, pemberian maaf, serta kemampuan bekerja sama sekalipun sulit. Kebahagiaan juga bersumber dari keikhlasan menerima hal-hal yang tidak bisa diubah dan kerja keras dalam mengubah apa pun yang masih mungkin diperbaiki.
Untuk bisa terampil menjadi bahagia, rupanya orang perlu berlatih. Dan keterampilan ini harus diawali dengan manajemen konflik yang baik. Karena dalam setiap hubungan, suatu saat pasti akan ada konflik. Karena itu diperlukan kemampuan untuk bernegosiasi, berkompromi, serta melepaskan, dan memaafkan.
Presuposisi keempat: dia beruntung jika bisa ada di dekat Anda. Jika kita berhasil menerapkan presuposisi kedua dan ketiga, maka orang akan senang berada di dekat kita. Salah satu penyebab orang pergi karena menganggap kita adalah benalu bagi kebahagiaannya. Dengan menanamkan kepercayaan bahwa orang lain beruntung bisa di dekat kita, tidak ada beban seandainya orang itu pergi karena berarti orang itu yang rugi. Sikap mengejar-ngejar seseorang justru membuat orang itu tidak nyaman dan pergi. Cintai dan hargai diri sendiri sebelum mencintai orang lain.
Presuposisi kelima: tidak ada kegagalan, melainkan umpan balik. Jika kita sudah berusaha dan tidak menghasilkan sesuatu yang diharapkan, maka sesungguhnya kita sedang memperoleh pelajaran soal apa yang belum sesuai. Dari situ kita bisa menyusun perbaikan. Dalam presuposisi ini, kuncinya adalah ketenangan berpikir dan obyektivitas. Karena dalam keadaan kalut dan emosional, akan sulit menerima feed back yang isinya tidak sesuai dengan harapan.
Presuposisi keenam: manusia melihat berdasarkan persepsi, bukan realita. Contohnya ketika memilih pasangan kekasih, semua itu adalah persoalan persepsi saja. Sangat mungkin apa yang kita anggap menarik sebenarnya tidak memiliki daya tarik (di mata orang lain). Sesuatu yang kita anggap tidak menjanjikan bisa saja sebenarnya punya masa depan yang cerah.
Socrates pernah mengatakan bahwa kebenaran itu ada tiga: kebenaranmu, kebenaranku, dan kebenaran. Sangat penting bagi kita untuk mengambil jarak antara persepsi diri sendiri dan realita. Karena apa yang kita anggap benar, bisa jadi ternyata salah, begitu juga sebaliknya. Sehingga tidak perlu bersikukuh bahwa calon kekasih adalah yang terbaik dan pasti akan memberi kebahagiaan setelah berhasil mendapatkannya. Itu persepsi yang salah total. Kebahagiaan adalah ketika kita sudah bahagia, dengan atau tanpa kekasih. Jika kita masih menggantungkan kebahagiaan kita pada keberadaan orang lain, artinya kita sendiri yang membuat diri kita tidak pantas untuk berbahagia seutuhnya.
Rasa suka atau benci dimulai dengan persepsi. Dengan menyadari bahwa persepsi bukan realita, kita jadi tidak akan merendahkan seseorang hanya berdasarkan berita.
Kualitas seseorang yang berkharisma adalah mampu mengenali kekuatan dan kelemahan pribadi. Dengan begitu kita akan lebih bisa memetakan potensi yang bisa menjadi daya tarik kita, serta mampu memperbaiki kelemahan yang selama ini tidak diakui.
Presuposisi ketujuh: kita tidak mungkin tidak berkomunikasi. Berkomunikasi tidak hanya sebatas lewat perkataan, tapi juga lewat bahasa tubuh. Sayangnya, komunikasi lewat bahasa tubuh sering kali tidak terkontrol. Tubuh manusia menyampaikan pesan secara apa adanya, berarti gestur menunjukkan perasaan sebenarnya. Buku ini mengklaim bisa melatih cara untuk mengendalikan arah komunikasi dengan mengendalikan segala sesuatu yang kita rasakan.
Presuposisi kedelapan: Makna komunikasi kita adalah respons yang kita dapatkan. Bisa jadi kita ingin mengatakan hal baik, tapi orang lain malah meresponsnya dengan negatif. Berarti makna komunikasi kita saat itu buruk. Padahal, respons dari lawan bicara adalah penentu keberhasilan komunikasi, bukan tujuan.
Jika orang menjauh ketika kita berusaha menyampaikan sesuatu dengan tujuan baik, terima saja dan evaluasi diri. Jangan mengejar untuk menjelaskan tujuan. Ini penting agar kita berlatih bersikap objektif dan tenang.
Presuposisi kesembilan: resistensi: takut ditolak. Dalam mengembangkan presuposisi, kadang kita kesulitan memercayai hal itu. Misalnya, berbicara dengan orang yang kita anggap menarik bisa membuat kita grogi setengah mati. Semua ketakutan itu membuat tindakan kita jadi tidak produktif. Rasa takut gagal menghalangi kita menjadi versi terbaik diri kita.
Ini semua bukan masalah kepercayaan diri, melainkan kompetensi. Kompetensi berkaitan dengan sejauh apa kita bisa mengembangkan diri, membuat diri lebih kuat, berharga, menarik, menyenangkan, dan memiliki masa depan cerah.
Sebagai contoh, bisa saja seorang lelaki gendut paruh baya yang kaya didekati banyak orang. Itu karena dia punya kompetensi untuk membuat orang-orang yang mendekatinya merasa nyaman, aman, dan tenteram. Kompetensi itu membuat orang-orang di sekitarnya mendapat jaminan kepastian sehingga bisa tetap bertahan.
Untuk mengatasi ketakutan ini, penulis mengatakan kita perlu melatih skill dalam buku ini untuk meningkatkan nilai diri kita. Latihannya adalah:
1. Tulis 10 kelemahan dalam diri. 2. Tulis 10 kelebihan diri 3. Tulis di kolom keterangan hal-hal yang bisa dikembangkan dari kelebihan kita. 4. Tulis di kolom keterangan hal-hal yang dapat diperbaiki dari kelemahan kita.
Jangan hanya ditulis. Lakukan evaluasi dan reevaluasi terhadap setiap kemampuan, kekuatan, kelebihan, kekurangan, dan masalah, agar bisa menemukan solusi.
Lebih baik kita fokus pada mengembangkan kelebihan daripada hanya sibuk memperbaiki kekurangan. Sebagai contoh, orang tidak akan tertarik jika kita sekadar tidak melakukan perbuatan jahat. Kita akan lebih disukai jika bisa lebih murah hati, gemar menolong, ramah, dan gemar melakukan berbagai perbuatan baik.
Pengenalan akan kekuatan perlu diimbangi rasa syukur dan usaha untuk mengembangkan segala kelebihan. Seting cerita yang dipaparkan kebanyakan di kota Hamamatsu, tapi ada juga momen ketika mereka bepergian ke Kyoto, Osaka, Prefektur Shizuoka, dan banyak tempat lagi.
Tulisannya pendek-pendek, dengan begitu ada banyak sekali ragam cerita dan informasi tentang Jepang yang bisa didapatkan di sini. Di tiap bab disisipi tips-tips yang disesuaikan dengan tema bab.
Sayangnya tak ada sisipan foto latar tempat sama sekali dalam buku ini. Padahal, suami sang penulis adalah fotografer. Memang cara penulis mendeskripsikan tempat itu sendiri sudah cukup detail dalam membangkitkan berbagai imaji. Review novelnya di Goodreads lumayan bagus. Makin semangat baca pas tahu novel ini berhubungan dengan The Heritage dan Matryoshka (sepertinya sama RunReview novelnya di Goodreads lumayan bagus. Makin semangat baca pas tahu novel ini berhubungan dengan The Heritage dan Matryoshka (sepertinya sama Runaway Bride juga. Tapi yang ini belum punya). Jadi pas baca ini aku langsung marathon baca karya-karya Ghyna yang lain untuk tahu korelasi ceritanya.
Awalnya agak menyulitkan karena para anggota forum yang jadi tokoh di sini terbilang banyak. Tiap bab ditulis dari sudut pandang mereka secara bergantian, tapi masing-masing terasa begitu samar dan sepotong-sepotong. Dan mereka nggak pakai nama asli. Plus keterangan soal jati-diri dan latar belakang mereka tersebar di sepanjang chat. Rasanya kaya harus scroll back bolak-balik chattinganku sama teman. Hahahaaa...syeum.
Tapi aku mulai bisa menikmati karena member Matryoshka yang begitu ceria dan suka menceritakan topik random soal kecurigaannya kalau sedang di-stalk tetangga cowoknya yang masih SMA. Kebetulannya lagi mereka kemudian malah jadian!
Aku makin tertarik saat ada member bernama Vermarine. Dia tokoh di novel The Heritage dan di sini diceritakan punya pacar dokter. Apa memang orang yang sama? Tapi kalau dilihat dari timeline, cerita ini terjadi sebelum event di Matryoshka dan The Heritage. Sedangkan Vermarine di sini digambarkan udah dewasa dan bekerja. Kok??? Aih bingung.
Cerita makin seru ketika salah satu member tiba-tiba menghilang. Rupanya karena koma setelah jatuh dari tangga gara-gara di-bully. Para anggota member langsung ribut dan masing-masing mencari sang member hingga di kehidupan nyatanya. Pada akhirnya mereka berhasil bertemu dan rahasia forum pun terungkap.
Forum itu dibuat oleh seorang psikolog untuk para kliennya. Ia sengaja mengumpulkan mereka semua dalam satu wadah digital karena ingin tahu apakah orang-orang yang saling tidak tahu jati diri masing-masing ini bisa membantu dengan berbagi cerita dan masalah. Kalau dipikir memang kadang kita lebih mudah curhat ke orang asing di internet daripada ke orang yang benar-benar kita kenal di dunia nyata *pengalaman dicurhati banyak teman dunia maya hahaha...
Cuma aku herannya, karena para klien itu nggak tahu kalau forum itu dibuat oleh psikolog mereka, kok mereka mau ya ngeklik dan join forum random dari undangan via email? Hahaha...
Terus beberapa tokoh kayak Vermarine kayaknya juga bukan klien si psikolog. Hidupnya juga oke-oke aja. Tapi kok dia bisa masuk ke forum???
Ya pokoknya novel ini ditutup dengan ending yang melegakan. Endingnya ya yang ada di Blurb itu. Ga nyangka, kan. Hahaha...

Bagian yang paling nggak enak dari menjadi kembar adalah harus menghadapi pertanyaan-pertanyaan klise berulang dari orang-orang sekitar mereka, apalagBagian yang paling nggak enak dari menjadi kembar adalah harus menghadapi pertanyaan-pertanyaan klise berulang dari orang-orang sekitar mereka, apalagi kalau pertanyaan itu bernada membanding-bandingkan seperti, "Cantik mana Eva atau Evi?" atau "Mana yang lebih pinter?" dsb.
Berisi pengalaman lucu, haru, dan gila duo penulis kembar Mbak Evi Sri Rezeki dan Mbak Eva Sri Rahayu. Udah ketemu salah satunya di event Expert Writing Class GWP3, dan alhamdulillah sukses mendapatkan tanda tangan buat Adekku (pemilik asli buku ini hihihi). Sebelumnya di event GWP Batch 2, Mbak Evi Sri Rezeki masuk sebagai 10 finalis GWP 2. Wow! Keren juga nih, sodara kembaran yang sama-sama produktif dan konsisten di dunia tulis-menulis.
Bagian yang bikin geleng-geleng adalah pas mereka berdua nyeritain pengalaman mereka gonta-ganti pacar, dan ketika salah satu putus dia akan ngomporin yang satunya buat putus juga (DANG!). Ada juga pengalaman mereka pas ngerjain teman-teman yang nelpon rumah dan nggak bisa mengenali perbedaan suara mereka berdua. Dan cerita saudara kembar yang iseng tukar tempat pas sekolah yang kukira cuma ada di fiksi, ternyata beneran pernah mereka lakuin lho. Meskipun akhirnya mereka kudu ngaku juga ke teman-teman mereka yang curiga.

Itulah salah satu kutipan dalam buku ini. Buku ini bercerita tentang Rasta seorang pemuda yang memiliki bakat fotografi. Sayang usahanya untuk mendalami dunia yang dicintainya itu justru dijegal oleh orang-orang terdekatnya. Sang ayah dan pacarnya sendiri.
Pak Hernowo, atau ayah Rasta di sini digambarkan sebagai orang yang otoriter dan dominan. Ia begitu membanggakan Rasta yang anak baik, penurut, juga berprestasi. Sehingga ia pun membelikan kamera dan memperkenalkan Rasta pada hobi fotografi. Namun, ia tak menyadari bahwa limpahan kasih sayang itu dianggap tak seimbang oleh anak keduanya, Raja. Alhasil, Raja atau adik Rasta digambarkan memendam rasa iri yang begitu mengakar kuat hingga novel ini nyaris berakhir.
Raja iri dengan Rasta yang tampaknya lebih dibanggakan. Misalnya, saat ia juara kelas sang ayah tak memberi hadiah apa pun. Tapi saat Rasta lulus SMA, sang ayah membuat perayaan khusus (mungkin semacam syukuran kecil-kecilan? Karena hal itu tak diceritakan detail di sini). Dan rasa iri itu diungkapkan dengan cara yang sangat kekanak-kanakan. Raja berteriak, bahkan berkelahi dengan kakaknya. Di awal cerita pun sudah digambarkan bagaimana ia memporak-porandakan isi kamar kakaknya setelah perayaan kelulusan yang diadakan sang ayah.
Rasta digambarkan lebih banyak bersikap mengalah terhadap sang adik. Sampai pada suatu titik ia tak tahan lagi. Ketika sang ayah bersikukuh menyuruhnya berhenti memotret dan Raja tampak begitu menikmati momen-momen saat ia tersiksa, ia menantang adiknya. Tak disangka Raja menjawab tantangan itu dan memukulnya terlebih dahulu. Rasta lalu membela diri, tapi berlebihan, sampai Raja tak sadarkan diri. Parahnya perkelahian ini dipergoki sang ayah saat Raja sudah tergeletak, sehingga di matanya, Rasta yang salah. Tokoh ayah di sini sangat menjengkelkan. Ia benar-benar digambarkan "tak punya telinga" untuk mendengarkan penjelasan anak-anaknya.
Masalah Rasta ditambah dengan Sasa, sang pacar yang kemudian minta putus karena Rasta dianggap terlalu gila fotografi sampai-sampai tak memperhatikannya lagi. Aaah... Rasta, kasihannya dirimu, Nak. Padahal, Rasta sempat beberapa kali memenangkan lomba fotografi di Bogor. Tapi tetap saja semua prestasi itu tak meluluhkan hati orang-orang yang menentang impiannya untuk jadi fotografer.
Rasta kemudian membuat kesepakatan dengan sang ayah. Ia berjanji akan gantung kamera, tapi ia juga tak mau mengikuti keinginan ayahnya untuk menjadi dokter. Diambillah jalan tengah, Rasta pun mendaftar masuk jurusan DKV (Disain Komunikasi Visual) di ITS!
Rasanya ini agak ganjil. Karena, kurasa orang tua yang tidak mau anaknya jadi fotografer, biasanya juga akan meragukan jurusan DKV, kan? Secara jurusan ini juga tak jauh-jauh dari bidang seni desain yang seringkali diragukan orang. Dan... mungkin ayah Rasta tidak tahu, tapi jurusan ini juga berhubungan dengan kamera. Karena media seni disain kan juga mencakup fotografi juga. Ergh...buatku sih aneh.
Yang aneh juga, kalau sang ayah tak mau Rasta jadi fotografer, kenapa malah memberi kamera sebagai hadiah??? Tapi mungkin ada juga orang tua seperti itu. Ia memperkenalkan anaknya pada suatu hobi, tapi begitu si anak tergila-gila dengan hobinya dan bermimpi menjadikannya sebagai karir, barulah orang tua merasa terusik karena ingin anaknya menjalani hidup yang lebih "mainstream". Bekerja di kantor misalnya).

Di kereta menuju Surabaya, Rasta bertemu dengan Angga, cowok yang kemudian diketahui berasal dari Yogya dan ternyata kuliah di ITS juga. Angga digambarkan sangat cuek dan menyebalkan di awal. Ia tak menggubris sapaan Rasta. Tapi ketika mereka bertemu di acara Ospek ITS dan tahu kalau mereka satu jurusan, Angga langsung berubah menjadi hangat. Lhaaa??? Bahkan Angga-lah yang kemudian menggantikan peran Ian, sahabat sesama penggila fotografi Rasta di Bogor. Meskipun jago fotografi, Angga memutuskan meninggalkan dunia fotografi karena suatu insiden yang berkaitan dengan pacarnya yang sudah meninggal. Angga yang kemudian berhasil membuat Rasta kembali menggeluti dunia fotografi dengan membujuknya ikut lomba di kampus.
Di bagian ini, sifat plin-plan Rasta diperlihatkan sangat menjengkelkan sekaligus membingungkan. Dia bilang dia mau berhenti memotret karena sudah janji dengan ayahnya. Tapi waktu diajak Angga hunting foto untuk lomba, dia mau. Dan sudah jauh-jauh ke lokasi foto, sudah ambil foto pula, eh Rasta bilang dia nggak mau ikut lomba. ARGHHH. Terus ngomong berbusa-busa lagi sama Angga, akhirnya dia mau ikutan. Hngg... Waktu ikut lomba pun, untuk pertama kalinya Rasta naik darah gara-gara hasil fotonya dihina panitia saat mendaftar. Ternyata prestasinya di Bogor tidak membuatnya bisa meraih hal serupa dengan mudah di Surabaya. Ia pun kembali belajar teknik-teknik fotografi dari Angga.
Diceritakan juga Rasta sempat kesulitan mengikuti pelajaran di DKV (kuduga karena Rasta nggak bisa menggambar). Untungnya dia punya dosen bernama Pak Djatmiko yang mendukungnya sampai akhirnya dia bisa lulus skripsi. Pak Djatmiko juga yang mendidiknya untuk bisa membagi waktu antara kuliah dengan hobi fotografi saat pemuda ini keteteran.
Setelah lulus, Rasta kembali ke Bogor dan bertemu lagi dengan Ian. Sang ayah dan adiknya masih tetap jadi sosok yang menjengkelkan. Rasta dan Ian lalu nekad pergi ke Jakarta untuk melamar kerja. Mereka kemudian sadar bahwa tidak semudah itu mencari kerja. Rencana B pun dibuat, Rasta dan Ian rela bekerja apa saja, asal mereka bisa tetap punya biaya hidup di Jakarta, dan dari situ mereka akan berusaha mencari jalan untuk jadi fotografer.
Di sini sempat ada keanehan juga, Ian mengatakan nilai IPK Rasta lumayan tinggi, sehingga ia bisa bekerja di bank. Meskipun Rasta menolak melamar ke bank, dialog ini tetap aneh. Karena setinggi ap apun IPK Ian, tapi bidang DKV dengan bidang Perbankan kan jauh banget. Hegh...
Skip-forward, dia dapat kerja, tapi di bidang administrasi. Sempat mengerutkan kening juga waktu ada bagian yang menyatakan pekerjaan ini pas dengan kemampuan akademiknya. Haaah??? Sekali lagi, bidang seni disain dan administrasi gitu lho, apa hubungannya?
Lalu setelah setahun bekerja di sana, tak sengaja ia bertemu dengan kenalannya yang fotografer profesional. Kenalannya ini rupanya masih ingat dengan Rasta dan hasil foto-fotonya. Ia pun menawari Rasta untuk pindah ke majalah fotografi tempat ia bekerja. How lucky. Meskipun rencana kepindahannya ini sempat menimbulkan salah paham dengan rekan-rekan kerjanya, Rasta akhirnya bisa pindah kerja dengan mulus ke tempat yang lebih sesuai dengan passionnya. Kali ini sambil mengajak Ian juga.
Kemampuan Rasta meningkat drastis di tempat kerja barunya. Ia dan Ian akhirnya bisa mendirikan studio kecil-kecilan bersama. Namanya juga mulai dikenal, sampai akhirnya menarik seorang penulis ternama untuk bekerja sama dengannya dalam suatu proyek buku. Namun, kemujuran Rasta di sini diuji karena kemudian ia terkena tuduhan plagiasi foto! Rasta kembali jatuh setelah berkali-kali berusaha bangkit lagi...

Bagian terbaik dari novel ini adalah ulasan soal teknik fotografi yang detail. Penulis rupanya benar-benar tahu dan paham apa yang dia tulis. Meskipun yah... orang awam sepertiku tetap doesn't understand a single thing of it. Huahaha. Tapi yang jelas ini membuat kesan dunia fotografi dalam novel ini terlihat meyakinkan.
Tokoh Rasta sebagai tokoh utama di sini juga tidak digambarkan terlalu ideal. Meski berbakat dan pintar, dia punya banyak flaws, sering galau, baper, nggak matang secara emosional, mudah panik dan lain-lain. Tapi justru itu membuat Rasta terlihat lebih membumi dan sangat manusiawi. Rasta beruntung karena dia dikelilingi oleh orang-orang yang secara langsung maupun tidak langsung mendukung terbukanya jalan dalam hidupnya.
Namun, sayang banyak keanehan dalam plot, dialog, narasi, seperti yang sudah disebutkan di atas. Setingan waktu dalam cerita ini begitu panjang. Sejak Rasta lulus SMA sampai dia bekerja. Tapi novel ini terlalu tipis untuk menjadi wadah rentang waktu sepanjang itu. Akhirnya banyak bagian yang diskip dan di-fast forward. Perjuangan Rasta dalam meraih impiannya jadi kurang tereksplor secara utuh. Tiba-tiba saja dia menang lomba, tiba-tiba saja dia berhasil menyelesaikan skripsi, lalu lulus.
Tuduhan plagiasi yang jadi klimaks cerita juga terkesan janggal. Karena tidak dijelaskan bagian mana dari foto Rasta yang pantas dituding sebagai plagiasi. Seolah jagad sosial media dengan mudah bisa digiring untuk menuding seseorang menjadi plagiator tanpa bukti konkrit yang cukup. Tapi memang pelaku di balik kasus ini ternyata sangat tak terduga.
Detail hasil pencapaian konkrit Rasta juga tak dijabarkan. Misalnya, sebagus apa sih foto-foto yang diambil Rasta hingga dia dapat semua pengakuan itu? Sayang sekali.
Meskipun banyak holes-nya, novel ini didukung dengan gaya penulisan yang ringan dan rapi, sehingga tetap bisa dinikmati dengan nyaman sampai halaman terakhir.
