Tapi penceritaannya sangat subtil kok dan tidak mengganggu kenikmatan baca, if that aspect is not your things.
...more

I always assume Harlequin's Nocturnes line with a light paranormal romance but this book surprised me. More like a romantic suspense with mermaid elements, since the latter didn't explained thoroughly and focus heavily on the suspense part. It's have a heroine with many secrets (well, she is a mermaid. Half merfolk to be exact), a sherrif hero that have chips on his shoulder and a women-hating serial killer. I liked that Herbert feature character with special needs. The sisterhood is one of the strength of this book and open possibilities of them to get their own books....more
Si tokoh utama, Saizo Kirigakure, hobinya tereak2 molo, beneran khas komik shounen yang...milih make otot ketimbang otak.
Jika anda penggemar cowo ganteng seksi mempesona tanpa memperhatikan kualitas cerita seh...silakan aja dibaca...di Gramedia (aka numpang baca :P) ...more
Chase Me is my first Tessa Bailey book and also my attempt to try to understand this NA thingie. TBH, the story is pretty much simple, conflict3 stars
Chase Me is my first Tessa Bailey book and also my attempt to try to understand this NA thingie. TBH, the story is pretty much simple, conflict just a few and recycled in some part. Roxy kinda frustated me with her antisocial nature and her stubborness. But I can see myself in Roxy, even in her age I'm not that anti social like her, so I can forgive what she did. It just don't make her as my favorite heroine tho. I think her personality is part of NA archetype, full of angst and insecurity.
Louis McNally...just like your mix of alpha and beta hero. Nearing beta hero, tho. Refreshing to read his attitude not to "I'm Tarzan, hear me roarrr!!". What he did to Roxy is because he care, and I always like a hero that chase his woman. I just wish he's not too.. Idk...two goody legs? I like his twin sisters, Lena and Celeste. They are crazy, they are scene stealer and I want to see they have more parts in the story.
The secondary characters like Roxy's roommate, Abby and Honey (funny that all their name rhymes!) and Louis's friend Ben and Russell make the story rich, but just that. There was some hint about who will be the next MCs for next books, and boy, when I read blurb from book #2 and book #3, it's obvious that Tessa Bailey wrote this series especially for Roxy & Louis and co.
I hear that Tessa Bailey is the queen of "dirty talker heroes" and she write so many steamy sex scenes. Boy, that was right! Idk how much level of hotness that NA genre can handle, but Chase Me sure is HOT. Hawt-until-it-melting-your-pants hot. No kidding. She did'nt hold back when writing sex scenes between Roxy and Louis apparently *chuckle*. And I enjoy reading those scenes. Heh, sometimes I want to read a sex scene that left me hot and bothered. And Tessa Bailey nailed it :p
Aside from that, like what I said, Chase Me is pretty much your average NA, and by average, just angst throw here and there, misunderstanding and so much insecurities. Still I enjoy read it, since this one can be read in just of few hours. Just beware of the angst. Now, I need some reading material that will give me smile and warm fuzzies. Maybe I'll read some funny mangas, lol! If you like NA that so hot its bordering erotic, maybe you will love this one....more

Because there's nothing new under the sun.

Reduce the stars from 3 to 2 stars, because I just realize that I got dejavu when read Forgotten Sins. After I check my old review, I see some similarities between Forgotten Sins and The Darkest Hours by Maya Banks. The similarities are:
- both MCs are married couple - both MCs were separated, while the cause is different. In Forgotten Sins, Sean leave Josie without explanation for 2 years. In The Darkest Hours Ethan think his wife, Rachel is dead, and find that she had been alive but held hostage in Colombia. - amnesia plot! In Forgotten Sins, it's Sean, The Darkest Hours is Rachel who had it. - Both hero are alpha males and treated their wife as "fragile" things. => common trope, tho. But the way they act...almost the same. - Both heroine surrounded by the hero's brothers at once. Josie with Dean brothers, Rachel with Kelly brothers. - Both have same genre, even Forgotten Sins have some scifi part on it - Both also first book in a series that have an organization of sort.
And so, tell me, is it coincidence? Or originality doesn't mean anything at all? I know that there's nothing new under the sun, but the similarities between Forgotten Sins and The Darkest Hours is too much. Also, I wonder if it's just me who recognize this too-blatant-similarities
I will not bother to read the rest.
My original review about Forgotten Sins, can be read below:
Sooo..unpopular opinion here, since I see that so many GR friends raved about this one. Sadly, I just find this okay, and some tings kinda grated my nerves
Tbh, I'm so tired when reading the heroine, Josie, back and fro. First, she want to divorce her husband, Sean. Then, she melting again said husband and start to have sex afterward. Well...it's logic actually. Two years separation will do that to any normal woman, and add it with the thrill or adrenaline after being chased by bad guy. But, after knowing Sean have too much secret, she want to part again. Aaaand... when Sean save her, she goes "Ohmygawd!! My husband save my lifeeee!!That's give a whole new perspective. I know I love him. Screw the divorce! I don't care with the danger!!". Add it with Josie is an orphan, so she had been alone for her entire life. She want a family! So bad! While it might be the author attempt to reader to justify Josie's action and reaction..I just...can't even.
Conclusion: Too.Much.Angst.And.Drama
Also there was an attempt to romanticized Stockholm Syndrome, even the h/H, already married. Sean give a whole new meaning to alpha macho with stalker tendency. Really... *rolling eyes*. I guess I grow tired with alpha hero that act so bossy, try to defend their women, even said women are dependent. But, noooo, it's not romantic if alpha male don't act like a "I'm Tarzan!!! Hear me roarrrrr!!!" first. I will stick with mix of alpha and beta male who can appreciated their female, not try to bossing her around and keeping so many secret, thank you.
I also don't like the "damsel in distress" subplot near the end to make a climax of the story *rolling eyes*. Action start too late and the ending wrapped in a rushed way. Add it with an unnecessary subplot, when Josie found out who ransacked her office at first place. I don't know why insert this subplot, since I think at first it will connect with Sean's past. The connection just barely a scratch, and imho, why not just concentrated to the super soldier instead? The villain also too two dimensional and lack of depth. It's like the author write them in the sake of being evil with add curse & malicious words that when I read it, I'm just snort. There was a part when the villain threat Josie with rape and torture, and I just "dude, enough already. You talk to much for a bad guy." I have a feeling this part was influenced by "bad guy trope that talk much less action" in the Hollywood movie.
Do I want to read the next? I admit, the idea of super soldiers who genetically enhanced is good, the suspense is great, and even Josie kinda like damsel in distress somehow, I like that in some scene she show her backbone. Just, not too asskick like what I want her to be. The brotherhood of Dean brothers is what you can expect to find in this kind of story, so it's nothing special. I have read a much better relationship. Zanetti indeed can write a good suspense story, but I wish she leave all the angst, cut some drama, and focus to the suspense. So, I don't think I will read the next book in the short time. Sadly, will give this series a low priority in my TBR list....more
Again, unpopular opinion, but Romancing the Duke is just for-shit-and- giggle kind of book. The story is too simple, formulaic and silly for my3 stars
Again, unpopular opinion, but Romancing the Duke is just for-shit-and- giggle kind of book. The story is too simple, formulaic and silly for my taste. I bought this because I love the cover. Where the heroine just standing, no body part flashes (which is soo amusing and silly in so many historical romance cover books out there), and her smirk, promised me a story full of mayhem and mischief. Add it with unusual blurb and I'm sold.
After finish reading, yeah, the story indeed have mayhem and mischief, but too much liberties that Ms Dare throw I don't know if its historically correct. Romancing the Duke kinda like a re-telling of Beauty and Beast tale, only Izzy is a daughter of famous novelist. The rest of the story is pretty much how Izzy try to claim her castle from Duke of Rothbury, Ransom Vane. Start with insta lust, they begin to understanding each other, Izzy try to heal Ransom's heart wound, yada, yada, and bam...the End. Pretty usual and I don't mind with the simple. I did crave some simple story that not dark, angst, full drama and violence. The problem is, this book is too bright, like unicorn try to puke some rainbow...
Okay, that sound harsh anyway. The strength of this book is the characters. While Izzy and Ransom (gaah, always type random!) are formulaic, I like their witty banter and interaction. I like the secondary characters too, like Duncan, Ransom's valet and Ms Abigail Pelham, Izzy's friend. The sex also dirty and steamy for historical romance. BUT, the Moranglian thing, which is a fandom from the The Goodnight Tales, a work by Izzy's father is too much! I don't know what era this book set, since I rarely read historical romance, but is this fandom thingie exist in that era? They are too silly, too...Idk what to say, just rubbed me the wrong way.
I also think that somehow Ms Dare want to defend romance, that imho, not necessary. There's no need to defend romance in front of people that dislike romance, because it's nonsense! I love romance, I do. I cant count how many times I defend my favorite genre and in the end I feel exhausted I didn't give a damn. A romance reader might be aggree with Ms Dare's insight about romance and fairy tale, but I feel it's a little bit forced.
Imho, the revelation about the Goodnight Tales is a little bit meh for me, and I think Ransom is not groveling much. This book have some funny moments, tho. Izzy is quirky and it's clear that she's the foundation of this book. It just the last part that make me reduce the star, add it with the liberties and some silly part that I think not funny.
I guess, if you want a light, full of humor, and unusual historical romance, you can try Romancing the Duke.

Yah, sayangnya lagi sih, chemistry Cecile sama Tristan kayak maksa. Dari yang antagonis, berantem mulu, Tristan songong mulu walau aslinya pura - pura, lalu langsung menyatakan cinta satu sama lain. Yaelah anak muda :|.
And yes, totally can see this as manga, but novel? Not so much. Terlalu formulaik walau pemecahan misterinya sebenarnya bagus, tapi beberapa kasus terlalu "kuno" kesannya.
Gitu aja terus, rinse and repeat. -__-"
Kenikmatan membaca jadi berkurang deh,
Ember sih kalau After Dinner Mysteries buat fun aja...ga usah mikir keras.
Wickedly Dangerous is the first installment of Baba Yaga series and also debut novel from Deborah Blake, whom, before this one writing mostly 3 stars
Wickedly Dangerous is the first installment of Baba Yaga series and also debut novel from Deborah Blake, whom, before this one writing mostly non fiction book. I pick this one because it's rare to read about Baba Yaga as main character, since usually this crone often portrayed as side characters or because her menace characteristic, a villain. Baba Yaga in Blake's world is not the crone that people used to know, but a title for a witch that kinda like "paranormal police". It's feel unique at the first time tho, but then I realize that Wickedly Dangerous is just an okay read for me.
I feel that it's hard to connect with Barbara Yager at first. She act though just for "though heroine trope" sake. She feels aloof, and while this is understable because Barbara herself said that she was not good with emotion, that make her feel...cold. I don't like a character that make me struggle to connect with, because that's mean I can't sympathize with her/him. Her romance with the hero, Liam McClellan also feel...awkward.
The world building feel too light. We have Otherworld, yes. But other books have it too. We have Queen and King that ruled this Otherworld together, but I don't know, they feel light. Maybe I read too much about the Seelie, Unseelie and their cruel court, and I expect the Queen will be cruel. I don't feel it there. Actually, it can be nice, but I feel something missing. Each time I read about the Queen, I remember the White Queen from Alice movie. A quirky character but easily forgettable.
The best part for Wickedly Dangerous is the small town setting. The conflict with the town's folks is nicely done, not going overboard and I can accept it for a tight-knit society, their reaction to Barbara for being a stranger is well-written. The plot can be slow sometimes and make me lost interest for many times, but the mystery is what keep me going. Sadly, the villain fall into two dimensional characters and I feel that the Russian myth just being here for accessories. I want them to be explored thoroughly, tho. The three Riders that help Barbara is okay too, your standard manly macho brotherhood, although they provide a good comic relief. My favorite character is Chudo Yudo, a Russian dragon that turned into pitbull dog, whose humor make me smile. Alas he's just become a pet, and I wish he get more "dragon-revealed" time.
For a paranormal romance...not much sexy times. The first time is..fade to black *rolling eyes*, the second time is I just don't care since Barbara and Liam relationship is just awkward. It's not that paranormal romance (or UF) must have sexy times that scream"so hot! I want to fan myself". In the other side, I feel grateful for the lack of sexiness.
This book indeed suffer from being "first book in series" syndrome, and also because this is debut, so many aspect that feel lacking. But, first impression is a must, and Wickedly Dangerous is just okay for me, so to read the next book is not my priority this time. ...more

I mean, kayak pe3 bintang
Kadung beli bukunya yang kedua, jadi ya musti lanjut :D
Mary Russell ini.. kok suara dia beneran kayak suara si pengarang ya? I mean, kayak perasaannya Laurie R King terhadap Sherlock Holmes. Jadi kayak semacam surat cinta begitu.
Tapi overall sih lumayan kok...more
It's been almost 2 years since I read Assassin's Gambit and I like the premise that I didn't hesitant to bought Spy's Honor. The problem is, wh4 stars
It's been almost 2 years since I read Assassin's Gambit and I like the premise that I didn't hesitant to bought Spy's Honor. The problem is, when you read the first book a long long time ago, you will miss some detail. Spy's Honor is a prologue to Assassin's Gambit and I admit, I'm a little bit confused when read this one. Spy's Honor is about Rhianne, Imperial Princess of Kjall and Jan-Torres aka Janto, the Crown Prince of Mosari. Both are cameos in the first book but play important role. It's not necessary to read Assassin's Gambit first. In fact, I will read this one then Assassin's Gambit.
The story is back when Lucien, the hero of book 1 is not emperor yet. His tyrant father is invading Mosar, and Janto is desperate to find a way to claim his country back. As a spy he enter the palace and instead finding his lost spy, he meet Rhianne first. What begin as a languange lesson between Janto and Rhianne turn to something more. They begin to fall to each other, with Janto still hide his true identity. When fate cruelly separate them and Kjall succeded in invading Mosar, Janto must take his responsibility as the heir of the crown to claim what his. Even its mean he must betray Rhianne.
What I praise most from Spy's Honor is Raby's ability to mix fantasy, romance, intrigue and politic with ease. All mixed in perfect balance and produce a good read. Even I admit that some part can be so slow. The part when Rhianne and Janto exchange about languange might be boring to read, but on the other side it show that languange is one of important element of high fantasy. No map here, but I will set aside for it. No glossarium either, which if there's one it will be nice. The conflict is well written, even the romance part is not silly or too Harlequinesque. Of course there some drama in the end, especially when Rhianne know about Janto's true identity. But its handle well.
My problem maybe is Rhianne. Maybe because I think Vitala, the heroine from first book is so badass, Rhianne seems pale compared to her. Sure Rhianne is strong, being rebel and challenge his uncle, the current emperor to save her loved one, but in some part she strike me as naive. Sometimes too compassionate too, but what bothering me is her naivete. As for the hero, I like Janto a lot. He's a beta hero, not alpha, not act like "I'm Tarzan, hear me roaaar, but can be commanding when situation need him. Janto is a shroud mage, with ability to make himself and his target-if he desire- invicible. A cool ability (and yeah, it will show in what I think the steamiest sex scene in this book, ehm), add it with his familiar, the ferret named Sashi, make him an unforgettable hero.
If you want to read a fantasy romance full of intrigue, politic manuveur but crave your happy ending, Spy's Honor is a must read....more

Masih 16 tahun udah kebelet nikah aja sama Sebastian. Cuma karena cinta aja. Byuuuh, pas umur segitu, kayaknya saia malah asyik main - main sama temen. Nicola bahkan ga mau nunggu sampai 2 tahun. Duh, seandainya dia tahu apa yang bakal terjadi pas malam pertama.... :X
Siapa dia? Well kudu baca bukunya dong :D
Sayangnya lagi, GPU ini emang suka deh nerbitin buku ngga lengkap. Udah yang diterbitin buku ketiga duluan (Till Death Do Us Apart - Sampai Maut Memisahkan Kita), buku yang pertama, If Looks Could Kill malah ngga diterbitin. Belum lagi terjemahannya yang bikin kepala rada senut - senut. Untungnya sih, beli ini murah banget, cuma 10ribu rupiah. Jadi ga rugi - rugi amat lah ya :D
I don't have the slightest idea about the book since I had give away my physical copy. So, apparently the story is not memorable enough and 3,5 stars
