В случая съм съгласна с комика Тери, че това е най-вероятно Католическата църква, която пресява купища оцелели антични архиви, за да намери “правилните”.
Келти, германи, даки, готи, вандали и хуни определено имат по-сложни портрети от общия (често несправедлив) знаменател “варвари”. Но свидетелствата за тях са предимно на враговете им, или на по-късен папски Рим, и са обяснимо удобни. А колоната на Траян, обект днес на масово туристическо възхищение, е в действителност паметник за геноцида над даките, който е бил отбелязан с поредния бляскав триумф.
Проблемът е, че Тери Джоунс не е много по подробностите и по последователността, а и определено си има любимци, които гали с бомбастични изявления - да, това са гордите обитатели на днешните британски острови, от които просто по-добри няма. Куп любопитни анекдоти (често със спорна автентичност) доукрасяват нишката на “сюжета”. Допирните точки със съвременността са доста особени и по-скоро водят до поводи за преосмисляне, отколкото до директен резерв от “мерки”. Биърд за пореден път посочва колко пълна с пропаганда на деня, неточна информация и лични пристрастия е познатата ни история в оцелелите източници. Истината рядко е очевидна и понякога липсва напълно, а диренето и е труден процес, който малцина историци се осмеляват да предприемат - и скептичната Биърд е от тях.
Мери Биърд решава да се захване не с отделните личности, а с голямата картина и с тълкуване на външните прояви, видими за всички. Тематичният подход обаче за пореден път е и голямата и слабост. Пълният и отказ от линейна структура носи елемент на хаотичност и загуба на фокус, както и липса на усещане кои всъщност са били тези императори. Мери Биърд говори за “императора” като сборна институционална фигура, за която всъщност само си мислим, че знаем достатъчно, разчитайки на често недостоверни или косвени свидетелства. Но тази сборна фигура в един момент се оказа за мен дим и мъгла, крайно смътна, плод по-скоро на субективните интерпретации на Биърд. Не че не съм съгласна с голяма част от тях! Но в изобилието от думи структурата отново и отново се губи, те все повече замаскират или са самоцелни, отколкото да разкриват и образоват. А и в тях също прозират липси и пропуски (може би с цел пестене на обем), както и ненужни общи приказки в част от подтемите. За сметка на това в различните глави присъстват несекващи повторения на едни и същи събития и анекдоти - защо просто не вмъкна нови? Или смята читателя за толкова неопитен, че да загуби нишката без изрично натъртване?
Есеистичният, нелинеен подход е много удачен за вече запознатите с имперската хронология и е ценен с обърнатата си перспектива и нови, касаещи днешния ден, въпроси. Обаче за тепърва прохождащи в темата, подозирам, книгата ще е малко озадачаваща, или просто ще мине пред очите им като бърз, повърхностен, но ярко ефектен сериал на “Нетфликс”.
Биърд за пореден път решава да приключи разказа си с 235 г. сл. н. е. (доколкото изобщо има хронология, според мен такава отсъства), което отново ме кара да се намръщя на силната избирателност. Не съм съгласна с нито един от твърде кратко изложените мотиви за такова решение.
Но наистина книгата в крайна сметка е есе - приятно и елегантно, но не особено изчерпателно, а и порядъчно субективно избирателно. За да бъде истински добра, трябваше да е или много по-кратка (подробна статия), или доста по-дълга (за да подплати някои от съвсем общите, смътни и повърхностно засегнати или гъмжащи от повторения подтеми).

Самите Венеция и Генуа, алчно вкопчени в провалянето на търговския си конкурент, заслужено обричат и собственото си бъдеще с късогледството си.
Самите византийци никак не са невинни - те се разпределят на властващи кланове, всеки от който граби трон, земи и данъци до дупка. Тези мафиотски кланове предпочитат да обрекат последния си шанс да прогонят надигащата се турска заплаха в битката при Манцикерт, отколкото да сформират поне временна обща лига срещу опасността. Резултатите са видими.
——— Много може да се разсъждава върху Византия. Нейната история е удивително преплетена с нашата - България е първата независима държава, която цъфва в задния двор на империята и отказва да се разкара оттам, като на моменти сама храни амбиции за Константинопол. И е също толкова късогледа за големите заплахи, вкопчена в дребнави боричкания.
У нас има добра византоложка и османистка школа, най-малко поради историческата и географската близост. Западняците на свой ред пренебрегват Византия или като Едуард Гибън - открито я презират, без ни най-малко да я разбират. Други като Кенет Кларк стигат дотам в невежото си презрение, че дори (в неговата книга за цивилизацията) я считат за ненужна бележка под линия, която нямала нищо общо с Европа и и била по-чужда даже от исляма (?!). Тези високомерни сноби обаче задават дълго време тона в историческото възприятие, и тяхното манипулативно, пропагандно опростяване ни лишава от ценно познание.
Мутафчиев, Острогорски и Норуич са представители на обратното течение. Без навирен нос и гръмовно громене, те възкресяват над 1000 изгубени години, и то само повърхностно, без задълбаване.
Лекциите на Мутафчиев са ценни с погледа си към иконоборството. Завършени през 1943 г., малко преди смъртта на професора, те са исторически документ сами по себе си. На светския поглед от първата половина на 20 век, но и на незабравения гняв от съюзническата и първата световна войни. Мутафчиев се впуска в излишно громене и морализаторстване в доста моменти, а е и откровен женомразец. Но е и ерудиран познавач, който си знае работата и успява в други моменти да е доста проницателен и аналитичен, правещ косвени паралели с новото време. Лекциите приключват с 1204 г.
Острогорски като че ли е по-премерен. Но това в само привидно. Писал през 60-те, у него дреме онази мъглява руска православна мистика, неотървала се от бляна си за Третия Рим. Острогорски замита под килима всичко иконоборско или сектантско, което не съответства на официалната (днешна) религиозна доктрина. Просто избягва да пояснява някои моменти - избира премълчаването. Не че обемът му позволява да се шири, но предпочитанията са видни. Ужасяващо неадекватен на моменти е родният превод. Не знам от коя година е, но “Прозорец” са били жестоко немарливи в редакцията не просто на имена и транслитерации, а на значение на думите! Има цели изречения без никакъв ясен смисъл просто защото преводачката не е имала представа от материята и си е измисляла значения.
Норуич (тук , тук и тук ) е най-балансиран, може би защото е по-съвременен. Той също тълкува и дава оценки, но доста по-умерено, и някак не така яростно като Мутафчиев или подмолно като Острогорски. Недостатъкът при Норуич е, че той често се увлича в западния контекст, но не е прекалено. И уви, подобно на горните двама, не намира време за културата и изкуството.

Авторите от по-стари времена пък осакатяват историите си с намесата на по-късния християнски морал, като и тук вариациите са много - но винаги във вреда на стария мит.
Заглавието съвсем не е от най-лошите варианти и ми беше приятно за четене.

Амбицията не е водещата го сила, нито завистта или властта. Този владетел на смъртта е доста голям пазител на живота.
Персефона е момиче, насила натикано в клетката на очакванията, задълженията и нормите. Тя е дотолкова откъсната от реалния свят и хората, че отвличането и носи единствено ползи и и позволява най-сетне да се превърне в личност.
Деметра е най-проблематична, и далеч не едностранчива. Тук тя е представена като свръх контролираща, страховито нарцистична майка, която не е в състояние и ожесточено отказва да види детето си като автономно, отделно, различно човешко същество. Тя обсебва това дете до пълно задушаване, превръща го в свой - буквално - безименен придатък и свирепо унищожава всеки признак на индивидуалност.
Затова и отношението на Персефона към майка и от един момент нататък може да изглежда на пръв поглед безсърдечно, но е просто опит за самосъхранение и за предпазване.

Древните гърци, копирани от римляните, които също имат свой оригинален дял от лаконични мъдрости, до западните канонници и учени от средновековието, са неизчерпаем извор на трудно натрупано, често губено по пътищата на историята знание и предупреждение. Контекстът е особено важен за някои фрази, които често се употребяват в ежедневието като клише, и значението им се губи или преиначава. Или директно служи за пропаганда.
Най-интересна ми беше историята на фразата “Човек е мярка на всички неща…”, която обаче си има продължение, което е в неудобната зона на релативизма и субективизма и е далеч от възхвалата - “…- за съществуващите, че съществуват, и за несъществуващите, че не съществуват.”

Но и във втората книга от трилогията Елоди Харпър, за моя огромна радост, не отстъпва нито сантиметър в посока на анемичната, безхарактерна и лицемерна захарасаност, която напоследък е запазена марка на почти всичко, рекламирано като исторически фикшън или “преразказан” (разбирай взет наготово за зле притоплена аматьорска употреба) мит.
Във втората част сюжетът се съсредоточва почти изцяло върху Амара. [image] Тя се е изкачила на висока цена едно стъпало нагоре в хранителната верига като метреса на помпейски богаташ. У нея все така продължават да се борят свирепият и инстинкт за оцеляване с вродената и съпричастност към онеправданите и безсилните. Всеки ден я изправя пред нови въпроси и трудни решения, за които единствен правилен отговор липсва, защото самото устройство на римското общество изисква хищническото отношение да е норма.
Силно се надявам последната част, която е предвидена за ноември, да поднесе достоен завършек на тези чудесни две части. Но имам предчувствие, че ще е точно така, защото в годината на действието изригва Везувий. Нямам търпение.

Суровият чар от първите две части е напълно изгубен и пропилян в края на тази трилогия. Писането в сегашно време в конкретната книга изобщо не работи, повторенията изобилстват и досаждат на всяка страница, а читателят е третиран като идиот, комуто непрекъснато трябва да се напомня кой какъв е и какво е направил в предните две книги. Амара е антипатична и безчувствена (отчаяните авторски твърдения как страда са просто кухи) и без грам вътрешна емоция. Елоди Харпър разказва безлично и назидателно, сякаш отмята задължителни точки, и напълно е забравила, че разказва история за живи хора с куп грехове и недостатъци в една неблагодарна за бедните и поробените епоха. На моменти Амара вади реплики от 21 век, които са изумително не на място в Помпей от 79 г. Краят донякъде възвръща част от вълнението от предните две книги - но твърде малко и твърде късно.
Заключението на трилогията е стерилно, грижливо зачистено от всяко двусмислие и оттенък, и клиширано - и с нищо не се отличава от масовката бързо забравими четива за прелистване в градския транспорт и на плажа....more

Една от забележителностите на днешния Помпей е лупанарът. Значи както “вълча бърлога”, така и “публичен дом”. Сградата е на централно кръстовище в някогашния град, и похлупакът от вулканична пепел я е запазил отлично. Порнографските рисунки над стаите на проститутките не са особено интересни. Самите килийки, където е кипял нощен труд, обаче са. Размерът им е горе долу колкото едно днешно съвсем малко коридорче. Прозорци няма и е тъмно като в рог. Най-зловещото обаче е леглото във всяка от тези дупки. То е издълбан цял каменен блок, в единия край с издатина за възглавница. Хем евтино, хем на практика вечно. Рядко съм виждала нещо толкова зловещо, съпътствало нечие ежедневие.

И все пак тази адска дупка е била средище на живот, а проститутките са били най-често робини, капка от необятното и безлико робско море, населявало славната римска империя и съставлявало важна част от производствения и инвентар от говорещи предмети.
Рядко срещам напоследък оригинален и смел сюжет в заглавие, предназначено за забавление, без претенции за литература, но случаят е точно такъв. Никаква сладникавост. Който очаква чистоплътна и благопристойна романтика с герои-захаринчета, да си я търси другаде. Всъщност изобщо няма романтика. Ако някой очаква политкоректност, също е сбъркал заглавието. YA също не е бил популярен в Рим, не е популярен и в тази книга - реалността и историята не са стерилна и безопасна жанрова категория. Жанрът тук е само “отлично разказана история”.
Героите са всичко друго, но не и окаяни души от сълзлива мелодрама. Хвърлени в канавката, те се борят за късчето живот със зъби и нокти, с нищожно малкото, което е на тяхно разположение. Някои са жертви, някои са палачи - съзнателни или неосъзнати, често категориите неразличимо се преплитат.
Петте героини, населяващи лупанара, са с внимателно изградени индивидуалности, с много уважение и съпричастност, и дълбоко реалистични, намиращи време и за малко хумор, и дори за приятелство насред адското си ежедневие. Провокиращ е и гангстерът-социопат, менажиращ този процъфтяващ бизнес с тела. Истински близки са всички герои, населяващи Помпей - и бедните, и богатите, и робите, и господарите, и надяващите се, и уморените, и арогантните, и безжалостните. Помпей просто е жив, какъвто действително е бил, а не какъвто ни се иска да бъде.
Амара, Виктория, Дидо, Креса, Беронис, а по-късно и Британика, са различните, болезнено искрени лица на живота, който е по-добре да не се пада на никого и да остане в страшните мигове от историята.
Единствено ми е мъчно, че третата част (втората вече е на четеца ми) ще излезе чак през ноември.

Хареса ми етруската гледна точка и лицемерието на римските добродетели. Нещо, което героинята бавно осъзнава, докато заема активно място в обществото, каквото Рим никога не би предоставил на жена, и вижда вредата от милитаристично украсените предрасъдъци. Етруската култура е малко известна и малко популярна. Не мога да преценя колко достоверно е представена, струва ми се, че фикцията преобладава.
Героинята ми харесваше доста в първата част, но във втората рязко изглупя за сметка на сензационността и фикцията. Героят не беше разкрит в детайли, та ми останаха доста въпросителни. Но иначе и двамата ми бяха симпатични, и любовната история беше приятна.

Ревю Едно от нещата, които обожавам в обзорните заглавия, са цветните картинки. Тук няма такива.
Сега сериозно, авторката е подготвила за масовия читател едно ясно структурирано, прегледно изложение, обхващащо периода между 4000 г.пр.н.е и 312 г. Определено амбициозна цел само за един том. Мда, и Бауер настоява да използва преди Хр., а не преди н. е.…
Чудесен е фактът, че Бауер не се ограничава само до древен Египет, Гърция и Рим, а разгръща доста мащабен обзор за Двуречието (земите между Тигър и Ефрат), древна Персия, китайските и индийските царства, културите в Мала Азия и Леванта. Фригийци и финикийци присъстват звено с шумери, египтяни, еламити, арийци, дорийци, йонийци. Античната история в тази по-облагородена и богата трактовка не се ограничава само до храмовете в Карнак и Акропола, което е само от полза за читателя.
Бауер обаче също не успява да избегне част от капаните по темата, като - слава Богу - надутата европоцентричност не е сред тях. Тъй като древният свят е наистина древен, оцелелите свидетелства не са толкова много, а когато са налични, често си противоречат или дори са определено ненадеждни. Древният свят е истинско предизвикателство за рационалния подход от днешния ден, не на последно място и защото тази форма на светоусещане в онези епохи далеч не се е радвала на всеобща популярност.
Така че Бауер логично се обръща към достигналите до нас, и оформили културата ни, митове като Махабхарата, Старият Завет, Илиадата, древногръцкия пантеон, сагата за Гилгамеш. Макар и ненадеждни откъм фактология, или ако все пак предоставят зрънце история, то тълкуванието и е безнадеждно размито от изискванията на тогавашната власт или бореща се за налагане религиозна/ социална доктрина - все пак те са едни от малкото съвременници на онези далечни места и отглас на отминали събития и сътресения. Бауер обаче ги разказва, сякаш са реални събития и реален заместител на историята!
Това, което също силно ме раздразни и унищожи ефекта от прочетеното, беше избирателното и “доверчиво” (т.е. представено като чиста монета) вмъкване на библейските истории, включително съвършено недоказания Изход. Старият Завет, за разлика от Корана, съдържа известни исторически отгласи. Бауер обаче доста очеизвадно ги преекспонира като достоверни исторически събития с дословни цитати (които са с ужасния старовремски език, който да ме извини Светият Синод, но в българския си вариант никак не допринася за вникване в посланията на Стария Завет, а пасажите, четени на английски, са ми в пъти по-ясни). Например в главата за предполагаемия Изход присъства съвсем явна спекулация какво били мислили египтяните по въпроса, и понеже би ги представило в неблагоприятна светлина, не го били документирали никъде!
На този фон не мога да не се възхитя на Съма Циен, който е цитираният основен източник за Китай, който при всичките си украси и митологични референции, е бил явно доста фактологичен за времето си. На други места Бауер вмъква митологичен преразказ като заместител на липсата на достоверни исторически данни, с много неясни, бегли и уклончиви предположения какво би могло да значи това в исторически аспект - типичен пример е Махабхарата.
От друга страна Бауер може да бъде и елегантно скептична - но твърде избирателно, и когато не е свързано със Стария Завет. Например не забравя - удачно - да напомни колко ненадеждни са римските историци, възхваляващи несъществували стари добродетели, тъй като се опитват да обслужат далеч по-късни политически римски доктрини и да “възпитават” младото поколение. Така ведро пропуска факта, че книгите от Стария и Новия Завет са с абсолютно същото предназначение. Библеистите са датирали с прилична точност стария Завет, като част от “събитията” са описани стотици години по-късно при политически обстоятелства, изискващо съответното “тълкуване”. Това тук не се споменава.
Източниците, ползвани от Бауер, са изцяло англоезични. Разбираемо това е отдавна наложилото се ново есперантно, но все пак за толкова мащабно заглавие лично аз биха очаквала малко повече.
Липсата на по-силно акцентиране и откроява е на личности и събития, макар и за сметка на други, също е отличителна черта на стила на Бауер, което води до пресищане и скука. На моменти тя толкова добросъвестно изкълвава в стенографско резюме (поради ограничението в обема на книгата) безброй имена и случки в рамките на две изречения, че докарват световъртеж, без по никакъв начин да са запомнящи се или отличаващи се от всички останали в същата секция. Пропускането им за сметка на по-силно акцентиране върху по-ключови елементи единствено би внесло значително подобрение и би засилило интереса.
Да стигна и до картинките. Да, липсата им дразни. Старото клише, че една картинка често казва повече от много думи, всъщност е вярно. Бауер не използва добро онагледяване със запомнящи се образи. Скучните и с нищо незабележителни черно-бели снимки не допринасят с нищо за по-доброто разбиране. Положението с картите е по-добро, макар на моменти да се повтарят. Табличките пък са супер.
Цялостно - нелош учебник или справочник, далеч не от най-интересните, не е и от най-скучните, дава представа, макар и не безпристрастна. Но е на светлинни години от въздействието на много по-непретенциозни, много по-стари, по-малко библейско и религиозно центрирани, далеч не така изчерпателни и нелинейно структурирани заглавия като “Когато слънцето беше бог” на Зенон Кошидовски. При Кошидовски всичко е запомнящо се! И плаче за преиздаване. А за Бауер се съмнявам, че след 5-10 години някой изобщо ще я помни в масовката от подобни заглавия за общо ползване....more

Юстиниан I почти успява да възроди старата римска империя и построява най-бляскавата църква в света - Света София, като кодифицира в по-модерна версия старото римско право. Ираклий и потомците му подемат решително усилие за прочистване на християнството от суеверия и превръщането му в едно предимно вътрешно изживяване, забраняващо олицетворяването и бъркането му с изображения като иконите. Векове преди реформацията на запад. Но сблъсъкът между светска и религиозна власт завършва с поражение за първата. За разлика от Рим и Запада обаче върховната власт във Византия остава неизменно светска. Византия удържа приливните вълни на нововъзникналия и войнстващ ислям, които неколкократно се разбиват в стените на Константинопол. Но победа няма, има само оцеляване - Северна Африка и Сирия са завинаги изгубени за империята. Балканите също - от колонизацията на славяни и българи. Както и Италия. Залезът започва да се спуска окончателно в мига, в който империята се отказва от защитните си механизми. Тези мафиотски кланове предпочитат да обрекат последния си шанс да прогонят надигащата се турска заплаха в битката при Манцикерт, отколкото да сформират поне временна обща лига срещу опасността. Тези високомерни сноби обаче задават дълго време тона в историческото възприятие, и тяхното манипулативно, пропагандно опростяване ни лишава от ценно познание.
Мутафчиев, Острогорски и Норуич са представители на обратното течение. Без навирен нос и гръмовно громене, те възкресяват над 1000 изгубени години, и то само повърхностно, без задълбаване.

Не че обемът му позволява да се шири, но предпочитанията са видни. Ужасяващо неадекватен на моменти е родният превод. Не знам от коя година е, но “Прозорец” са били жестоко немарливи в редакцията не просто на имена и транслитерации, а на значение на думите! Има цели изречения без никакъв ясен смисъл просто защото преводачката не е имала представа от материята и си е измисляла значения.

Залезът започва да се спуска окончателно в мига, в който империята се отказва от защитните си механизми. Търговията е поета от новоизгряващите венецианци и генуезци, а византийският флот, владял Средиземноморието, изчезва, за да бъде заменен - срещу заплащане и отказ от суверинитет - от венецианския флот.
Истинският край на империята не идва от изток и селджукските турци, а от запад, когато през 1204 г. Четвъртият кръстоносен поход разграбва и оплячкосва Константинопол. Впоследствие Византия е разкъсана на части, някои от които поделени между Венецианската република (която се държи като войнстващ търговски концерн) и част от кръстоносците. Империята никога не се съвзема от този удар и последвалото е бавна агония, която обрича също България и Сърбия. Последните две държави изобщо не схващат картинката, за разлика от умния хан Тервел през 8 век, който отива да отбранява Константинопол срещу арабите. Самите Венеция и Генуа, алчно вкопчени в провалянето на търговския си конкурент, заслужено обричат собственото си бъдеще с късогледството си.
Самите византийци никак не са невинни - те се разпределят на властващи кланове, всеки от който граби трон, земи и данъци до дупка. Тези мафиотски кланове предпочитат да обрекат последния си шанс да прогонят надигащата се турска заплаха в битката при Манцикерт, отколкото да сформират поне временна обща лига срещу опасността. Резултатите са видими.

Нейната история е удивително преплетена с нашата - България е първата независима държава, която цъфва в задния двор на империята и отказва да се разкара оттам, като на моменти сама храни амбиции за Константинопол. И е също толкова късогледа за големите заплахи, вкопчена в дребнави боричкания.
У нас има добра византоложка и османистка школа, най-малко поради историческата и географската близост. Западняците на свой ред пренебрегват Византия или като Едуард Гибън - открито я презират, без ни най-малко да я разбират. Други като Кенет Кларк стигат дотам в невежото си презрение, че дори (в неговата книга за цивилизацията) я считат за ненужна бележка под линия, която нямала нищо общо с Европа и и била по-чужда даже от исляма (?!). Тези високомерни сноби обаче задават дълго време тона в историческото възприятия, и тяхното манипулативно, пропагандно опростяване ни лишава от ценно познание.
Мутафчиев, Острогорски и Норуич са представители на обратното течение. Без навирен нос и гръмовно громене, те възкресяват над 1000 изгубени години, и то само повърхностно, без задълбаване.
Лекциите на Мутафчиев са ценни с погледа си към иконоборството. Завършени през 1943 г., малко преди смъртта на професора, те са исторически документ сами по себе си. На светския поглед от първата половина на 20 век, но и на незабравения гняв от съюзническата и първата световна войни. Мутафчиев се впуска в излишно громене и морализаторстване в доста моменти, а е и откровен женомразец. Но е и ерудиран познавач, който си знае работата и успява в други моменти да е доста проницателен и аналитичен, правещ косвени паралели с новото време. Лекциите приключват с 1204 г.
Острогорски като че ли е по-премерен. Но това в само привидно. Писал през 60-те, у него дреме онази мъглява руска православна мистика, неотървала се от бляна си за Третия Рим. Острогорски замита под килима всичко иконоборско или сектантско, което не съответства на официалната (днешна) религиозна доктрина. Просто избягва да пояснява някои моменти - избира премълчаването. Не че обемът му позволява да се шири, но предпочитанията са видни. Ужасяващо неадекватен на моменти е родният превод. Не знам от коя година е, но “Прозорец” са били жестоко немарливи в редакцията не просто на имена и транслитерации, а на значение на думите! Има цели изречения без никакъв ясен смисъл просто защото преводачката не е имала представа от материята и си е измисляла значения.
Норуич (тук , тук и тук ) е най-балансиран, може би защото е по-съвременен. Той също тълкува и дава оценки, но доста по-умерено, и някак не така яростно като Мутафчиев или подмолно като Острогорски. Недостатъкът при Норуич е, че той често се увлича в западния контекст, но не е прекалено. И уви, подобно на горните двама, не намира време за културата и изкуството.

Византия, съществувала 1123 години без прекъсване, и много повече, ако броим “стажа” и като част от старата Римска империя, пада под меча на четвъртия кръстоносен поход през 1204 г. Кръстоносците “леко” се отклоняват от първоначалната си цел Египет по простата причина, че няма как да платят на Венеция превоза си, и се озовават в ролята на платена банда наемници. Follow the money. Просъществувалата 57 години Латинска империя разкъсва Византия на деспотства и държави, и век по-късно турците се срещат с обезкръвена сянка на някогашното величие. А много византийци считат тюрбана за по-малко унижение от Римската църква, дошла с кръстоносците. Излишно е да се коментира също така, че разбирателството никога не е било в изобилие на Балканите, и съседите на Византия (сред които и България) се държат подобаващо безочливо и неадекватно.
Не мисля, че сър Джон Джулиъс Норуич е бил фен на “Игра на тронове”, предвид рождената му дата през 1928 г. Но определено е фен на историята като жива тъкан, която диша и трепти и в днешния ден. В тази действително кратка историческа хроника на императори и битки от 330 г. до 1453 г. той скицира “героите” си с техните човешки качества, оцелели нейде сред пристрастността и оскъдността на историческите материали за империята. При проблем с имената, читателят все пак бързо ще се сети, че Византия е управлявана от император без нос, от пленен император, от арменец, от съпруг на бивша куртизанка, от многоженец и от безчет генерали, приели имперските си почести първо върху щитовете на войската си.
Книгата проследява в задъхващ ритъм възхода, апогея и падението на това забележително държавно формирование. Гласовете на първата и втората българска държава, на готи, хуни, кръстоносци, венецианци, перси, турци, представители на Рим и Папството са част от този стар, поизбелял, но зашеметяващ гоблен.
Лично аз все така се обърквам за причините за схизмата между източната и западната църква, а Норуич определено също не е силен в богословието. Покрай приключенията на василевси и генерали не остава и кой знае колко терен за анализ на обществените нрави, икономиката и културата. На моменти се губят и връзките между някои събития, което в този съкратен вариант не ме притесни особено, но ще потърся допълнителни източници на информация, като например по-разширената тритомна поредица на Норуич за Византия, и лекциите на Петър Мутафчиев.
Книгата е писана от любител за любители. Но любителят се отличава с добра култура, толерантност, неограничена от география и епохи, любопитство, хумор и заразяващ ентусиазъм. Византия заслужава да бъде обичана и има много какво да разкаже.

През тези 150 години, които са нищожна наночастица в тъканта на историята, жените влязоха и в сраженията на втората световна война. Умираха, гладуваха, а ако оцелееха, гледаха на тях като на опасни изродени същества, както свидетелства и Светлана Алексиевич. Но се сражаваха. Имаха избор - ужасен, но избор, да не дава Господ да се повтаря.
Троянките (включително жителките на васалните на Троя градове) не са имали този избор - само високата кула, от която да скочат, преди ордите да ги докопат. Понякога дори не и това. Иначе последствията са били ясни: старите и бременните - под ножа, младите - на войниците и после в редиците на обслужващите робини, знатните и млади - като трофеи, една идея по-цивилизовано от обикновените робини.
Трофей е и Бризеида. Като цяло, тя е късметлийка - отредено и е място в Илиадата като предмет на спора между Агамемнон и Ахил. Тази книга е за нея.
Най-добре изпипаният момент са главите в първо лице от гледната точка на Бризеида. Първо идва шокът. Шокът е милостив и е добре да продължи по-дълго, защото притъпява емоциите и сетивата, и прави първите стъпки в безименния робски живот почти поносими. Вцепенението на Бризеида от случващото се е удачно и убедително предадена. Мълчанието и непрестанното наблюдение са единствените оръжия на роба. Той е разменна вещ и като цяло съществуването му се забелязва толкова, колкото днес тостера, кафемашината или отвертката, когато дотрябват.
Трудното започва, когато шокът започва да отминава и шумовете на живота започват да се намесват. Тогава вече идва истинската трагедия. Тогава идва истинското безсилие. Пат Баркър го е напипала, макар и не на 100%.
Гледната точка на Бризеида към Ахил, Патрокъл, Агамемнон, към жените-робини, към цялата кървава каша с троянската война, обхващаща първа и трета част на книгата, на мен лично ми въздействаха. Скръб, която не е скръб; любов, която не е любов; честолюбие, което не е честолюбие; гарнирани с безсилие и неспособност да спреш да живееш. Линиите постоянно се размиват и пренареждат в абсурдни комбинации.
Пат Баркър е допуснала обаче и една груба грешка. Във втора част има немалко глави в безличното трето лице, което цели хвърляне на светлина върху мотивацията на Ахил и Патрокъл. Точно тази част е напълно ненужна, и стои като неприятна кръпка в повествованието. Освен това в нея липсва какъвто и да е емоционален заряд, изчерпвайки се предимно с досаден творчески преразказ на добре известни “събития”. За Ахил не научаваме нищо ново, наблюденията на Бризеида са далеч по-нюансирани.
Личи и също на Пат Баркър, че на моменти силно се изкушава да завърти изказа, вместо да остави разказа прост и оголен като скелет, но по-въздействащ.
Като цяло, романът се оказа по-добър от опасенията ми, със силно начало, хаотична и малко скучна среда и отново набиращ сила завършек. “Кършенето на пръсти”, което доста млади авторки демонстрират, тук почти отсъства, както и патетичните възгласи на псевдофеминизма (защото, извинете дами, но истинският феминизъм приключва докъм 50-те - после е до голяма степен подменен от глезотията). Много се чудих колко звезди да му дам, доста е неравномерен, но тъй като отдавна ми се четеше нещо по старогръцки мотиви, от което да не въртя очи и избухвам в смях още докато прелиствам в книжарницата, ще потупам Пат Баркър по рамото - не е толкова зле, момиче.
