L’edizione italiana (Einaudi Teatro), ristampata per la seconda e ultima volta nel 1981, è fuori commercio, ma con un po’ di fortuna è possibile trovarla in biblioteca.
Uno degli aspetti più interessanti dello stile canettiano è la caratterizzazione dei personaggi tramite il linguaggio, la cosiddetta ‘maschera acustica’. Canetti non abbellisce: se i suoi personaggi parlano in dialetto, lui scriverà in dialetto, se parlano in maniera sgrammaticata, lui scriverà in maniera sgrammaticata, e allo stesso modo, se parlano in maniera pomposamente aulica, lui scriverà in maniera aulica. Ne consegue il classico calderone di stili linguistici che fa o amare o odiare questo autore, ma che in ogni caso lo rende raro e geniale. Gli ottimi traduttori italiani (Luciano e Bianca Zagari per l’opera strettamente letteraria, autobiografia esclusa) si mettono d’impegno a cercare di rendere questa caratteristica, ma senza successo: è il limite della traduzione.
L’opera prende palesemente spunto dal rogo dei libri perpetrato dai nazisti a Berlino il 10 maggio 1933. Anche qui abbiamo un rogo: il rogo dei ritratti, delle foto, la distruzione degli specchi. Il governo totalitario di questo Paese non così tanto immaginario stabilisce per legge che la vanità debba essere bandita, e che pertanto ogni strumento atto a tenerla in vita vada distrutto; per i trasgressori la pena sarà la morte.
Come sempre accade, la massa, abilmente istruita da predicatori vari, accoglie con entusiasmo l’imposizione, tanto da fare del rogo addirittura una festa (una festa, comunque, narcisistica, ci ricorda Luciano Zagari). A distanza di anni, i risultati saranno ovviamente diversi da quelli che ci si aspettava.
Basti pensare che, come è più volte sottolineato nel testo, l’uomo senza la sua immagine è un nulla, perché l’immagine è anche e soprattutto il mezzo attraverso il quale l’uomo arriva a conoscere se stesso. Un tema di grande attualità anche a distanza di novant’anni, in un’epoca di inflazione di immagini. Ebbene, togliamole tutte, eliminiamo ogni possibilità di guardare noi stessi e gli altri: non la vanità elimineremo, ma l’identità.
Si tratta di un’opera molto complessa, con un sostrato filosofico che pare impossibile riesca a stare in poco più di cento pagine, per giunta scritte per lo più in dialetto e nelle quali i protagonisti fanno parte di una sghemba comédie humaine che sguscia fra le mani come un’anguilla.
Auto da fé è forse un testo più bello, eppure questo è più complicato e pregno di significati in ogni singola frase. Significati che, al di là del poco che ho detto, lascio all’interpretazione del singolo lettore, anche perché io stessa, dopo anni che lo leggo e lo rileggo, continuo a stupirmi ogni volta.
Trovo interessante un passo della prefazione di Claudio Magris all’edizione italiana:
«Il grande tema che ricorre in tutta l’opera di Canetti è l’abnorme difesa dell’io contro tutto ciò che minaccia la sua precaria e fittizia consistenza. Canetti è il poeta della difesa, dell’assurda e negativa difesa opposta dal declinante io borghese alla tumultuosa ricchezza della vita – una difesa che equivale a un’autodistruzione, come la muraglia cinese di Karl Kraus la quale, secondo la splendida immagine di Canetti, finisce per soffocare fra le sue pietre l’impero ch’essa vuole difendere dai barbari e che viene assorbito dalla muraglia, sepolto dalla muraglia, ridotto unicamente a muraglia. In tal senso l’opera di Canetti è una parabola, visionaria e lucidissima, del delirio autodistruttivo cui si è votata, nel nostro secolo, la ratio occidentale, sotto l’incalzare della sua crisi. L’esasperata difesa coincide con la morte, così come i cunicoli scavati dalla creatura kafkiana per sfuggire all’ignoto animale che la insegue sottoterra finiscono per andare incontro alle gallerie approntate dal mortale nemico.»

Si tratta dell’unico romanzo di Elias Canetti, che avrebbe dovuto essere il primo di una serie di otto libri soltanto abbozzati che sarebbero andati a comporre quella che l’autore definiva una “comédie humaine dei folli”.
Il protagonista di Auto da fé è Peter Kien, l’”uomo dei libri”, ovvero un uomo che vive dei libri, per i libri, con i libri, attraverso i libri, per il quale nient’altro al mondo esiste o comunque è degno di considerazione. I personaggi secondari non sono affatto tali: ognuno di essi rappresenta una peculiare monomania umana, della quale è completamente intriso. Ogni personaggio, per quanto minore, è magistralmente caratterizzato.
Lo stile riflette la frammentarietà dell’umanità e il rifugiarsi di ognuno nel proprio mondo ristretto. Non esiste narratore univoco, ogni personaggio (di nuovo, anche quelli decisamente minori) si racconta o specula per conto proprio, con il proprio personalissimo punto di vista e il proprio personalissimo linguaggio (la maschera acustica di cui già accennai), venendo così a creare tanti piccoli universi che non possono comunicare fra loro. Scrive Canetti:
«Un giorno mi venne in mente che il mondo non si può più raffigurare come nei romanzi di un tempo, per così dire dal punto di vista di un unico scrittore, il mondo era andato in pezzi, e solo se si aveva il coraggio di mostrarlo nella sua frammentazione era ancora possibile dare di esso un’immagine veritiera. Ma non per questo bisognava accingersi a un libro caotico nel quale nulla fosse più comprensibile; al contrario, bisognava escogitare con grandissimo rigore dei personaggi estremi, come quelli di cui in effetti il mondo era fatto, e questi individui bisognava raffigurarli in tutti i loro eccessi, l’uno accanto all’altro e ognuno separato dall’altro.»
Personaggi estremi, appunto, ossessivi, irreali nella loro totale dedizione alla propria monomania, ma proprio per questo tanto più agghiaccianti. Il procedimento in fondo non è troppo diverso da quello della satira: ogni caratteristica è portata all’estremo per rappresentarne l’assurdità mostruosa. Non c’è affatto comicità, come pure mi è capitato di leggere in qualche recensione; tutt’al più possiamo parlare di grottesco e di deformità (fisica e) spirituale.
Come ebbe a scrivere Magris, «la ragione, che si esaspera per difendersi dall’irrazionale, si nega e si storce in follia».
È questa la tragedia di Peter Kien: giunto a quarant’anni è totalmente incapace di uscire dalla sua “testa senza mondo” e, trovatosi catapultato nel mondo esterno, impazzisce nel tentativo di sfuggire da quell’irrazionale che non conosce e non sa perciò come affrontare. L’intero romanzo è impregnato di delirio, che si fa sempre più soffocante, come un ritmico rullo di tamburi che parte in sordina e man mano si avvicina fino a sovrastare tutto con il suo rumore assordante.
Non me ne vorrete se parlo del finale, dal momento che è perfettamente intuibile dal titolo (titolo italiano, fra l’altro, non corrispondente a quello originale tedesco ma fortemente voluto dall’autore stesso). La conclusione è annullamento senza redenzione, Vernichtung senza spiragli di luce. L’auto da fé conclusivo è intuibile in molti punti del romanzo, a cominciare appunto dal titolo; l’ultimo capitolo fuga ogni dubbio in un crescendo di follia assolutamente eccezionale.
