Scritto per ragazzini di una fascia d'età pre-adolescenziale (scuola media), il protagonista è David detto Scrub, un ragazzino delle medie che vive in Florida ma, per le vacanze estive, viene spedito dalla nonna a Forest Grove, una cittadina dello stato di Washington. La nonna è proprietaria dell'Intergalactic Bed and Breakfast, uno strano B&B a tema spaziale. Scrub non ci può credere, lui avrebbe solo voluto giocare a basket e partecipare alle sfide organizzate con il suo migliore amico (tipo "baciare una ragazza" o "fare una cosa stupidissima"). Ha sempre guardato dall'alto in basso i ragazzini appartenenti allo "Sci-Fi/Fantasy Club" della sua città, e invece ora si trova costretto per due mesi in questo assurdo B&B con una nonna hippie, vegana e fissata con lo spazio... e gli ospiti sono veramente bizzarri!
In una serie di avventure, la nonna lo metterà a parte del segreto del suo B&B ed entrambi faranno amicizia con Amy, una ragazzina dell'età di Scrub che è appassionata di alieni e vuole studiare astrobiologia.
Scrub imparerà così ad apprezzare chi è diverso, comprendendo che in fondo la diversità è qualcosa di relativo e che va accettata e valorizzata, anziché disprezzata e derisa.
È il primo libro di una serie, in realtà la storia ha una sua conclusione anche se rimane comunque aperta a un seguito per chi voglia proseguire. Chiaramente, come dicevo, il pubblico è pre-adolescenziale, ma l'ho trovato comunque un romanzo godibilissimo....more
Come sempre, le fiabe lette da adulti sono molto diverse da come erano quando le leggevamo o ce le leggevano da bambini, così come sono molto diverse Come sempre, le fiabe lette da adulti sono molto diverse da come erano quando le leggevamo o ce le leggevano da bambini, così come sono molto diverse dai cartoni animati o film che ne vengono tratti, primi fra tutti quelli della Disney. Le versioni per bambini sono ovviamente edulcorate, e questo è ancora più evidente nelle fiabe scritte ad esempio dai fratelli Grimm, che sono a tratti truculente nella loro versione originale. Andersen non arriva a tanto, ma comunque si sente che le sue fiabe sono solo parzialmente dedicate ai bambini. La Sirenetta è senz’altro una fiaba adatta ai bambini, anche nella sua versione originale, ma ha comunque significati più profondi che al bambino sfuggono, come ad esempio l’anelito all’immortalità (e quindi un’aura di religiosità), la bellezza delle buone azioni, il dolore di voler essere diversi da quel che si è, l’amore. In conclusione, io sono sempre in favore della rilettura da grandi dei libri letti da bambini, perché si scoprono sempre cose nuove e si può ricordare un piccolo pezzetto della propria infanzia.
