160 mg, BID Indication: Regular treatment of asthma where use of a combination (inhaled corticosteroid and long acting -agonist) is appropriate. Symptomatic treatment of
patients with moderate-severe COPD , with significant symptoms and a history of exacerbations. contraindication: hypersensitivity to budesonide, formoterol or inhaled lactose Mode of Action: antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that exhibits potent glucocorticoid activity and weak mineralocorticoid activity. Drug inhibits mast cells, macrophages and mediators involved in inflammation side effects: headache, coughing, hoarseness adverse effects: palpitations, candida infections in the oropharynx, mild irritation to the throat Drug to drug interaction: ketoconazole, -adrenergic blockers, quinidine, dysopyramide, procainamide, phenothiazines, anti-histamines, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, Ldopa, L-thyroxine, exytocin, alcohol, digitalis glycosides. Nsg. Responsibilities: 1.) Ask patient if she has had any previous allergic reactions to the drug 2.) If bronchospasm occurs after using budesonide, stop the therapy and treat with bronchodilator 3.) Instruct the patient to use the inhaler at regular intervals 4.) Watch out for candida infections of the mouth and pharynx 5.) Encourage patient to comply with treatment regimen 6.) Inform the patient about the possible side effects of the drug 7.) Instruct patient to inform the nurse if side effects will occur 8.) If headache occurs, give pain reliever as ordered 9.) Instruct patient to increase OFI 10.)
