History
In1820,theFrenchengineerA.Duleauderivedanalyticallythatthetorsionconstantofabeamisidentical
tothesecondmomentofareanormaltothesectionJzz,whichhasanexactanalyticequation,byassuming
thataplanesectionbeforetwistingremainsplaneaftertwisting,andadiameterremainsastraightline.
Unfortunately,thatassumptioniscorrectonlyinbeamswithcircularcrosssections,andisincorrectforany
othershapewherewarpingtakesplace.[1]

Fornoncircularcrosssections,therearenoexactanalyticalequationsforfindingthetorsionconstant.
Howeverapproximatesolutionshavebeenfoundformanyshapes.Noncircularcrosssectionalwayshave
warpingdeformationsthatrequirenumericalmethodstoallowtheexactcalculationofthetorsion
constant.[2]

Thetorsionalstiffnessofabeamswithnoncircularcrosssectionsissignificantlyincreasedifthewarping
oftheendsectionsisrestrainedby,forexample,stiffendblocks.[3]
