FOREWORD
This series of lessons on The Sanctuary and Its Symbolism can but
scratch the surface of a topic that is infinite in scope. Even that which has
been revealed will tax the searching mind to the utmost and there is always
more to learn.
The Psalmist says, "Thy way, 0 God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great
a God as our God" (Psalm 77:13). In our study to know and understand the
Lord and what Jesus is doing for us right now, we must enter fully into the
sanctuary where He is, by faith. The precious light has been shining from the
open door of the most holy for many years. As a people we are privileged above
any other denomination with these precious truths. It is for us to realize what
a wealth of spiritual truth is open to us.
While much has been recorded in some of the smallest details in the
Scriptures, further light has been given by the Spirit of Prophecy. It is for us to
gather every precious truth. In a letter Sr. White stated that she could say
much regarding the sanctuary, the ark containing the law of God, the cover of
the ark-which is the mercy seat, the angels at either end of the ark, and other
things connected with the heavenly sanctuary and with the great day of atone-
ment, and the mysteries of heaven, but she said her lips were closed. Oh, that
the people of God would learn to appreciate fully the light they already have!
"We are not now sufficiently advanced in spiritual attainments to com-
prehend the mysteries of God. But when we shall compose the family of
heaven, these mysteries will be unfolded before us.... Then much will be
revealed in explanation of matters upon which God now keeps silence because
we have not gathered up and appreciated that which has been made known of
the eternal mysteries. The ways of Providence will be made clear; the
mysteries of grace through Christ will be unfolded. That which the mind can-
not now grasp, which is hard to be understood, will be explained...." -SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1091.
In the study of the sanctuary many of the problems of life are made clear.
The wealth and apparent prosperity of the worldly wise, and those who ignore
God, is seen in its true perspective. The Psalmist perplexed by the seeming
rewards of evil says, "Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood
I their end" (Psalm 73:17).
It is the prayer of the Sabbath school officers that these lessons will
stimulate the purpose of study more deeply into this important subject and
realize what our Lord is doing to prepare for our redemption.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, April 3, 1976
THE IMPORTANCE
OF
THE SANCTUARY
KEY TEXT: "Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then understood I
their end" (Psalm 73:17).
2. What other purpose was served through the erection of the sanc-
tuary? Exodus 29:43, 44; Exodus 25:22.
5
A Divine Object Lesson o Monday
March 29
3. What did the Lord want to teach Israel through the visible structure?
Exodus 25:9, 40; Hebrews 8:5.
NOTE: " ... Man was made to feel his ignorance and weakness in the
presence of Him who hath 'weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a
balance.' Isaiah 40:12. Here, by the manifestation of His glory, God sought to
impress Israel with the holiness of His character and requirements, and the ex-
ceeding guilt of transgression.
"But the people were slow to learn the lesson. Accustomed as they had
been in Egypt to material representations of the Deity, and these of the most
degrading nature, it was difficult for them to conceive of the existence or the
character of the Unseen One. In pity for their weakness, God gave them a sym-
bol of His presence ...." -Education, p. 35.
NOTE: "The whole system of types and symbols was a compacted prophecy
of the gospel, a presentation in which were bound up the promises of redemp-
tion."-The Acts of the Apostles, p. 14.
NOTE: " ... The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ's work in
behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. It opens to view the
plan of redemption, bringing us down to the very close of time and revealing
the triumphant issue of the contest between righteousness and sin. It is of the
utmost importance that all should throughly investigate these subjects and be
able to give an answer to everyone that asketh them a reason of the hope that
is in them.
"The intercession of Christ in man's behalf in the sanctuary above is as es-
sential to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross. By His death
He began that work which after His resurrection He ascended to complete in
heaven ...." -The Great Controversy, pp. 488, 489.
6
6. Beside being the place for the special manifestation of the presence of
God, what else is implied by the sanctuary of God? 1 Kings 1:50-52;
Ezekiel 11:16.
7
Realization of the Sanctuary Purpose o Thursday
April 1
9. Where is our sanctuary today and how can we benefit from it?
Hebrews 4:14-16.
10. When will God's plan for man be ultimately consummated? Revela-
tion 21:3.
NOTE: " ... Christ became one flesh with us, in order that we might become
one spirit with Him. It is by virtue of this union that we are to come forth from
the grave,-not merely as a manifestation of the power of Christ, but because,
through faith, His life has become ours. Those who see Christ in His true
character, and receive Him into the heart, have everlasting life. It is through
the Spirit that Christ dwells in us; and the Spirit of God, received into the
heart by faith, is the beginning of the life eternal." -The Desire of Ages,
p.388.
c. What purpose was the sanctuary to serve beside being a focal point of
worship?
PERSONAL
Why does God desire to commune with men? What is the sanctuary for
you?

ISRAEL'S CONTRIBUTION
FOR THE BUILDING
OF THE SANCTUARY
KEY TEXT: "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him
give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful
giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7).
2. When and on what occasion was the sanctuary first mentioned in the
Scriptures? What great purpose of God was revealed in this
prophecy? Exodus 15:17, 18; Isaiah 56:4-7.
9
All Planned by God D Monday
April 5
3. a. How did Moses know the exact requirements embracing the whole
construction and services of the sanctuary? Exodus 25:9, 40.
NOTE: "God Himself gave to Moses the plan of that structure, with par-
ticular directions as to its size and form, the materials to be employed, and
every article of furniture which it was to contain." -Patriarchs and
Prophets,p. 343.
b. What appeal was then made to the congregation and with what
results? Exodus 35:5-9; 36:4-7.
NOTE: "Thus in labor and in giving they [all the people] were taught to co-
operate with God and with one another. And they were to co-operate also in
the preparation of the spiritual building-God's temple in the soul." -Educa-
tion, p. 37.
4. What proves that even the poorest are not excused from contributing
to God's cause? Mark 12:41-44; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5.
NOTE: "For the building of the sanctuary great and expensive preparations
were necessary; a large amount of the most precious and costly material was
required; yet the Lord accepted only freewill offerings. 'Of every man that
giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take My offering' was the divine com-
mand repeated by Moses to the congregation. Devotion to God and a spirit of
sacrifice were the first requisites in preparing a dwelling place for the Most
High." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 343.
10
NOTE: "God can communicate with His people today and give them wisdom
to do His will, even as He communicated with His people-of old and gave them
wisdom in building the tabernacle. In the construction of this building He
gave a representation of His power and majesty; and His name is to be
honored in the buildings that are erected for Him today. Faithfulness,
stability, and fitness are to be seen in every part." -Testimonies, vol. 7,
pp. 93, 94.
8. For reasons just learned (in the above question), where did Solomon
send for men of skill and understanding? 2 Chronicles 2:13, 14, 3, 7.
NOTE: "It was to these apostates that Solomon looked for a master workman
to superintend the construction of the temple on Mount Moriah....
"The Phenician king responded by sending Huram, 'a cunning man, en-
dued with understanding, ... the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan,
and his father was a man of Tyre.' This master workman, Huram, was a
descendant, on his mother's side, of Aholiab, to whom, hundreds of years
before, God had given special wisdom for the construction of the tabernacle.
Thus at the head of Solomon's company of workmen there was placed an un-
sanctified man, who demanded large wages because of his unusual skill."
-The SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 2, p. 1027.
11
God-Given Talents D Thursday
April 8
9. What should the Lord's workers possess today? Why do some dis-
qualify themselves? Matthew 25: 15, 20-28, 30.
NOTE: " ... We shall individually be held responsible for doing one jot less
than we have ability to do. The Lord measures with exactness every possibility
for service. The unused capabilities are as much brought into account as are
those that'are improved. For all that we might become through the right use of
our talents God holds us responsible. We shall be judged according to what we
ought ttl have done, but did not accomplish because we did not use our powers
to glorify God. Even if we do not lose our souls, we shall realize in eternity the
result of our unused talents. For all the knowledge and ability that we might
have gained and did not, there will be an eternal loss." -Christ's Object
Lessons, p. 363.
ANSWER: " ... There is no limit to the usefulness of one who, putting self
aside, makes room for the working of the Holy Spirit upon his heart and lives a
life wholly consecrated to God. All who consecrate body, soul, and spirit to His
service will be constantly receiving a new endowment of physical, mental, and
spiritual power...." -The Ministry of Healing, p. 159.
PERSONAL
What is an example of unprofitable giving? Exodus 32. How should we ap-
preciate the gifts of God, big or small? Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 355-
360.

Lesson 3 Sabbath, April 17, 1976
THE COURT
KEY TEXT: "But the court which is without the temple leave out ... "
(Revelation 11 :2).
NOTE: "The sacred tent was enclosed in an open space called the court,
which was surrounded by hangings, or screens, of fine linen, suspended from
pillars of brass. The entrance to this enclosure was at the eastern end."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 347.
2. What material was used for the walls of the court? Exodus 27:10-17;
38:16.
NOTE: "It [the entrance] was closed by curtains of costly material and
beautiful workmanship, though inferior to those of the sanctuary. The
hangings of the court being only about half as high as the walls of the taber-
nacle, the building could be plainly seen by the people without." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 347.
4. What durable metals were used to make the pillars, hooks, and fillets
that were necessary to hold the white linen in place? Exodus 38: 17.
13
The Court as a Type D Tuesday
April 13
5. How much silver, which represents redemption through Christ, was
required from every man? In comparison, how highly did Judas value
his Redeemer? Exodus 30:12-16; Matthew 26:14-16.
NOTE: "For thirty pieces of silver-the price of a slave- he [Judas] sold the
Lord of glory to ignominy and death." -The Desire of Ages, p. 716.
6. How tnany entrances led into the court and what important fact does
this convey to us? Exodus 27:16; John 10:7,9.
NOTE: "As Adam and Eve were banished from Eden for transgressing the
law of God, so Christ was to suffer without the boundaries of the holy place.
He died outside the camp, where felons and murd~rers were executed. There
He trod the winepress alone, bearing the penalty that should have fallen on
the sinner. How deep and full of significance are the words, 'Christ hath
redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.' He went
forth without the camp, thus showing that He gave His life not only for the
Jewish nation, but for the whole world." -The SDA Bible Commentary,
Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 934.
8. When "t"he fulness of time was come," what was necessary before
Christ could enter the court to offer Himself as the sacrifice?
Galatians 4:4, 5; Hebrews 13:11-13.
NOTE: " ... It would have been an almost infinite humiliation for the Son of
God to take man's nature, even when Adam stood in his innocence in Eden.
But Jesus accepted humanity when the race had been weakened by four thou-
sand years of sin. Like every child of Adam He accepted the results of the
working of the great law of heredity. What these results were is shown in the
history of His earthly ancestors. He came with such a heredity to share our
sorrows and temptations, and to give us the example of a sinless life." -The
Desire of Ages, p. 49.
14
The Christians and the Court o Thursday
April 15
NOTE: "Repentance includes sorrow for sin and a turning away from it. We
shall not renounce sin unless we see its sinfulness; until we turn away from it
in heart, there will be no real change in the life." -Steps to Christ, p. 23.
"If you see your sinfulness, do not wait to make yourself better. How
many there are who think they are not good enough to come to come to Christ.
Do you expect to become better through your own efforts? 'Can the Ethiopian
change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are
accustomed to do evil.' Jeremiah 13:23. There is help for us only in God. We
must not wait for stronger persuasions, for better opportunities, or for holier
tempers. We can do nothing of ourselves. We must come to Christ just as we
are." -Ibid., p. 31.

LESSON RECAPIT.ULATION April 16
a. What plan did the Lord make to show the sanctity of the vicinity of
His place of worship?
b. What lessons may be learned from the construction of the court?
c. What is the significance of the use of the court as the official place of
sacrifices?
d. What significance does this have with the work of Christ as our Sub-
stitute?
e. What application of these truths is given by the apostle Paul for our
time?
PERSONAL
Since the ground within the gates of the tabernacle is holy, how should
this affect the behavior of the worshipper? - Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 491.

Lesson 4 Sabbath, April 24, 1976
THE ALTAR,
THE LAVER
AND
THEIR SIGNIFICANCE
KEY TEXT: "If we ~onfess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
1. What was in the outer court? Of what metal were they made and of
what is this significant? Exodus 38:1-8; Deuteronomy 33:25; Revela-
tion 1:15.
2. As the altar was constructed of wood overlaid with brass, of what was
the altar a type? With what must the sinner be covered in order to
stand in the presence of God? 1 Corinthians 1:30, 31; Philippians 3:9.
NOTE: " ... Never, in any way, leave the slightest impression upon human
minds that a taint of, or inclination to, corruption rested upon Christ, or that
He in any way yielded to corruption. He was tempted in all points like as man
is tempted, yet He is called 'that holy thing.' It is a mystery that is left unex-
plained to mortals that Christ could be tempted in all points like as we are,
and yet be without sin...." -The SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White
Comments, vol. 5, pp. 1128, 1129.
"On not one occasion was there a response to his [Satan's] manifold
temptations. Not once did Christ step on Satan's ground, to give him any ad-
vantage. Satan found nothing in Him to encourage his advances (Letter 8,
1895)." -Ibid., p. 1129.
16
The Place of Sacrifice o Monday
April 19
3. As all sacrifices made by fire were offered on this altar, what was it
called and what do the sacrifices represent? Exodus 3'8:1; John 1:29;
Hebrews 9: 14.
NOTE: "In the court, and nearest the entrance, stood the brazen altar of
burnt offering. Upon this altar were consumed all the sacrifices made by fire
unto the Lord, and its horns were sprinkled with the atoning blood."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 347.
"The bleeding victim on the altar of sacrifice testified of a Redeemer to
come." -Ibid., p. 367.
NOTE: "Then my eyes were taken from the glory, and I was pointed to the
remnant on the earth. The angel said to them, 'Will Ye'Shun the seven last
plagues? Will ye go to glory and enjoy all that God has prepared for those who
love Him and are willing to suffer for His sake? If so, ye must die that ye may
live. Get ready, get ready, get ready. Ye must have a greater preparation than
ye now have, for the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce
anger, to lay the land desolate and to destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
Sacrifice all to God. Lay all upon His altar-self, property, and all, a living
sacrifice. It will take all to enter glory... .' " -Early Writings, pp. 66, 67.
6. What description is given of the final scenes of this earth, when the
Lord's purifying fire obliterates the last traces ohin? Malachi 4:1, 3;
Ezekiel 28:18, 19.
NOTE: "The fires of the day of God will consume the stubble and chaff, and
there will be nothing left of any who continue in the ungodly course which they
have so long loved. This class have a disrelish for the society of those whom
God is truly with. Their religious experience is of so low an order that they
have no part nor lot in a rational, intelligent religious experience; therefore
they have despised the society of those whom God leads and is teaching... ."
-Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 554, 555.
" Fire comes down from God out of heaven.... The very rocks are on
fire The earth's surface seems one molten mass-a vast, seething lake of
17
fire. It is the time of the judgment and perdition of ungodly men ....
" ... In the cleansing flames the wicked are at last destroyed, root and
branch-Satan the root, his followers the branches. The full penalty of the l/iw
has been visited; the demands of justice have been met; and heaven and earth,
beholding, declare the righteousness of Jehovah." -The Great Controversy,
pp. 672, 673.
NOTE: " ... Between the altar and the door of the tabernacle was the laver,
which was also of brass, made from the mirrors that had been the freewill
offering of the women of Israel. At the laver the priests were to wash their
hands and their feet whenever they went into the sacred apartments, or ap-
proached the altar to offer a burnt offering unto the Lord." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, pp. 347, 348.
8. What gretlt lesson did the laver hold for the people? What did the
water symbolize? Psalm 26:6; Isaiah 52:11; John 3:5; 13:10.
NOTE: "Christ has made baptism the sign of entrance to His spiritual
kingdom. He has made this a positive condition with which all must comply
who wish to be acknowledged as under the authority of tne Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. Before man can find a home in the church, before passing
the threshold of God's spiritual kingdom, he is to receive the impress of the
divine name, 'The Lord our Righteousness.' Jeremiah 23:6.
"Baptism is a most'solemn renunciation of the world. Those who are bap-
tized in the threefold name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, at the
18
very entrance of their Christian life declare publicly that they have forsaken
the service of Satan and have become members of the royal family, children of
the heavenly King...." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 91.
NOTE: "Brethren, with the beloved John I caB upon you to 'behold, what
manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be caBed the
sons of God.' What love, what matchless love, that, sinners and aliens as we
are, we may be brought back to God and adopted into His family! We may ad-
dress Him by the endearing name, 'Our Father,' which is a sign of our affec-
tion for Him and a pledge of His tender regard and relationship to us. And the
Son of God, beholding the heirs of grace, 'is not ashamed to caB them
brethren.' They have even a more sacred relationship to God than have the
angels who have never faBen." -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 739, 740.

d. For what purpose did the Lord require the laver to be before the sanc-
tuary?
e. What deep significance underlies both baptism and the service of foot

PERSONAL
What significance may be seen in that the laver was made from the
polished brass of the mirrors of the women? 1 Peter 3:1-5.

Lesson 5 Sabbath, May 1,1976
THE
HOLY PLACE
AND
ITS
SYMBOLISM
KEY TEXT: "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were
dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with
hands, eternal in the heavens" (2 Corinthians 5:1).
NOTE: "The subject of the sanctuary will give us correct views of the impor-
tance of the work for this time." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 421
2. For what reasons was the earthly sanctuary divided into com-
partments? Exodus 26:33; Hebrews 9:6, 7.
20
The Earthly Structure o Monday
April 26
NOTE: "To the humble, believing soul, the house of God on earth is the gate
of heaven. The song of praise, the prayer, the words spoken by Christ's
representatives, are God's appointed agencies to prepare a people for the
church above, for that loftier worship into which there can enter nothing that
defileth.
"From the sacredness which was attached to the earthly sanctuary,
Christians may learn how they should regard the place where the Lord meets
with His people." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 491.
"God is greatly to be reverenced; all who truly realize His presence will
bow in humility before Him, and, like Jacob beholding the vision of God, they
will cry out, 'How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of
God, and this is the gate of heaven.' " -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 252.
NOTE: " ... The walls consisted of upright boards, set in silver sockets, and
held firm by pillars and connecting bars; and all were overlaid with gold, giv-
ing to the building the appearance of solid gold. The roof was formed of four
sets of curtains, the innermost of 'fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and
scarlet: with cherubim of cunning work;' the other three respectively were of
goats' hair, rams' skins dyed red, and sealskins, so arranged as to afford com-
plete protection."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p.347.
5. Since the outer coverings of the building were made to overhang on all
sides, what appearance did it have from the outside? In contrast
describe the inner beauty. Exodus 26:12-14.
NOTE: "No language can describe the glory of the scene presented within the
sanctuary-the gold-plated walls reflecting the light from the golden
candlestick, the brilliant hues of the richly embroidered curtains with their
shining angels, the table, and the altar of incense, glittering with gold ... "
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 349.
21
6. Referring to question 5, how did this typify our Saviour while here on
earth? Isaiah 53:1-4; John 1:14; Hebrews 10:20,4.
NOTE: "The King of glory stooped low to take humanity. Rude and forbid-
ding were His earthly surroundings. His glory was veiled, that the majesty of
His outward form might not become an object of attraction. He shunned all
outward display. Riches, worldly honor, and human greatness can never save
a soul from death; Jesus purposed that no attraction of an earthly nature
should call men to His side. Only the beauty of heavenly truth must draw
those who would follow Him. The character of the Messiah had long been
foretold in prophecy, and He desired men to accept Him upon the testimony of
the word of God." -The Desire of Aees, p.43.
7. What should characterize the lives of the true children of God? What
is the sad condition of many who profess to believe in the third and
fourth angel's messages? Revelation 3:17, 18.
8. What is the significance of the material and beauty of the two veils
and the' iJiner covering forming the ceiling? Further, what is
represented by the inwrought cherubims? Exodus 27:16; 26:36,31.
NOTE: "The building was divided into two apartments by a rich and
beatltiful curtain, or veil, suspended from gold-plated pillars; and a similar
veil closed the entrance of the first apartment. These, like the inner covering,
which formed the ceiling, were of the most gorgeous colors, blue, purple, and
scarlet, beautifully arranged, while inwrought with threads of gold and silver
were cherubim to represent the angelic host who are connected with the work
of the heavenly sanctuary and who are ministering spirits to the people of God
on earth." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 347.
22
The Sanctuary as a Protection o Thursday
April 29
10. What protection and defense against enemies and the elements of
nature made the sanctuary services possible? Isaiah 4:2, 4-6.
NOTE: " ... By day the cloud directed their journeyings' or spread as a
canopy above the host. It served as a protection from the burning heat, and by
its coolness and moisture afforded grateful refreshment in the parched, thirsty
desert. By night it became a pillar of fire, illuminating their encampment and
constantly assuring them of the divine presence." -Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.282.
PERSONAL
How does the richness and beauty of the sanctuary convey lessons that we
may apply to our own lives?
23
Lesson 6 Sabbath, May 8,1976
THREE AGENCIES
IN
SANCTIFICATION
KEY TEXT: "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray
90d your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved
blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ"
(1 Thessalonians 5:23).
NOTE: "Th~ showbread was kept ever before the Lord as a perpetual offer-
ing. Thus it was a part of the daily sacrifice. It was called showbread, or 'bread
of presence,' because it was ever before the face of the Lord. It was an
acknowledgment of man's dependence upon God for both temporal and
spiritual food, and that it is received only through the mediation of
Christ...." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 354.
24
NOTE: "Christ's sayings are pure gold." -Fundamentals of Christian
Education, p. 386.
"The gold tried in the fire is faith that works by love. Only this can bring
us into harmony with God. We may be active, we may do much work; but
without love, such love as dwelt in the heart of Christ, we can never be
numbered with the family of heaven." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 158.
3. What is the symbolism of the bread that was always present on the
table and replenished every Sabbath and then eaten by the priests?
What and whom does this represent for us? John 6:51,63; Matthews
4:4.
NOTE: "God had fed Israel in the wilderness with bread from heaven, and
they were still dependent upon His bounty, both for temporal food and
spiritual blessings. Both the manna and the showbread pointed to Christ, the
living Bread, who is ever in the presence of God for us." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 354.
4. How does the soul, converted and justified through his experience in
the court, look unto Christ and the word? Job 23:10-12.
NOTE: "We are to receive God's word as supreme authority. We must accept
its truths for ourselves. And we can appreciate these truths only as we search
them out by personal study. Then, as we make God's word the guide of our
lives, for us is answered the prayer of Christ: 'Sanctify them through Thy
truth: Thy word is truth.' " -Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 402, 403.
NOTE: " ... Upon this altar the priest was to burn incense every morning
and evening; its horns were touched with the blood of the sin offering, and it
was sprinkled with blood upon the great Day of Atonement. The fire upon this
25
altar was kindled by God Himself and was sacredly cherished. Day and night
the holy incense diffused its fragrance throughout the sacred apartments, and
without, far around the tabernacle." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.
NOTE: " ... On the south [of the first apartment] was the seven-branched
candlestick, with its seven lamps. Its branches were ornamented with ex-
quisitely wrought flowers, resembling lilies, and the whole was made from one
solid piece of gold. There being no windows in the tabernacle, the lamps were
never all extinguished at one time, but shed their light by day and by
night...." ~Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.
8. How does the apostle John use the reference to the light to explain the
work of Christ? How was this explanation amplified by Jesus? John
1:4,9; 3:19-21.
NOTE: "As the radiant lamps of the temple lighted up all about them, so
Christ, the source of spiritual light, illumines the darkness of the world. Yet
the symbol was imperfect. That great light which His own hand had set in the
heavens was a truer representation of the glory of His mission." -The Desire
of Ages, p. 463.

9. For what purpose did the Lord position the sanctuary so that the
worshipers and the priest had their )backs to the east? Exodus
38: 13, 14; 40:22, 24, 26; Ezekiel 8: 15, 16.
10. What important trust did Christ give His followers? How were they to
fulfil this trust? Matthew 5:14; Revelation 1:12, 13,20.
NOTE: " ... It was by receiving of His life that His disciples could become
light bearers. The life of Christ in the soul, His love revealed in the character,
would make them the light of the world.
"Humanity has in itself no light. Apart from Christ we are like an un-
kindled taper, like the moon when her face is turned away from the sun; we
have not a single ray of brightness to shed into the darkness of the world. But
when we turn toward the Sun of Righteousness, when we come in touch with
Christ, the whole soul is aglow with the brightness of the divine presence.
" ... Angels of glory wait to communicate through you heaven's light and
power to souls that are ready to perish. Shall the human agent fail of ac-
complishing his appointed work? Oh, then to that degree is the world robbed
of the promised influence of the Holy Spirit!" -Thoughts From the Mount of
Blessing, pp. 39, 40.
"Trials patiently borne, blessings gratefully received, temptations man-
fully resisted, meekness, kindness, mercy, and love habitually revealed, are
the lights that shine forth in the character in contrast with the darkness of the
selfish heart, into which the light of life has never shone." -Ibid., p. 44.

Lesson 7 Sabbath, May 15, 1976
KEY TEXT: "The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between
the Cherubims; let the earth be moved" (Psalm 99:1).
NOTE: "Beyond the inner veil was the holy of holies, where centered the
symbolic service of atonement and intercession, and which formed the connec-
ting link between heaven and earth. In this apartment was the ark, a chest of
acacia wood, overlaid within and without with gold, and having a crown of
gold about the top. It was made as a depositary for the tables of stone, upon
which God Himself had inscribed the Ten Commandments. Hence it was
called the ark orvod's testament, or the ark of the covenant, since the Ten
Commandments were the basis of the covenant made between God and
Israel." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.
2. What did John see when he was given a view of the sanctuary in
heaven and how did he describe it? With the teachings of Jesus in
mind, what was kept in the ark? Revelation 11:19; 15:5; Luke 16:17;
Exodus 40:20.
NOTE: "The ark in the tabernacle on earth contained the two tables of stone,
upon which were inscribed the precepts of the law of God. The ark was merely
a receptacle for the tables of the law, and the presence of these divine precepts
gave to it its value and sacredness. When the temple of God was opened in
heaven, the ark of His testament was seen. Within the holy of holies, in the
sanctuary in heaven, the divine law is sacredly enshrined-the law that was
spoken by G'od Himself amid the thunders of Sinai and written with His own
finger on the tables of stone." -The Great Controversy, pp. 433, 434.
NOTE: " ... The giver of the manna was standing among them. It was Christ
Himself who had led the Hebrews through the wilderness, and had daily fed
28
them with the bread from heaven. That food was a type of the real bread from
heaven. The life-giving Spirit, flowing from the infinite fullness of God, is the
true manna. Jesus said, 'The bread of God is that which cometh down out of
heaven, and giveth life unto the world.' John 6:33, R.V." -The Desire of Ages,
p.386.
4. After Israel had returned to a flesh diet and demanded a king to lead
them, what is specifically recorded concerning the ark when it was
placed in the temple built by Solomon? What is promised to those who
are overcomers at last? 1 Kings 8:9; Revelation 2:17.
NOTE: "The manna, falling from heaven for the sustenance of Israel, was a
type of Him who came from God to give life to the world. Said Jesus, 'I am the
Bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This
is the bread which cometh down from heaven.... If any man eat of this
bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I
will give for the life of the world.' John 6:48-51. .. ." -Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 297.
ANSWER: "But further evidence was given that the priesthood had been es-
tablished in the family of Aaron. By divine direction each tribe prepared a rod
and wrote upon it the name of the tribe. The name of Aaron was upon that of
Levi. The rods were laid up in the tabernacle, 'before the testimony.' The
blossoming of any rod was to be a token that the Lord had chosen that tribe for
the priesthood. On the morrow, 'behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi
was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded
almonds.' It was shown to the people, and afterward laid up in the tabernacle
as a witness to succeeding generations. This miracle effectually settled the
question of the priesthood." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 403.
6. Although there was no ark to be in the restored temple built after the
return from the captivity in Babylon, how was that temple filled with
a greater glory? Ezra 6: 14; Haggai 2:7, 9; Matthew 21 :12-15.
NOTE: "Among the righteous still in Jerusalem, to whom had been made
plain the divine purpose, were some who determined to place beyond the
reach of ruthless hands the sacred ark containing the tables of stone on which
had been traced the precepts of the Decalogue. This they did. With mourning
and sadness they secreted the ark in a cave, where it was to be hidden from the
people of Israel and Judah because of their sins, and was to be no more
restored to them. That sacred ark is yet hidden. It has never been disturbed
since it was secreted." -Prophets and Kings, p. 453.
29
"The Shekinah no longer abode between the cherubim in the most holy
place; the ark, the mercy seat, and the tables of testimony were not found
there. No sign from heaven made known to the inquiring priest the will of
Jehovah." -Ibid., p.597.
"In being honored with the personal presence of Christ during His earthly
ministry, and in this alone, did the second temple exceed the first in glory."
-Ibid.
NOTE: "The cover of the sacred chest was called the mercy seat. This was
wrought of one solid piece of gold, and was surmounted by golden cherubim,
one standing on each end. One wing of each angel was stretched forth on high,
while the other was folded over the body (see Ezekiel 1:11) in token of
reverence and humility. The position of the cherubim, with their faces turned
toward each other, and looking reverently downward toward the ark,
represented the r~verence with which the heavenly host regard the law of God
and their interest' in the plan of redemption.
"Above the mercy seat was the Shekinah, the manifestation of the divine
Presence; and from between the cherubim, God made known His will. Divine
messages were sometimes communicated to the high priest by a voice from the
cloud. Sometimes a light fell upon the angel at the right, to signify approval or
acceptance, or a shadow or cloud rested upon the one at the left to reveal dis-
approval or rejection." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 348, 349.
8. Why was the ark covered by the mercy seat? What is illustrated by
this? Psalm 85: 10; Romans 3:23; Colossians 1:21.
NOTE: " ... The cover of this ark ... was called the mercy-seat, to signify
that although death was the penalty for transgressing the law, mercy came
through Jesus Christ to pardon the repentant, believing sinner." -Sons and
Daughters of God, p. 66.
"God's love for the fallen race is a peculiar manifestation of love-a love
born of mercy, for human beings are all undeserving. Mercy implies imperfec-
tion of the object toward which it is shown. It is because of sin that mercy was
brought into active exercise." -Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 264.
30
NOTE: "Important truths concerning the atonement are taught by the
typical service. A substitute was accepted in the sinner's stead; but the sin
was not canceled by the blood of the victim. A means was thus provided by
which it was transferred to the sanctuary." -The Great Controversy, p. 420.
10. What serious admonition is given for us today to consider the lessons
to be learned from the most holy place? Hebrews 2:1, 3.
NOTE: "The significance of the Jewish economy is not yet fully com-
prehended. Truths vast and profound are shadowed forth in its rites and sym-
bols. The gospel is the key that unlocks its mysteries. Through a knowledge of
the plan of redemption, its truths are opened to the understanding. Far more
than we do, it is our privilege to understand these wonderful themes. We are to
comprehend the deep things of God...." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 133.
" ... As the life of Christ and the character of His mission are dwelt upon,
rays of light will shine forth more distinctly at every attempt to discover truth.
Each fresh search will reveal something more deeply interesting than has yet
been unfolded. The subject is inexhaustible. The study of the incarnation of
Christ, His atoning sacrifice and mediatorial work, will employ the mind of
the diligent student as long as time shall last; and looking to heaven with its
unnumbered years he will exclaim, 'Great is the mystery of godliness.' -Ibid.,
p.134.
"The children of God are to manifest His glory. In their own life and
character they are to reveal what the grace of God has done for them.
"The light of the Sun of Righteousness is to shine forth in good works-in
words of truth and deeds of holiness." -Ibid., pp. 415, 416.

What relation may be seen in the decline of spirituality and the neglect to

THE PRIEST
AND
HIS GARMENTS
KEY TEXT: "Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We
have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the
throne of the Majesty in the heavens" (Hebrews 8:1).
NOTE: [After the idolatry of the golden calf] " ... Standing in the gate of the
camp, Moses called to the people, 'Who is on the Lord's side? let him come
unto me.' Those who had not joined in the apostasy were to take their position
at the right of Moses; those who were guilty but repentant, at the left. The
command was obeyed. It was found that the tribe of Levi had taken no part in
the idolatrous worship...." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 324.
"God does not annul His law. He does not work contrary to them. The
work of sin He does not undo. But He transforms. Through His grace the curse
works out blessing." -Education, p. 148.
"But repentance wrought reformation; and by their faithfulness to God
amidst the apostasy ofthe other tribes, the curse was transformed into a token
of highest honor." Ibid.
32
2. If we overcame the world, to which exalted office have we been chosen
through the victories of our Redeemer? 1 Peter 2:9,10.
NOTE: "When men and women have formed characters which God can en-
dorse, when their self-denial and self-sacrifice have been fully made, when
they are ready for the final test, ready to be introduced into God's family,
what service will stand highest in the estimation of Him who gave Himself a
willing offering to save a guilty race? What enterprise will be most dear to the
heart of infinite love? What work will bring the greatest satisfaction and joy to
the Father and the Son?-The salvation of perishing souls...." -Selected
Messages, book 1, pp. 90, 91.
3. What special garments were prepared for the priestly office? In con-
trast with the simple seamless garment of Christ, how were they
prepared and why? Exodus 28:40; 39:27-29; John 19:23, 24.
NOTE: "In accordance with their office, a special dress was appointed for the
priests. 'Thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, for glory and
for beauty,' was the divine direction to Moses. The robe of the common priest
was of white linen, and woven in one piece....
"The garments of the high priest were of costly material and beautiful
workmanship, befitting his exalted station. In addition to the linen dress of
the common priest, he wore a robe of blue, also woven in one piece."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 350, 351.
4. Describe the various garments worn by the high priest and give their
significance. What attire was worn on the day of atonement? Exodus
28:2, 4-8, 31-36; Leviticus 16:4, 23-26.
NOTE: "Everything worn by the priest was to be whole' and without blemish.
By those beautiful official garments was represented the character of the great
antitype, Jesus Christ. Nothing but perfection, in dress and attitude, in word
and spirit, could be acceptable to God. He is holy, and His glory and perfec-
tion must be represented by the earthly service. Nothing but perfection could
properly represent the sacredness of the heavenly service. Finite man might
rend his own heart by showing a contrite and humble spirit. This God would
discern. But no rent must be made in the priestly robes, for this would mar the
representation of heavenly things. The high priest who dared to appear in holy
office, and engage in the service of the sanctuary, with a rent robe, was looked
upon as having severed himself from God. By rending his garment he cut
himself off from being a representative character. He was no longer accepted
by God as an officiating priest...." -The Desire of Ages, p. 709.
"There should be no carelessness in dress. For Christ's sake, whose
witnesses we are, we should seek to make the best of our appearance. In the
tabernacle service, God specified every detail concerning the garments of
those who ministered before Him. Thus we are taught that He has a
preference in regard to ~he dress of those who serve Him. Very specific were
the directions given in regard to Aaron's robes, for his dress was symbolic. So
the dress of Christ's followers should be symbolic. In all things we are to be
representatives of Him. Our appearance in every respect should be
characteriz~d by neatness, modesty, and purity. But the word of God gives no
sanction to the making of changes in apparel merely for the sake of fashion,
that we may appear like the world. Christians are not to decorate the person
with costly array or expensive ornaments." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 96.
5. Of what should the priestly garments made of white, fine linen, con-
tinually remind the church and her members? Revelation 19:8.
NOTE: "To the church it is given 'that she should be arrayed in fine linen,
clean and white,' 'not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.' Rev. 19:8."
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 310. .
"Only the covering which Christ Himself has provided can make us meet
to appear in God's presence." -Ibid., p. 311.
"This robe, woven in the loom of heaven, has in it not one thread of
human devising. Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and
this character He offers to impart to us.... By His perfect obedience He has
made it possible for every human being to obey God's commandments. When
we submit ourselves to Christ, the heart is united with His heart, the will is
merged in His will, the mind becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are
brought into captivity to Him; we live His life. This is what it means to be
clothed with the garment of His rightousness ... ." -Ibid., pp. 311, 312.

May 19
7. In the time when Satan is working with all deceivableness of un-
righteousness and there is a general lack of love for the truth (see
2 Thess. 2:9, 10), what is the particular significance of the girdle?
Luke 12:35; Isaiah 11:5.
NOTE: "God will prove him [Bro. D) and try him, and he must be girded
about with truth and have on the armor of righteousness, or he will fall by the
hand of the enemy." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 588.
8. While our heavenly high Priest bears the names of the new covenant
[Israel] next to his heart-in his breastplate-with what shall we
protect our hearts? Ephesians 6: 14; 1 Thessalonians 5:8.
NOTE: "Like Aaron, who symbolized Christ, our Saviour bears the names of
all His people on His heart in the holy place. Our great High Priest remembers
all the words by which He has encouraged us to trust. He is ever mindful of His
covenant." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 148.
"We must put on every piece of the armor, and then stand firm. The Lord
has honored us by choosing us as His soldiers. Let us fight bravely for Him,
maintaining the right in every transaction. Rectitude in all things is essential
to the welfare of the soul. As you strive for the victory over your own in-
clinations, He will help you by His Holy Spirit to be circumspect in every ac-
tion, that you may give no occasion for the enemy to speak evil of the truth.
Put on as your breastplate that divinely protected righteousness which it is
the privilege of all to wear. This will protect your spiritual life." -The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 6, p. 1119.
NOTE: " ... The high priest always entered it [the most holy] with trembl-
ing, while the people waited his return with solemn silence. Their earnest
35
desires were to God for his blessing. Before the mercy-seat God conversed with
the high priest. If he remained an unusual time in the most holy, the people
were often terrified, fearing that because of their sins, or some sin of the priest,
the glory of the Lord had slain him. But when the sound of the tinkling of the
bells upon his garments was heard, they were greatly relieved. He then came
forth and blessed the people." -Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4, p. 10.
10. What does the holy crown denote for the present and future time? Ex-
odus 39:28, 30, 31; Leviticus 8:9.
NOTE: "The miter of the high priest consisted of the white linen turban,
having attached to it by a lace of blue, a gold plate bearing the inscription,
'Holiness to Jehovah.' Everything connected with the apparel and deportment
of the priests was to be such as to impress the beholder with a sense of the
holiness of God, the sacredness of His worship, and the purity required of
those who came into His presence." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 35l.
"Upon the heads of the overcomers, Jesus with His own right hand places
the crown of glory. For each there is a crown, bearing his own 'new name'
(Revelation 2:L7), and the inscription, 'Holiness to the Lord.' " -The Great
Controversy, p:646.

Lesson 9 Sabbath, May 29,1976
KEY TEXT:.,"Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I
'have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and under-
stand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither
shall there be after me" (Isaiah 43:10),
NOTE: " ... Directions had just been given for the immediate erection of the
tabernacle for the service of God; and now the people might conclude, because
the object had in view was the glory of God, and also because of their great
need of a. place of worship, that they would be justified in working at the
building upon the Sabbath. To guard them from this error, the warning was
given. Even the sacredness and urgency of that special work for God must not
lead them to infringe upon His holy rest day." -Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.314.
2. Mter the tabernacle was completed, to whom was it brought for in-
spection, and what was his finding? Exodus 39:32, 33, 43.
NOTE: "A period of about half a year was occupied in the building of the
tabernacle. When it was completed, Moses examined all the work of the
builders, comparing it with the pattern shown him in the mount and the direc-
tions he had received from God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.349.
37
The Tabernacle and Its Priests D Monday
May 24
3. When was the tabernacle erected and in what order? Exodus
40: 1, 2, 16-25, 5-8.
NOTE: "With eager interest the multitudes of Israel crowded around to look
upon the sacred structure. While they were contemplating the scene with
reverent satisfaction, the pillar of cloud floated over the sanctuary and,
descending, enveloped it. 'And the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.'
There was a revealing of the divine majesty, and for a time even Moses could
not enter. With deep emotion the people beheld the token that the work of
their hands was accepted. There were no loud demonstrations of rejoicing. A
solemn awe rested upon all. But the gladness of their hearts welled up in tears
of joy, and they murmured low, earnest words of gratitude that God had con-
descended to abide with them." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 349, 350.
4. What did the Lord direct Moses to do when it was the time to con-
secrate Aaron and his sons to the priesthood? How many days did this
solemn occasion last? Leviticus 8:1-3, 33-36.
NOTE: "By divine direction the tribe of Levi was set apart for the service of
the sanctuary. In the earliest times every man was the priest of his own
household. In the days of Abraham the priesthood was regarded as the
birthright of the eldest son. Now, instead of the first-born of all Israel, the
Lord accepted the tribe of Levi for the work of the sanctuary. By this signal
honor He manifested His approval of their fidelity, both in adhering to His
service and in executing His judgments when Israel apostatized in the worship
of the golden calf. ... " -Patriarchs and Prophets, p.350.
6. What identified Aaron and his sons from the people and designated
their office? What impressive lesson can be learned from the fact that
the washing and the dressing had to be done by Moses? Leviticus 8:6-
9, 13; John 15:5 (last part); Isaiah 61:10; Psalm 132:9.
NOTE: "Notwithstanding the defects of the people of God, Christ does not
turn away from the objects of His care. He has the power to change their rai-
ment. He removes the filthy garments, He places upon the repenting, believ-
ing ones His own robe of righteousness, and writes pardon against their names
on the recurds of heaven. He confesses them as His before the heavenly uni-
verse. Satan their adversary is shown to be an accuser and deceiver. God will
do justice for His own elect." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 169, 170.

The Annointing o Wednesday
May 26
7. As well as the priestly garments, which were a sign to men of his of-
ficial position, what service was next performed, symbolic of divine
acceptance? Exodus 29:7; Leviticus 8:10-12.
NOTE: "The golden oil represents the grace with which God keeps the lamps
of believers supplied. Were it not that this holy oil is poured from heaven in
the messages of God's Spirit, the agencies of evil would have entire control
over men. God is dishonored when we do not receive the communications that
He sends us." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 4,
p. 1179.
8. How amply was the oil utilized during the annointing and why?
Psalm 133:2; John 3:34; Acts 10:38.
NOTE: "The time has come when we must expect the Lord to do great things
for us. Our efforts must not flag or weaken. We are to grow in grace and in the
knowledge of the Lord. Before the work is closed up and the sealing of God's
people is finished, we shall receive the outpouring of the Spirit of God. Angels
from heaven will be in our midst. The present is a fitting-up time for heaven
when we must walk in full obedience to all the commands of God." -Selected
Messages, book 1, p. 111.
9. What was the concluding ceremonial using the blood of the ram and
what does this denote? Leviticus 8:22-28.
ANSWER: The application of the blood has lessons for all today:
a) on right ear - to diligently hearken and obey God's command (1 Samuel
15:22).
b) on the thumb - to be righteous in every act and do His will (Hebrews 10:7).
c) on great toe - to walk in the light and be willing to be sent (John 4:34).
d) unleavened bread - sincerity and truth (l Corinthians 5:7).
e) by this whole act (Leviticus 8:27) the priests were to typify the one of whom
is said "the government shall be upon His shoulder" (Isaiah 9:6).
"Again my mind is exercised much in regard to our behavior and forma-
tion of character in this life. Professedly we have taken our stand on the Lord's
side, to represent in this evil generation the close relationship that Christians
enjoy with God, and with Jesus Christ whom He hath sent. It is certainly our
privilege to enlarge our experience, to deepen our consecration, and to come
into closer contact with our heavenly Father, bringing our will and way into
39
conformity with His will and way." -Medical Ministry, p. 255.
"The blood of Christ is efficacious, but it needs to be applied continually.
God not only wants His servants to use the means He has entrusted to them
for His glory, but He desires them to make a consecration of themselves to His
cause. If you, my brethren, have become selfish and are withholding from the
Lord that which you should cheerfully give to His service, then you need the
blood of sprinkling thoroughly applied, consecrating you and all your
possessions to God." -Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 122.
10. What was the great sign of approval after the dedication of the taber-
nacle and the priests "as the Lord commanded"? Which promise had
been fulfilled? Leviticus 9:22-24, 6.
NOTE: "After the dedication of the tabernacle, the priests were consecrated
to their sacred office. These services occupied seven days, each marked by
special ceremonies. On the eighth day they entered upon their ministration.
Assisted by his sons, Aaron offered the sacrifices that God required, and he
lifted up his hands and blessed the people. All had been done as God com-
manded, and He accepted the sacrifice, and revealed His glory in a
remarkable manner; fire came from the Lord and consumed the offering upon
the altar. The people looked upon this wonderful manifestation of divine
power with awe and intense interest. They saw in it a token of God's glory and
favor, and they raised a universal shout of praise' and adoration and fell on
their faces as if in the immediate presence of Jehovah." -Patriarchs and
Pr.ophets, p. 359.

bath?

Lesson 10 Sabbath, June 5, 1976
KEY TEXT: "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith,
Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the
world" (John 1:29).
Sacrifices o Sunday
May 30
ANSWER:
b. Sin offerings (non-sweet savor sin and trespass offerings, Leviticus 4:2,
3; 5:5, 6; 6:2-6).
2. What significance is there in the fact that in most sin offerings, after
sprinkling the blood, the body of the animal was burnt without the
camp? How did Christ, when He had left His heavenly home, bear our
guilt? Leviticus 4: 12; Luke 22:39, 44; 1 Peter 2:24.
NOTE: " ... All His life Christ had been publishing to a fallen world the
good news of the Father's mercy and pardoning love. Salvation for the chief of
sinners was His theme. But now with the terrible weight of guilt He bears, He
cannot see the Father's reconciling face. The withdrawal of the divine
countenance from the Saviour in this hour of supreme anguish pierced His
heart with a sorrow that can never be fully understood by man. So great was
this agony that His physical pain was hardly felt.
" ... He feared that sin was so offensive to God that Their separation was
to be eternal. Christ felt the anguish which the sinner will feel when mercy
shall no longer plead for the guilty race. It was the sense of sin, bringing the
Father's wrath upon Him as man's substitute, that made the cup He drank so
bitter, and broke the heart of the Son of God.
"With amazement angels witnessed the Saviour's despairing agony. The
hosts of heaven veiled their faces from the fearful sight." - The Desire of Ages,
p.753.

Remission of Sin 0 Monday
May 31
3. What was required of all animals brought for sacrifice? What
procedure followed? Exodus 12:5; Leviticus 4:27-31.
NOTE: "The most important part of the daily ministration was the service
performed in behalf of individuals. The repentant sinner brought his offering
to the door of the t~bernacle, and, placing his hand upon the victim's head,
confessed his sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself to the inno-
cent sacrifice."By his own hand the animal was then slain, and the blood was
carried by the priest into the holy place and sprinkled before the veil, behind
which was the ark containing the law that the sinner had transgressed. By this
ceremony the sin was, through the blood, transferred in figure to the sanc-
tuary. In some cases the blood was not taken into the holy place; but the flesh
was then to be eaten by the priest, as Moses directed the sons of Aaron, saying,
"God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation." Leviticus
10:17. Both ceremonies alike symbolized the transfer of the sin from the peni-
tent to the sanctuary." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 354, 355.
"Such was the work that went on, day by day, throughout the year."
- The Great Controversy, p. 418.
4. How is sin f6rgiven in the antitype? How did the sinner escape the
death penalty in Old Testament times? How can sinner in modern
times avoid eternal death? Ezekiel 18:4; Hebrews 9: 19-23; 4: 15, 16.
NOTE: "The verdict is that 'the soul that sinneth it shall die.' But on the
cross the sinner sees the only-begotten of the Father, dying in his stead, and
giving the transgressor life." -Fundamentals of Christian Education,
pp. 197, 198.
"The cloud of vengeance that threatened only misery and despair, in the
light reflected from the cross reveals the writing of God: Live, sinner, live! ye
penitent, believing souls, live! I have paid a ransom." -The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 333.
"Those who, through an intelligent understanding of the Scriptures, view
the cross aright, those who truly believe in Jesus, have a sure foundation for
their faith. They have that faith which works by love and purifies the soul
from all its hereditary and cultivated imperfections." -Testimonies, vol. 6,
p.238.
42
NOTE: "If we have in any manner defrauded or injured our brother, we
should make restitution. If we have unwittingly borne false witness, if we have
misstated his words, if we have injured his influence in any way, we should go
to the ones with whom we have conversed about him, and take back all our in-
jurious misstatements." -Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 59.
NOTE: "We.:·have access to God through the merits of the name of Christ,
and God invites us to bring to Him our trials and temptations; for He un-
derstands them all. He would not have us pour out our woes to human ears.
Through the blood of Christ we may come to the throne of grace, and find
grace to help in time of need." -The SDA Bible Commentary, E. G. White
Comments, va!. 6, p. 1116.
NOTE: "The motive that prompts us to work for God should have in it
nothing akin to self-serving. Unselfish devotion and a spirit of sacrifice have
always been and always will be the first requisite of acceptable service."
-Prophets and Kings, p. 65.
8. What lessons learned from the burnt offerings in the Old Testament
apply to the living sacrifice expected in the New Testament? Romans
12:1.
NOTE: " ... We are to give ourselves to the service of God, and we should
seek to make the offering as nearly perfect as possible. God will not be pleased
with anything.less than the best we can offer. Those who love Him with all the
heart, will desire to give Him the best service of the life, and they will be con-
stantly seeking to bring every power of their being into harmony with the laws
that will promote their ability to do His wil!." -Patriarchs and Prophets,
pp. 352, 353.
43
NOTE: " ... The hours appointed for the morning and the evening sacrifice
were regarded as sacred, and they came to be observed as the set time for
worship throughout the Jewish nation. And when in later times the Jews were
scattered as captives in distant lands, they still at the appointed hour turned
their faces toward Jerusalem and offered up their petitions to the God of
Israel. In this custom Christians have an example for morning and evening
prayer. While God condemns a mere round of ceremonies, without the spirit of
worship, He looks with great pleasure upon those who love Him, bowing mor-
ning and evening to seek pardon for sins committed and to present their re-
quests for needed blessings." -Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 353, 354.
10. What shall we do today in order to place our children and ourselves
under divine guidance in these perilous times? Leviticus 6:~, 12, 13.
NOTE: "Fathers, mothers, you need to seek God morning and evening at the
family altar, that you may learn how to teach your children wisely, tenderly,
lovingly.
"If ever there was a time when every house should be a house of prayer, it
is now. Infidelity and skepticism prevail. Iniquity abounds. Corruption flows
in the vital currents of the soul, and rebellion against God breaks out in the
life. Enslaved by sin, the moral powers are under the tyranny of Satan. The
soul is made the sport of his temptations; and unless some mighty arm is
stretched out to rescue him, man goes where the archrebel leads the way."
-Child Guidance, p.517.
"I know of nothing that causes me so great sadness as a prayerless home. I
do not feel safe in such a house for a single night; and were it not for the hope
of helping the parents to realize their necessIty and their sad neglect, I would
not remain. The children show the result of this neglect, for the fear of God is
not before them." -Ibid., p.518.

Lesson 11 Sabbath, June 12, 1976
THE TYPICAL
DAY OF ATONEMENT
KEY TEXT: "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso con-
fesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13).
NOTE: "Such was the work that went on day by day throughout the year.
The sins oflsrael being thus transferred to the sanctuary, the holy places were
defiled, and a special work became necessary for the r.emoval of the sins. God
commanded that an atonement be made for each of the sacred apartments, as
for the altar, to 'cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children
of Israel.' Leviticus 16:19." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
2. What name was given this ceremonial cleansing? Who alone was
divinely authorized to perform it, and what preparation did he have to
make? Leviticus 16:32; Hebrews 9:6, 7; Leviticus 16:2, 6,11-14.
NOTE: " ... But God calls for you to come into closer union with Him, that
He may mold and train you for His work. A solemn statement was made to an-
cient Israel that the man who should remain unclean and refuse to purify
45
himself should be' cut off from among the congregation. This has a special
meaning for us. If it was necessary in ancient t.imes for the unclean to be
purified by the blood of sprinkling, how essential for those living in the perils
of the last days, and exposed to the temptations of Satan, to have the blood of
Christ applied to their hearts daily....
"You should both do much more than you have done toward bearing the
burdens of the work of the Lord. I adjure you to arouse from your lethargy,
leave the vain idolatry of worldly things, and be in earnest to secure a title to
your immortal inheritance. Work while it is day. Do not imperil your souls by
forfeiting present opportunities. Do not make your eternal interests of secon-
dary importance. Do not put the world before religion, and toil day after day
to acquire its riches, while the peril of eternal bankruptcy threatens you.
Every day is bringing you nearer to the final reckoning. Be ready to yield.up
the talents lent you, with the increase gained by their wise use."
-Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 123.
NOTE: "The whole ceremony was designed to impress the Israelites with the
holiness of God and His abhorrence of sin; and, further, to show them that
they could not come in contact with sin without becoming polluted. Every
man was required to afflict his soul while this work of atonement was going
forward. All business was to be laid aside, and the whole congregation ofIsrael
were to spend the day in solemn humiliation before God, with prayer, fasting,
and deep searching of heart." -The Great Controversy, pp. 419, 420.
NOTE: "It was seen, also, that while the sin offering pointed to Christ as a
sacrifice, and the high priest represented Christ as a mediator, the scapegoat
typified Satan, the author of sin, upon whom the sins of the truly penitent will
finally be placed. When the high priest, by virtue of the blood of the sin offer-
ing, removed the sins from the sanctuary, he placed them upon the
scapegoat...." -The Great Controversy, p.422.
6. Enumerate all that was cleansed that day. What was expressly re-
quired at this time? Leviticus 16:11, 17, 30, 33, 34.
46
The Two Goats D Wednesday
June 9
7. What service was performed with the goat symbolizing the Lord?
Leviticus 16:9, 15, 18, 19.
NOTE: " ... The goat upon which the first lot fell was to be slain as a sin
offering for the people. And the priest was to bring his blood within the veil,
and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat. 'And he shall make an atonement for the
holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of
their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the
congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their un-
cleanness.' " -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
8. What had to be done with the scapegoat after the cleansing work
within the sanctuary was completed? What was required of the man
who led the goat into the wilderness before he was allowed back into
the camp? Leviticus 16: 10, 20-22, 26.
NOTE: " ... At the door of the tabernacle he laid his hands upon the head of
the scapegoat and confessed over him 'all the iniquities of the children of
Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head
of the goat.' And as the goat bearing these sins was sent away, they were, with
him, regarded as forever separated from the people. Such was the· service per-
formed 'unto the example and shadow of heavenly things.' Hebrews 8:5."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 356.
NOTE: "Important truths concerning the atonement were taught the people
by this yearly service. In the sin offerings presented during the year, a sub-
stitute had been accepted in the sinner's stead; but the blood of the victim had
not made full atonement for the sin. It had only provided a means by which
the sin was transferred to the sanctuary. By the offering of blood, the sinner
acknowledged the authority of the law, confessed the guilt of his transgression,
and expressed his faith in Him who was to take away the sin of the world; but
he was not entirely released from the condemnation of the law... ."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
"The sins of Israel were thus transferred to the sanctuary, and a special
work became necessary for their removal. God commanded that an atonement
be made for each of the sacred apartments." - The Great Controversy, p. 418.
47
10. Why could not the daily service accomplish complete cleansing and a
remembrance of sins had to be made every year? Ezekiel 18:22,24;
Matthew 18:26, 27, 32-35.
NOTE: "It is true that he may once have received forgiveness; but his unmer-
ciful spirit shows that he now rejects God's pardoning love. He has separated
himself from God, and is in the same condition as before he was forgiven. He
has denied his repentance, and his sins are upon him as if he had not
repented." -Christ.'s Object Lessons, p. 251.
"God will accept only those who are determined to aim high. He places
every human ...agent under obligation to do his best. Moral perfection is re-
quired of alL'Never should we lower the standard of righteousness in order to
accomodatfl inherited or cultivated tendencies to wrongdoing. We need to un-
derstand that imperfection of character is sin...." -Ibid., p. 330.
"Of every Christian the Lord requires growth in efficiency and capability
in every line. Christ has paid us our wages, even His own blood and suffering,
to secure our willing service." -Ibid., pp. 330, 331.
e. What lesson was the day of atonement designed to keep ever before
the people of God?
PERSONAL
What significance should the day of atonement have for us who are living
in the time of the antitypical day of atonement?
48
Lesson 12 Sabbath, June 19,1976
KEY TEXT: "But Christ being come and high priest of good things to come,
by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with
hands, that is to say, not of this building" (Hebrews 9:11).
1. Describe when and where our High Priest's consecration took place
before He officiated in the heavenly sanctuary? Luke 3:21,22;
4:18, 21.
2. What cry from the lips of Christ and supernatural sign indicated that
the earthly sanctuary services were fulfilled? John 19:30; Matthew
27:50,51.
NOTE: "When the loud cry, 'It is finished,' came from the lips of Christ, the
priests were officiating in the temple. It was the hour of the evening sacrifice.
The lamb representirig Christ had been brought to be slain. Clothed in his
significant and beautiful dress, the priest stood with lifted knife, as did
Abraham when he was about to slay his son. With intense interest the people
were looking on. But the earth trembles and quakes; for the Lord Himself
draws near. With a rending noise the inner veil of the temple is torn from top
to bottom by an unseen hand, throwing open to the gaze of the multitude a
place once filled with the presence of God....
"All is terror and confusion. The priest is about to slay the victim; but the
knife drops from his nerveless hand, and the lamb escapes. Type has met an-
titype in the death of God's Son. The great sacrifice has been made.... No
longer need sinful, sorrowing humanity await the coming of the high priest.
Henceforth the Saviour was to officiate as priest and advocate in the heaven of
heavens.... " -The Desire of Ages, pp. 756, 757.
"The sacrificial service that had pointed to Christ passed away; but the
eyes of men were turned to the true sacrifice for the sins of the world. The
earthly priesthood ceased; but we look to Jesus, the minister of the new cove-
nant, and 'to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of
Abel.' ... " -Ibid., p. 166.

The Heavenly Ministry D Monday
June 14
3. After a life of ministry on earth, where was our Redeemer in-
augurated as High Priest? The fulfillment of what promise was a sign
to the church that this was accomplished? Hebrews 8:1-3; 9:24; Acts
2:1, 2, 4; Luke 24:49.
NOTE: "All heaven was waiting to welcome the Saviour to the celestial
courts. As He ascended, He led the way, and the multitude of captives set free
at His resurrection followed. The heavenly host, with shouts and acclamations
of praise and celestial song, attended the joyous train." -The Desire of Ages,
p.833.
"Christ's ascension to heaven was the signal that His followers were to
receive the promised blessing. For this they were to wait before they entered
upon their work. When Christ passed within the heavenly gates, He was
enthroned amidst the adoration of the angels. As soon as this ceremony was
completed, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in rich currents, and
Christ was indeed glorified, even with the glory which He had with the Father
from all eternity. The Pentecostal outpouring was Heaven's communication
that the Redeemer's inauguration was accomplished...." -The Acts of the
Apostles, pp. 38, 39.
4. What work did Christ go to perform and what did He offer on man's
behalf? Hebrews 7:25; 9:12,22,23.
NOTE: "After His ascension our Saviour began His work as our high priest."
-The Great Controversy, p. 420.
"As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placed upon the sin
offering and through its blood transferred, in figure, to the earthly sanctuary,
so in the new covenant the sins of the repentant are by faith placed upon
Christ and transferred, in fact, to the heavenly sanctuary." -Ibid., p.421.
NOTE: "One reminder alone remains: Our Redeemer will ever bear the
marks of His crucifixion. Upon His wounded head, upon His side, His hands
and feet, are the only traces of the cruel work that sin has wrought. Says the
50
prophet, beholding Christ in His glory: 'He had bright beams coming out of
His side: and there was the hiding of His power.' Habakkuk 3:4, margin. That
pierced side whence flowed the crimson stream that reconciled man to
God-there is the Saviour's glory, there 'the hiding of His power.' 'Mighty to
save' ... " -The Great Controversy, p.674.
6. What are we told about Christ as High Priest and what are we ad-
monished to do? Hebrews 7:26-28; 10:21-230; 4:13-16.
NOTE: "The power of Christ, the crucified Saviour, to give eternal life,
should be presented to the people. We should show them that the Old Testa-
ment is as verily the gospel in types and shadows as the New Testament is in
its unfolding power." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 392.
8. What experience did Daniel make when he could not understand this
prophecy? What did he do and what resulted? Daniel 8:26, 27; 9:2, 3,
20-23.
9. Explain the prophecy of seventy weeks, give the dates of the events in
Christ's ministry on earth, and His entry into the most holy in order to
cleanse the sanctuary. Daniel 9:24-27.
10. How does the longest time prophecy teach us that we are now living in
the antitypical day of atonement? Daniel 7:9, 10; Ecclesiastes 12:14.
NOTE: "In the typical service only those who had come before God with con-
fession and repentance, and whose sins, through the blood of the sin offering,
were transferred to the sanctuary, had a part in the service of the Day of
51
Atonement. So in the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment
the only cases considered are those of the professed people of God...." - The
Great Controversy, p. 480.
"The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ's work in behalf of
men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. It opens to view the plan of
redemption, bringing us down to the very close of time, and revealing the
triumphant issue of the contest between righteousness and sin. It is of the ut-
most importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects, and be
able to give to everyone that asketh them a reason for the hope that is in
them." -Review and Herald, November 9, 1905.
"We want to understand the time in which we live. We do not half un-
derstand it. We do not half take it in. My heart trembles in me when I think of
what a foe we have to meet, and how poorly we are prepared to meet him."
-Selected Messages, book I, p. 406.
" ... Therefore what is done to rescue souls from the coming storm of
wrath must be done before Jesus leaves the most holy place of the heavenly
sanctuary." -Early Writings, p. 48.
c. What can the blood of Christ do to keep the believer from remaining
under the power of sin?
e. What in the service of the most holy should concern every believer in
the antitypical day of atonement?
PERSONAL
How do you explain the symbolism of the services ofthe day of atonement
as typifying the investigative judgment going on in our time?

Lesson 13 Sabbath, June 26,1975
THE ANTITYPICAL
DAY OF ATONEMENT
KEY TEXTJ; "But who may abide the day of his coming? [to his temple] and
who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's
fire, and like fullers' soap" (Malachi 3:2). (Emphasis added).
NOTE: "In the type the trumpets were blown throughout Israel, warning all
of the near approach of the solemn day of atonement. In the antitype we
should expect some world-wide message to be given in trumpet tones, announ-
cing the time near when the great antitypical day of atonement, the in-
vestigative judgment, would convene in the heavens. Beginning with the years
1833-34 and extending down to 1844, such a message was given to the world in
trumpet tones, announcing, 'The hour of His judgment is come.' " -The
Cross and Its Shadow, S. N. Haskell, p. 204.
"During the ten years preceding the tenth day of the seventh month
(Jewish time) in 1844, every civilized nation on the earth heard in trumpet
tones the announcement of the message of Revelation 14:6, 7, 'The hour of His
judgment is come.' " -Ibid., p. 205.
NOTE: "The coming of Christ as our high priest to the most holy place, for
the cleansing of the sanctuary, brought to view in Daniel 8:14; the coming of
the Son of man to the Ancient of Days, as presented in Daniel 7:13; and the
coming of the Lord to His temple, foretold by Malachi, are descriptions of the
same event." -The Great Controversy, p. 426.
"God's people are now to have their eyes fixed on the heavenly sanctuary,
where the final ministration of our great High Priest in the work of the judg-
ment is going forward,-where He is interceding for His people." -Review
and Herald, November 27, 1883.

The Nature of this Judgment o Monday
June 21
3. What is this judgment called and whose cases are to be considered?
1 Peter 4:17.
NOTE: "In the typical service only those who had come before God with con-
fession and repentance, and whose sins, through the blood of the sin offering,
were transferred to the sanctuary, had a part in the service of the Day of
Atonement. So in the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment
the only cases considered are those of the professed people of God .... " - The
Great Controversy, p. 480.
"As the books of record are opened in the judgment, the lives of all who
have believed on Jesus come in review before God. Beginning with those who
first lived upon the earth, our Advocate presents the cases of each successive
generation, and closes with the living. Every name is mentioned, every case
closely investigated. Names are accepted, names rejected...." -Ibid.,
p.483.
"Solemn are the scenes connected with the closing work of the atonement.
Momentous are the interests involved therein. The judgment is now passing in
the sanctuary above. For many years this work has been in progress.
Soon-none know how soon-it will pass to the cases of the living." -Ibid.,
p.490.
NOTE: "Every man's work passes in review before God and is registered for
faithfulness or unfaithfulness. Opposite each name in the books of heaven is
entered with terrible exactness every wrong word, every selfish act, every un-
fulfilled duty, and every secret sin, with every artful dissembling. Heaven-sent
warnings or reproofs neglected, wasted moments, unimproved opportunities,
the influence exerted for good or evil, with its far-reaching results, all are
chronicled by the recording angel." -The Great Controversy, p. 482.
"In the book of God's remembrance every deed of righteousness is immor-
talized. There every temptation resisted, every evil overcome, every word of
tender pity expressed, is faithfully chronicled. And every act of sacrifice, every
suffering and sorrow endured for Christ's sake, is recorded." -Ibid., p. 481.
"In the judgment the use made of every talent will be scrutinized. How
have we employed the capital lent us of Heaven? Will the Lord at His coming
receive His own with usury? Have we improved the powers entrusted us, in
hand and heart and brain, to the glory of God and the blessing of the world?
How have we used our time, our pen, our voice, our money, our in-
fluence? ... " -Ibid., p. 487.
"I warn you, Do not place your influence against God's commandments.
That law is just as Jehovah wrote it in the temple of heaven. Man may
54
trample upon its copy here below, but the original is kept in the ark of God in
heaven; and on the cover of this ark, right above that law, is the mercy seat.
Jesus stands right there before that ark to mediate for man." -The SDA
Bible Commentary, E. G. White Comments, vol. 1, p. 1109.
NOTE: "If those who hide and excuse their faults could see how Satan exults
over them, how he taunts Christ and holy angels with their course, they would
make haste to confess their sins and to put them away." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 489.
"When any have sins remaining upon the books of record, unrepented of
and unforgiven, their names will be blotted out of the book of life, and the
record of their good deeds will be erased from the book of God's remem-
brance." -Ibid., p. 483.
"All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of
Christ as their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names
in the books of heaven; as they have become partakers of the righteousness of
Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God,
their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of
eternal life...." -Ibid.
6. What part does Jesus act in this blotting out of sin and how essential
is it in the plan of salvation? Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1.
NOTE: "Those who would share the benefits of the Saviour's mediation
should permit nothing to interfere with their duty to perfect holiness in the
fear of God. The precious hours, instead of being given to pleasure, to display,
55
or to gain seeking, should be devoted to an earnest, prayerful study of the word
of truth." -The Great Controversy, p.488. '
", .. Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ
shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God with-
out a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified
from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own
diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the in-
vestigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins of penitent
believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of
purification, of putting 'awaY of sin, among God's people upon earth...."
-Ibid., p. 425.
8. What messages must be heralded over the whole world before the
close of prbbation? Revelation 14:6-12; Revelation 18:1-4.
NOTE: " ... Thus the sanctuary will be freed, or cleansed, from the record of
sin. In the type, this great work of atonement, or blotting out of sins, was
represented by the services of the Day of Atonement-the cleansing of the
earthly sanctuary, which was accomplished by the removal, by virtue of the
blood of the sin offering, of the sins by which it had been polluted.
"As in the final atonement the sins of the truly penitent are to be blotted
from the records of heaven, no more to be remembered or come into mind, so
in the type they were borne away into the wilderness, forever separated from
the congregation.
"Since Satan is the originator of sin, the direct instigator of all the sins
that caused the death of the Son of God, justice demands that Satan shall suf-
fer the final punishment. Christ's work for the redemption of men and the
purification of the universe from sin will be closed by the removal of sin from
the heavenly sanctuary and the placing of these sins upon Satan, who will
bear the final penalty. So in the typical service, the yearly round of ministra-
tion closed with the purification of the sanctuary, and the confessing of the
sins on the head of the scapegoat." -Patriarchs'and Prophets, pp. 357, 358.
10. What divine appeal is still being made for God's people? What else is
our advocate requesting besides full pardon from sin? Matthew 5:48;
John 17:15-17,24.
NOTE: "Oh, let us live wholly for the Lord and show by a well-ordered life
and godly conversation that we have been with Jesus and are His meek and
lowly followers. We must work while the day lasts, for when the dark night of
trouble and anguish comes, it will be too late to work for God. Jesus is in His
56
holy temple and will now accept our sacrifices, our prayers, and our con-
fessions of faults and sins and will pardon all the transgressions of Israel, that
they may be blotted out before He leaves the sanctuary...." -Early
Writings, p. 48.
" ... The divine Intercessor presents the plea that all who have overcome
through faith in His blood be forgiven their transgressions, that they be
restored to their Eden home, and crowned as joint heirs with Himself to 'the
first dominion' .... He asks for His people not only pardon and justification,
full and complete, but a share in His glory and a seat upon His throne." -The
Great Controversy, p. 484.
c. What is our only hope to have a successful outcome for our case?
PERSONAL
Are there changes that I should make in my life style as I realize the
momentous significance of the serious events going forward in heaven?
