Lesson plan in Mathematics Grade 2

I- Objectives:
After the 45 minutes discussion the 90% of the students are able to;

a. Define minuend, subtrahend and difference

b. Perform subtraction sentence
c. Recognize the plus (+) and minus (-) sign.

III- Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Students Activity

A. Introduction/preparation We are fine thanked you, how about you?
Good morning children, how are you
today?
I’m Fine to thank you.

Are you ready for today’s lesson?

Okay, clap once if you’re ready. yes Ma’am
Clap twice if you’re ready. (Clap!)
(Clap, Clap!)
Very Good!

Motivation
Before we will start who, can tell me (Student’s raising their hands)
what was our lesson last meeting?
Our lesson yesterday is about Addition
ma’am
Okay very good, adding something to
something else that’s the addition.

May I ask Who among you here has a fish (some raising their hands)
as a pet?

Do you take good care of your pets? Yes ma’am

Yes, that right, we need to handle them
with care and love too. But why? (students’ response)
Any idea why pets are need to be cared Because they have feelings and life too.
also?

Yes, that right they have feelings like us.

Okay now I have a trivia for you class, did

you know that if you keep a gold fish in a
small container it will be kept small and
short- lived. A gold fish should live about
7 to 10 years but fish in a small container
rarely live more than 2 to 3 years. So, if
you put the fish in a small container
instead of 7 years it will live for 2 to 3
years only.

B. Activity
I have a 6 gold fish here
(posting pictures)

As you can see there are 6 gold fish inside

the aquarium but the four died so I
2 ma’am.
removed it from the aquarium how many
were left?

Yes, Very good

Only 2 gold fish left inside.
Alright very good!
C. Analysis

Okay now, I have two boxes here then

let’s compare which box has more object
or item.
(Showing the Boxes to the class)

Box 1 has 8 items

Box 2 has 6 items
Now which box has more object?
(students’ response)
The box 1 teacher.
Very good, how many items has the Box
2? six
How about the box 1?
eight
We can use subtraction in comparing two
groups of objects.

Now 8 – 6 = 2 or 8
-6___
2
This how you construct
subtraction, we used the minus sign (-) to
this operation.

D. Abstraction
What operation we use in taking away
from the group or comparing which has
more?
(students’ response)
Anyone from the class? Subtraction teacher.
Yes, Jenny?

Very good! We use subtraction to deduct

a number or to compare which has more.
Now what are the 3 parts of subtraction
problem? (students’ response)
Yes, Erika please stand. The three parts of subtraction problem are
minuend, subtrahend and difference.
Okay now, from the number of items (students’ response)
inside in our boxes lets determine the
parts of subtraction
minuend
subtrahend
8 is?
6 is? difference
2 is?

8   minuends
- _6__ subtrahend
2 difference
Very good!
8 is called the minuend. It is the number from
which we subtract.
6 is called subtrahend. It is the number that we
subtract.
2 is called difference. It is the answer in
subtraction.
We may read the subtraction sentence in any of
the following ways.

a. 8 minus 6 is equal to 2.
b. 6 subtracted from 8 is 2.
c. 8 take away 6 is 2.
d. 8 remove 6 is equal to 2.
e. The difference of 8 and 6 is 2. (students’ response)
Yes teacher
Did you get it class?

To determine that you really understand

the lesson. I will give you an exercise to
answer.

On your notebook answer the following

posted on the board.
Questions:
Encircle the best answer.
subtraction sentence based on the picture
shown.
1.

________________________________
(Answer)
a. 7 minus 3 is equal to 4 Letter a.
b. 7 minus 3 is equal to 3
c. 4 subtracted to 3 is 7

2.
(Answer)
Letter b.

________________________________
a. 5 minus 9 is equal to 4
b. 9 removed 5 is equal to 4
c. 4 take away 9 is equal to 5

3. What is the difference of 8 - 3 =?

a. 8 (Answer)
b. 3 Letter c.
c. 5

4. What operator sign we use for subtraction? (Answer)

a. ( + ) Letter b.
b. ( - )
c. ( = )

are you done class?

Okay let’s check your work.

E. Application
Addition and subtraction facts that use
the same numbers form a fact family.
Facts of the same family are related. For Yes teacher.
example, the digits 3, 4 and 7 form a fact
family because of the following:
4+3=7 7-3 = 4 7–4=3

Okay! anyone can give me another

example?
(students’ response)

6 + 12 = 18 18 – 12 = 6 18 – 6 = 12
Very good!
IV EVALUATION
For each additional sentence, write the subtraction sentences.

Ex.

6 + 4 = 10 10- 4 = 6 10 – 6 = 4

1. 8 + 5 = 13
2. 9 + 6 = 15
3. 7 + 8 = 15

IV- Assignment

for your assignment solve the following.
